Picture of the Day: Proud Robin Father Rides Horse

0

This photo is anything but conventional.  Yes that is a robin, yes he is indeed sitting on a horse and yes, I took this picture.  The title of this blog post however, seems not at all fitting for the scene and may have raised some eyebrows so let me clear a few things up.  This lovely bird has been inhabiting my backyard for the last month or so.  He takes his customary post on the fence, on the tip of our pine tree or on top of the weather vane like in this case and keeps watch literally from early morning to late at night.  To me, this was rather puzzling behaviour until I finally realized that he must have a nest with eggs/young chicks in our neighbour’s yard and has taken his guard duty to protect his babies very seriously.  I have seen him scare away any other bird that dares to step foot (flight?) into our yard.  I find this so heartwarming, especially at a time when our city has been ravaged by floods and humans and animals alike are all suffering the consequences.

This was our Calgary Zoo during the flooding time the little Island in the middle of the river. During the flood, a lot of Calgarians offered their help — through various ways! And zoo staff had worked really hard to save those needing the most help —- The  Animals. The Calgary Human Society opened their facility to shelter animals there are affected from the flood.  The Calgary Zoo is currently still cleaning up. So, visit them and see their hard work and the awesome staff when their open! You can donate to The Calgary Human Society too, to support them!

Chocolate Cupcakes with Rainbow Strawberry Buttercream!

Summer is the perfect time of year to get delicious and ripe seasonal fresh fruit. In celebration of the end of the school year why not make a batch of chocolate cupcakes with strawberry buttercream icing? To add a whimsical touch, try rainbow icing; a fun and easy way to decorate your cupcakes uniquely. Piping bags and other cake supplies can be found at stores such a Michaels, Bulk Barn, and Walmart. I personally found three different

colours of icing look best together, plus its easier to achieve.

The strawberry buttercream got its fantastic flavour from pureed strawberries, which were added to the buttercream. While the recipe called for four to five tablespoons, the icing tasted best with all the puree added, giving the icing a stronger strawberry flavour. Due to the amount of icing sugar in the icing, it was quite rich and sweet. However, it was offset by the darkness of the cocoa powder in the cake, the fruitiness of the strawberry accenting the bittersweetness of the chocolate perfectly. All in all the cake is quite rich, and goes perfectly with a glass of milk.

The cake was easy to make, and was done right on time. While the icing was also simple to make, it took more time; as the icing sugar had to be added gradually to keep the icing smooth and even. Icing the cupcakes was messy to say the least, especially refilling the bags.

To make rainbow icing, divide the batch of icing into three bowls. Mix a different colour of food dye into each

Putting the colours in separate piping bags all within another piping bag keeps the colours looking crisp and clear.

bowl. Fill three separate piping bags with the bowls of icing. Put all three piping bags into another piping bag, after cutting the tips off. Cut the tip off the final piping bag, and test the icing on a plate or paper towel, to make sure it works. Pipe the cupcakes as normal, and refill piping bags as necessary.

The combination of super sweet strawberry buttercream perfectly complimented the richness of the chocolate cupcake, with the rainbow icing they could have passed off for a professionally made dessert. I’d definitely recommend using fresh strawberries over any alternative; the fruitiness they blend into the icing cannot be replicated. Strawberry buttercream is also a great way to liven up an old chocolate cake recipe, as well as tasting great on vanilla cake.

Explore: a French Immersion Summer Program

1

So…it’s summer! What do have planned? Going on vacation? Summer school?

In July, I’m off to Saint-Jean University in La Pocatière, Quebec for a full French immersion program called Explore. Explore is a five-week, French-language bursary  summer program that allows you to:

logo_en

1. Discover and learn French in a new region of Canada (usually Quebec) with covered expenses (meaning it’s free!)

2. Meet and explore new people from across Canada

3. Live at a university and get a taste of college life

It’s late to register for this summer, but definitely consider applying for next year. The program is open to all ages above 16 and you can find out more here. The application is very simple so getting in to the program is easy!

For the next month, I will be posting picture blogs showcasing the activities, scenery, and opportunities that Explore provides to its students. Hopefully, these posts will help you decide whether the program is right for you. See you in the weeks to come!

Online festival listings to the rescue

0
WPWFestival
From the World Partnership Walk 🙂

Summer in Cowtown is the prime “festival season” as it is a “construction season”; the vibrancy is meant to be taken in through participation, not realizing you have missed out on the fun after hearing about it through post-festival media coverage! Here is a set of festival listings that I have found to be useful (and friendly for visitors, volunteers, and all alike!)

Calgary Culture’s Summer Festival Guide

FotorCalgaryCulture

This is a straightforward set of listings for June, July and August with the website link provided. I adore the theme and the neat clip art that has been inserted, but a caveat of this link is that it doesn’t contain festival listings for the rest of the year.

Discover Calgary’s Calgary Festivals Travel Guide

DiscoverCalgary

If scroll down the list on this webpage, the list of events has already grown to the point with May staples such as Otafest and the Lilac Festival already making their appearances after ones scheduled for this year. While this list does take longer to scroll and there aren’t any search filters filters, the promient website link button for each festival is a plus.

Visit Calgary’s “Things To Do” festivals section

FotorVisitCalgary

Visit Calgary’s page has greatly expanded info for every one of the festivals mentioned in their listing, including Google Map directions (you just gotta enter your start point) and photo slideshows. The order of the festivals are organized in a strange manner – it doesn’t look like they are organized by date as the two other listing are.

FestivalSeekers and their Calgary listing

FotorFestivalSeekersEdited

Despite their Calgary listing being a bit more compact in size compared to other listings, FestivalSeekers features festivals from all over BC and Alberta, which means smaller towns such as Hinton, Kelowna, and Salmon Arm receive some love from this site. In addition to their website, they also tweet plenty on @FestivalSeekers and they also promote festivals on their Youtube channel.

Great Calgary Festivals

FotorGCFedited

What I am really looking forward to from this website particularly is their passport program where we will be able to scan QR codes at the festivals they have listed. There is a lot of potential in having stamp opportunities as they will hopefully encourage more attendance.

And that is my 5! If you have any links you would like me to include or you want me to add on any info you can provide, drop me a comment down below! 🙂 Also, we will be covering lots of festivals under the tag “yycstreetfestivals”, so be sure to check the reviews here!

The Story of Stuff

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLBE5QAYXp8

We buy stuff everyday, no matter if it’s food, water, pen, pants, paper, paint, computer, shoes ……… Just A LOT of things, but wait a minute, do you ever realize where do they go after you trash it? or even what it takes to make some really simple stuff, like a pen! So, I went to do some research and watched a video called — The Story Of Stuff. It talks all about how our “produce – buy – dump” system hurts our environment. Have you ever thought about that before? Here are some tips to help save our environment.

Be earth’s friend! Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, Rethink, Remember ………. (As many as you can think of!)

reduce1. Reduce

-Instead of buying new stuff that you’re not going to use very often, see if you can borrow it.

-Save energy by turning off lights

– Turn off the tap when you are brushing your teeth

-You can reduce waste by using a computer — watch the news and read magazines online instead of buying paper copies

-Use your car less, use public transit more to reduce pollution

2. Reuse3_reuse

-Store food in plastic containers – use LESS plastic wrap

-Use reusable grocery bags instead of plastic bags

-Use both sides of writing paper

-Plastic containers and reusable lunch bags are great ways to take your lunch to school in a more environmentally friendly way

3. Recycle

ap140i1Battery, Light blubs, Computer, Electronics, Cell Phones  – Drop it off in specific collection areas – Never in landfills, the chemical and materials in them pollutes the environment.

Paper, Cans, Plastic – Just in a recycling bin is good 🙂

– Recycle any materials you can to reduce waste! – But just remember to rinse it before recycling.

4. RethinkReThink-Long-Island-Waste-Disposal-Hierarchy-Reduce-Reuse-Recycle

Not to buy any extra products which you won’t use. THINK BEFORE YOU BUY! Save your money and protect the environment

remember-brain5. Remember

Keep all these 5 R’s in mind or at least 3 to protect our valuable environment

ENJOY YOUR DAY!

The Timelapse Tales – To capture the flood of Calgarians’ spirit

The physical impact of the flooding in Calgary remains yet to be fully seen, but the awareness for the bond we have to our city is an aspect growing more prominent day by day. Let this video be a source of hope that’s needed to carry out the recovery –

VIDEO HAUL: Weather News

Just thought, since all of the terrible events that unfolded on Calgary. It would be nice just to see some happy and uplifting weather news. In Vancouver, Global News: BC 1 meteorologist, Kristi Gordon, was doing the Noon News Hour segment until something frightened her.  A spider had found his way onto the live news camera of Downtown Vancouver. Since then, Gordon’s reaction has gone viral. Reaching over 3 500 000 views. So enjoy!

Summer Movies What to See, What to Skip

0

Since school has been shut since Thursday, I have had the chance to see a few movies. Some in the theatre, some on dvd, so here are some mini reviews of the hottest movies for the summer!

Monsters University

Rate: 8.5/10

Review: It tied in wonderfully with the first story, it was cute however the humour was decent. Not as funny as some other Disney movies but it had it’s moments. I wish they would have had some more of the other characters from the original movie and how they met the famous duo Mike and Sully for example, I wanted to see how Mike met Celia (his girlfriend in the original movie).

World War Z

Rate: 6/10

Review: I really do love zombies, but the whole franchise of zombie movies is getting old, there’s only so much you can do without it being a broken record situation. It was  interesting but not gripping to your seat, the graphics were also up to par. I wish they would have cast the main character for acting skills rather than the fame factor, as Brad Pitt was the lead, he is decent but I would have like to seen someone I haven’t seen much of before.

Oz the Great and Powerful

Rate: 4/10

Review: A movie if you want something casual to watch when you are bored, but that’s about it. It was cheesy and bland but not so terrible that I couldn’t finish it. I loved the character Finley (the monkey) and the graphics were decent. I wouldn’t recommend watching unless you are a die hard Wizard of Oz fan.

The Possession

Rate: 5.5/10

Review: I was really looking forward to this movie when I saw the trailer, however I was disappointed. It was more story than scary, it focused  a lot on this single father trying to find a way to stop the possession using the Jewish Religion more than trying to scare the audience with the possession that was happening. Like most horror movies, the scariest moments were in the last half an hour of the movie or were shown in the trailer, but even at that, it wasn’t very shocking or scary.

So I hope that helps you make some decisions about what to watch this summer! Happy watching!

Mac or PC Which Is Better, You Decide

0

 intro1

What do you think is better Mac or PC?

Before we get too far in, I will be using the term PC as a replacement for Windows even though the term personal computer does apply to both.

We will go through a few differences and you can decide for yourself which is better

First I will discuss price, then software, and lastly security.

right_price

Price is the most major difference between PC and Mac. For example, if you were to buy a Mac Book Air for $1000, the value of the computer would be much lower than its PC counterpart. This is because Mac has its own operating system which is hard to get on a PC. Therefore, Mac fans are forced to pay a premium because Apple lacks competition in that sector. On the other hand PC has lots of competition which gives you lots of choice on design as well as price range.

steamIcon copy

One of the most important reasons that PC has captured a larger part of the computer industry is because software is developed for it. For recreational use of computers, PC is more chosen due to the wider selection of Software. Steam is a program which allows you to purchase and launch games and some software without a disc or having to head to EB games or BestBuy. In this program, there are only approximately 180 games playable on Mac while there are more than 1300 on PC.

Key-on-screen

Because most computers run windows, most virus attacks focus on PC but rarely harm Macs. As Macs popularity and market share increases, virus attacks will eventually grow with it. However a Mac owner who has no security software installed is less likely to get a virus than a PC user.

Now that I have explained the differences between Mac and PC, would the difference in price affect your choice between them? Would the fact that there is a much wider variety of software for Pc affect your choice? Knowing that viruses target PCs more than Macs, would that affect your choice? Personally I prefer PCs over Macs because of the variety in software. I would make sure that I have a good Anti-virus installed before downloading anything onto my PC. Thank you for listening.

From their Facebook

Summer break is just around the corner for most students and I just want to get the word out there of a cool program happening this summer called the Seminar on the United Nations and International Affairs. It is a weeklong camp for teenagers that focuses on international issues through debates with representatives of the United Nations and the Canadian Department of National Defence. This year, the camp will be held twice from August 11-16 and August 18-23 at the Goldeye Centre in Nordegg, AB.

Students attending the SUNIA programme will learn through interactive simulations as well hands-on experiences, including a simulated session of the United Nations Security Council. During the session, participants will be dealing with issues many countries face today, such as immigration, security and foreign policy. Through this Security Council session, students become familiar with conflicts in the world today, as well as the process of international diplomacy.

Outside of the classroom, participants will be enjoying the summer at the Goldeye Centre right beside the Rocky Mountains. Activities throughout the week will include canoeing and swimming on Lake Goldeye, hiking on the mountains and field games such as soccer, ultimate and football. In case of rain, the Goldeye Centre offers an indoor gymnasium, as well as a recreation area with activities such as ping-pong and foozball.

There are still some spots left in the SUNIA program, so make sure you register soon. There are also scholarships and a sponsorship package for those who require financial assistance. Nonetheless, make sure you check out their website for some more pictures and to sign up.

Underground parking garages with a twist for cyclists

0

Urban planning here in Calgary need to account for the parking crunch; in Japan, bike storage is gobbling up prime real estate that is hard to come by in such an urbanized country. Engineers created underground parkades to solve the car crunch, so now they have devised a method to park all those bicycles and at the same time eliminating graffiti and theft, two of the biggest issues with cyclists.

I think this is pretty cool –

This would be a hefty premium to implement globally, but let me know your opinions down below! 🙂

Mayor’s Environment Expo 2013- Animal Welfare

0

MayorEnvironmentBanner2011 IMAG0584

I went to The Mayor’s Environment Expo on June 8th and came across a really special booth, and a great conversation with the organization founder – Carol W. Tracey.

1. How happy are your food? — Say NO to factory farmingIMAG0586

If I ask you “How happy are your meat(food)?” What will your answer be? I found it’s really unfair to our animals because we enjoy them but sometimes we mistreat them. They don’t get a say, how people should raise the them (pigs, cows, sheep, chicken etc.). How bad the animals living environments can be. The inhuman conditions they are in. You might ask “How do I buy Happy meat then?” I would say buy from the Farmers Market! Or buy from a company/producer that you know are responsible. Support the people who are protecting our animals welfare! Buy Happy And Eat Happy 🙂

IMAG0583

2. Animal Circus – No to animal abuse! (They are NOT money maker)

Do you enjoy the entertainment time in circus? Or watching a movies ? There is another important thing I have learned in this booth, it’s about animal abuse by circus and on movies. I would like to draw your attention to the importance of people abusing animals to earn money as our animal are not suppose to do that in a normal way – especially an aging elephant.

3. Eating Contest?IMAG0585

I watched an article about eating contest in Calgary. I personally don’t argee with those kind of contest, if they have money to do those kind of wasting food contest why not donating food to people in need? What do you think about this form of contest?

Want to learn more about the organization? Talk to the founder directly! (She is so NICE!)
