Being Unique Is Beautiful

“Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.” ~Marilyn Monroe <3

To all the ladies out there, this blog is dedicated to you! Do you agree with this quote? Do you connect with it? Haha I know I definitely do!  This quote by Marilyn Monroe inspires me to be who I am and to remain unique. For my blog this Friday, I am focusing on being unique and truly who you are. We have all been born with talents and gifts, we have all been created differently, we all have different personalities, and we must learn to love them. We must learn to love ourselves for who we truly are.

Although society and the media has created a certain identity for us youth, we can’t cave in and become what the world wants us to be. We shouldn’t have to be a size zero and have a typical teenage girl personality reflected on screens throughout the world. It isn’t fair, it isn’t us. With all due respect, I too fan girl over all of these picture perfect movies and dream of becoming like the main actress but in reality her character is not even real. We are individuals with spectacular qualities we shouldn’t try to be someone we are not. We shouldn’t have to always go along with status quo. We are all beautiful, no matter what anyone else tells us.

So let’s stop acting so superficial to fit in and look normal, because in reality none of us a normal. Take me for an example, I’m probably one of the weirdest people you will ever meet. Surprising? Aha, I doubt it! 😛 But let me tell you, I ain’t perfect yet I am a perfectionist. I am the farthest thing away from any kind of perfection whether it may be like the ideal “American/Canadian” teenager or in my daily life. It is packed with flaws, and when I look into the mirror I die a little because I am my own enemy. I stand in front of the mirror every morning and think about how ugly, or fat I may be compared to a model on the cover of a magazine. What can I do, I’m a fourteen year old girl? But then I try to focus on the positives, on how beautiful I truly am, on the inside and out. I urge you all to do this. One of my biggest inspiration, Alison Springer, taught me how to be confident. The biggest part of it all is shutting off the criticism you throw at yourself. Don’t leave the mirror until you only hear positive remarks, you shouldn’t live your life in fear.

BE UNIQUE, BE YOU. blogger

If I were to get a tattoo I swear it would say that! Whether you are a girly girl, hippy, punk rock-chick, preppy gal or tomboy you are original, so stay original. Your uniqueness it was makes you stand out. Don’t change, stay classy, live happy because all in all being unique is beautiful! <3

Photo(s) of the day: Grizzlies and a Crocus

DSCF7520

Surrounded by the sound of rain and even hail, I’m not so sure I want to go outside for long right now. Luckily, I can just look back at my memories from last week. From Tuesday through to Friday, my class went on a camping trip to Jasper. We had amazing weather, a wonderful time, and rare experiences. One of such experiences was seeing a total of 6 bears! Three out of six were seen from the safety of our Traxx bus, one of those being a Grizzly. The other three, however, we saw fifty meters or so off the trail where we were hiking! Even more exciting, these three were grizzlies! After being warned by some hikers that had passed the section before our group, we got to see a mother and her two cubs. The group of 12 or so that I was with snapped tons of photos, making the 37 other kids super jealous :). Since we were hiking with a guide, after the picture-taking, we made noise so that the Grizzlies wouldn’t approach us. Although the experience was fairly brief, it’s one I will never forget!

Along with rare experiences like seeing the Grizzlies so intimately, we also got to experience the underestimated beauty of nature. One of my favourite examples is the wide array of flowers that were blooming along the trails. Of these, the ones that I have always loved most are crocuses. They are early bloomers, and such a precious, awe-inspiring creation of nature.

DSCF7487Although the recent weather isn’t really on our side here in Calgary, take whatever chances you have and get outside. Explore nature and the world that is already here and has been here long before you and me and us existed. Explore Spring and all it has to offer. Frequently, these treasures are hidden. I challenge you to find them 🙂

For That Reason, I’m out

Upon hearing that, many of you, will have recognized that cringe-worthy phrase from one of Canada’s most famed TV shows: Dragon’s Den. A reality television show, revolving around business ventures, Dragon’s Den is a entrepreneurial gateway for the next big thing. People across the country, pitch to some of Canada’s most successful entrepreneurs for investments to grow their companies.

Dragon’s Den originated in Japan as “Tiger of Money” and since then has spread to many places across the world. Being a big success in Japan, as its first business reality TV show in 2001, it starred more than 16 entrepreneurs for its three year run-period. Soon, Sony Pictures bought the format and international interest was prodded. Today, the show has spread to over 20 different countries, and they sport some of the most successful entrepreneurs from around the world. In Canada, Dragon’s Den ended the 2009 – 2010 series with over 2.1 million viewers.

In Canada, budding businessmen propose ventures with 5 of Canada’s own:

  1. Kevin O’Leary – The blunt venture capitalist who made his millions from selling his educational firm.
  2. Arlene Dickinson – The only female entrepreneur on the show who made money from her company, Venture Communications.
  3. Jim Treliving – The most experienced (well, the oldest) on the show, the icon of Boston Pizza and sports teams.
  4. David Chilton – Author of the Wealthy Barber
  5. Bruce Croxon – Software Mogul who led Lavalife to success.

The Dragons’ all use their own money to fund the start – ups hoping for good returns. The entrepreneurs come for money in return for royalties, perpetuities and equity. The entrepreneurs range from start – ups making no sales, to multimillion dollar companies with hundreds of thousands in sales. The Dragons look for the businesses with the highest potential and decide to invest in the companies. With a wide range of representative’s, anything can happen.

The investments don’t all depend on one thing. They depend on the representative’s likability, sales, profit margins, debt, and product’s likability. Dragon’s Den, an icon of businesses connection to society, and philanthropy, should be pursued by everyone, and maybe one of you might decide to try it to.

DIY: Men’s Shirt Halter Dress

With summer just around the corner, dresses are starting to come back. This tutorial teaches you how to make a super cute summer dress from an XXL men’s shirt. If you have a sewing machine at home, it would help make this project very easy.

Teppanyaki on the fly from the roving “Shogun”

Okay, it’s not quite what you’re thinking.

ShogunFoodTruck

Yet it fits perfectly with the Japanese theme of Otafest (officially my favorite convention now, hehe).

Shogun Teppanyaki Grill was my lunch choice on the Sunday of that long weekend, partly because I didn’t have a volunteer shift that day (no free food), but mostly because four food trucks participating this year sounded exciting!

OtafestFoodTrucks
I also went to the Family Fry Guy which I will be doing a post on. Sorry Avatara :I

Shogun Teppanyaki Grill on Urbanspoon

The blue food truck’s exterior design was dominated by its own logo with a few touches of Japanese culture here and there.

ShogunJapanese

Similar to other food trucks, the menu selection is relatively small, although it is decked out with some specialties that reflect the Japanese roots, including Gyoza (a Japanese derivative of potstickers if you will), Tohoyaki (octopus!), and Edamame.  Of course, Teppanyaki items including Sukiyaki, Teriyaki, and Yakisoba make their appearances as well.

ShogunMenu
Oh, and their Twitter account is @Shogungrill  (I told you I have a Twitter bias!)

See where all these “yaki”s come from? If you look at the etymology of all these terms, yaki (焼き) means grilled in Japanese. 🙂

And so that’s where we’re heading! It’s foooooood time.

ShogunTeriyaki
Shogun Teriyaki Chicken! ($8)
And of course, my friend's lovely MELON BUN
And of course, my friend’s lovely MELON BUN 😀 ($2)

The Teriyaki chicken was quite good, but I feel that the portion is a bit small for the price. There isn’t much to really say about it since it didn’t leave surprises; at least it lived up to what it was. Perhaps a bigger portion or perhaps going at a different time would have helped?

Yet there was the melon bun that my friend had. I only had a little bite out of it, but I felt it was a much better buy. The bun was fluffy enough and the chocolate flavor….. 😀

ShogunRice

I will venture out and check their menus more; I think this food truck has a lot of potential (like the melon bun) with its neat menu, but maybe the day I went was not the best day. The price for the rice I had didn’t exactly match the portions I received. This isn’t a disappointment though, however; maybe I will order more of their small items and not their entrees.

Ratings

I’m going to a 5-point system since a 10-point is too broad for me.

Service – 4/5 – It was great and adequate.

Food – 4/5 – This is a balance between the Teriyaki and the Melon Bun.

Value – 3.5/5 – Mainly s bit lower due to their entree items.

Location  (what, location?)   Food truck character and design – 3.5/5 – I like the crashing waves if you ask me. (There is a lot of that in Japanese culture, right?)

Until the next time I come across Shogun again…

Awesome Cosplayers from Otafest!

Here’s yet another post about Otafest. I guess we’re just trying to encourage you to go to more conventions in Calgary! 🙂

I was able to take pictures of really nice costumes throughout the convention. Unfortunately I was volunteering when the Cosplay photoshoots were happening, but I hope you enjoy these awesome costumes!

Book Review: Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

0

What would you do if you had a second chance? Would you try to make up for what you’ve done wrong or try to live while you can, or maybe even both?

Samantha Kingston was having the time of her life, her boyfriend was perfect, she was perfect, popular, had an adorable math teacher and great friends. She could walk all over everyone else because she was the most popular, she could make fun of Juliet, the school freak and get away with it. She was having the best time at a party, but when her friend Lindsay insists  on driving home drunk, they crash and Sam is the only one who dies. When she is closing her eyes for what she thinks is the last time, leads to a repeat of that day, to make up for everything that went wrong.

beforeifall

You can’t help but hate the group of best friends, Sam, Lindsay, Elody and Ally. Especially Lindsay. They are just cruel and rude, and will do anything to get on top of the food chain. Yet, you still feel sympathy for what each of the girls is going through, they all have problems, anywhere from as small as being bullied until 6th grade to big as being bulimic, whatever the problem, they always stick together and never speak of past problems. I feel that, that can really show how well they get along and how deep down they are sensitive.

The plot is gripping yet familiar (hence Groundhog Day) however, Lauren made it feel brand new and not at all cheesy. It had a gripping ending and great supporting characters. You could also see the transition of Sam’s emotions about having to repeat the day, at first skeptical, then mad and finally the realization strikes. I’m also obsessed with the ending, however I have read many reviews about how people hated the ending, so I would love to converse with you about your opinions of the ending!

The only flaws were that I thought that a lot of the events were unrealistic, such as when seniors and sophomore don’t talk because they hate each other. I felt like most of the events and character were stereotypical. However, it was still addicting.

Keep Calm and Marvel On – The Brilliance of London, England; Part 1

2

Over this spring break, I’ve had the most wonderful – most awe-inspiring, phenomenal, stupendous, extraordinary, and breath-taking (for “wonderful” simply isn’t enough to describe the awesomeness that had befallen upon me, so I take to abuse the thesaurus) – experience: school trip to LONDON and PARIS!

I’ve always loved to travel and sight-see, but the trip was beyond anything I have ever imagined. First time in Europe, the two cities have absolutely captivated my heart with all their beauty and charisma. The architecture and respect for arts and culture have stayed with me and will stay with me for ever; at every turn, there seemed to be an anecdote behind every little detail carved into the intricacies of the buildings and the ground that one dances upon. “Keep[ing] Calm” certainly wasn’t optional. Though the spring Calgary weather of snow and wind and cold practically followed everywhere we went, it was still an amazing experience. Hopefully I will be able to capture the great highlights of London and do her at least some justice.

After coming back to Calgary, life seemed a little too normal. School. Homework. Exams. All the torture endured and accepted for the past few years became a little too meaningless. I often found myself thinking about London, about Europe, about traveling; with the approaching IB exams, I became even more restless. What was so frightening about coming back to reality is that one may forget what it was like to enjoy oneself in the midst of our worries, so I wallowed in the waters of the River Thames. I sat in the London Tube as life flashed by. Not to be melodramatic, but who knows when the opportunity will come again? How can we focus on our present demands with insight into what we want to become? A quote that resonated with me from the play Six Degrees of Separation really had me thinking about the essence of traveling and extraordinary events that we experience.

“How do we fit what happened to us into life without turning it into an anecdote with no teeth and a punch line you’ll mouth over and over for years to come… And we become these human juke boxes spilling out these anecdotes. But it was an experience. How do we keep the experience?”

Whether it is through writing or photography; art or remembrance – alas! we must allow these amazing experiences to change us and shape us for who we are and who we are going to become. I genuinely hope that, through my posts, I can capture what it was like to be eighteen and in a city of thousands of years of history behind every gravel. I hope that I can inspire others like yourself to open your eyes to the world beyond your own. Photographs are framed, but the experience is border-less.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” (Mark Twain)

Now, with that in mind, please welcome Her Majesty…

ENGLAND.

First impressions of London as we drove from London Heathrow Airport (west end of London) to our hotel (east end of London): humidity (fog and thick, low clouds), driving on the “wrong” side of the road (just because North Americans drive on the right side), and beautiful, surreal buildings.

Fact: During the industrial revolution, factories were built in the middle of London. As the wind currents from the Atlantic Ocean blow east, the west side had better air quality. Hence, the most of the oligarchy settled down in the west side. The London 2012 Olympics were held in east London in incite economic growth.

Random Fact: Q: Why was Mad Hatter mad? A: The hat-makers used to use mercury as one of the materials for making hats.

Who are Canada’s mayors?

0

Each of Canada’s cities has a very different system for their mayor – some have parties, some don’t, some have a lot of visible corruption, and others seem clean. In the last year, in Canada’s biggest city, there have been scandals that revealed information previously unknown to anyone about Canada’s mayors. With all these changes occurring, what is really happening in each of these cities executive positions?

Mayor Nenshi
Mayor Nenshi of Calgary

Calgary: There are no major changes occurring in Calgary’s mayoral position, but with the election coming up, there has been a surprising lack of candidates who have opened their campaigns. Many of Mayor Nenshi’s previous challengers have touched on the fact that they believe Nenshi has a hold on the position, leading them to not run in this election. There has been a great amount of coverage on institutions trying to get their voices heard in City Council, but there has been no leader that has begun to rally support for Calgary’s highest office.

Mayor Rob Ford
Mayor Ford of Toronto

Toronto: Rob Ford is probably one of the most notorious mayors in Canada. First elected in 2000 to city council, when he got elected as Mayor of Toronto in 2010, he began a record of scandals and mishaps that no other mayor could compete with. Though he attracted praise for fighting against the excesses of Toronto city Councillors in his pre-Mayor terms, his fame has come to him after his election. He has been accused of taking advantage of numerous contracts, putting him in the centre of a conflict of interest scandal (though it was overturned). More recently, however, there have been rumors of a video of Ford smoking crack-cocaine, increasing the media coverage of his actions. Though Ford has yet to specifically acknowledge, deny, or accept these allegations, he has said that rumors about him are false, with this dodge only increasing media interest. Until the video is released, Ford will continue to be in the spotlight – and with the mayoral election still a year and a half away, he will have time to fix his image, though the focus he has put upon Toronto may make it less likely Torontonians will grant him another term.

Vancouver: Vancouver is a city that does not attract as much news as the other cities on this list – not for good reasons or for bad. Their Mayor has done a lot of work in maintaining Vancouver a midst its growth, but has not done anything overly notable. The Mayor, Gregor Robertson, is notable for also being the founder of Happy Planet, and has a relatively clean record, with many of his scandals fixed or forgotten about soon after they occur. Robertson seems to be a similar position to Nenshi, with no one person able to lead the opposition against him.

Mayor Robertson
Mayor Robertson of Vancouver

Mayors have been seemingly random in their influences on the cities they lead, but their leadership is essential, no matter what is happening in the city or what the state of the economy is. Toronto has lost some of the economic dominance it once held over Canada over the course of Ford’s tenure, and though it can still earn it back, every citizen who votes in a municipal election should always be aware of the great power that all mayors have over their city, and how important it is to choose a great leader for the position.

What it’s like to be an Otafest maid!

IMG_20130518_162358

The past few months, I had the pleasure of working with dedicated volunteers who helped with the 2013 Otafest Maid Cafe. We had to learn how to do the dance featured in Secret’s Shy Boy video and then during the weekend of Otafest, greet and serve customers!

Overall, volunteering was a ton of fun and very exhausting! Some of the organizers stayed past midnight on Friday to set the cafe (which was beautiful, by the way) and there was a lot of dancing and running around the entire weekend.

IMG_20130518_154240 (1)

The guests were pretty great and fun to be around, and with their help, the Maid Cafe raised over $2000 for the Canadian Mental Health Association Calgary Branch! Just so you know, Otafest raised a whopping  $12 000 this year.  And it’s all thanks to the awesome con-goers!

For those who were not able to make it, you can still attend Otafest Aurora in November! For those who are interested in helping out, more information will be posted on their forum! You do not need to learn a dance for the Aurora convention.

Here is one of the takes from this year’s Otafest dance:

Pastissets Recipe

0

I was cooking up a recipe for my Spanish class the other day, and I came across this surprisingly easy and very delicious recipe for traditional Spanish sugar cookies, or pastissets. This recipe is seriously easy – only a handful of ingredients are needed to make a soft, moist, melt-in-your-mouth type cookie with an added twist.

For this recipe, you’ll need:

1 cup butter at room temperature

1 egg

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 cup of sugar (adjust this based on how sweet you like your cookies- I found this amount to yield only a slightly sweet cookie, nothing to noticeable or extreme)

1 tablespoon lemon zest (again, adjust based on your own preferences, but note that this is the ingredient that makes this recipe different from the average sugar cookie)

Confectioner’s sugar for dusting
1. Start by combining the butter, sugar, egg, and lemon zest together. To make this process easier, cut up the butter into small cubes.
2. Add the flour and cinnamon to the butter mixture. Knead the ingredients into a soft dough.
3. On a floured surface, roll out the dough to a preferable width. Using a cookie cutter (I used the rim of a cup for this), cut out pieces to make your cookies. However, be sure not to make your cookies too thin, as they do turn out quite soft and tend to crack easier the thinner they are.
l
4. Align the cookies onto an ungreased baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees F.
sheet
5. Dust with confectioner’s sugar if desired, and enjoy!

A Stroll Through Spring, a photo collection

Instead of spending my evening sprawled on the couch in sweats writing this blog post, in celebration of the long weekend, if not the rain that Fernie has been having, I went for a walk. At least rain makes things green and spring-like, which is why I brought my camera. Even if you didn’t go away for the long weekend, you too can enjoy some of the beautiful BC spring.

Bricks

Nothing like a rainy day to make even the smallest things beautiful, vibrant, and full of life

Bike

Here’s an old CCM bike, circa 1960s. None of these “retro” things make me want to be modern, the memories of the old are so much more unique then the generic and new

Tree

The sky behind the tree was beautiful, but I thought the greens in this photo were amazing, so I used this one anyway

Car

More old things! This is an International Harvester truck, just a little older then the bike. Where’s a poodle skirt when I need it?

Fence

Even the grass is super green right now from all the rain, I’m surprised this fence wasn’t more covered in moss

Traintrack

Nature always tries to reclaim its own, but sometimes it blends with civilization, each world giving something to complete the whole

Sky

The sky always gets so beautiful right at sunset before everything gets dark

Ally

I didn’t even notice the rocks on the wall until after I took the picture, good thing I have my camera, so many things would go unnoticed without it
