You know when you’re casually browsing the internet for a new song, or a certain picture? But, before you know it, you’ve spent four hours online and are watching a video on training special breeds of giraffes? Suddenly you’ve found yourself in the weird part of the internet. I got stuck in the deep, dark depths of the web the other day, where I discovered some of the most bizarre animals I’ve ever seen. Here are my top three finds.
Theridion Grallator (The Happy Face Spider)
Theridion Grallator, or the happy face spider, is a Hawaiian spider, most commonly known for the cartoon happy face markings on its bright yellow abdomen. This creepy arachnid can grow up to 5 mm (0.20 in) long and is know to locals as “stilt walker” due to its long, spindly legs.
The Blob Fish
The blobfish is a deep sea fish that inhabits mainly the waters of Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania. They are typically 30 cm long and live at depths between 600 m and 1,200 m. Blobfish have gelatinous flesh, allowing them to float barely above the sea floor without any effort. Did I mention they look like sad old men?
Angora Rabbit
Popular for their long and soft wool, these giant fluff balls weigh in at 4-7 lb and were some of the very first domesticated rabbits. The angora looks more like a cotton ball than a rabbit and I want 10 of them. Could you imagine this fluffy beast thumping around your house?
2013 was a great year, with a lot of great video games. Here are my top five.
5. Battlefield 4
Even though Battlefield 4 had a rough start, it is slowly improving. I chose this game because of the top-of-the-line graphics.
4. Saints Row 4
Saints Row 4 is a fairly good game containing free roam and a storyline allowing you to either follow a few of the characters from the previous game through the storyline or do whatever you fancy and run around causing chaos. It could have been a bit harder but you’re playing the game to watch the story unfold.
3. The Last Of us
I have not personally played this game but I have seen lots of good footage and heard lots of good things about it. The main reason that I chose this game over many others is because of the gameplay and the storyline.
2. Warframe
Warframe is an MMO shooter slightly like Borderlands, with a much more sci-fi feel to it. The biggest reason that I like this game is the concept and that it eventually will have crossplay between the PC and the PS4, which is quite interesting.
1. Assassins Creed IV Black Flag
I really loved this game because of the character development and how you get to know and love (or dislike) the characters in this game. You also have the ability to roam freely through the world and sink ships and capture forts.
Co-founder of PayPal, CEO & Chief Product Architect of Tesla Motors, and CEO & CTO of Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), Elon Musk is one of the most innovative figures in the world. He is also the inspiration for Tony Stark, Ironman. The 42-year-old entrepreneur and industrialist focuses on making the world a better place but at the same time looking for other alternative planets and places for humans to live. He looks at the flaws of humanity today: our reliance on non-renewable resources and a plan B if Earth suddenly becomes inhabitable (meteorite strike, etc.). Musk says that he can’t bear a future no better than the past.
Tesla Motors first started to gain popularity with Model S. This model was for an electric car that consisted of soaring profits. Now, there are plans for even more such as an SUV variant, a compact car, and possibly a pickup truck.
SpaceX is the first private company to send and return a spacecraft into low Earth orbit and in 2012, it was the first private company to supply the International Space Station with cargo. He also started to talk about an eventual mission to Mars that has the objective of colonization.
Falcon 9 – SpaceX
Currently, Musk has proposed even more models for new inventions. Firstly, the Hyperloop is going to be a transportation system that contains capsules that ride on cushions of air that can transport humans their cargo between San Francisco and Los Angeles in 30 minutes. Or let’s look at his desire for an electric plane that could travel at supersonic speeds and can vertically take off and land. We can also look at his new software that can design a rocket with 3D images and motion controls.
The Hyperloop
With all his inventions and accomplishments, Elon Musk is truly the greatest innovator of our time.
Intel is one of the many global exhibitors at CES 2014.
What will the year of 2014 signify? In the technology realm, many revolutionaries believe that 2014 will be the year of change in consumer technologies. The international Consumer Electronics Show (CES), occurring in Las Vegas, Nevada, this month, is a compilation of various exhibitors presenting their innovative technologies to consumers for the first time. CES is a huge tradeshow with over 3,200 exhibitors from over 150 countries, ranging from manufacturers to suppliers of technology hardware.
With devices such as visual 3D headphones (the Vuzix V720 video headphones), a bracelet that monitors how long you have been outside in the sun (Netatmo’s Sun tracking “June” bracelet) and a car with laser beams for headlights (Audi Sport Quattro), the year 2014 has started with a bang… and this is only the beginning. Check out more cool gadgets released at CES 2014 here.
“The first eight to 10 years I went [to CES], you’d see the same technologies wrapped up a little bit differently. Now, you’re seeing very relevant and significant improvements in technology.”– Tony Sandhu, VP, Merchandising for Future Shop
The tradeshow has four days worth of exciting innovation. Consumers can look forward to many more developments in the market of technology. 2014 is indefinitely the year where humanity embarks upon the age of technological breakthroughs. Change is a beautiful thing.
This hotel has to be one of the most innovative and creative hotel sarong the world. It is an original and spectacular place if you want to go somewhere where there is a new and refreshing vibe. People say this hotel really proved how there are no limits when it comes to attracting people from all over the world. You may think that’s it’s very cold, but both warm and cold accommodation is available. The cool thing about this hotel is that it is 200 km north of the Arctic Circle. There is actual one room that is the Northern Lights room, thats comes with a ceiling clear so the guests can see the Northern Lights.
ATLANTIS IN DUBAI
Dubai is where the hotels are generally taken to the extreme. Hotel Atlantis is known worldwide. It is so big and eye-catching. If people go to Dubai, they definitely drop by and take a look at this hotel, even if they are not planning to stay there. Also, did you know that it has underwater rooms? When you wake up in the morning you can look out at the fish.
ATTRAP REVES (BUBBLE HOTEL)
Have you ever thought of sleeping in a bubble? For people who love to sleep in utter darkness, this may not be on top of your list. An eye mask for the people who like darkness is key, and you still get to enjoy the hotel. However, for someone like me I would enjoy being able to look out at the starts at night and see the moon. Couples who have been here say that it astounds them. The cool thing about this hotel is that each bubble is secluded, thus you are not worried about other guests interrupting you.
Just think, in a couple of days, thousands of students will be back to hitting the books after a well-deserved Christmas break. I don’t think that I’m the only one who notices that students aren’t as focusedand ready to work as most teachers and parents would like to see. How can we beat the obvious lag that comes after being away from school for a longer period of time?
Set goals
Goals are a huge part of success. If you have no idea what you’re working towards, there really isn’t a way to gauge if you’ve gotten where you want to be. Set simple goals or guidelines such as, “By the end of today, I want to finish half of the math homework that’s due on Friday.” By setting smaller goals, you’ll feel like you’re getting more done and accomplishing more than you would if you were putting all of your work towards one huge goal. On the contrary, you can also make a large goal and split it into smaller, manageable steps. For example, if you have a big Social Studies project due in a week, split up the work necessary into a logical sequence that will help you stay on track (tip: write it out as a checklist).
Time Manage
If you have no way to manage your time, you are more likely to end up distraught and stressed out over work you never had time to do. I know it sounds like something your pretentious junior high health teacher told you to do, but hold an agenda and plan out your time. This will help you keep track of deadlines, extracurriculars and will help you evaluate your progress based on an entire outcome. I think that the biggest rule for time management is DO NOT PROCRASTINATE. I’m a bit of a hypocrite in this respect. Don’t leave work to the last minute. It’ll end up rushed and of poor quality. Instead, start off by completing small sections of a piece of work or studying reduced parts of a unit so that it seems like less work and you don’t end up leaving it all until the night before your due date/test.
Try not to get distracted
Whether you’re in class listening to a lesson, working in a group or independently at school or at home, distractions will be your kryptonite. Try to listen to your teachers and if you need to take notes in order to be able to focus, do just that. Don’t let your attention drift to something completely inconsequential because you’ll likely miss important details and end up confused anyway. Keeping work to itself and not trying to do something else at the same time is important. If you tend to listen to music while working, try to kick the habit unless it’s something that actually helps you to stay focused. Watching TV and texting or going on Facebook while working won’t get you anywhere either. Your attention will be drifting from one thing to another and you won’t end up really getting anything accomplished.
Just remember, work habits and kicking the back-to-school blues are all about intention. If you are truly wanting to succeed in getting back to a normal routine, you are more likely to get where you want to be.
It’s 2014! You know what that means… New Year’s Resolutions all around. After all, an new year can bring a new you, right? Maybe not. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind people who make resolutions, and I don’t hate the idea of them, but in all honesty, who actually manages to stick with them throughout the next year?
In the past, whenever I tried to make a new year’s resolution, it never really went well and I ending up not doing it. Try as I might to keep my resolutions, I always ended up breaking them one way or another. As a result, I just stopped making them. In hindsight, this was likely because I wasn’t yet ready to keep the goal.
According to this article, 45 per cent of Americans make New Year’s resolutions, but 25 per cent of them give up on their resolutions by the second week of January. Stats on this site also show only eight per cent of people in a study done were successful at achieving their resolution.
So why have so many people in the past, including me, fail to accomplish their New Year’s resolutions? I think it just has to do with the difference between what we expect and what we actually end up doing. We expect to accomplish our goals, but eventually give up on it because we’re not committed enough to actually do it.
If you are going to make a resolution to do something, than make sure you have at least plan it out first. Just saying you’re going to do something doesn’t mean that you actually will be able to do it. It would be short-sighted to say that you have a resolution to do and not have some sort of a plan to maintain it. Like Audrey said in her article, goals should be made when you’re ready to make them, not because you’re supposed to just because it’s the start of a new year. If you do have a goal in mind that you are determined to keep this year, follow Rebecca’s CAT principle, Commitment, Ambitious, and Timely.
As for me, I’ll make a goal that I want to accomplish when I know I can actually plan it out and achieve it. Until then, I won’t be making any New Year’s resolutions any time soon.
Every year without fail most people I know make serious and purposeful proclamations of the phenomenal advancements to themselves and for themselves that they will be making in the new year. Yet next Christmas, it tends to be unlikely that they’ll have kept that gym membership, continued to eat plenty of leafy green vegetables, or even simply made more time for themselves. Whatever your resolution is, I’m sure that you want to see that it sticks, so that come 2015 you won’t be making the same
Making unattainable goals is a surefire path to giving up http://www.lovethispic.com/image/57884/new-years-resolutions
declaration you are this year. Here’s how:
1. Set realistic goals
This may sound a little obvious, but even a slight overstep can cause even the resolutions with the most firm of intent to fail. I mean, you don’t just walk out of your house and embark on an expedition to everest, there has to be steps and gradual progress made. For example, if your resolution is to lose 30 pounds, try with something more attainable, like five pounds, and then another five and so on. This way, your goal won’t seem quite so distant and unreachable, and you’ll be a lot less likely to just give up.
2. Make your goal something you want
Again, this tip might sound a little silly, and you might be thinking “What? Of course I want this, it’s my resolution isn’t it?” but its surprising when we think about it how much of our actions are the result of
other peoples’ opinions. If your mom/dad/sister/brother/other family member/significant other/friends have been pushing you to eat heather/go to the gym/do better in school/ext. and this “thing” that everyone else wants so desperately for you becomes, ta da, your resolution, then well, I’m sorry to break it to you, but that isn’t YOUR resolution, its what other people want for you! Make your resolution not what other people suggest, not what you think you should want, but what YOU want for YOU! It’s a simple as that!
3. Make a list of the pros and cons
Ok so you’ve got your super fabulous, extra realistic goal in mind and you’re ready to go! Not so fast though, if you want to stick with it you need to consider exactly why you’ve made the decision you’ve made. Its time to think of the pros and cons of you’re goal, or conversely, not fulfilling your goal. Weighing the benefits will not only put things in perspective for you, but looking at the negatives of not
http://news.consultingtools.com/?p=200
fulfilling the goal, while contrasting the positives of going through with it will further strengthen your resolve.
4. Set “triggers” for yourself
A lot of the time, when people don’t end up meeting their resolution it simply be because, like most of us I’m sure, are just too busy, and their resolution becomes drowned in a tidal wave of other responsibilities, chores, and well, life in general. Once you’ve fallen out of the habit of your resolution, it becomes easily forgotten until its time to make next year’s resolution (oh no!). A great way to make sure that your resolution does not get forgotten about or swept away by the onset of time, life and the plethora of activities that come with it, is to set little reminders for yourself, “triggers” if you will, that will nag at you to persist with your goal. For example, if your goal is to eat more vegetables, then get more vegetables in your life, put them in snack bags to take with you, keep your counters well stocked as well as your fridge. If your goal is to go to the gym more, keep your gym stuff ready to go in a bag near your front door. There are no excuses when your resolution is staring you straight in the face even in the comfort of your own home!
5. Let go
Sometimes a goal might not be the right fit, and something you decided last December just might not be working by July. This is ok. Letting go of your original goal and modifying it to fit you and where your at is completely ok. It doesn’t mean you failed, it means that your original goal was unrealistic (see #1!) and that you’ve recognized that, and you’re going to continue to try to reach towards a better you. If you get to this point, you should congratulate yourself, not only for making it this far, but also for recognizing what is attainable and what is not. That’s a major achievement, and definitely one worth continuing to strive for.
I think that the gist of it really is that while it is a new year it’s not a new you. It’s the same you as it was before clock struck 12, and no magical transformation has occurred. A resolution is not meant to be easy, or we all would have done it already. A new year doesn’t mean a new you, but with work, it can certainly mean a better you.
I was lucky enough to catch an exhibit called: Chihuly in the gardens at The Desert Botanical Gardens in Phoenix, Arizona this week. The exhibit which is being showcased in Phoenix until May 18 is filled with some pretty amazing glass sculptures by Dale Chihuly, who is most famous for creating the glass flowers on the ceiling in the lobby of the Bellagio Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas strip. Here are a few pictures of the many amazing sculptures that I photographed with my Nikon 1 camera:
So if you do happen to be in Phoenix between now and May 18, I really do hope you stop by the Desert Botanical Gardens to come see this lovey exhibit and the rest of the park! It truly is something you will never forget.
It seems like everywhere you turn in this city, there’s a restaurant. A cafe. An ethnic food place. A diner. A steakhouse. A fast food joint. For foodies like me, this is both a blessing and a major headache.
All the choices and diversity = a blessing.
Having to sift through a nearly infinite list and the mehs = a headache.
So when I discover a place that seems perfect in nearly all ways, my mind (and mouth) explodes with triumph.
Sure, we had to wait 40 minutes for a table for two, but that wasn’t a problem. At a place like Dairy Lane Cafe, the wait time merely heightens the anticipation. Down some coffee or tea while you wait. Just make sure you wait. DO NOT LEAVE.
Before I get to the food itself, let’s look at something that really makes Dairy Lane stand out: the little things. The fresh bathroom with wonderful soap. The organic tea. The cozy, quirky decor. The friendliness and devotion of the staff. A ton of other things that I don’t have time to write about.
On the other hand, the cons, in my opinion, are limited to one: it’s very cozy. Even with the limited amount of seating overall, the space is quite crowded. Whatever. Once you taste your meal, it becomes irrelevant.
Oh right. The meal itself! Don’t stress too much with the menu, becomes you really can’t go wrong. You can be sure that your meal will be sustainable, fresh, expertly prepared, full of quality ingredients, and insanely, incredibly, unbelievably delicious. Plus, there’s an abundant selection of vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free choices.
I had the Grilled Chicken Tacos (“Tequila lime dressing, fresh cilantro, salsa fresca, refried beans, queso freso cheese.” $14), with the mandarin side salad (which was adorned with a sesame seed dressing). A burst of freshness and flavour. Within those three corn tortillas was down-to-earth goodness that is much to rare these days.
For real, honest, virtuous food that is guaranteed to please, comfort, and refresh, head to Dairy Lane Cafe.
As if all this wasn’t enough, certain meals are further elevated by the fact that they are part of the MealShare program, meaning if you order one of the designated choices, someone in need also gets a meal! Even more reason to try the Eggnog French Toast (“Three slices of eggnog spiced Engel’s white bread, dulce de leche, salted pecan crumble, house cat hash browns.” $15).
Sure, the prices are a bit higher than your average breakfast or lunch joint, but it is well worth it.
If you haven’t been to Dairy Lane Cafe yet, aren’t there right now, or don’t have plans to go soon, something needs to change. Fast.
The magic of the ball drop is a unique part of New Year’s Eve, but nothing epitomizes it like being in the same time zone as New York. Watching it on TV shows that there are a lot of other people that have the same defining moment that starts their new year!
In 2011 a movie called “New Year’s Eve” came out, and ever since it has been critically acclaimed. Some say it is a great movie, some don’t like it at all.
Last year when I watched the movie on New Year’s Eve, I was actually in the same time zone, and even though I called it a night shortly after 2013 was a reality, the mood conveyed by the movie together with watching the ball drop and being with family was awesome!
As an early New Year’s Resolution, let’s look on the positive side of things: What is great about this movie?
Well, it starts with all the actors that show their talent on the big screen: Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Robert De Niro, Halle Berry, Alyssa Milano, Jessica Biel, Seth Meyers, Til Schweiger, Katherine Heigl, John Bon Jovi, Sofia Vergara, Russell Peters, Ashton Kutcher, Lea Michele, Sarah Jessica Parker, Josh Duhamel, and many, many more! There’s someone for everyone, the diversity is truly amazing, and the whole family will have a part they love.
One of the best parts of the movie is that it is made up of a number of different stories, which all work together beautifully! The stories show that NYE can be stressful, exciting, beautiful, but that in the last hours of the old year, it is never too late to make dreams and wishes come true. A concert, a hospital stay, pregnancies, a stuck elevator and much more – a movie with such variety, hardly found in any other movie!
Talking more about the content of the movie would take away the magic and excitement that comes with watching it, so we will leave it at that!
Be it the heartfelt moments in the movie, the funny ones, or those that make us reflect on our own lives, in the end the audience can take away that the magic of NYE touches everyone, after all a New Year is a New Beginning!
Beginning a new year is scary since it is a whole new 365 days ahead of us again, but it is also wonderful and the beginning of something new and exciting!
One more note: @TreeHugger has this year’s NYE Ball Drop Electricity Provision covered. It’s quite interesting; check it out!
Reigning in the new year means one thing: life-changing resolutions. Many strive for a better body, an unlikely personality change, or perhaps something more generic, such as “exercise more.” But I choose the rational route to resolutions. After several years of failure to realize most of my previous, more ostentatious goals—three years ago, I made it one of my resolutions to be fluent in Japanese within a one-year time frame—I have come to the conclusion that one should follow strict principles in creating resolutions. These principles can be summed up in the word “CAT”: C-commitment, choose resolutions you know you can be committed to; A-ambitious, do not be afraid to go big with your resolutions, but know your limitations; T-timely, make sure that your resolution can be achieved in a timely manner.
With these tips in mind, I have created my resolutions of 2014. I resolve to:
1. Quit Netflix– Over this winter holiday, I have realized the dangers of this magnificent, yet addictive website. Netflix—more specifically, my new-found Suits obsession—has curated an addiction that a high-school student should not be involved with. Goodbye Netflix.
2. Get over Leonardo DiCaprio– My ardent fascination DiCaprio has stemmed from years of reveling in his illustrious films and gawking at his efforts to conserve the environment. It has been to the dismay—or laughter—of my fellow peers, whenever I give an unconcealed squeal every time this distinguishable actor appears on screen or is just mentioned in my presence. But it is for whatever is left of my pride, that I must learn to slowly alleviate my obsessionrespectable love for this remarkable being. This time around, I think I will have to let go, Jack.
3. Not use my cellphone to avoid awkward eye contact with people– Everyone can empathize with me, in this new age, where we stifle conversation with others by pulling out our cellphones. Most of the time, we happen to be playing a game of Candy Crush or just scrolling through old messages to make people think that we have a definite sense of popularity and that we have indeed not been neglected by our friends. But—logically speaking—it may be beneficial to start up conversations with those around you and not pretend to be distracted by some “dire” situation on your cellphone. Who cares about being popular, when we can make actual friends.
Reviewing my resolutions, it seems that I have neglected the fundamental principle of creating resolutions; have some fun with it.
At an age where I should probably be bypassing the young adult section of the library completely, I still do, on occasion, find myself looking through the juvenile fiction shelves.
I know they say “don’t judge a book by its cover,” but that’s supposed to be metaphorical, so really, it shouldn’t literally apply to books. Yet, whether it applies or not, I do find myself excessively searching for books with lovely covers (my main reason for picking up Mr Fox), and all to often I find those in the children’s area.
Covers and aesthetics aside, I still enjoy reading children’s literature; it can be just as engaging, and also sometime refreshing (not to mention easy to read). Here are some that I read, and enjoyed, over the past year.
I would have loved to read this when I was little—a fantasy set in a magical woods filled with anthropomorphic animals (as yes, I read nearly every volume of Redwall during elementary), bandits, and incredible illustrations. I also had to read this as it was written by the lead singer of the Decemberists (triple exclamation mark), and illustrated by the same illustrator of the Mysterious Benedict Society.
I particularly love how the illustrations, far from the half-page black and white sort of thing typical of those ridiculouslylongchildren’smystery series, are integrated as art into the novel itself, such as in the style of Abarat or the Leviathan series.
This series dictates the adventures of the governess of three children supposedly and quite literally “raised by wolves.” The story proceeds much as you would expect for such a premise (plenty of mishaps, and so forth) but what I particularly enjoy is the style of writing and the use of extensive names such as the Swanburne Academy for Poor Bright Females and the occasional acronym such as DODO or the Defense of Definitude Office.
This novel is unexpected and adorable—in the end the story of three children setting off to locate their aunt after running into an unexpected complication and their subsequent adventures felt a bit extraneous in comparison to its conclusion, but I loved the narrative style, characters, and setting.
It is not only a fun concept, but it produced a rather fun series; four children and their unusually strong fears are taken on at the School of Fear and under the wing of it’s unorthodox headmistress. I also do love me a good old story about friendship.
I love Target, they have one of the many best apps that will help you save money this holiday season as well. This store is full of good inexpensive goodies also sales items. You see so many great items that u actually end up paying less for. It’s always good to spend less. Plus, electronics and other pricey items that are on sale this time of year, and any other time are good to buy at the lowest value. They cost much more money compared to simple things like gloves. So this is where the Target app for sure comes in handy! If you would consider yourself a frequent shopper at Target, I recommend this app. Also, you can put this app to work if you shop online or in stores. Be sure to use up those Target gift cards you gained over the holiday season. Also, you access to your local store’s ad which gets updated, to keep you on top of everything at all times. I also love the fact that you can have daily deals. And you get twice-a-month coupons sent directly to your phone. Now you won’t spend money unless you know you’re getting the best deal around. To add to everything, it’s free, and for all you money savers it’s a match made I’m heaven!
SHOPKICK
Alright, I saved this one for all those serious shoppers that are out there. This is another free free app and it is said to be amazing! Shopkick is awesome if you are a sucker for retail coupons from stores like Toys R Us and Best Buy you actually receive points by going there. You then can redeem those points for rewards after they build up. Plus, you can browse the app for deals at many of your favorite stores. Here is the best part: even if you don’t find that perfect top that you were looking for, you will still get a good chunk of points with Shopkick just for your A+ efforts! Happy shopping with this app!
SNIPSNAP
If you’re like many people and you hate carrying your coupons to the store, then this app is for you. Many people just forget and leave them at home, which is a human thing to do. But not if you have SnipSnap! This is a fabulous free app and it makes you take a picture of a coupon that can be for anything, and it automatically will store all the coupons in your phone. Then you show your coupons at participating store checkouts. Also, it keeps up with all your expiration dates, so you don’t have to worry. This you will be more organized. Did I also mention that it will update you on which ones expire soon? To add to it all, you can share coupons with all of your friends on social media. It’s a win-win situation. You save money and so do your friends!
