My experience volunteering at Beakerhead 2014

0

Last weekend saw the conclusion of the second year of Beakerhead, an often explosive festival that celebrates art, engineering, and science. I was lucky enough to have had the wonderful opportunity to volunteer through Youth Central at Little Big Street, just one of the several venues that Beakerhead employs to hold its wide array of events.

The first annual Beakerhead event took place in September of last year where 62,500 people sang with Commander Chris Hadfield, climbed a massive spaceship, and sampled specially-engineered foods at eateries all over Calgary, among other things. This year’s exhibitions included a giant cat laser show (sounds awesome, I know), a fully climbable blow-up net, and El Pulpo Mecanico, a robotic two-story octopus. I suppose I should mention that it breathes fire as well. Beakerhead ran from Sept. 10-14 this year, and if you missed it, don’t fret! It will be back in action again in September 2015, and is guaranteed to hold a world of exciting engineering feats. As well, most events are free, and people of all ages are encouraged to come out and interact with the exhibitions.

My day started off at 8:30 a.m., when 10 volunteers, including our team leader, Kirsten, gathered at the entrance of Little Big Street, which was situated on a small portion of the stampede grounds. Since the exhibition did not open to the public until 10 a.m., we assisted with the clean-up of the grounds. It was quite nippy early in the morning, and our first duty was to carry off 20lb sandbags. Though we all had sore arms by the end of it, the task did help warm us up for the day. Plus, I haven’t been to the gym in two weeks…

With a margin of time left to idle before 10 a.m., volunteers were given permission to check out the exhibitions:

This one hurt my eyes to look at, but acted as such a juxtaposition in it’s environment that I also couldn’t keep my eyes off of it. Birthed from a coalition between Plain porjects, Urbanik, and Pike Projects, the HygeeHouse is meant to bring about a warm tone.

Ever dreamt of living in your own house but feared the giant cost? Of course, you could go the normal way and take out a loan, but what if buying a tiny house is the solution? There were two miniature homes at Little Big Street, and this model, The Acorn, happens to be made by Nelson Tiny Homes.

Three U of C environmental design students and Professor Jason Johnson came together after months of planning and a summer’s worth of work to complete this unique meditation hut. I’m pretty sure that in our years of uselessly surfing the web we have all come across photos of “bubble habitats” and subsequently dreamt of being in one. Thanks to Casa Bubble, I was able to live that dream when I stepped into this module.

which we thought was pretty cool, but then… Everyone within the perimeter of the grounds felt an intense radiating burst of heat. When we looked around, we saw this:

For reference purposes, here’s a comparison:

Yeah… pretty intense and VERY cool.

In terms of shifts, the jobs of volunteers were to help man the different tents and stations. The first station me and my partner Amy were assigned to was the Phidgets Sensory Garden. Assembled by U of C students with digital parts created by Phidgets, the “grass” and “flowers” of the garden played music when touched. One of the workers on the project, Kat, explained that there were vibration sensors located underneath the structure, which is thereby wired to a converter that changed the signal into one that a computer can read and play sounds to accordingly.

After a lunch of Asian-style tacos and ice-cream sandwiches, Amy and I were asked to help with the construction of the Spirit Nest. This was such an interesting experience. We got to help Jayson by adding extra branches onto the second floor railings and we were also responsible for crowd-control, as the lineup to enter the hut was ever-growing. They say you learn something new every day…

Day 5 of the construction process: final touches

Volunteering at Beakerhead was unique, fun, and very engaging. Unlike some other events, all volunteers had a task to complete and were able to learn about the exhibitions all at the same time. There were so many opportunities to try new things, and now, I can proudly tell you how a vibration sensor works. On top of everything,  I was able to meet new people and make new friends. If given the chance again, I would no doubt be all-too-eager to jump in. Special thanks to all event coordinators, contributors, volunteers and supporters. The experience of me and so many others would not have been so great if it were not for you all!

5 school hacks to make life simpler

0

It hasn’t even been a month since school started, and I am waiting for summer already.

School life is not easy – you know it, i know it, we all know it.

So, just to make life a little easier, I have compiled five tips to make life go easy on you! 😛

1. Don’t cram!

too much studying

School is stressful, but don’t pull all nighters trying to cram everything all at once.

(I tried it, and failed… miserably)

Instead, study for 35-40 mins, then take a five minute break. Grab a snack, go to the washroom, listen to a song, check your phone, etc. It is that tiny moment of satisfaction that would motivate you to study for the next 35 minutes or so.

(P.S., keep your phone away. I usually keep it under my pillow in an attempt to not look at it. Those addictive devices!)

2. Drink H2O

As soon as you wake up, gulp down a glass of water. Not only would it boost your metabolism, it would help you wake up as well.

If you’re not as lazy as I am, do a five minute workout to increase the effects of your increased metabolism. AND it would help you to start your day on a happier note.

Now that’s what I call multitasking.

3. Keep your alarm clock away from your reach

If there is one thing I absolutely despise, it is my alarm clock (aka, my phone). So to ensure that I wake up and don’t hit “snooze” again and again (and again), I keep it at a distance from my bed, for which I’d have to get up to switch it off.

And, I keep need six alarms to wake up. Every morning.

You’re not alone.

4. Make a homework to-do list

I cannot stress on how important it is for me to organize my homework to not forget something. I usually scribble down a list of things I have to do (on a whiteboard marker) and cross them off as I finish them. It makes life so much easier as I know how much work I have left (and how much I can procrastinate! 😛 ).

Bu seriously, don’t procrastinate.

5. Choose clothes the night before

If you’re like me, and have difficulty waking up in the morning, it is definitely better for you to pick out your clothes the night before. I sleep in very often, and the stress of choosing an outfit spontaneously is too much for me when I’m running late. I cannot tell you how many times I just grabbed anything I could find and ran into the shower because I was late. As difficult as it may seem, it is a lifesaver.

Homemade hair and skin beauty tips

0

*Please note any allergies you have with any of these products!*

Have you tried any store bought beauty products and ended up not having any change, or having an even WORSE change? Here are some homemade beauty hair and skin tips with which you can pamper yourself during the weekends! There are also a few precautions with store bought products.

Beauty products that you MUST be cautious about:

1) Lipsticks, Lip Gloss, and Lip Balms

Lipstick

Lipsticks, lip gloss, and lip balm have been recently discovered with lead in them! This lead is very cancerous and can also harm unborn babies! To check if your lipstick has lead in it or not, dab a little bit of your lipstick onto something made of gold and check if it turns black. If it turns black, then your lipstick does contain lead, and if it doesn’t you can go back to using it again!

2) Foundation

Foundation

Foundation is known to make your skin look smooth and flawless. However, once the foundation’s taken off, nothing is smooth and flawless anymore. Chemicals in the foundation block your skin pores, resulting in a lot of acne that increases the more you use the foundation. So stop using your foundation and start using homemade remedies instead.

Homemade remedies that bring out your natural beauty:

1) Remedy for dry hair

Hair oil

Who has troubles with dry staticky hair? That’s right, I do! My hair is super dry AND frizzy, and it causes a lot of problems for me. However, I started following these steps, and it has helped me quite a lot with my hair. Before you shower, apply a lot of oil to your hair. This leaves your hair silky and shiny after you wash it for at least a week. If your hair is really, really dry, apply a little bit of oil and just a little extra at the ends, to give it a smooth look. This last option might seem really gross, but it does work wonders. Apply plain white yogurt to your hair and wait for it to dry, then go for a shower.

2) Dry Skin

Moisturize me

Dry skin is THE worst and everyone has the problem, whether it be in the summer or winter or even BOTH. It results in white or dark patches and eventually cracking and bleeding of the skin. Moisturize your skin daily using baby oil or vaseline petroleum jelly. These work better than normal lotions and stay on for the whole day. Apply more at night, just before you go to bed, to wake up with glowing skin.

3) Dry Lips

Butter

Dry lips are terrible. They crack all the time and bleed all the time. And what better way to cure them other than using a home remedy? Apply butter instead of lip gloss or lip balm while you’re at home, to make your natural lips look even better than they look like with the artificial beauty products. But feel free to use lipsticks and lip gloss while you’re outside as much as you want to.

4) Dark Patches

Dark patches on the upper lip, under the eyes, and the cheeks look terrible on everybody. The easiest way to get rid of them is applying plain milk yogurt. It whitens the dark patches and brings a glow to your face as well.

Here are your homemade remedies. Let your natural beauty flow and spend lesser time on your makeup while getting ready for school, university, and work.

Tips from high school graduates

0

With all of my friends going to university, or even just starting high school as a freshman, I began to read some tips or tricks to make them more knowledge and experience better. Let’s face it, whenever we finish a grade, we always tell ourselves how we could have improved. For example: we may say that I wish I studied more, stressed less, expanded our social circle, or started joining clubs. However, whatever if may be, we all know that we cannot simply go back in time. But, I’m hoping someone will make a time machine sometime soon *wink* *wink.*

Thus below I added the advice from graduates for you all to read. It covers a bunch of different aspects in regards to education/life in general, and what to watch out for, or consider. Originally, I saw these on Teen Vogue, so check out their post. However, to keep the back to school theme going, I thought it would be great to read what these graduates have to say!

“Patricia G., 23, from Michigan ‘Look at college as a time to develop your interests, or even just figure out what they are. In your first week, you’ll be swarmed with invitations to join clubs on campus—why not explore your options? I really wish I had participated in more activities. The time flies by, so it’s important to take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way!’

Sandra P., 22, from Colorado ‘See your friends as often as you can. I just graduated and came back to my hometown, and I’m shocked how at difficult it is to keep in touch. If you’re lucky, your best friends will be relatively close by, but for most, friends are spread out across the country. It could be months—even years—before you see some of them again, so cherish every moment.’

Michelle B., 23, from Maryland ‘Network early. Once you’re tossed into the job search, you’ll regret not putting yourself out there more. Talk to everyone—it may seem a bit early to be planning for your future, but college ends quickly! Get your ducks in a row now.’

Shannon W., 22, from California ‘If I could do it all over again, I wouldn’t have stressed out as much about picking a major. Trust your gut: Things will eventually fall into place! Even if you feel you made the wrong decision, you can always transfer into a different program. Look at it as an opportunity to grow, rather than an anxiety-ridden situation where there are ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ paths.’

Francine U., 23, from Georgia ‘Remember that your family still exists, and call home at least once a week. For my first few months of college, I felt like I was living in a bubble. I was so self-involved and fixated on my experience that I completely neglected my family. It’s important that you maintain your connection to home—college won’t always be there, but your mom, dad, and siblings will be!’

Sharon D., 23, from Massachusetts ‘If I could redo my college experience, I would have recognized my limits early on. Drinking can be fun, but it can also be foolish, which I learned the hard way. Have a good time, but be aware of your surroundings. Try not to embarrass yourself: You have to see these people for four years, after all!’

Alyssa C., 22, from Ohio ‘If you attend college with friends from your high school, don’t be afraid to branch out. I made this mistake during my freshman year, and it cost me a ton of missed social opportunities. Spread your wings, and make new groups of pals! And yes, participate in all those cheesy ‘get to know you’ games in your dorm. The interaction may be forced, but it will get the conversation flowing.’

Alexandra L., 23, from Wisconsin ‘Three words: Live it up. When my parents droned on and on about the realities of working life and how I should take advantage of my college years, I just rolled my eyes. Looking back, I wish I had been less stressed out about the little things. In the grand scheme, one failed test isn’t going to make or break your college experience. Learn to relax, and enjoy the ride!'”

What does it mean to do something ‘like a girl’?

*NOTE* This is NOT a post directed towards the male population, or to insult the male population. This is just to stop individuals from using “Like A Girl” as an insult!

“What does it mean to do something ‘like a girl’?”

Always #LikeAGirl

This was something that started as an ad as I was trying to listen to some music. I was drawn in instantly when I read that line. Curious, I continued to watch the video. What I saw at first was normal and I did not see any point in the ad. A few teenage girls were called to the stage, and were asked to do a few tasks. But as the video went on, I was surprised by the different reactions from younger girls.

As the question is asked “When did ‘Like A Girl” become an insult? I began to think about the number of times I have heard it being used to embarrass someone. There was the time when I used to watch “Suite Life on Deck,” a comedy TV show that used to air on the Family channel. The video caused me to remember this one scene in the show:

*NOTE* Please forward the clip to 15:20!

Suite Life on Deck

Another type of insult is when people call the easier push ups “girly push-ups”. I really do not understand why throwing limply or doing the easier push-ups has to be described as “girly.” Even girls have started using the phrase in an insulting way, without realizing that they are insulting themselves. Girls can be very athletic and strong as well. No one has to be humiliated by their strength, as everyone is strong in their own way. “Like A Girl” must used and taken as a compliment all the time. It’s time that the world should stop using that phrase an insult and approach it in a new manner.

Three time management tips to keep you on track

0

I attend a self directed high school, and yes it is exactly what it sounds like: I teach myself. Time management plays a big role in how I get to be successful at my school, and I know for a lot of people, planning your time wisely can be tough. Here’s three tips I learned at my school that I would love to pass down to you in order to manage your time in any area you please!

1. Don’t plan too precisely

source
source

If you have your whole year or even the whole month planned out hour by hour, it’s actually a lot harder to get things done and feel god about what you’ve accomplished. Although you want a rough outline of what you want to achieve in a certain timeline, you don’t want to have it planned out too much. If something unexpected might come up, you’ll have no room to make it fit around your plans. Not to mention, if you don’t complete everything you had planed, you will start to beat yourself for it and feel unaccomplished. Try making loose and reasonable goals. When I plan my week at school I try not to set super strict deadlines. Whether it is to complete one unit in math and three in English or to write a test by Tuesday afternoon, I know I can get it done and have space for some free time.

2. Write it down

Believe it or not, but your memory is probably the worst place to store information. Write down your plans by using an agenda or the calendar on your phone, that way when someone asks you about your plans, you can easily tell them right then and there. I personally like using a calendar to write down all of my plans and then only use my phone for really important things such as exams. If I have a class that is at the same time every week, I make sure to write it down on each date of my calendar, not just at the beginning. You’d be surprised to see how easy it is to forget about your weekly music lessons or play rehearsals and schedule something else in for that time!

3. Be realistic

You know there are going to be some days where you just don’t get anything done because you have no energy or motivation, and that’s okay! As long as you can work extra hard to make up what you’ve missed; you will be fine. It is also important to make realistic goals. If you know you are super busy on Tuesdays after school, don’t plan to do three hours of homework that night. You’ll end up stressing yourself out and won’t get anytime to just relax. Everyone works at their own pace, so if someone has accomplished more than you, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re behind. Plan to accomplish something in a time frame that makes sense and works for you and try your hardest to complete the activity that you wanted to do. If you are falling behind in your schedule, try cutting down a few things that you have planned instead of trying to hard to complete everything. We’re only human after all, we can’t do everything!

I hope these tips will be useful for you in all areas that you may need. Feel free to share your time management tips in the comments down below!

Ingredients for a happy life

0

With a busy lifestyle it can be hard to take time in the day to take some happy time. However, we are still always looking to be happier in the everyday things we do. It’s almost impossible to be fully satisfied when there is so much happening everyday and new things are being introduced. Thus we end up realizing sometimes that we are not as happy as we could be. Then again people always say that the best things in life are the small things. I have listed some ways in which you can become happier:

1. GOOD FRIENDS

It’s true that the people you choose to surround yourself with have a large impact on if you are happy or sad. You affect your friends the same way that they affect you. It’s time to say goodbye to the friends who put you down, and make you feel bad all the time. You should be able to sense their vibes, and tell if they are good or bad ones. It is fundamental to have supportive, and understanding friends who have time to help bring you out the dumps with you feel low.

2. HEALTH

Physical, mental, and emotional health is all very important. Thus you should always consider every aspect surrounding your health. It’s true that sometimes we do become preoccupied with other aspects of our health and forget the rest. The mind, body and soul do define who you are as a person and defect on how happy you truly are as well. It’s about feeling comfortable and beautiful in all those parts. It can be overwhelming when are many key components, but it is not difficult for you to consider how to make them reflect more happiness because it begins with you being satisfied with your overall health. You could rest your body by not overworking it, and you could nourish your mind with good books and green tea which is full of antioxidants, and the soul can grow with good company while you travel.

3. ATTITUDE

Attitude towards yourself and others can change significantly deepening on what others are doing, listening to the media, how the weather is, or whatever happened in the past. It is crucial for you to try to see the silver lining in even the worst of times. Humans of New York is an example that has many stories on people who achieved great things from nothing because of their hardworking and determined attitude. Change is inevitable but it is your attitude towards it that counts. When you are cheerful others around you are sure to feel the good vibes as well.

4. FAMILY

Family is an emotional subject in regards to our lives. Also when there is conflict in our family life it for sure without a doubt would affect the other parts of your life as well. If you want to be happy you have to make sure that you are happy with your family so that it doesn’t take a toll on you. You should always try your best to keep things good, but remember that sometimes you can’t fix everything, and that it’s not your fault. Life and family both have the ups and downs. So just let the pieces fall where they do.

5. SELF CONFIDENCE

You should not be putting yourself down. Instead of looking at the bad qualities, look at what you have to offer. It begins with you accepting that you can take on the world. Try to make a list of what your best qualities are because that will make you feel more confident. If you are not completely sure, then ask your friends and family what they like about you. This is also a great way to make you find out what your great strengths you have.

6. FINANCIAL WEALTH

It’s true when people say money can’t buy happiness. If you do find yourself living from the brim of your monthly paycheck, then you do need to decide what your needs and wants are. Spending on wants and not having much money for the needs are the main reason behind unhappiness as it hits you when you do realize this. If the cash still feels to little then try finding a new job, or ask to upgrade to a higher paying position. In addition, there are plenty of opportunities to pick up better paying jobs and extra part time shifts. Becoming financially independent is sure to make you feel a sense of security and pride.

7. LOVE YOURSELF

You can never be happy with yourself if you can’t be happy with yourself. You should never be settling for less, you know what you deserve. However, be happy with what you have as well. Embrace your natural beauty. Also, accepting your flaws is important, as your flaw may be seen as beautiful by someone else. Accept and move on. The faster you let go of your insecurities, and whatever else is holding you back, the sooner your life will glow, become brighter, beautiful, and more happy.

It’s always okay to be sad or mad sometimes. It is a process of life. But, it’s important to also recover from that negativity as soon as possible. Do what it takes to be happy, you have to put yourself before others. You should hold your hand in this world because no one will hold it forever. What are some things you are doing currently to live a happier life?

Simply amazing (Minecraft meets life)

0

I already know what you’re thinking: what sort of important life theme does a game like Minecraft have? You could say that the monsters in Minecraft are like stress: comes in all shapes and have different ways to ruin your day. You could say that Minecraft would be a horrible survival simulator; sure, punch a tree with your fists. You’ll get some wood out of that. Over-complicated thoughts aside, Minecraft and real life share one common reality: there’s so much we can do with what we have, little or not.

In Minecraft, which is available for PC, Mac, current and next generation consoles (except the poor Wii and Wii U), and a pocket edition for iOS and Android, you are dropped in a pixelated world where you literally have the entire world as your sandbox. From the wood from the trees, the sand from the beaches, the dirt from the ground, all the way to the coal, gold, and diamonds hidden underneath the earth, it’s all yours to play with. “Minecraft is a game about breaking and placing blocks. At first, people built structures to protect against nocturnal monsters, but as the game grew players worked together to create wonderful, imaginative things” — description of the game from the official website, https://minecraft.net/.

Love it or hate it, there’s no saying otherwise that you can create something beautiful with just a few blocks in Minecraft. You can make anything! Drop yourself in the monster-ridden surface of Survival Mode and it’s getting dark. The monsters are coming, you need a house to keep yourself safe for the night but you don’t have enough wood for a house with a fireplace. No problem. You can create a house like this to keep yourself safe:

Remember to get IN your house after you’ve built it. Otherwise this will happen…

Poor Steve. An Enderman got him. There goes the diamonds and pork chops.

If you’re feeling a little creative, drop yourself into Creative Mode where you have everything this game can offer you. Wood blocks, sand blocks, iron blocks, it’s all yours. Creativity is boundless and in Minecraft, people have made some AMAZING pieces. For example…

Awesomeness level: 9/10.
Awesomeness level: OH MY DEITY/10.
Awesomeness level: I need a new meter/10. AMAZINGNESS level: I’M IN LOVE/9000.

In real life, you and I have a lot as kids and/or teens. I mean, we have those moments when we’re spoiled and sure, there’s clothes that we can mix and match, toys and games for us to keep us busy, and food and water to keep us going every single day. What if there were others out there who barely had any of that? In Canada, I believe that while we don’t always get what we want because admit it: we have our spoiled moments, we still have a lot going for us in every corner of Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Nova Scotia, and all of the cities in this glorious country. Now take a look at places like China, South America, Africa; places where clothes aren’t in huge variety, toys are limited and food and water is actually becoming scarce. Rare. You think your life is sad because you can’t get those new shoes at the mall or you can’t eat at that restaurant with your friends because you don’t have money? Imagine hiking for your water, waiting for your food, shivering at night with clothes that are barely on. Imagine a life where it isn’t about indulging like how you and I know it now.

I’ll share a story with you, if I may: I was walking home last week from a meeting with my fellow YAA bloggers and there was this homeless man sitting alone in the tunnel, a hat out with nothing more than a lighter in it. Out of wanting to help him, I pulled out my wallet as I was halfway done walking out of the tunnel, pulled out 50 cents, the most change that I had in my wallet, walked back and dropped the two quarters in the man’s hat. He thanked me and we even exchanged a laugh. I felt bad because I only had 50 cents to give and that was all the money I had in my wallet, but ultimately, he still thanked me and asked for nothing more than to enjoy the rest of my day.

Helping is such a great feeling.

My challenge this week for my YAA friends and for you is an easy one: give something away. Dip into your closet and take out some clothes that you don’t wear anymore and give them away to a donation centre near you or somewhere on this map: http://www.donationboxes.ca/alberta/calgary. Participate in your school food drives and charity events because regardless of where it might be going, locally or internationally, you’re going to help somebody. Youth Central is having an Open House on September 23 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. about their various youth programs at their headquarters! Additional details about this Open House can be found here: http://youthcentral.com/youth-central-open-house-2014/. You’re going to not only give up some time to know how to give back, but you’re going to ultimately get one step closer to feeling so good about helping others, it’ll feel like that’s the only thing you’ve ever wanted in your life.

Five musicians for the adventurous palate

0

As an admitted music addict, I spend a good amount of my life searching for songs – new and old – that I might fall in love with. I’ve listened to a huge range of genres, though I think it’s near impossible to find every single nook and cranny where music thrives.

However, in my search to satiate a never relenting hunger for new music, I’ve stumbled upon some hidden gems that you’d be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.

I had the pleasure of hearing these talented musicians perform “Marco Polo” at the 2014 Toronto Buskerfest, and probably would have thrown my entire wallet at them on the spot if my (sensible) parents hadn’t stopped me from doing so, although part of their intervention was probably largely due to the fact that I’d stood there fangirling for so long that we were going to end up missing the subway. But I digress.

The Australia-based Bearded Gypsy Band has a unique sound that’s hard to pin down as a specific genre but lies somewhere in the realm of gypsy, folk, roots, and jazz music. Influenced also by Celtic, blues, and folk music from around the world, the Bearded Gypsy Band cites Andrew Bird and Django Reinhardt as two of their biggest influences. It’s been incredibly difficult to find any other band with a style like theirs, and it’s a fantastic breath of fresh air.

The Korean music industry has grown to worldwide popularity, and in the midst of big-name groups and heavyweight soloists, it’s extremely easy for talented musicians to become a face in the crowd. One such artist is Lim Kim, whose unique voice and vocal control earned her third place in the music competition Superstar K3 alongside bandmate Do Dae-yoon. While winning a number of major awards and charting high with several songs, she remains a member of the lesser known domain of the K-pop world.

I highly recommend listening to “Rain” with English subtitles; I personally connected very deeply to the lyrics as a writer and especially as a young person still in the process of growing up. The beautiful “Without Knowing It All” and addicting “All Right” are other tracks of a repertoire of earworm songs that can be played over and over without growing tiresome.

I’ve been consistently hesitant in getting into heavier music genres, and although The Menzingers certainly aren’t the heaviest the music world offers, their music was toeing the edge of my comfort zone. It was a combination of gut-wrenchingly honest lyrics and a raw connection with listeners that pushed them into the zone of genius rather than becoming categorized as something frightening.

“My Friend Kyle” paints a picture of loss and it, along with the other tracks on The Mezingers’ new album, delivers commentary on deeply relatable topics such as self-conflict and struggle. “Rodent” features a set of beautifully written lyrics (‘I’ve tried running, I’ve tried hiding / I’ve tried everything but dying / Damn the days we took for granted’) and is quite simply goosebump-inducing.

Cole Plante is the youngest artist of these featured five and one of the most popular. His popularity is well-deserved. At the age of 17, he’s one of the rising artists in the Electronic Dance Music (EDM) industry and has worked alongside many of the major players in his field.

In addition to straight up dance tracks like “Forever”, he has also worked on soundtracks for movies such as “REZOLUTION” for TRON: Legacy and songs in partnership with rising vocalists including Ruby O’Dell in “If I Fall”.

I was introduced to Toe by a friend about half a year ago. They epitomize the description of a hidden gem. Formed in 2000, this Japanese math-rock/post-rock/instrumental group has undergone significant change in their sound since conception, though their style continues to be deeply emotional while retaining a consistently minimalistic style. Their drummer is quite possibly one of the post-rock world’s best, and much of the band’s intricate sound is owed to the discipline and acuteness in his playing.

“Metronome” is, while not in any way conventional, one of my favourite tracks by Toe and an eye-opening journey to one of the more unexplored realms of rock music. Other notable tracks include the more melodic “Two Moons” and the intriguing “The Future is Now”.

Carol Rossetti: Empowerment

0

For many years, and even today the word attempts to control women’s bodies. In addition, they have tried to control their identity, and behaviour as well. This type of oppression has become entangled so deeply into our culture that people no longer know that it is even there, or how cruel that can be.

Brazilian artist Carol Rossetti has sent inspiring messages that touch a range of intersectional topics. What she has drawn includes: body image, racism, sexism, and LGBT identity. The characters she talks about are based on her own experiences, friends or family. While there are women drawing inspiration from these wonderful images; there are also woman who are sharing these stories access the internet.

The situations that she portrays are situations that many people have experienced. She beautifully targets important issues, and the way she expresses them are in a way in which global solidarity is clear. Just by looks at the pictures someone can understand the message being applied. Art is something you don’t read. You see, and feel. Right? Above everything, her art is about celebrating yourself. You have to be true to yourself, and don’t let others decide who you are. Her messages also address situations in women’s life around expressions of stigma.

“I can’t change the world by myself,” Rossetti said. “But I’d love to know that my work made people review their privileges and be more open to understanding and respecting one another.””

A bouquet next to the bed

You know that feeling you get when you come home to a bouquet of flowers? Well, this is a similar situation. If you place a fresh bouquet of flowers next to your bed, it can make you feel great. I would say that you should buy fake flowers if you cannot buy fresh flowers, or even a small daisy, because they are sure to make you feel happier. Plus it will make your room look so much cuter.

Enjoy the light

Of course, natural light is a great alarm clock because light waves stimulate you brain, thus you should be leaving the curtains and blinds open to allow all the sunlight to come through. On dark, groggy mornings, you may not feel this way, but at least you will be able to see trees in your yard or the bouquet of flowers of flowers beside your bed. Don’t forget to keep all the windows bare because it is sure to wake you up and out a smile on your face.

Sound a different alarm

It’s a huge struggle waking up in the morning, but when you alarm clock sounds like a fire alarm it’s not the most pleasant. Therefore you should try making a rise and shine playlist that your body and mind will love. I’m sure you can find some playlists on the internet that would help you feel more energized. Your favourite song at the moment can also be a good choice. Or favourite album = instant energy. Escape grogginess.

Drink some water

Water is nature’s gift to the mind because it allows your body to become hydrated after sleeping for many hours. So take out your beloved mug and drink some water. The water helps to increase your metabolism upon waking. The water also increases the amount of oxygen flow in your body, renews energy levels, increases alertness, and stimulates the digestive system. It sound almost like an energy drink, yet it is so simple.

Smell the citrus

In the morning, Tim Horton’s or Starbucks may seem like the ideal scent, but citrus smells are actually more lively. Aromas from organizes, lemons, and grapefruit can be a great energy boost wake-up call. Again, just like water, just having a whiff of this scent can boost your alertness and over all mood. How you can incorporate this into your morning routine is quite simple try a juicy body wash, lotion, face wash, or even an actual citrus fruit for breakfast!

Psych up

Instead of filling up your mind with negative thoughts try to replace them with positive thoughts. Don’t think about what you want to wear by picking it out the night before. Also, don’t dread about a math test by practicing some questions the night before, and quickly review your notes. By getting whatever you can get done the night before it will make the next day 10x easier for you. Also, try to write a list on what you have to do the next day. Envision positive outcomes for the next day is going to out you in a good mood for sure. Lists and goals are what will keep you going.

Why you should try to be in the school play

0

10001117_235419996650364_475038999_o_FotorGrade 10 is scary. You’re thrown into a brand new building, often with over a thousand other hormonal teenagers, and often on your own, with friends going to a different school or maybe hanging out with a different crowd. Like, honestly, who came up with this whole “high school” concept? Who decided that putting kids into a social nightmare sounded like a good idea?

So now the question is… how do we get through these three messy years? For many, including me, the answer is the fine arts. I’d definitely call myself a drama geek. Or a choir nerd. Or whatever other term you wish, because I love performing and I’M PROUD OF IT.

Now, back on topic… I know I’m going to be sure to audition for the school play, but…

Why should you try to be in the school play?

  • To make friends (or at least meet new people) – Yeah, yeah, I know how cliche that sounds, and how tired you are of hearing it. But think about it: what better way to make friends than to be thrown into a group of passionate individuals, all working together on a common goal. And let’s be honest, a high school play includes a LOT of rehearsal time, which means your fellow cast could soon be your second family.
  • To gain self-confidence – Theatre is a foolproof way to loosen up and get comfortable with yourself, your body, and your voice. If you truly invest yourself in theatre, holding back is not an option. And the only way to get into the habit of being self-confident is to practice, practice, practice, and through drama, it’s kinda forced upon you (with all the best intentions).
  • To learn skills – Performance skills, memorization skills, vocal skills, reading skills, the list goes on forever. Particularly, auditioning will give you skills to a) audition in the future, maybe in a more professional environment, and b) rock an interview for a job/university/etc. Basically, there’s nothing to lose and SO much to gain.
  • To be involved – Let’s say you don’t get cast. You still took action to be a member of your school community, and to be a part of what’s going on. If, however, you do get a role, you then get the chance to actively be engaged with the peers, programs, and staff at your school. Plus, when the final performance comes around, you’ll be entertaining and enlightening your school community, which I would say is definitely “getting involved”.
  • Because academics get boring – Yep, I said it. School can be boring as heck, and I don’t know about you, but I’m looking for a way out of that. And performing is a sure way to spice up life a bit. Maybe being in the school play will lower your resentment towards your academic prison 😛
  • To get a picture in the yearbook – For some strange reason, this idea motivates me. Obviously you shouldn’t join a play just for this, but hey, it’s a benefit.
  • Even if you don’t get in, it was an ADVENTURE – As many famous quotes go to say, you won’t regret the things you did do as much as the things you didn’t do. It’s way too easy to go by, day to day, without causing any (positive) commotion. Don’t let your high school life be mediocre or a total bore. So YOLO, seize the day, pounce on opportunities that come your way, even if they don’t result in any achievement.
  • Because DRAMA is FUN
  • Because WHY NOT?

Are you thinking of auditioning? Are you nervous? So am I. So is probably the majority of people considering auditioning. The only solution is to do your best and remember: there’s nothing to lose, but so much to gain. ***EVEN IF you don’t get a role in the play***

Anthony Khem: The power of dance

0

Intervirw with Anthony Khem

17-year-old Anthony Khem found his passion for dance and he’s been pursuing it ever since. This led to the creation of his own YouTube channels where he does dance covers of some of his favorite artists and also some original work. Hailing from Calgary, he moved to Burnaby to train for dance in order to obtain a scholarship from Simon Fraser University. I had the chance to chat with him to see why he dances and where he sees himself in the future.

(All pictures posted with permission from Anthony Khem)

How did you first get involved with dancing?

As soon as I entered junior high, I was surrounded by breakdancers. They inspired me to try it but by the time I was 14, I realized breaking should not be my only dance style. I then went on to explore popping and choreography. Then, in Grade 10, I fell in love with ballet and by last year I furthered my knowledge with jazz, contemporary, krump and dancehall.

Who were some of your role models over the years and how did they inspire you?

Michael Jackson was my first role model because of how fluid his moves were. But by last year Ian Eastwood, Phillip Chbeeb, Dominic Sandoval, Emilio Dosal, Bridget Whitman, Jessica Richens, Tight Eyez, Lady Tight Eyez, Oliver Reyes, Connie Jakab and Nicole Pemberton became my inspirations just because of their drive to dance and their determination.

How do you feel when you dance? Are you trying to convey a story?

Every time I dance it feels like I’m releasing emotion. I strongly think that to be a dancer you must display emotion. I try to story-tell all the time. When I create choreographs, I use the words first before using the beat. You could say I’m a lyrical hip-hop artist.

What are some of the challenges you’ve faced during your dancing career?

Negativity. Those who looked at me and said I couldn’t do it. But in time I realized that’s what made me stronger not only as a dancer but as a person.1450185_10201622622221408_796814744_n

What have been some of your most memorable moments or achievements?

Dancing for the My World Conference in February, dancing for the Cypher Show in June, and being a teacher’s assistant at Decidely Jazz.

Can you tell me more about those three events? What were they about?

The first event was a way to promote that kids can go for their dreams. It was my first gig. The Cypher Show was produced by Mpact about belonging. Every number in the show had a meaning and the one I was in memory of Trayvon Martin. The youth who was shot for no reason by George Zimmerman. The third, I was asked to help teach at Decididly Jazz Danceworks not only to prepare me as a future dance teacher, but to develop my own style of teaching.

As a teacher, what kind of advice do you give to your students?

I would say have fun. Yeah, I am teaching them choreography but I really encourage them to move the way that makes them feel good!

For the people out there who may be hesitant in joining dance, what do you want to tell them?

Take the leap! Risk it because no matter where you are the people who surround you will support you. Family, friends and even other dancers will be there.

You talk about other people being there to support you. How has being in dance bring you closer to people?

If I couldn’t get a move or if other people couldn’t, there has always been people to help. Other dancers, teachers, the support in a dance studio is absolutely wonderful to see.

Besides Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, what other dance studios have you been a part of?

The Forest Lawn High School Studio has been amazing to me. That’s the only other one. But I have been dancing with a group of guys at a place called The Corner in Vancouver, where every Wednesday we meet up and we inspire each other in our own styles.

Besides dancing, what else are you passionate about?

I’d say helping the less fortunate. I tend to give homeless people food and money whenever I can. It just isn’t a sight I like seeing as I have all these things like food, shelter, clothes, and they only have clothes.

Have you thought of combining your love of dance with helping the less fortunate?

Yes I have. I plan of talking with the homeless about their life and I would love to teach them some moves. And also pay for their meals and make their day amazing.

That’s great to hear! Where do you see yourself five years from now?

Five years from now, it’s either a permanent job as a dance instructor or a manager of my own dance studio to help people who can’t afford it. 1511508_10201883084692807_1725231073_n

Are there are any people you would like to thank or anything else you want to add?

I would love to thank Connie Jakab for the opportunities she’s given me. I would love to thank Kelsey Mcmahon, Debra McKenzie and Abigail Skjenna for inspiring me, pushing me, and helping me. If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be dancing right now.

What is your fall nail colour?

0

Summer will be officially over by the end of this week and autumn will be here in the blink of an eye.  Traditionally, autumn is all about browns such as “Scores a goal!” by OPI or the dark sophisticated red such as “dress to kilt” by Essie. But this autumn, why not try something new, something outside of the ordinary?

Don’t be afraid to stand out, choose whatever style that fits for you!

Miss glamorous:

What do women love best of all gems? DIAMONDS! Recently, I found out a line of nail polish designed by OPI that is just super duper gorgeous!  The Designer Series is a limited edition line which is an innovational step in the nail polish industry, created using raw granite granules, giving the nail a sparkle from every angle. In addition, you don’t even have to worry about the granules scraping the nails because the granules are so small, the nail polish will not be abrasive against the nail bed if a layer is base coat is applied. Who doesn’t like shiny nails?

For the autumn season, I recommend the color- DS extravagance (DS026)

Miss chic:

Although the summer dresses and the sandals are going back into the closet, no one says you can’t express your bubbly and cute personality through a glossy coat of nail polish. Go for a spring color this autumn, and match it with your favourite sweater and jeans. For a sweater with a light color such as white or yellow, brush on a nude color (tart deco by Essie) or a super pigmented contrasting shade (style cartel by Essie). For a sweater with a dark color like cobalt blue, brush on colors such as “allure by Essie” or “My Voice Is A Little Norse by OPI”to either contrast or match your fashionable and warm clothing. And don’t forget, the stripes and geometric patterns created using these shades can also add on to the chic-ness!!<3

Personally, I recommend the color “Kiss Me At Midnight by OPI” which is a lustrous blue full of sparkles.

Miss professional:

Have a job where there is always a super strict fashion police? Don’t worry, there are always autumn colors that will match both your “fun” clothes and your “work” clothes perfectly. This season, natural beauty is in style. Even Marc Jacobs sent his models onto the runway with little or no makeup. Following this trend, French manicures on medium length nails will give you a sense sophistication, but it will still be appropriate for whatever you do. Also, remember the pinks and the reds are always in season; even Vera Wang used them for her Fall/Winter 2014-2015 collections.

For a lady with a career, I recommend the midnight french manicure that replaces the normal nude and white with a coat of matte black nail polish and a stripe of silver at the tip.

So, what is YOUR fall colour?

xoxoxo
