What a cliché: There’s no place like home

Everyone’s heard this one about a million times in their lifetime: The timeless and yet overused expression, “There’s no place like home.” However, we may simply dismiss this as another cliché whose incessant use has deteriorated its true meaning. There’s something about this simple phrase that always strikes a chord with me, regardless of what people these days think of it.

First of all, we need to define “home.” For many people, their home is where they live, but for others, it is where they feel the most wanted, appreciated or involved. Therefore, everyone’s description of home is different and we can’t confine it to a definition, which is one of the major flaws plaguing the societal interpretation of this expression. We need to see it in a broader light.

Home is where you find comfort, solace, joy, love, support and a sense of consistency. For that reason, home may not even be a physical place, but may be another person or a state of being. Heck, it could be a song, book or movie for all it matters. If a specific place doesn’t tick all of the boxes in what quantifies “home”, but an emotion, friend, family member or significant other (as the case may be) does, who’s to say that it isn’t still “home”?

This leads me to my final point: There’s NO Place LIKE HOME. Because of everyone’s distinct interpretation of what a home is, you can’t fit home into a box. Every “home” is different. (Which is why, on a side note, I dislike referring to “home life” because it is in regards to someone’s life at their house, which in many cases may not be their “home.” I prefer to refer to “family life.”) Something cannot be “like” or “different from” home because there’s no reference point. Which is part of the beauty of the expression, “There’s no place like home,” because it makes it very much objective and yet subjective. It is objective in the sense that it’s yes or no; either it’s home or it’s not. Simple as that. But yet, it is subjective, because everyone sees “home” differently.

Nevertheless, no matter what, people will still continue to use this phrase out of context, so I guess what I’m trying to say it that you should always think before you speak because you don’t always know the implications of what you’re saying. Some things may seem as simple as black and white, but have roots deeper than what you can see from the surface.

Video of the Day: How to feel better

0

Nowadays, teens are becoming more and more depressed. In fact, depression and self harm seem to be becoming something that is romanticized on sites like Tumblr. Having been through period of my life being depressed, let me be the first to say, happiness is a lot better than depression. So I found a video on YouTube by the actress, vlogger, directer, and writer Anna Akana, and I found it very helpful. Akana has a wonderful channel and is currently working on writing, directing and starring in short films. She gives great advice and she is hilarious.

Remember, depression is a serious matter, and it isn’t something that should be romanticized or desired. Being happy and excited about life is important, no matter what the situation. Although it might be hard, make every effort to be happy. 🙂

Wonderful YouTubers: blogilates

It’s been quite some time since I updated this series, and I can’t believe I didn’t think of this feature before. Cassey Ho is a certified fitness trainer and creator of POP Pilates. She started up her own YouTube channel, blogilates, four years ago, and is still going strong with over 1.6 million subscribers. Cassey’s personality is glowing and she is truly an inspiration, accomplishing her childhood dream with the upcoming release of her fitness line, BODYPOP.

The energy that Cassey puts into each video is contagious, and although you’re on the floor with shaking abs and sore legs, you can’t help but smile while she leads you through a workout. I love watching her videos because they are so simple and (almost all) of the moves do not require any special equipment.

Many people these days complain about not having enough time to exercise or not knowing where to start, but Cassey provides meal plans, monthly workout calendars, and beginners guides on her website. You can also find tons of healthy and delicious recipes both on her blog and YouTube channel.

Honestly, nobody has a reason not to work out. Even if you exercised for 15 minutes every day for a week, that would add up to an hour and 45 minutes of activity each week! You might be afraid of murderers or shark attacks, but an unhealthy lifestyle is the #1 killer. It can lead to obesity and heart disease (just to name two of the many health complications that arise from not being active), but on the flip side, exercising can help to cure many health problems.

So hit the mat with Cassey and sweat it out! Not only will you look good, you will feel good with increased energy and stamina. “Train like a beast, look like a beauty.”

Finally, I leave you with a challenge. Will you accept it?

Ultimate roommate prank war

2

Last month, YouTube sensation Caspar Lee decided to prank his roommate. When he was visiting the U.S., he called his roommate, Joe Sugg, using Skype and told him that he no longer wanted to live with him in the U.K.  and that he was staying in the U.S. forever.

To get back at Lee, Sugg decided to prank him for an entire week.

Day 1: There was the classic “saran wrap on the toilet” prank.

Day 2: Hiding in the closet scare

Day 3: Covering Caspar’s room in sticky notes.

Day 4: Waking Caspar up dressed like a clown.

Day 5: Waking Caspar up with silly string

Day 6: For the grand finale, Joe covered Caspar’s floor with cups of water.

Both of the boys had very hysterical pranks. But the obvious winner was Joe Sugg, he took the cake for the funniest pranks. Joe got some sweet revenge for what Caspar did to him. There’s always next time Caspar!

Is Guardians of the Galaxy worth your money?

1

My first impressions on this Marvel movie was that it would be heavily focused on comedy rather than the action. But I was wrong. I will be rating this movie based on three things: comedy, story and CGI.

First of all the comedy was great in this movie because they made it funny without taking away from the action you expect from a Marvel movie. I give it 5/5 in comedy.

Secondly, story throughout the movie you continue to learn more about the characters and I really enjoyed the storyline which left the viewer with a satisfying finish. I give the story a 4/5.

Lastly the CGI. I found the special effects to be spectacular but it did feel a bit lacking compared to other Marvel movies. I give it a 3.5/5 for CGI.

Ratings

Comedy: 5/5

Story: 4/5

CGI: 3.5/5

Overall I give this movie a 4/5 for its great humor, fun storyline and slightly lacking CGI.

Remembering Robin Williams

0

For many of us, Robin Williams was a significant part of our childhood. He made us laugh, cry, dance, jump, goof off and everything else in between. This man inspired true joy. Today, I want to honour the soul that taught me anything and everything about life, by looking back at some of the films that revolutionized our childhoods and beyond.

Hook– Robin Williams irrevocably encompassed the character of a childhood favourite, Peter Pan. At a moment of my life when all I wanted to do was grow up, Mr. Williams taught me to enjoy the precious time of childhood.

Aladdin– Every little girl and boy cannot help but be infatuated with the exotic characters of Aladdin. One of the most memorable characters of course, was Genie, played by Robin Williams. The first time I watched this movie, I became engrossed with Williams’ portrayal and the idea that some wishes can come true.

Jumanji– This was a film that any family could play and it would entertain every demographic. For me, I regarded Jumanji as one of my first “scary movies.” I would howl and cry. But as I got older, I grew to appreciate the nature of storytelling present in the film.

Good Will Hunting– As I reflect upon Good Will Hunting at this present stage of my life, I can truly empathize with the struggles that some of the characters undergo as they try to overcome and embrace young adulthood. This film teaches all of us to simply not be afraid of the human condition. At one or more points in our lives, we will surely all feel helpless and confounded on the method of moving on. Robin Williams truly deserved an Academic Award for bringing this message alive.

In the mourning of Williams’ death, fans left flowers and quotes near the bench, where once a man and a boy sat, trying to make sense of life. The park bench marked one of the most iconic scenes in Good Will Hunting.

This list is only a portion of Williams’ impact in the film industry and our lives. As seen with the park bench, that will forever mark the genius of Robin Williams, Williams created more than films. He created a legacy. Robin Williams has inspired generations and will continue to revolutionize those to come.

Visit the butterflies at the Calgary Zoo

0

IMG_0749

There is a lot to see this summer at the Calgary Zoo. The Calgary Zoo features many animals around the globe both locally and foreign. Even if you have visited the zoo before, it’s definitely worth it to go back again. In this blog, I will show you one of the special features the zoo has offered.

IMG_0692 IMG_0713

Usually you can never miss butterflies in the summer but in Calgary they are hard to find. The Calgary Zoo butterfly garden at the Enmax Conservatory is similar to the tropical rain forest. The zoo imports cocoons from butterfly farms around the world different each week to show the varieties of butterflies.

IMG_0727 IMG_0735 IMG_0745

The cocoon will break daily in the cocoon display and release into the garden around 10:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. As you walk around the garden, not only you will encounter the beautiful butterfly but also different tropical plants; my favourite one is the water lily.

Appreciating being alive

Appreciating being alive

Do you appreciate being alive?

My answer should be yes, but I would be lying to myself if I said I truly appreciated being alive.

I was born and raised in Canada, a place where I have access to many luxuries that other people are deprived of. It is a place where I can walk around without fear of being shot. I don’t have to fight for survival like I would in living in constantly warring nation. I can go to school. I have clean water. I can be who I want to be without fear of discrimination.

I’ll admit, I take these things for granted.

That’s why I want to take some time to reflect on how lucky I am.  There are people out there battling illnesses, suffering abuse, and facing problems that I may never understand. I have no right to complain. My issues pale in comparison to theirs. I shouldn’t complain about what I don’t have, rather I should appreciate the simple joys that I do have.

Tuesdays with Morrie

Learning how to die

Death. We’re all going to die at some point. It’s a natural part of life. It’s something that many of us would rather not think about,  and store in our memory banks for the distant future. However, I read a book called Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom, that changed my perspective on life and death.

Morrie Schwartz suffers from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurological disease that gradually degenerates his muscles, ability to breath, and ultimately ends in death. There is no cure. Despite facing a terminal illness, Morrie has a series of eye-opening revelations about what life is really about:

This is part of what a family is about, not just love. It’s knowing that your family will be there watching out for you. Nothing else will give you that. Not money. Not fame. Not work.”

“Aging is not just decay, you know. It’s growth. It’s more than the negative that you’re going to die, it’s the positive that you understand you’re going to die, and that you live a better life because of it.”

“I give myself a good cry if I need it, but then I concentrate on all good things still in my life.”

Morrie (left), Mitch (right) Source
Morrie (left), Mitch (right) Source

When I heard this, it was surprising. Some people may say that a 16-year-old like myself shouldn’t be thinking of death. Yet, it’s important to realize that when your time is almost up, your priorities shift. It’s less about material wealth and more about the comfort of having someone to talk to. During Morrie’s last few months, he still retained a happy outlook on life. I think that’s something we can all learn from.

Learning how to live

People say that you first have to lose something in order to know how much you miss it. My parents have provided me with all that I need, but perhaps that’s why I can’t truly appreciate life. Honestly, I can watch tragic news stories, but it’s not the same as experiencing it first-hand. I don’t know what it’s like to be desperate. I don’t know what it’s like to be starving. I don’t know what it’s like to be alone.

To know love is to know heartbreak. To know happiness is to know sadness. To know life is to know death.

We can never really know which day is our last. We may think we are invulnerable, but we are so fragile in actuality. It is in this impermanence, that we realize the value of our experiences and our interactions with others. Even when we pass away, our memory will live on in the hearts of those we have touched.

While we are still alive, remember to enjoy the small things. We have so much to be thankful for if we take the time to think about it. Life is beautiful: from watching the sunset paint the sky with a multitude of colors to making someone else feel happy.

I’ll end off with this video:

The Pre-September Jitters

0

Okay guys, let’s talk about the elephant in the room; September ( aka the beginning of school). To some, it is a wondrous month filled with new beginnings and friends, but for others, it’s the most dreaded time of year. Even after going to school for what seems like countless years, this time can unnerve the best of us. Some way or another, we all need tips to get over the nervousness of the new school year!

From http://sullina91.blogspot.ca/2012/09/hello-september.html

1. Get Involved!

One of the most crucial aspects of school life is all the clubs and extracurricular activities offered to us like band, sports, volunteering, etc. To start the year off on a positive note, try going for a new activity you’ve never tried and stick to it, you never know when woodworking or auto might come in handy!

2. TAKE NOTES!

I cannot stress this enough, taking notes is the difference between late night cramming and getting a full night’s sleep before an exam. The most important part of this is to be consistent and remember to this throughout the semester.

3. Relax!

This one may seem a bit odd, especially when you’re in some of your most important academic years, and taking time away to peruse a hobby and have fun is a necessity to keep from ripping your hair out. Trust me.

Hopefully, these tips will save you from restless nights before school starts!

How to handle a break up

I recently went through a breakup with my boyfriend of 5 months. If you are experiencing a breakup, you would understand how hard it is to be happy. But despair no longer, for I am here to give you some tips that helped me through my breakup.

Think it throughtumblr-break-up-quotes-for-girls-1

Think thoroughly, but not obsessively. Although there might not be a good reason for you two to break up, there certainly was one, and probably more than one. If you and your partner wanted different things, it was bound to end anyways; it takes two people to start a relationship, but just one discordant person is enough to end it. Thinking it over will help you prevent making the same mistakes in future relationships.

But never rethink the decision, because the relationship ended for the better. Although there were many good times, it’s the bad times that ended it. Learn from the past, accept the present, look forward to the future.

Alone timeimages

Even if you and your former partner agreed to be friends, it’s best to be away from them for a while. For some people, being alone with their thoughts is the best way to heal. Don’t contact your partner until you are ready to be platonic and can communicate with no ulterior motive (yes, wanting to get back together is an ulterior motive).

Spending time without your ex is a great way to improve yourself; exercise, read, try new things. Take the break up as a chance to be free to do whatever you want and become a more well rounded person!

Out with the old, in with the newlarge

A break up can signify a new beginning. Use this as a fresh start; redecorate, organize, rearrange and renew your personal space. A mess can be overwhelming and depressing and could further your stress. Organizing and cleaning is a great way to get your mind off of your ex.

Be sure to get rid of any reminders and photos of your former significant other. Go through your belongings and find items that remind you of your partner, and throw them away. Ridding yourself of reminders is the best way to get over someone.

images-1Find happiness elsewhere

The key to moving on is realizing you can be happy without your ex. So go out and try some fun things! Hang out with friends, do something adventurous, go outside, start a YouTube channel, start exercising, write a book, volunteer. There are so many possibilities, they’re endless! There are plenty of things that are less stressful than a relationship, that can make you happy.

Stay active

Exercise alleviates depression and stress. It boosts your confidence and it’s good for your well being. I started running when I broke up with my boyfriend, and it helped a lot! I was much more confident and happy about my body (which helped me realize that I could do better than my ex).

In the end, break ups are always hard, and everyone  handles it differently. Just be strong and, in time, you will feel better. Happiness is always right around the corner, so keep your head up. It’s better to have loved and lost, than not have loved at all.

A personal bucket list

0

Sadly we are not going to live forever, I mean nothing is bound to exist forever and neither are we. Humans have a limited time in this world and that my friend is our existence’s bitter truth. And in that limited time we have in this world we get to decide how we spend it. We could choose to waste it and lead a boring and uneventful life, or we can choose to experience life for its beautiful and majestic wonders. I personally prefer the second choice, I want to live life, go on adventures, and have high blood pressure because my heart is always beating twice as fast as the person next to me who doesn’t appreciate the world for what it is.

And before I die I have a bucket list that I must fulfill, things I must experience, adventures I must go on, the hidden surprises of life that I must be able to feel and cherish. Thus I have decided to share with you a few items on my list that may inspire you to also create a bucket list, and truly experience life for its beauty. Pain too, is beautiful darlings.

1) Embark on a humanitarian trip in a developing country. Giving back and helping others gives me a different kind of happiness, it brings me joy and peace. I gain insight and it reminds me to be grateful for the life I have. I would love to help those who aren’t as fortunate as we are in Canada, I would love to change a life, bring a smile to someones face who perhaps has forgotten to, and lessen the burden of poverty from those people that struggle because of it.

yaa

2) Get a script as an actor which has the ability to send a meaningful message out to the viewers along with touching their hearts. I would love to perform a piece of beautiful art that has the ability to make someone want to better their life, make amends for their mistakes, or rekindle lost hope. I would love to play a character that not only teaches me how to live, but inspires others in their everyday lives.

Acting-acting-26598086-1200-954

3) Be madly in love and have my own happily ever after. What girl wouldn’t want to be in love and be loved back? What girl wouldn’t want to be in love with her very own Prince Charming? We all need love in our lives, and I believe if you love someone you should love them with your whole heart and soul.

lo

4) Master contemporary dancing. I’ve always found contemporary dancing beautiful, elegant, and graceful.. all of which I aspire to be. The stories told by contemporary dancing have always touched my soul. Dancing to me has always taken me to a different world, it allows me to be free when I feel like a caged bird. The art of contemporary will perhaps even allow me to show you that through the graceful movements of my body. One day, I aspire to master the art of contemporary dancing.

lose-yourself-in-dance

5) Swim with dolphins. Yes first I would have to learn how to swim, however imagine how wonderful it would be to swim amongst the most beautiful of the marine life. To be aware of every breathe you take and your synchronization with the dolphins. Losing yourself to the rhythm of your strokes, while looking at the majestic beauty and elegance of the dolphin. The ability to be able to live life with ease alike to how they do.

best-swim-with-dolphins-dolphin-cove-jamaica

So that’s it, a few items from my very long yet do able bucket list. Perhaps all of these things may not happen, but it is my responsibility to at very least try, try to make these dreams come true.

“Life is pure adventure and the sooner we realize that, the quicker we will be able to treat life as art.” Maya Angelou

Indulging my tastebuds at LeVilla

0

Sometimes, I just want really good food. Yes, I can go to a chain restaurant and have an enjoyable meal. And yes, my mom isn’t a terrible cook. But I think nearly all of us would not be fulfilled without the occasional culinary splurge.

Special of the day - Steak bites
Special of the day – Steak bites

Even though my latest outing to LeVilla was only my second time there, the restaurant definitely qualifies as a place I would repeatedly go for that culinary indulgence.

There are now two locations, one in the west near the Sunterra in Signal Hill, and one downtown on 4th street. I’ve only been to the west one, but I can say with confidence that any food from LeVilla is worthwhile.

Coquille St-Jacques - Scallops, mushrooms, emmental cheese, white wine cream sauce
Coquille St-Jacques – Scallops, mushrooms, emmental cheese, white wine cream sauce

The food could be terrible and yet LeVilla would still be a nice place, because the a) environment, and b) service, are both top notch. If you’re looking for casual and quick, this is NOT the place to go. But if you’re looking for a classy yet comfortable dinner, this IS the place to go.

Choosing what to eat was like choosing a favourite friend or parent, but then again, all the choices would be good, so… no pressure. I decided on the Stuffed Chicken Breast, wrapped in proscuitto and stuffed with mascarpone and wild mushrooms, which came with potatoes and fresh veggies. As you can see in the picture, the food presentation alone was spectacular. The joy of seeing a plate like that coming to me is one Subway or Boston Pizza will never reach.

Stuffed Chicken Breast - Proscuitto wrapped, stuffed with mascarpone and wild mushrooms
Stuffed Chicken Breast – Proscuitto wrapped, stuffed with mascarpone and wild mushrooms

Veggies have the stereotype of being dislikable. Well these fresh cooked vegetables dare to defy that standard. Sure, the serving wasn’t huge, but there was an array of different veggies, all delicately cooked and then arranged. The chicken was the most desirable combination of moisture, flavour, and texture. The stuffing provided richness and a sharp burst of flavour, while the proscuitto wrapping was slightly chewy but not at all fatty like bacon. If I had to say anything negative, it would be that the potatoes didn’t quite match the perfection of the rest of the meal. However, to sum it up, I’d say this dish was bliss.

Of course, no meal is complete without dessert. Since I was dining with both my parents, we ordered two desserts to share.

Ice cream, gelato, sorbet; they’re all delicious. But the mango sorbet here was in a league of it’s own. Imagine a mango being turned into a creamy form and then chilled. Then there was the chocolate mousse tower. A.k.a. a chocolate shell surrounding decadent yet light Callebaut chocolate mousse, complimented by a flavourful wild berry compote.

I can say without a doubt that I WILL be returning to LeVilla again. Yes, the prices make it more suitable for special occasions or indulgences, but trust me, it’s worth the splurge. The question isn’t if you should go. The question is when you should go.

This Star Won’t Go Out: Celebrating the Life of Esther Earl

0

On August 3rd, the Nerdfighter community celebrates Esther Day. Now you may be thinking, what are “Nerdfighters” and who is Esther and why has she been given a special day? Well have no fear, I will address these questions throughout the blog post.

John Green, the genius behind many novels including The Fault in Ours Stars and Looking For Alaska, started the Nerdfighter community alongside his brother Hank Green a few years back; and has been growing ever since. For those of you who may not know, John and Hank have been, and continue to make, weekly YouTube videos where they discuss matters of the week to each other and whatever else they may have on their mind. Their channel, Vlogbrothers, encourages their viewers to be themselves and embrace their nerdiness; and this is where the term “Nerdfighter” comes in. Nerdfighters are basically fans of not only John and Hank Green, but also of everything geeky, nerdy or sciency. Nerdfighters come together in large groups at conventions such as LeakyCon, and also in smaller groups around their cities.

Esther Earl was a sarcastic, funny, and kind young girl who passed away from cancer in 2010. She was an avid Nerdfighter and met John Green while at a Harry Potter convention and he was deeply inspired by her intelligence and sophisticated thoughts, but also by her humor and silliness, so much so, that the novel the Fault in Our Stars is dedicated to her.  Although there are similarities, the character Hazel Grace and the real life Esther Earl are not at all the same person. Esther Earl had a YouTube channel of her own, and although she would have enjoyed being famous from them, they were more of a diary where she could show her thoughts and feelings to others or share personal messages of inspiration to her viewers; and that’s just what she did. She would often talk about love, but not heart shaped chocolates and teddy bear love, but love that really means something. Love for your family and friends, for  Harry Potter, John Green and the community of Nerdfighters around the world.

Although I did not know Esther Earl personally, after reading the book, This Star Won’t Go Out, which consists of many diary entries Esther wrote in and out of the hospital, I felt a deeper connection than just me reading a young girl’s diary; I felt as if we were friends. Like many other people that read the book, I was inspired by her hope, love and intelligence but really fell in love with her quirkiness and charm. There isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t think of Esther and it really hurts to know that in just one year I will be older than she will ever be; that I will keep growing, as she stays the same. But at the same time I am so happy to have read her story, and to have gotten to know her through John, through her Youtube videos and through her book, and for that I am forever grateful.

Although Esther Day has already passed; I like to think that every day is Esther Day. Please watch this video to find more about Esther Day and what it really means. I love you Esther Earl, R.I.P.

The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict – A Beginner’s Guide

Ever since World War II ended, tensions between the Jewish-majority state of Israel and it’s surrounding Arab neighbors, most namely Palestine, have been high. With both states in a perpetual struggle for land and recognition, the Israeli-Palestinian situation has often been described as the world’s “most intractable conflict”. Now, as ongoing fighting intensifies and the death toll rises, it is becoming increasingly important to understand what is behind all the violence and destruction. Personally, when I become interested in a subject matter, I like to watch YouTube videos about it. So, of course, as soon as I began hearing about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, I headed over to everyone’s favourite video-sharing website. For tough issues like this, however, it often becomes hard to find a video that does not reflect the creator’s personal opinion. Luckily, I was able to find this great little blurb that offers brilliant insight into the conflict, and provides an untainted and unbiased approach by presenting the issue in the points of views of both Israelis and Palestinians. Take less than 15 minutes of your day to watch this video and better understand the world around you.
