‘Real Beauty Sketches’ Ad Campaign by Dove Enlightens Women

1

Recently, I saw the new Dove Ad Campaign on reddit. Despite the controversy around Unilever (who own many companies including Dove and Axe), the ad campaigns by Dove have been very heartwarming on the idea of beauty.

In this campaign, Dove found seven women of different ages and backgrounds as well as a FBI-trained forensic artist Gil Zamora to create sketches of them based on descriptions of their own facial features. The artist and women never saw each other, but earlier in the day the strangers had an opportunity to spend time with one another.

Zamora created two sketches per woman: one described by the woman, and the other described by the stranger they met that day. It is a very lovely video, showing that women are their own worst critics.

If you have a few minutes, I highly suggest watching it (even if you don’t agree with the ad campaign) to see the reactions of the women.

Bringing the legality of Child Soldiers to YOUR attention during Youth Week through Paxium

0
(redcross.ca)

As a young generation of Canadians, we are entrenched with a sense of security as we mature when it comes to emerging world issues. From the day we enter this world with astonishment and curiosity, we are protected on a global basis with the United Nation’s Declaration of the Rights of the Child.

Even with these types of international agreements in place, however, there are still far too many violations. We still hear stories of Child Soldiers despite the presence of Section 8 in that declaration, where it is clearly stated that “the child shall be protected against all forms of neglect, cruelty, and exploitation”.  Take the youngster who lacks a foot in the banner above for example – it’s intriguing yet leaves us in awe to see that many children have suffered through these types of injuries.

This is where Paxium begins to serve it’s purpose. A role-playing workshop held by the Canadian Red Cross, this simulation is a cooperative effort – throughout the activity, Youth are given various different leadership roles in Paxium, a fictional country and the namesake of this event. An aspect of globalization that this activity will specifically focus on is the exploitation of children in battle.

While successful teamwork creates prosperity, students will also have to deal in times of hardships of this simulated country with the opportunity to learn about the International Humanitarian Law. How can a country maintain it’s peace and unity?

(blog.intelex.com)

If you are one of those interested Youth aged 14 to 18, join the Red Cross at the Village Square Library this Sunday, April 21st, from 2PM to 4PM, for an experience that initiates critical discussions about this emerging world issue today. Engage in this relevant social issue and learn about the Red Cross’s role in protecting Child Soldiers during Youth Week!

New ‘Calgary Compliments’ Facebook Page Takes the “Strange Out of Stranger”

0

CalgaryCompliments

Since its inception in January 2013, Facebook page Calgary Compliments has taken our city by storm. So what exactly is the purpose to a page like this?  Unlike similar “confessions” pages which have been popping all over the interwebs, this compliments page is a civic outreach initiative to help Calgarians bond.

Inspired by the University of Calgary Compliments page of a similar nature, citizens are able to post kind thoughts about fellow Calgarians whom they may not know.  The page will post each compliment and those who submit a message, remain anonymous, just like the page’s creator.

“To the old white male on Calgary transit who told me he respected me for wearing a hijab, Thank you!” reads one compliment.

“To the Route 98 bus driver who was kind enough to wait for me at the stop when I was running late today, thank you for being able to spot my look of despair from 4 blocks away. You’re awesome.” Reads another.

Yet one more declares “To the Asian girl drinking a pink bubble tea coming from downtown on the Somerset/Bridlewood train, You’re cute.” The compliments are numerous and varied.  They aim to dissolve both cultural, gender and age barriers, all of which makes this page, like its counterparts, that much more unique.

I had a special opportunity to speak with Calgary Compliments’ founder.  Upon being asked about his initial vision for the page, he admits that it’s level of popularity, although key to public outreach, was not as important to him as the intent of simply spreading the message that something as little as a compliment can really make a difference.  With a little help from the page, he hopes that soon, compliments to fellow Calgarians will become naturally ingrained within people, who will no longer need Facebook to directly express their gratitude to those they may not know personally.  He went on to acknowledge how Calgary Compliments helps people build connections with and acknowledge relationships between people who normally would not interact.  The page itself even received a compliment, which read:CalgaryCompliments2

This is one of just the many indications that Calgary Compliments is indeed becoming part of Calgary culture.  The brains behind the page stated, “I want to take the strange out of stranger and know that I am directly creating positive change in Calgary”.  With over a 1,000 hits and 370 likes and counting, the amazing initiative needs all the support it can get to climb the social media ladder so don’t forget to give it a thumbs up!

Celebrate Spring with Carrot Cake!

Nothing says spring like a recipe made with freshly grown ingredients! Crunchy carrots make their debut in Martha Stewart’s sweet yet spicy carrot cake (for the recipe see hyperlink). I found this recipe to be quite good; the blend of spices and cream cheese icing made an excellent combination, creating the perfect dessert when paired with a nice cup of tea.

Karlee, enjoying a delicious piece of carrot cake
Karlee, enjoying a delicious piece of carrot cake

The cake was baked in the exact time the recipe said it would be, coming out moist, flavourful and carroty. The cake was not super sweet, but had a more spice filled flavour, due to the cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. The lack of sweetness in the cake was good, as the cream cheese icing was very rich and sweet. The icing was also a little

runny; when the cake was assembled the second layer started sliding sideways due to the icing’s lack of hold; good thing the batter produced two layers of cake rather than three! Add more icing sugar to thicken icing, or if the icing would become too sweet, refrigerating runny icing before use for ten minutes or so should firm it up a bit.

All in all the cake turned out to be a magnificent, sweet, yet somewhat healthy, treat. Pecans can be applied to the outside of the cake for decoration, and for those who want more of a challenge icing carrots can be piped on (for a tutorial click here).

This recipe is great for those who are just starting out in baking, the recipe is straightforward and easy to follow. The only challenge during the preparation of this cake is stacking the cake together during assembly. If you’ve never made a layer cake before I’d recommend having someone else “spot” you while you put one layer on top of the other. Overall this is one of the better cakes I have made, and was surprisingly moist for a carrot cake, this combined with how simple it is to make, makes this recipe a keeper.

8 Things to be learned from Candy Crush

1

CandyCrushLevels

Recently, the game Candy Crush Saga has became extremely popular that, unfortunately, both me and my mom got super addicted to everything Candy Crush (we even bought Fuzzy Peach lol). Therefore, when I came through this article while scrolling through my facebook news feed one day, immediately I thought of sharing it with you guys.

1. Difficulties are common. As long as you keep trying, you will conquer them eventually.

2. When you feel like giving up, look at your friends ahead of you. If they can pass those obstacles, why can’t you?

3. You always see some people moving forward faster than you are, but have you thought of how much more time and effort they put in?

4. Some people are able to go through difficulties more easily because they are lucky, but don’t be upset about it. Luck always comes.

5. Not everyone will give you his/her heart, but if you give out your heart (help others), you will always get some replies.

6. At certain points in life, help from friends is necessary. True friends will help you by giving you the tickets to move forward.

7. Don’t try to change your situation by resetting your time. You will need to return what you owed.

8. When you are failing, there are always some seemingly easier paths. Don’t give in. Hang on and keep going. You will eventually get over the failure.

It’s amazing how a short three minute video can alter your way of thinking. I love this video not only for it’s simplicity, but also for the lasting effects it can take upon the viewer, challenging different perspectives. The fact that this is a Carl Sagan clip doesn’t hurt either.

Ghosts Of Violence

20130405 Atlantic Ballet image (S0309600)

Last Friday, Calgary’s very own Jubilee Auditorium held Alberta’s first ever Atlantic Ballet Show called Ghosts Of Violence. This magnificent ballet show was the first I have ever attended and may I say, WOW! I was amazed by the dancers ability to portray a story just through the movement of their bodies, through dance with no words just music. The production was about Domestic Violence and it was a way to bring awareness and hopefully begin to put an end to it.

There were four males and four female dancers dancing to tell a story. All four girls were abused by the men, chairs were thrown, doors were squeezing in on the fragile beauties, tables were flipped, and hands were raised all with great grace and poise. But they did have a huge and ever-lasting impact on the audience. I know I was impacted. All four girls came out on stage falling in love but in a detrimental turn of events they were being tortured by the domineering males. The choreographer was truly a genius in his ways of conducting the on stage movements to reach out to every member of the audience and touch their souls.

As the production continued I began to notice that they males were insecure and hurting in there own ways as well. The finale performance was the icing on the cake and was definitely standing-ovation worthy which it did receive! All of the dancers came on staged stripped naked (body suits) and were dancing in harmony, it showed the unity and pain they all shared. The final movement was when they all gathered together and water poured over them, it was to purify them and give them a fresh start perhaps?

I know my eyes were watering by the end of that performance and I am truly honored Youth Are Awesome and Kids Up Front gave me and my best friend this marvelous opportunity to attend such a life changing ballet show. I would like to commend all the dancers, all the praise in the world isn’t enough to tell them how magnificent they were. I wish them luck on their upcoming shows and hope they continue to spread the message. I rate this performance 5/5 stars!

Lots of Love,

Malika (:

A fro-yo like no other… Qoola!

2

LogoGuess how I spent my Saturday morning? At a time when I would normally be sleeping, I was at Market Mall. Why? I was having chocolate frozen yogurt, a smoothie, and a waffle for breakfast. This wasn’t just any frozen yogurt, smoothie, or waffle. I was at the grand opening of Qoola Frozen Yogurt Bar! In fact, the Market Mall location is the first to be opened in Alberta!

If you like frozen yogurt, this is THE place to go. If you like food, this is THE place to go. If you are ANYONE, this is THE place to go. Any other place serving frozen treats, I would have been disgusted with myself for consuming that quantity of food and sugar so early. Luckily, Qoola isn’t like those other  places.

I’ll start with their three values, which are actually represented by those three colourful, fruity looking, Q-ish shapes that make the logo:

  1. Health -> Have no guilt. For health freaks, dieters, and anyone who cares about their body and health, you don’t need to have a single regret after indulging at Qoola. There treats are made with fresh yogurt, rather than gross powder stuff that other places use. This makes Qoola’s fro-yo contain hundreds of millions of probiotic cultures more per gram!!! Insane! If that hasn’t convinced you, what about this: Qoola is kosher, gluten-free, ultra high in probiotics, and has no-sugar-added and sorbet options!!! And yet, Qoola is still working. They are building an organic line to further promote a healthy living style!
  2. Environment -> Again, no guilt, no regret, just yummy food. (REALLY yummy food). All those utensils and cups and napkinsSplash-Main-Health-Environment-Community that normally become friends with the garbage can, are instead biodegradable! Furthermore, no need to use a new cup each time. Qoola’s cups are dishwasher safe, so wash ’em up and use it again! (and get 25 cents off!).
  3. Community -> Qoola doesn’t just forget about that 25 cents! No, when you save that 25 cents, they donate that amount to the childrens’ hospital. Now THAT is AMAZING! Of course, that’s already more than enough, but they also donate a substantial amount to Big Brothers Big Sisters! When you pay the fair price for the most amazing fro-yo you’ve ever had, some of that goes towards charity. So you should be proud! Qoola should be super proud!

Along with those three central themes, Qoola has 6 statements that they follow. I won’t go in depth, as most are essentially outlined in the three categories I mentioned above.

  1. Pure heart & Pure body Pure intent, no shortcuts. This is a way of living, not just a brand.
  2. Qoola loves to serve! Us, you, and the community as a whole! Charity is a big part of their business.
  3. No powder, always fresh! Forget about gross powder alternatives. Qoola is REAL and FRESH
  4. We go au natural Nutritional facts and ingredients are open, plus they’re kosher and gluten-free!
  5. Qoola cares! They don’t take shortcuts when it comes to our environment.
  6. Oh Canada! Qoola is proudly Canadian, as it all started in Vancouver, and is now spreading across our home and native land!

SO WHY SHOULD YOU GO TO QOOLA?!?!?!

The reasons are infinite! As a youth, this is the place for something YUMMYHEALTHYPURE, and AWESOME! What more could you ask? Qoola has 10 locations at the moment, and they hope to have 15 by the end of the year! Now that there’s one right in Calgary at Market Mall, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t go. Now!!! Self-serve fro-yo (tons of original flavours, plus the option to swirl them!), endless toppings (cheesecake bites anyone? how ’bout brownie? kiwi?), and Ghiradelli syrups, plus warm belgian waffles, and the option to blend your fro-yo and fruit into a smoothie by adding juice! GO THERE! NOW! NOW! For the Grand Opening, there was a looooong line, a CFL football player, and everyone from toddlers to grandmas. Add to that audience. Qoola refuses to take shortcuts or comprise with the integrity of their company, and the only shortcut you should be taking is the one that gets you to Market Mall the quickest.

Extremely short stories

2

It’s the time of year when everyone in my grade is starting to get stressed out about provincial exams. We’re writing short stories, and I was looking at techniques when I accidentally stumbled upon the art of flash fiction. It’s an interesting art.

Legend has it that Ernest Hemingway once wrote a story in only six words as part of a bet:

For sale: Baby shoes, never worn.

Hemingway won the bet. They say he also considered it his best work.

I find it interesting how sometimes it takes hundreds of pages for an author to make you think, and sometimes only six words can show plot and character development.

More six word stories can be found at:

http://www.sixwordstories.net/

And here is another flash fiction, courtesy of Patrick Johanneson – slightly longer, but I think it shows a lot of character development.

Dancing

On a hilltop at sunset, they danced one last time. High clouds burned crimson and chromium, and she sang to him:

o this is the guillotine, and this is the knife
this is for murder, this is for life

He whirled her like a dervish, spinning her about and about, watching her dark hair mask her face like a funeral veil.

so come, hangman, tie up your noose
my lover is here, waiting for you

He dipped her low, kissed her carmine lips, then lifted her into the sky. She laughed with delight, and he couldn’t remember the last time she’d sounded so happy.

we dance on the hill, we prance through the heath
we eat, drink and are merry, till we’re all out of breath

And the music ended, and the first stars appeared in the eastern firmament. He bowed to her, both of them dripping sweat from their hair. Her smile was inscrutable.

“It’s time, isn’t it,” he said.

“It is,” she said. “Time to wake up.”

He woke, and the bed was empty, and once more he was a widower.

He put on his ring and faced the day.

Try your hand at writing flash fiction! I think it is a valuable art – both reading and writing. Reading others’ flash fiction helps you to read between the lines (or between the line…) and really inspires you to think and be creative. Instead of hitting you over the head with what they want to say, they only say the essential bits – the creme de la creme, so to speak.

Writing flash fiction should help with summarizing and the ability to choose the essential parts you want your reader to know, which is a valuable skill.

So here’s something fun you can try as a writing exercise,  and technically you’re studying for your PATs as well! It’s a win-win.

Acca Awkward

1

Awkward moments. Aren’t they splendid.

1. That awkward moment when you don’t get the title of this post because you haven’t seen pitch perfect.

2. That awkward moment when you make a derp face to your friend to see how long it takes for them to notice, and they never do, but everyone else in the room does.

3. That awkward moment when you have to explain the joke, then re-explain the explanation because they still don’t get it.

4. That awkward moment when you are singing your heart out to the radio, and you sing the lyrics at the wrong time.

5.  That awkward moment when everyone else stops laughing but you still think it’s funny.

6. That awkward moment when you send a text to the wrong person

7.  That awkward moment when you run out of things to say so you just stand there.

8. That awkward moment when you are asked a question but you weren’t paying attention.

9. That awkward moment when you are forgotten about while playing hide and seek.

10. That awkward moment when you have to give out that email address you made when you were eleven.

‘The Adventures of Rubberkid’, an Anti-bullying game

0

logo

A Flash game called The Adventures of Rubberkid has finally been created after Developer Charlie Jackson’s Kickstarter campaign in December.

The game is geared for children, where the main character protects students from insults. It’s a very cute game with a nice message, where each level shows potential consequences of bullying and the potential future accomplishments of the victims who you helped protect.

3 Steps to Prepare You for that Interview

From Worcester polytechnic Insititute
From Worcester polytechnic Insititute

You’ve dressed up, are a little sweaty under the neck and have pumped your interviewer’s hand a little too vigorously before sitting down in the hot seat… it’s the dreaded job interview.  Remember what the most important principle in real estate is? Location, location, location.

A very important principle to remember for that job interview is this: PREPARE, PREPARE, PREPARE. If you fail to prepare, prepare to fail. So HOW to PREPARE? I was lucky enough to attend an appointment recently with career specialist at the University of Calgary that illustrated these sensible points. These pointers may be handy for any interview, not just career, but also volunteer related positions you will have in the future!

Follow these three steps to help prepare for interviews better.

1. Prepare answers to the most common questions:

Tell me about yourself? Where do you see yourself in 5 years? What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? These are very likely to come up. Know yourself and be honest. Your weakness isn’t cupcakes either. When talking about your weakness, state it truthfully, but definitely tell your employers what you are doing to improve upon it, so it doesn’t raise any red flags about your work ethic. Be career related in your answers.

2. Create at least 10 SPARCS.

A sparc is the formula for any examples they want you to provide to demonstrate a skill/ attitude/ attribute they are looking for. Situation or Problem, Action taken, Result, Close or what you have learned. Talk about the examples positively and with confidence.

ex. Question: Tell me a time where you inspired someone? SPARC. At this one instance at the …..I did this…..it caused this to happen…and I’ve learned this.

3. Ask the company questions back.

You also want to know if the company is a good fit for you.

What is the team environment like? What are the skills and attributes your top performers possess? How do I succeed in this job? Ask questions, things you couldn’t already find on the company’s page.
