Awesome youth in profile: The sportsmanship of Aliya Karmali

0

Untitled-1
Aliya Karmali was the winner of the ConocoPhillips Youth Of Distinction Awards 2014 in the Sportsmanship category.
She is a great athlete, an encouraging coach and a positive role-model to her fellow athletes. With her dynamic attitude, one can easily make out that she is a conqueror! I had an opportunity to interview this young lady and what unfolded during the interview is truly inspiring!

How did you first get into athletics? What sports?
My mom enrolled me in sports at a very young age. I think she decided that for the purpose of teaching me and my two older brothers how to become self-disciplined and eventually learn how to manage our time better to find a healthy balance between academics and athletics. This skill has carried on with me for many years, and I’m very grateful! She put me in a variety of sport including competitive swimming, golf, hockey, soccer, volleyball, etc.

So what attracts you to the world of sports? What keeps you going?
The thrill and adrenaline rush of playing sports definitely attracts me to the world of sports. I am also constantly goal setting for self improvement. Over the years, I have set long term and short term goals for myself. These goals push me to work harder. Whether the goal is to make the race in a certain amount of time, or lift a specific weight by a certain period of time, I am always pushing my self to improve further.

How important is winning? Is it the only thing that matters?
As fun and rewarding winning may be, it is definitely not the only thing that matters. For example, in competitive swimming, when I receive a personal best from a race, my coach tells me, “You just had a great win.” So to answer your question, winning is just as important as self-improvement and perseverance.

Three qualities every sportsman should have?
I think every sportsman should possess determination, self-control, and leadership qualities.

How would you define sportsmanship?
Sportsmanship is having respect for yourself as well as other players. I also think sportsmanship has to do with being a mentor and passing on your skills to others.

You have been a student coach for Dief’s swim team. How was your experience as a student coach? What have you learned from that experience?
I love being a coach! It’s so rewarding for me to pass on the skills and techniques I’ve developed throughout the years. Being a student coach requires a lot of responsibility. I was required to be on deck at 6:30 a.m. from Monday to Friday and plan workouts beforehand. From being a student coach, I learned that people learn differently and have different skill levels and different learning paces that need to be compensated for, so patience is a quality that is strongly needed.
Keiko's 2013-2014 coaches

Speaking about coaching and mentoring, do you have any important figures who have inspired you? Coaches, mentors, etc?
My previous and present coaches are definitely huge role models for me to follow. They have inspired me to take up coaching and mentoring myself. At a young age, my coaches were almost like family to me. They cared about each and every one of their swimmers and pushed them to succeed. Having felt that care and devotion myself, I feel like it’s my obligation to coach other swimmers to give back to my community and thank all my coaches for believing in me and pushing me to work harder.

So from patience to maturity, you have it all! But injuries could be quite disturbing and discouraging to an athlete. How do you cope up with injuries?
I have had many injuries throughout my sports career, one even life threatening. The way I deal with injuries is to not get discouraged, but wait to be fully healed then come back stronger and more determined than previously before. Also, injuries may seem frightening. So when I get injured, I think to myself, “Fear is just another reason to try harder.”

Could you tell us a bit about some major obstacles you face or have faced in your sports life?
I would have to say the blood clot that I was diagnosed with in 2011. I was forced to quit competitive swimming for two years and was on blood thinners for six months. When I returned to swimming, it felt like a foreign concept to me. But with hard work and determination, I worked my way back into it and eventually became a provincial qualifier.

Could you tell me something about your future plans?
In the future, I really just plan to keep on doing what I’m currently doing. I want to keep playing sports, and keep improving. Maybe make it to Nationals, then the Olympics one day! Along with playing, I also would like to continue mentoring and coaching others in sports, because it is something I really enjoy.

Lastly, any advice for the sports newbies?
Keep persevering and stay determined. Always keep a positive mind set. Succeeding in sports is something that not only requires physical ability and preparation but also most importantly requires mental preparation. Go into a goal you’ve set for yourself with motivation and don’t stop training until you feel accomplished. That being said, it’s important to watch your limits and know what your body can handle. But most importantly, have faith in yourself and remember that, “Fear is just another reason to try harder.”

DC vs Marvel: Who will win?

0
The war of our comic-book fantasies has begun! Who will win?
The war of our comic-book fantasies has begun! Who will win?

With the recent release of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, war has been declared on its rival. DC, on the other hand, released the first teaser of much hyped Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice – however, this was shown only at the San Diego Comic Con. But a few fans uploaded cell phone recorded videos of the teaser, and I must agree, the teaser looked FANTASTIC! It took the excitement up a couple of notches, and now I cannot wait till 2016 arrives. In the meanwhile, check out a spoof video created by How It Should Have Ended.

Marvel’s Trump

Marvel’s next major release, Avengers: Age of Ultron, brings back the ensemble cast of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, among many others. The first look seems promising as a war-like situation is depicted with the ultimate villain, Ultron. DC, following Marvel’s footsteps, is looking to establish a Cinematic Universe- a Justice League movie is in the works, set to be released in 2017.

While DC is taking the “slow and steady” route, Marvel plans to release seven movies in the next three years! Talk about fighting fire with fire! Check out IGN to see the exact release dates!

DC: Not too far behind!

Being a DC fan, I’m highly anticipating the release of Dawn of Justice. The casting of Ben Affleck, although much criticized, seems apt to me. Over the past month, many pictures from the sets have been leaked, and Affleck seems to have nailed the role of Bruce Wayne. What remains is to see him in action as the Caped Crusader! Recently, images of Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel were leaked from the sets, and do they look promising! Gal Gadot has been roped in to play the Amazonian warrior princess, Wonder Woman, who looks absolutely astounding and very much like a warrior she is supposed to be! Now that I have evoked DC fans’ imaginations, I shall resume waiting with bated breath, till the day “Dawn of Justice” graces theaters worldwide.

Regardless of who wins, one thing is guaranteed- it will be a treat to superhero and comic book worldwide.

5 things to get excited about in Autumn

0
shout out to my homegirl Marnie!

Hi all! Long time no post (sorry!). But with the looming first day of school right around the corner, I figure I may as well shed some autumnal light over the metaphorical overcast skies that is the back to school season (if that was too poetic for you – or just a straight up bad attempt at being poetic- basically I’m going to rave over my favourite season). For those of you who don’t know, I am a born and raised first-gen Canadian. That means I deal with snow as late as May- or since 2014 seems to be a record breaking year- June. That being said, Autumn is my absolute  favourite season 1. because it’s my birthday and 2. feeling my power rise in tandem with the increase in vampy lipsticks and the inevitable return of Halloweentown. Notice how I bolded “absolute”? That’s because I take my Autumn excitement very seriously. Now without further ado – my list of THINGS YOU GET TO BE AGGRESSIVELY EXCITED ABOUT IN THE COMING FALL.

1. It’s my birthday.

That’s right folks – this gal was a fall baby. Of course I have reason to be excited for fall! Not only do people gather for a day to celebrate the fact that I have survived many years on this planet – they do it with cake.

2. THE TRENDS.

This one I could talk about for ages. The second the first leaf falls off a tree, there is an awakening in every burgeoning soon-to-be fashion icon.  Those pretty and subtle pastels get shoved aside for the attention-demanding confidence inducing colours that makes every girl feel like Natalie Dormer – that is to say, admired from afar with a healthy dose of fear and respect.

3. The drinks.

Ok. You know the one. The highly praised PSL of legend. The legendary drink that binds people all over the world – the Pumpkin Spice Latte. Is it overhyped? Probably. Does that make it taste any less delicious? Absolutely not.

4. The sweaters.

Every year people go on the hunt for that perfect oversized sweater – effortlessly chic and perfectly slouchy. From the fisherman’s sweater to a sleek yet unkempt cable knit – the perfect sweater is out there. Which brings me to my next point –

5. SWEATER PAWS.

Ok, I swear I am not the only one that does this. But (and if you deny this you’re lying) I find a great satisfaction when my sweater sleeves reach that perfect length where they go past my wrist and end right at my knuckles. It’s great for cupping too-hot drinks, and it makes me feel about 20 times better. For me, nothing says autumn like a good sweater that I can tuck my knees into and the adequate sleeve length for sweater paws.

Alright guys. That’s my top 5 – what’s yours?

Awesome youth in profile: the leadership of Amanda Calleberg

0

amanda1

This past week, I had the wonderful opportunity to sit down and chat with Amanda Calleberg, one of the ConocoPhillips Youth of Distinction Awards (YODA) finalists for the leadership category.

ConocoPhillips Youth of Distinction Leadership Award

To be given to a youth who has chosen to take a leadership role in bringing positive change to their school or community. The nominee will have demonstrated responsibility and drive, as well as initiative in starting new projects and programs.

Amanda is a recent graduate from St. Francis High School. She dedicates much of her time helping others succeed. When not working hard at school, she is either performing at Calaway Park, instructing dance, or tutoring her peers in her favourite subjects. A lifelong dancer, she has organized and taught many dances for students from many different backgrounds. Through DanceWorks, Amanda was also able to lead a group of students from her former junior high school perform a hip hop dance at the event.

Speaking to Amanda, I was also amazed at her desire to continue learning and peer tutoring those that need help. She tells me that as a tutor, her job is to give students a new perspective and second opinion to the concepts covered by teachers! It was great speaking to Amanda, and I hope you will find out why she is such an amazing youth below.

amanda3

What do you think it means to be a leader?

I think being a leader means being able to point someone in the right direction, but not necessarily there to tell them what to do or how to get there. Being a leader is to be a friend that’s able to make executive decisions without hesitation. Someone that can just act in a way that intuition tells them, and not be sacred of it; someone who is not afraid to make mistakes.

A leader is also someone who is able to take on new experiences and challenges, and be able to see the potential in someone. For example, if you’re tutoring someone, a leader is going to realize that the student does have all the capability that they can absorb information and maybe it’s just in a different way. A leader is someone who can recognize that and show them the right path to take, even if they haven’t experienced it themselves; someone who can empathize with people instead of sympathizing.

Who or what inspired you to become a leader in your community?

There wasn’t one specific person who I would say inspired me, but rather I think that I tend to feed off the energy of the people around me. My whole school and family have all been very supportive, and I just feel that I’ve been a natural leader my whole life. It is the people that I am leading that really inspire me to keep on going and to take on new projects, because they are the ones that assure me that I can do a great job. The results that I get from my leadership work can really motivate me to keep leading because I like to see my work putting smiles on people’s faces and allowing them to reach their full potential.

amanda5

As a leader, describe the best moment you have had.

One of the best moments I had was when my school did a flash mob during our talent show. This was a dance flash mob that I had been wanting to organize for two years. With the approval of my teachers, I got together a group of people to learn two dances, while keeping it very secretive from those that were not involved.

The flash mob was really nice because many of the people involved didn’t come from dancing backgrounds, they came from every walk of life. Seeing them come together, being united by the dancing and good times, it was great because it showed that you do not need to excel at something to do it in front of a large audience. As long as you are having fun with it, then others will too. As we were performing the dances, the energy and spirit in the whole gym was roaring. That was one of the best moments for me, seeing it all come to play and the final result of my hard work.

What is the biggest obstacle you have faced as a leader?

The biggest obstacle I have faced being a leader would be trying to manage my time and all of my activities. If someone comes up to me and asks me to do a project, I would always say yes. It is rare that I would say no because I would feel that I have missed a great opportunity. I would always go for it. I do not like to delay what can be done today for tomorrow.

As a result, I would jam pack my day full of activities and leadership roles. This can be at times a bit overwhelming, as you do need some down time to yourself. I was able to cope with this because I was used to being very busy. As a child, I was involved in lots of different sports and dancing. Thus, the transition into my leadership roles was not that difficult because I was already accustomed to having many projects going at once, with little downtime to myself.

What would be your advice to up and coming leaders?

My number one advice would be, don’t be afraid, and that could mean many things. For one, it could mean don’t be afraid to go up to someone to suggest a new idea or a new perspective on a problem. It could also mean don’t be afraid to voice a concern or issue that you have thought of in a project.

The youth need to speak up for themselves. I think it is very important that you need to advocate for yourself to the fullest extent that you possibly can, and that you advocate for your friends and family no matter what situation they are in. Never be afraid to try something new and never be afraid to fail. Failure is a big part of life, everyone experiences it. You have to embrace your failures and learn from them: don’t be afraid to open up doors that you don’t know where they will take you.

Taking on new journeys is an important part of life. It will give you valuable experiences that you will grow from for the rest of your life and make you who you are.

What are your future plans or goals?

This September, I will be starting my studies in engineering at the University of Calgary. Eventually, I hope to graduate there with my engineering degree and work as an engineer in the field. Recently, I have also noticed a new interest in the law field, so potentially, going to law school to become a lawyer could be in the works after my engineering degree. In my dancing, I hope to continue to teach dance and to expand the genres of dance that I can teach. I also hope to get certified as a fitness instructor so that I can teach fitness classes in the future. In terms of new hobbies, I have started taking up teaching myself the guitar, which I hope to continue expanding my skills and song repertoire.

amanda4

Anything else you would like to add?

There are a few people that I would really like to thank. First of all, I would like to thank my mother for always pushing me, never giving up on me, and always believing in me. I would like to thank my father for always adding some fun and humour into my life. I would like to thank my sister for teaching me what it means to be family and for teaching me what my priorities should be. I would like to thank all the staff at St. Francis High School for nurturing me to the person that I am for the past three years. I would especially like to thank Mr. Blischak, my Teacher Advisor. He was instrumental in making me the person I am today because he would always believe in me, encouraging and suggesting to me new things that I should do. I am glad that I embraced those suggestions, because they have positively influenced the person I am today!

5 ways to be happier

0

image

1. Begin your day with making someone else happy and drink something warm.

When you feel like sadness is going to engulf you, indulge yourself with a warm cup of tea or coffee. Let the toasty liquid soothe your soul and read a good book. Let out a sigh of relief, knowing that even the saddest moments of your life will come to an end eventually.

tea

2. A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures for everything.

Both will swallow your bitter thoughts of anger when your mind is not thinking rationally. It will fold you in and remind you that although you feel like drowning right now, you’ll be able to swim the twilights when you wake up. You will be awakened by a fresh sunrise when the sky drinks in the sun and coughs up a thousand specks of light. A good laugh will make your stomach ache and bring tears to your eyes, but it will also entangle your thoughts from reality and bury yourself from the brutal honesty of your life. Even if this is just for a little while, you will get a chance to exhale all the hatred and darkness.

3.  Finish your work right away instead of procrastinating because then you will have more time for fun (or do nothing and watch Netflix)

Why are we so unhappy? This is because we’re always stressed with studying, with school and everything just becomes lodged in our throats and minds. We keep everything until the end and that itself becomes a bad habit. The sleep-deprived nights just bring down our moods in general, so get your work done before having fun! 🙂

image (1)

4. Work out. Find time to do it, or make time. The endorphins make you happier!

When you’re sweating and working your heart to it’s limits, everything else seems to slip away. When you don’t feel like talking, and when your thoughts are screaming, it’s okay to be quiet because when you exercise it’s no longer deafening. The endorphins seem to miraculously make you happier as well!

5. Do one thing that you love a day that you aren’t forced to do.

We all carry the weight of being obligated to get things done. Forced to get over with it even if we don’t enjoy it. Well let yourself go and treat yourself to a splurge of happiness. Even if that means losing yourself in a book, sunrise or distant memories. Write poetry, write anything and take in everything around you.

Bonus: Listen to your favourite song! 🙂

Video Of the Day: Cardboard Stories

It is easy for us to think all homeless people are all the same. We make assumptions about the homeless, even though we don’t take the time to get to know who they are, and we easily overlook them. The video above was created by ReThink Homelessness to show us that the homeless people are just like us and they all have their own stories, and to raise awareness for the rising rate of homelessness in America. This video is both beautiful and heartbreaking, I hope you enjoyed it!

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge: Charity Success

0

It’s everywhere. People are pouring buckets of ice water over their heads and posting their reactions on social media. Since its climb to popularity, big names such as Justin Timberlake, Facebook CEO and founder; Mark Zuckerberg, as well as comedian Jimmy Kimmel have braved the cold to complete the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and raise awareness for ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).

For those who aren’t aware, ALS is one of the five (and the most common) motor neuron disease. It kills nerve cells over a period of time, eventually leaving entire muscle groups paralyzed. This fatal disease kills by stopping nerve activity in vital organs and causing the patient to be unable to breathe or swallow. ALS has no known cause or treatment, and there are as many as 3,000 cases of ALS in Canada. Every day, it is estimated that 2-3 Canadians die due to this devastating disease. Luckily, awareness for this issue has recently reached new heights thanks to an interesting campaign kickstarted by the ALS Association.

The idea of pouring a bucket full of freezing water onto oneself for charity may seem ludicrous, but it might be interesting to know that the it’s been around for a while now. The act became associated with ALS when American golfer Chris Kennedy completed the challenge and passed it onto his cousin, whose husband had been diagnosed with the disease. Eventually, others who were suffering from ALS also took the challenge to promote the cause.

Though the official rules of the Ice Bucket Challenge are in dispute due to the several versions that are out there, they usually state that upon being challenged, you must pour a bucket of ice water over your head within 24 hours and/or donate $100 dollars to an ALS-related charity. What started as a typical fundraising campaign quickly garnered the attention of celebrities all around the world. Thus far, it has raised more than $13.3 million dollars for the ALS Association, making it the most successful campaign in the organization’s history.

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

However, with success comes criticism,  and critics are claiming that the challenge is just an online fad that is more of a social activity than a charitable campaign. Despite the claims that the challenge has become a form of ‘slacktivisim’, it is good to consider the fact that it has raised incredible amounts of awareness for ALS. As well, just by comparing how much money was donated during this time last year ($1.7 million) and this year ($13.3 million), it can definitely be said that the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has been a charity success.

Here are a few of my favourite challenges:

#Ferguson; Tracking a tragedy through social media

0

Following the tragic death of Michael Brown, aged 18, social media has been used as a significant medium in order to further shine light on the issue. Currently Ferguson, Missouri is  blanketed with riots and violence as protestors fight for justice for the African-American teenager, whom was revealed to have been shot six times by a white police officer.

Due to the ever-changing nature of the situation in Missouri, resources such as Twitter have been utilized in order to bring news to the masses in an efficient manner. The controversy over the tragedy has managed to attract more eyes to the issue through various social media networks.

Here are some tweets below, updating followers on the status in #Ferguson:

At at time when corporate influences of media are no secret to the public, the people are able to create their own source of news outlet to the world. With real time updates from everyday people at the scene, there is less room for biased information produced by mainstream press. Social media is also allowing more public debate over the controversy. With the use of the world-wide web, people have the ability to call on bigger names in pop culture to take action.

#CopsAreTrash (locoernesto). "I have yet to hear anything about #Ferguson from Miley or Bieber. Katy? Iggy? Everyone wants to be black until it's time to be black." 14 Aug. 2014, 2: 43 a.m. Tweet.

The above tweet, which has been retweeted several thousand times, has insinuated the debate over the role, or lack thereof, of popular figures in the media, who embrace “black culture.” We all listen to their music and watch whatever they are in, these celebrities undoubtedly have some of the most powerful voices today. Miley Cyrus alone has accumulated approximately 18.4 million followers on Twitter.  Yet, some of these celebrities have been reluctant to voice their opinions on the issue in Missouri.

Other pop icons, however, have been using their influence over social media to direct the attentions of their fans to #Ferguson.

Celebrities like Mark Ruffalo, popular for his role as the Hulk in the Avengers, posted this status on Facebook recently, encouraging people to take action to seek #JusticeForMikeBrown.

Social media has revolutionized not only what people talk about, but the community of people who talk about anything and everything. The situation in #Ferguson would not have been as blazoned by onlookers and supporters, if it had not been for the aid of social media. The Internet and social media networks have created a world where conversations cannot be destroyed, a world where conversation becomes encouraged and proves to be significant in the decisions of society’s most powerful players. Nothing and no one can hide.

10 myths about introverts

0

First off, sorry for not posting in literally forever. Summer really has taken a toll on my productivity and available time, but I managed to find something interesting for you all to read about, so I hope you enjoy it! I was recently scrolling through a tumblr blog when I found a post about introverts, as the title of this article says. I myself being an introvert, was immediately interested in what the post had to say, and found its opinions and facts on the reality behind the myths about introverts to be quite relatable. It basically outlines many misconceptions about introverts and then proceeds to debunk them. If you’re an introvert like me, the facts behind this might sound true to you, and even if you are an extrovert, some of the myths here may be things you have thought about people like us. For the most part, this article will be me stating what the post said, and adding my personal opinion afterward. Let’s get started.

(Thoughts in italics)

10 Myths/Facts About Introverts

Myth #1 – Introverts don’t like to talk.
This is not true. Introverts just don’t talk unless they have something to say. They hate small talk. Get an introvert talking about something they are interested in, and they won’t shut up for days.

I’m not the type who likes to talk unless it’s something I’m interested in or passionate about. I won’t be as invested in what you have to say unless I feel the need to. I don’t mean to come off as rude, or unsociable, because I’m not, it’s just that I honestly don’t really feel the need to talk about things I don’t feel concerned towards.

Myth #2 – Introverts are shy.
Shyness has nothing to do with being an introvert. Introverts are not necessarily afraid of people. What they need is a reason to interact. They don’t interact for the sake of interacting. If you want to talk to an introvert, just start talking. Don’t worry about being polite.

I’d have to totally agree with this one. As an introvert, unless you’re my friend or I know you at least mildly well, I won’t really talk to you. I’m a bit awkward that way, but I’m not exactly the best at interacting with others. If you come to me, you might be surprised at how easy it can be to get me to open up a little. This may appear to be in conflict with the first myth, but for me, conversation and the need to have it comes with the situation.

Myth #3 – Introverts are rude.
Introverts often don’t see a reason for beating around the bush with social pleasantries. They want everyone to just be real and honest. Unfortunately, this is not acceptable in most settings, so Introverts can feel a lot of pressure to fit in, which they find exhausting.

Little bit unsure of this one. I definitely don’t think of myself as rude, but I don’t feel the pressure to fit in as much. For me, if I find myself being different from others, I mostly prefer to stay that way. Why give up who I am for the sake of being what I’m not? It’s true that those around me may think of me as strange, but that’s just who I am. I do want the people I surround myself with to be honest about themselves however. It’s one of the qualities I admire in my friends.

Myth #4 – Introverts don’t like people.
On the contrary, Introverts intensely value the few friends they have. They can count their close friends on one hand. If you are lucky enough for an introvert to consider you a friend, you probably have a loyal ally for life. Once you have earned their respect as being a person of substance, you’re in.

To all my friends out there, this applies to you! 🙂 I probably wasn’t the easiest person to get along with or understand at first, I’m sure you remember, but once you became my friends, I turned into the greatest friend you’ve known. (Or maybe weirdest? Introverts can be pretty weird around people they’re comfortable with…)

Myth #5 – Introverts don’t like to go out in public.
Nonsense. Introverts just don’t like to go out in public FOR AS LONG. They also like to avoid the complications that are involved in public activities. They take in data and experiences very quickly, and as a result, don’t need to be there for long to “get it.” They’re ready to go home, recharge, and process it all. In fact, recharging is absolutely crucial for introverts.

I agree with the recharging part, but for me, going out in public is fine. I just dislike crowds of people, so I avoid those.

Myth #6 – Introverts always want to be alone.
Introverts are perfectly comfortable with their own thoughts. They think a lot. They daydream. They like to have problems to work on, puzzles to solve. But they can also get incredibly lonely if they don’t have anyone to share their discoveries with. They crave an authentic and sincere connection with ONE PERSON at a time.

This one is so true. Most of my thoughts and feeling processes are entirely internal. I can daydream and think about numerous things whenever I have my piece of mind, and generally do it alone. I may not show it as much outwardly, but inside my head I am probably thinking of many scenarios and situations about my actions and my life. Most of my thoughts can involve the random-est things, or involve me thinking over my actions and feelings. I don’t tend to share much about what I’m thinking to many people, and usually only ever share (Okay, maybe more like vent) to one person. Of course, I do like being alone sometimes, just because it gives me time to myself.

Myth #7 – Introverts are weird.
Introverts are often individualists. They don’t follow the crowd. They’d prefer to be valued for their novel ways of living. They think for themselves and because of that, they often challenge the norm. They don’t make most decisions based on what is popular or trendy.

Yep. I don’t really care much for what people find popular or trending in the world. If everyone’s doing one thing, I usually am doing something else.  I can go with the flow, but I don’t follow the crowd, I follow wherever I feel life takes me.

Myth #8 – Introverts are aloof nerds.
Introverts are people who primarily look inward, paying close attention to their thoughts and emotions. It’s not that they are incapable of paying attention to what is going on around them, it’s just that their inner world is much more stimulating and rewarding to them.

Ever heard of the saying that the quietest people have the loudest minds? This applies to introverts very well. A lot of the time I can space out and just stare randomly at nothing. I don’t exactly mean to do it, but at those times I just inadvertently shut out the world and venture of into the dreamland that is my thoughts. I’m an analytical type of person, and tend to think about everything excessively. This includes my emotions and anything I ever do. Even if I’m not saying much out loud, I’m saying a lot inside my head.

Myth #9 – Introverts don’t know how to relax and have fun.
Introverts typically relax at home or in nature, not in busy public places. Introverts are not thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies. If there is too much talking and noise going on, they shut down. Their brains are too sensitive to the neurotransmitter called Dopamine. Introverts and extroverts have different dominant neuro-pathways. Just look it up.

I can spend hours walking around in nature, and I have done it before, so yes, I agree with what this is saying. But I don’t mind seeking the occasional thrill. I have to agree with the excessive talking though. Too many people talking tends to make me uncomfortable, and I tend to seek solace by escaping to a quieter place or room if it’s a party. I value silence, and when it is disturbed excessively I find I can’t handle it and retreat elsewhere.

Myth #10 – Introverts can fix themselves and become Extroverts.
Introverts cannot “fix themselves” and deserve respect for their natural temperament and contributions to the human race. In fact, one study (Silverman, 1986) showed that the percentage of introverts increases with IQ.

Introverts, no matter how much they change and grow, I believe at heart will stay as they are. People can grow to be a mix of the two, but I don’t think anyone needs to be fixed. I don’t really know if people actually think that way of introverts, but in any case it certainly  isn’t true.

So there we go. My personal thoughts on the myths and truths behind introverts. Now I want to know what you think. Are you and introvert who feels the same way I do about these things? Or are you and extrovert who can see what I’m trying to say? Are you a bit of both? Let me know in the comments below!

How to thrift shop like a pro

0

I love thrift shopping. It’s super fun and you can find super cool hidden gems for under $5! But sometimes, it’s hard to find good quality clothes that are actually up to date, so I’m going to share some simple tips to help you get the most out of your thrifting experience.

Follow these tips and you'll be better at thrift shopping than Macklemore! Source
Follow these tips and you’ll be better at thrift shopping than Macklemore! Source

1. Set aside time

This is one of the most important tips I could give you, and although it may seem obvious, many people think they can go thrift shopping and only spend half an hour in the store! When you go thrift shopping, I would suggest making a day out of it. Go hit up a few different stores to make sure you aren’t missing out on anything and actually spend time looking. I would suggest spending up to four hours thrift shopping, spending at least one hour in each store you visit.

2. Don’t worry about the labels

Many items in the thrift store  have had their tags worn out or even ripped off, so sometimes they have to sort of estimate the size that the item actually is. Plus, if the item is older, they may have made clothes tighter or looser depending on the style. I never worry about the sizes when I go thrift shopping, if I see something I like, I try it on! I also like to shop in the men’s section sometimes. If I’m looking for an oversize sweater, blazer or a comfy hoodie; I always look in the men’s section first.

3. Don’t be specific

You always find the best items when you aren’t looking for them. For example, the other day I was looking for a sparkly 80s dress for this concert I am going to but instead, I ended up purchasing  a funky men’s blazer! When you go into a thrift store looking for a specific item, you are limiting yourself to so many other cool items out there! It’s better to just enter the store with an open mind so you can be sure to find something different and unique.

4. Don’t get discouraged

You aren’t always going to find something you like, and that’s okay! It’s just like when you go shopping at the mall, sometimes you buy tons of stuff and sometimes you walk away empty handed. There isn’t always going to be cool items at a thrift store, sometimes it’s all junk! That doesn’t mean you suck at thrift shopping, so don’t worry. They usually have new stuff in every few weeks so just try again later!

Depression, explained by a comic

0

Recently, as I was scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed, I came across a page my friend had liked, called Hyperbole and a Half. Out of curiosity, I clicked on it and quickly saw that it was based off a website/blog full of stories told in comic form. I scrolled down the page, and was intrigued by this: Screen Shot 2014-08-13 at 5.41.57 PM     Which led me here. After reading that, I found my way to this. Hyperbole and a Half is one women’s blog. She tells personal stories (with exaggeration, hence “hyperbole”) through comic illustrations. In fact, she’s published a book of her adventures too. Although I haven’t read it YET, my friends have and they are CRAZY about it. In light of recent events, a.k.a. the suicide of Robin Williams, I thought it would be meaningful to give you guys those links. Why? Because those two comic stories are about the author’s journey through depression. All too often, people stigmatize mental illness, or, more commonly, they make assumptions about what it is and isn’t, and what it means to struggle with mental health. Yes, you could read the two comics as something amusing and for light entertainment. But I challenge you to read them to try and learn a thing or two about this serious mental illness that way too many people are facing. I strongly believe that the more open society is about depression and mental health struggles, the easier it will be to avoid results like what happened to Robin Williams.

A lazybum’s bedtime workout

0

Are you too LAZY to go for morning jogs? Is the local gym too FAR? Are the dumbbells and such machinery too EXPENSIVE?
Boy do I have a SOLUTION for you!

What I call the Lazybum’s bedtime workout uses an easy two step principle

Step 1: Assign a key word (or a phrase).

47400

If I tell you to not think about penguins, what do you think about? Penguins. That’s right!

The keyword you decided upon is utilized in a similar manner, where the harder you try to not think about it, the more you do.

It can be as simple as “pillow” or as complicated as “I want mah dream body.”

Step 2: Every time the keyword pops into your head, you are mandated to get up into an upright sitting position.

Feet_off_bed

Let’s say the key-phrase was ‘I am not lazy’. Every time the phrase passes through your mind, you have to get up from your comfy bed into an upright sitting position. The process of getting up does not require one to do perfect push-ups or sit-ups, nor have any consistency in one’s motions.

If you are used to sleeping with your belly facing the ceiling, getting up demands that you use your core, abdominal muscles.

If you are used to sleeping on your side, getting up requires a combination of your triceps and your deltoid (shoulder) muscles.

If you are used to sleeping with your back to the ceiling, getting us involves an investment in your pecs, triceps, deltoids and forearm.

Why it is awesome

insomnia.shutterstock_75546448

The beauty of this workout is that you will be really tired and be able to sleep right away afterwards (or be able to get in a decent amount of exercise thanks to insomnia). By getting some exercise in right before bedtime, you are depleting yourself of the last of your energy, and by exhausting yourself, you will be more susceptible to falling asleep.

The long term effect of this exercise is that you become really good at getting out of bed (and get in some decent upper body workout) or be able to fall asleep really fast, consistently.

Cautions caution

1. Going to bed with an empty stomach AND attempting the bedtime workout will make you extremely hungry. You will end up not being able to sleep or exercise
because your stomach is growling so much. I speak from experience. No lie.

2. If the workout lasts for more than three hours, and you are still unable to sleep. STOP It might just not work for you, and you should try to get some sleep in.

How to tailor this exercise to suit you will be explained in a follow-up post. Stay alert. Get those exercise in.

How to find your perfect nail shape

Nail Shape

{Original Image}

Before you berate me for having such petty First World Problems, I ask that you just hear me out.

For most people, the shape of their nails is not the hot topic of attention on a day-to-day basis. For me, they are the highlight of my insecurities. I’ve always had a habit of biting my nails down to the stub. I’ve tried every method at my disposal: bandaging/taping them up, wearing gloves, painting them, using formulas that taste awful, dipping them in spicy stuff or lemon juice… You get the idea. I know that my nail biting is attributed to stress, and there seems to be more cortisol than blood pumping through my veins. I am also an extreme perfectionist, and having chipped nail polish leads to mental breakdowns. So, I turned to getting my nails professionally done at salons.

But this doesn’t hide the fact that my fingers are still short and stubby. Although I’m a healthy weight, my hands look like they belong to the Pillsbury Dough Boy. Having long nails naturally makes your fingers look longer, but up until recently I didn’t know that there is more to it.

Today, I am going to share with you how to accentuate your hands by simply adjusting how you wear your finger nails. (Boys, feel free to tune into this as well.)

NailShapes

{Original Image}

Firstly, these are the five most common nail shapes: oval, round, almond, squoval, and square. There aren’t many extreme differences between the different shapes, and all can be achieved with a simple nail file. How do you know which shape will flatter you hands the most? Follow this flow chart below.

NailShape_Flowchart_1

{Original Image}

For me, my fingers are short, my nail beds are short and also wide. How can you determine this? You don’t exactly need a ruler, but if you enjoy being very accurate (like me), feel free to pull one out.

Your finger length should be quite obvious, but if you can’t tell, compare your middle finger to your palm. If your finger is shorter than your palm, then you have short fingers. If it is longer than your palm, then you guessed it, you have long fingers.

To determine your nail bed size, look at the distance between your cuticle and where the whites of your nails start showing. There’s no special trick for this one, but you’ll be able to tell by looking. I have included a picture to help you better determine.

long vs short

 {Long vs. Short Nail Beds}

Now, to figure out whether you have wide or narrow nail beds requires measuring again. Measure horizontally across the width of your nail bed, and compare it to the length of your nail bed. I think you guys have figured the next part out already. If the length of your nail bed is greater than the width, you have narrow nail beds. If the length of your nail bed is less than the width, you have wide nail beds.

This concludes how to find your perfect nail shape. But having shapely fingers doesn’t stop here. There are tricks with proportions, such as keeping longer nails if you have shorter fingers and making sure that your nails are longer than they are wide.

Obviously, these things are also a judgement call. If your nails look pretty square, it’s up to you to decide whether you have long or short nail beds. With these tips, it doesn’t mean that you can’t wear your nails a different way. It doesn’t mean your hands will be ugly if you don’t follow the tips listed above. But they will make your hands and fingers look a bit nicer, if you want.

Hopefully this article (and the others embedded into it) helped you out. Nail health is very important and often overlooked, but your nails can actually be one of the first signs of imbalances in your body. Having my nails look good definitely gives me a confidence boost, although it’s understandable that nails aren’t everyone’s first priority.

Lastly, I leave you with “15 Things You Never Knew About Your Nails,” (that you do now) to further your journey to healthy nails!

5 little tips: how to choose a book

0

I’ve always had a trouble deciding on a book at the library and at the bookstore. I can wander for half an hour through the shelves without having made a decision, particularly if I am looking for the one. However, I always keep in mind that there are millions of books in the world, and among those there are thousands of good books and hundreds of the ones. I think reading a variety of books is more important than reading only the best books, particularly because the best books are often the hardest to discover – once you find them, they’re all keepers! Here are five little tips that I use to go book hunting:

Bookmarked book, from [http://cdn.thegadgetflow.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Zipmark-ZIPPER-Bookmark-Book-Page-Holder.jpg]
  1. Decide on a genre, subject, theme, etc: Narrow your search by deciding what you would like to read about so you don’t overwhelm yourself from the start. You can start exploring big names and titles in those categories, and expand your search little by little from there.
  2. Check out book lists, reviews and recommendations: Chances are, you are not the first to have picked up that book. There are tons of book lists that people bookmark and review their favorite books
  3. Don’t judge a book by its cover, but you can judge it by its title: Authors are artists with words, not pictures. They might be able to paint you a picture with beautiful description, but who knows about their ability to squeeze the essence of their novel into an interesting cover. Look at the title, since the style revealed in it is a better description of what the book holds. But always remember, it’s what’s on the inside that counts!
  4. Read the summaries: After taking the book of the shelf, check out the summary to see if the content interests you. Something that I always do is flip the book open to a random page and give it a short read. I like to know the writer’s style before reading the book, since how well the book is written affects how much I would enjoy the book.
  5. Get lots of books: The library is probably the best place for book hunting, because you can borrow many books without worrying about your budget. Not all books are worth keeping, so for those of us that enjoy reading books by the armload, stick to the library first, and the bookstore second. Furthermore, with a larger variety of books, you can widen your horizons about subject matter, and that’s when you can really discover what you like to read best.
