I hiked a total of 11 km for some tea, lunch, and pie

0

DSCF1048I agree, Netflix and Tumblr are amazing. But… deep down we know that staying cooped up inside might not be the best way to live. So, I journeyed off to the mountains to have myself an adventure!

Magical, memorable, awe-inspiring Lake Louise is beautiful even just standing outside the Fairmont Chateau, looking out at the lake (or at the hotel). However, if you’re willing to work those leg muscles and get your body moving, a whole new level of wonder can be experienced at the Plain of Six Glaciers Tea House.

5.5 km of scenic terrain brings you back behind the lake DSCF1079and up, up, up. Nestled amidst rock, trees, and glaciers is a quaint tea house. Although they have no electricity at this backcountry restaurant, lunchtime on the weekend (or any day of the summer) brings an overwhelming amount of hungry hikers. DSCF1097
Other than one day at the start of the season where a helicopter hauls in supplies, everything must be carried by the staff to and from the tea house. 5.5 km each way, plus the elevation gain. It’s a miracle that they are still able to serve amazing food. Hummus and chips, quinoa salad, daily soups, sandwiches with the best homemade bread ever (thick, dense, doughy goodness), chocolate cake, pies… Oh, and of course… tea!!! In fact they have quite a diverse selection of unique, local (Banff), loose-leaf teas.

DSCF1119The food is great, but what makes it greatER is the location. High atop a mountain, the view is stunning, the air is crisp, and chances are you’ll get to see some creatures! I was lucky enough to see mountain goats, a porcupine, a pika, an abundance of birds, squirrels, and some VERY friendly chipmunks.

As Autumn falls upon us, the tea house season draws to a close, but if you can’t make it there this year, there’s always next season!

For those wanting a shorter hike with an equally rewarding endpoint, the Lake Agnes Tea House is also accessible from Lake Louise.

Get out there. Enjoy nature. Enjoy food. Enjoy life.

Review: I Love Juicy by LUSH

1

Title

By now, you probably think that I’m being sponsored by LUSH. But, unfortunately, I am not (not yet, that is). They just happen to make extremely amazing products and eat up my paychecks. (Proof of my obsession.) But it’s all worth it. I’ve come a long way from my first review of their face wash Ultrabland. Almost all of my daily care supplies have been replaced by products from LUSH. This store is amazing and they stand for amazing things, plus it’s perfect for all vegan and vegetarian friends. The product that I’m reviewing today is a shampoo called I Love Juicy.

“You don’t have to battle oily locks by washing it excessively. You just need effective, deep cleansing ingredients. Start a love affair with the mighty fruit cocktail of I Love Juicy shampoo. Fresh fruit juices of pineapple, mango and kiwi are slightly acidic and help to mop up excess sebum (oil) produced by the scalp. With sea salt for volume and seaweed extract to soften you’re left with squeaky clean hair and scalp, unbelievable shine and touchably soft tresses. Oily hair? It’s a thing of the past.”

10714592_892253310804481_1778118731_n

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamide MEA, Fragrance, Propylene Glycol, Lemon Oil (Citrus limonum), Fresh Papaya Juice (Carica papaya), Fine Sea Salt (Sodium Chloride), Carrageenan Extract, Sweet Orange Oil (Citrus sinensis), Fresh Pineapple Juice (Ananas comosus), Fresh Kiwi Juice (Actinidia chinensis), Fresh Mango Juice (Mangifera indica),  Citral,   Limonene, Benzyl Alcohol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben

Price: ♔♔♔♔

As with all LUSH products, they are fairly expensive, and although the products are definitely worth their price, it can start to put a hole in your wallet. I got the 250 mL bottle for $19.95 (CAD) before tax. After using it for a couple weeks, I am definitely going to commit to the full 500 mL bottle ($29.95) when I run out. I normally use a ton of shampoo, since my hair has gotten quite long, but I seriously only need about 5 mL of product and it can lather up my entire head. I went in with the mentality of “use sparingly” as it is pretty expensive, but I really don’t even need that much. Since I only wash my hair every two days, this one bottle would probably last me two months.

Smell: ♔♔♔♔♔♔

Yes, I gave it six stars (or crowns, whatever you want to call them) for smell. Why? Because it is the best thing I have smelled in my entire life. This shampoo is so delicious I have to resist eating it. The mix of papaya, mango, pineapple, kiwi, lemon, and everything else just makes this shampoo smell like a tropical heaven. And it makes your hair smell like a tropical heaven too. Even after three days since washing my hair, it still smells fruity and fresh. Honestly, I probably stay in the shower a couple minutes extra lathering up my hair just to smell this shampoo.

10706384_892253317471147_833405405_n

Application: ♔♔♔♔♔

This is as simple as anything can get. I’m sure we all know how to use shampoo (at least I hope so), and this one is no different. The plastic isn’t too stiff so you aren’t struggling to pour the product out as I sometimes find with certain designs of bottles. The packaging is very secure, so if you are taking this with you on vacation, you won’t have to worry about it spilling everywhere. There is nothing about the bottle that makes it superior to others (aside from the fact that it is from 100% recycled materials). But there are no down sides to it either.

Effectiveness: ♔♔♔♔

I didn’t give this one full ratings because it’s a little bit too effective. I find that although it makes my hair very soft and smooth (we are talking about no fly-aways, people), it dries my hair out. Living in Calgary, that’s not ideal since we have a very dry climate. Using their heaviest conditioner, American Cream, I’ve been able to counterbalance the dryness. For those of you who use a regular shampoo you might want to consider using a deep conditioner, even if you have very oily hair. Something that people don’t realize is that oily hair comes from your hair losing moisture, not having too much moisture. (Unless you actually have a condition which directly causes oily hair, in that case don’t listen to me.) Skipping conditioner when you have oily hair is a very common and detrimental mistake.

Overall: ♔♔♔♔♔

Although you may be thinking that I’m smell-biased, I am being 100% honest when I say that this shampoo is the best thing that’s happened to me in this past month. I will be using this shampoo for the rest of my life as far as I see it.

The new era of art

0

“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.”  — Pablo Picasso

In today’s society, art is what adds a bit of spark and personality to our environment. It plays an important role in our daily lives, whether you are admiring the beauty of a building or contemplating how different fonts can affect the general aesthetics of writing. Art is also what defines each age: in the Renaissance it was hip to whip out a paint brush and paint a realistic portrait on a fresh canvas, while in Ancient Egypt they were decorating the desert with pyramids. Each era has its own art… so what is ours? With newly discovered technologies, today’s artists introduce something new to the table of innovations: digital art. With digital art; painters, sketchers, inkers and all venues of artistry are united, all of them using a medium that everyone recognizes as computers, touch-screen tablets, and other devices.

These digital art applications take on any medium, whether it’s coloring, blending or sketching, technology combines these materials into one handy square icon on your touchscreen devices. With the tap of a finger, these applications help open a global community of artists all sharing the passion of creating masterpieces without paper. Such sites and apps include DeviantartDigital Art ServedDrawcastBig Canvas and many more. Digital artists have also brought extreme talent to the world of digital art. For example, Kyle Lambert, an artist who has created the world’s most realistic finger painting on his tablet, has become a celebrity for his skills in digital painting. (Look below for an embedded video of the process of his digital painting)

In the past, fingerpainting was a fun activity for toddlers who were incompetent for drawing realistic masterpieces, but now, digital art allows artists to take fingerpainting to a whole new level, providing zoom for artists to add small detail. It also allows artists to use traditional “pencils,” as styluses act as a substitute for traditional art materials.

Next time, when someone asks “what is our era’s art?” you can confidently say digital art. Next time, when you decide to create an art composition, I implore you to try digital art and see how new technology can help enhance your masterpieces.

Top 5 essentials every high school student needs

1

It’s never too late to reinvent and revamp our attitudes about going back to school, even after it has started! Part of the process is putting together a carefully crafted set of back to school essentials – who else gets insanely psyched when it’s time to shop for school supplies?! Seriously, it’s one of the only things that can get me “in the mood” for school when I’m still busy soaking up the last bits of summer sunshine. Making sure that these five essentials are part of your arsenal is just another simple way of staying on top of things amid the chaos. Trust me, you don’t want to fall into that void… too many times.

#1: A monthly planner

This $14.99 investment will last you the entire school year!

Chapters and Indigo have so many beautiful planners to choose from (yes, even for the boys out there)! We’ve all seen the glorious collection of Kate Spade stationery just begging to be purchased. From my experience, these “view by month” planners are the best, because they allow you to visualize exactly how close your deadlines are. They’re also thinner and lighter than the “view by week” planners, and they use less paper. Most people panic when they can’t find their phone – I’m the one that freaks out when I can’t find my planner.

#2: A good, sturdy backpack

Pick one that reflects your personal style and tastes – stylish backpacks have really made a strong comeback recently, so it shouldn’t be an impossible task. Make sure it is also big enough to fit your BINDERS – those usually take up the most space. It’s best to pick one with multiple layers for better organization. Herschels are made of durable canvas materials, and as a bonus, you can simply toss it in the washing machine if it gets dirty. Jansport backpacks are also known to be quite reliable, plus they come in almost every colour & pattern imaginable.

#3: Earphones or earplugs

The chaos and noise level in the classroom can get out of control sometimes. If you are committed to improving your time efficiency, block out the screeching and yelling with some noise-cancelling earbud action. It’ll be easier to get work done to some music any day. At least you know what you’re listening to and what to expect. On the other hand, if any sound is a distraction, swap the music for some earplugs instead. You can find industrial level noise-cancelling earplugs at hardware stores, sports shops, or even music stores. Home Depot is a good place to start your search.

#4: A water bottle and healthy snacks

Stay hydrated! Getting enough of the blue stuff helps your brain and body function at a higher level. You can avoid missing class for a water fountain break or a vending machine spree. Plus, eating small healthy meals/snacks throughout the day really keeps your metabolism going and going and going. These filter type water bottles are incredibly eco-friendly (made of recycled materials), and you can pretty much fill up anywhere, even from the tap.

As for snacks, try to stay away from frankenfood. If it requires three layers of packaging and half a page to fit the ingredients list… run. Wholesome foods are always the best option – fruits, raw veggies, nuts, yogurt – these are good places to start.

#5: Graphing Calculator & EXTRA BATTERIES

Ah-ha! Bet you didn’t see this one coming did you? But if you’re taking any high school math courses, believe me when I say that this is a basic survival tool. Even if you aren’t using it for the extended functions in your current unit, it’s still a comforting safety blanket to have around. Plus, you can type pickup lines for your friends or practice drawing the back of your teacher’s head using it if you genuinely run out of things to do.

Having extra batteries will also save your life in case it starts powering down in the middle of an exam.

Hopefully these little things will make the school year less of a harrowing task. I didn’t mention it in this post, but the other most important thing you need to have with you at all times is A POSITIVE ATTITUDE! With this not-so-secret weapon you can conquer the world – school should easily be a breeze.

Being a bouncer at a bouncy castle

0

The cynical tone of the essay is intended for a humorous effect; in no way does it reflect the author’s true interpretation on the topic.

www.bounceabout.me.uk
www.bounceabout.me.uk

If you are 80 pounds and under or here to have fun, you are the wrong kind of bouncer. Manning the giant inflatable catastrophe-makers is a taxing task and certainly not for children. A bouncer entails excelling physical aptitudes combined with proper, professional training in order to limit the amount of damage inflicted inevitably onto staff and public; hence with a note of utmost sternness, minimum wage and terrific bruises are at one’s discretion. Renting a bouncy castle is the biggest mistake any host or hostess could have made for their event; and with hope, they did not make the second biggest mistake of hiring an incompetent bouncer.

Safety is the chief concept an employer will expect drilled into their bouncers’ blockheads. Safety is the reason you are paid. The bouncer’s employee contract demands solely for the welfare of the public, and thus nothing else is of more importance. Nothing–not even your employer—needs to be an interference to your precise, critical making of decisions. Despite what your boss claims he know about safety, he knows nothing about safety. The inflatable trampolines will come with white-lettered guides etched onto their rubbery sides. These guides will be the bible you live by–not your employer’s words.

In short, here is the essence of the guidelines:

  1. It takes a lot of paperwork for a child’s concussion, so it is necessary, for each and every adult in line with their children, to point at the white lines of texts and annunciate clearly, “the maximum load being one ton doesn’t mean an adult can jump on it.”
  2. Every bouncer knows the maximum total weight isn’t the maximum weight per customer, so when without a weight meter, it is preferred that he refer to the “Child Capacity” instead, to avoid protests.
  3. Recommended child capacity is not simply “recommended.” The little white number indicates the borderline between an impatient kid and an ambulance call.
  4. Flips, somersaults and belly flops are fun to watch, and broken bones are funny looking.
  5. Hair pins, necklaces, bowties, earrings, nose rings, belly rings, tongue piercings and most other aesthetics are banned. When in doubt, it is safest to have the child enter in her undies.
  6. Funny smelling toddler means hours of wiping poop off the plastic walls.

Injuries are the last thing we want to encounter, but injuries are inevitable. Guaranteed, there will be an average of three crying kids per hour, and so, it is not a bad investment rehearsing first aid. Nevertheless, dealing with injuries is more problematic in the bouncy castles. Young, crying fledglings do not usually consent to a stranger comforting them, nor are they obedient when told to exit the castle. The role of the bouncer here is to shake off his shoes, dive in, and swiftly escort them out to their parents. *Proper escort formality can be referenced from illustrations in Disney fairy tales: it is not the scene where Prince Charming receives the princess from the chariot, but rather, of when the princess loses consciousness and a fire breathing dragon is after them.*Once outside, the wailing and sobbing will act as a perk and speedily attract the child’s parents or guardians.

Sometimes in the worst cases, the parents will already be at the entrance, and are more than eager to substitute you for your job. *That assertive trait you promised your employer during your interview will need to come to place at this instance.* As a bouncer, you will need to outright reject the anxious (obnoxious) adults, and go about your rescue mission. It is after the kid comes out then you reinstate to the parents that adults besides staff are not allowed onto the inflatables. In most cases, the mom will be preoccupied with their winded babe, and the dad will be glaring at you with crossed arms. With sincerity, you will reiterate to him that letting any adults in will only complicate the matter more, and that it becomes difficult persuading the other adults in-line against doing the same. Your level of politeness afterwards will correspond with the size of the dad’s biceps.

Crying kids upset the adults, and upset adults upset the event. Whether it is a celebratory festival or a community party, the employer will not be pleased with any customer complaints. What creates distraught parents second to injuries is not letting their child stay long enough in the inflatables. Timing is a delicate concept. Letting kids stay in too short irritates their parents. Letting kids stay in too long makes the other parents complain about unequal treatment. Combined with cases of injuries, time will indefinitely be neglected during the process of explaining, and the next in-lines will protest indefinitely about the previous batch having too much fun. A timer is recommended to resolve the issue. Watches are second to an alarm app on your phone as the latter can alert you about the change especially during an intense talk-with-the-dad. The interval of play-time should be set accordingly to the length of the waiting line: the longer the line, the longer the playtime. The logic behind this is not flawed. For instance, if a family spent two minutes waiting in line, they ought to settle for a two-minute play-time without dispute. On the other hand, if a family spent an entire afternoon waiting in line, they would have your head once they learn that the time limit is anything less than five minutes.

Once the time limit is up, the real bouncing occurs. You as a bouncer are tasked to have the entire crew exit swiftly and safely. Shockingly, not all children are happy to leave after a two minute frolic. Some cling to the posts; some hide in the corners; some just do not give a bother and continue prancing around like there is not an exasperated teenager at the entrance straining his voice for them to come out. Vocal announcements work for 70 per cent of the kids. Having the parents call on their children works for 20 per cent. As for the last 10 per cent of the little monsters, a bouncer is in need to shake off his shoes, dive in, and escort it out. *The formality of the escort in this occasion will resemble an angry farmer chasing the crows with his broomstick* Again amazingly, 90 per cent of the day’s worth of crying-kids-count credits to bouncing the children out.

www.eatdrinksetx.com
www.eatdrinksetx.com

If the bouncy castle is solely a slide, then the whole time scheme and positioning has to be revised. The length of the waiting line becomes the indication for the number of times a child can travel down the slide. Now obligatory, two instead of one bouncer are required at the inflatable at all times. A bouncer will be stationed at the top of the slide to ‘encourage’ the reluctant few, and a bouncer will be readied to escort the inept climbers up the ladder. Injuries and exits are slightly easier to handle as the child will conveniently slide down and out of the castle. Nevertheless, the injuries frequent to be more severe and the veins pulse more visible on the parent’s forehead.

Bouncing is most difficult when the castle is scheduled to be taken down, and it is particularly taxing explaining to the next family in line that they will not be able to play on the castle. Needless to say, relenting to the pleads of those kids will only get the next family’s hopes (indignation) up in vain. It is exceedingly advised to have your supervisor and/or two other bouncers present in this difficult time of the day. No advice can be given for a solo take-down.

Giant inflatable bouncy castles are the biggest mistake any festival can have. An inept bouncer only increases the amount of damage it will induce. Once more—I reiterate—if you are deficient in physical aptitude, wanting in proper, professional training, and expecting fun, you are the wrong kind of bouncer. Exercise your discretion and let a veteran take your place.

What YAA loves about fall: Scented candles

1

Title

As a teenage girl with the attention span of a 5-year-old, I am easily distracted by anything that moves, is shiny, or smells good. Thus, Bath and Body Works happily drains my wallet. Although I am not that fond of their lotions or soaps, every candle line they come out with consistently makes me swoon.

There is nothing like a good candle to get you into the mood for any season. Having a warm, flickering glow dance in your peripheral vision makes that long-abandoned novel (or homework assignment) seem so much more inviting. The scent of mint invokes in me a feeling of rejuvenation for those days when I want to pamper myself, while sweet and fruity aromas get me pumped up and into a working spirit. By this point, you might think that I have developed some sort of strange, worrying connection with scents – which is understandable. But all you fellow candle-lovers definitely know what I’m getting at.

The BBW candles I like best are the mason jar ones; the three-wick candles are a bit too large, but the candle-to-price ratio of the smaller ones aren’t worth it. Today, I am going to share with you three of my newest favourite finds (although, only one of which is actually from a fall-inspired collection). It is hard to convey a scent to someone, as everyone does interpret smell very differently, but I will try my best to describe these lovely candles to you.

Pumpkin Café – Pumpkin Pecan Waffles

10681908_884035541626258_547845941_n

Before you get out your pitch forks and torches, hear me out when I say that I do not like pumpkins. Sure, they are fun to carve or smash, but the taste and texture of pumpkin just sets me on edge. Despite that, this candle is my favourite pick from the three. There’s only a slight hint of pumpkin, although you can still detect it – for those of you pumpkin lovers. The sweetness is so warm that I wish I could wake up to this smell every morning. Sometimes I am almost tempted to take a big bite out of this candle because it really makes me crave a warm, decadent dessert. If you are trying to read, or treating yourself to some tea and cake, this candle provides the ambiance for the perfect mixture of work and play.

Fresh Picked – Eucalyptus Mint

10647625_884035531626259_660330677_n

I love everything that has to do with mint: mint gum, candies, air fresheners, ice cream, candles, you name it. This candle has greatly helped with clearing up my blocked sinuses or just giving me an energy boost on days when I felt lethargic or sickly. The scent can be a bit overwhelming if you’re too close to the candle and can even sting you nose a little bit if you’re around it for too long. I recommend putting this candle at a distance and just letting it freshen up a room. I burned through this candle in about a week, and I am considering going out and repurchasing it.

Fresh Picked – Harvest Peaches

10615765_884035494959596_1510612434_n

This one would have to be my least favourite out of the three, but it sill smells quite nice. I have come to know that just because I like the taste of something, it does not mean the smell would be equally as pleasant. For example, I can’t really imagine what a mashed potatoes candle would smell like. Nonetheless, this candle does smell fresh but a bit too artificially sweet, something I find unappealing in fruity scents. If left with the lid open and unlit, it can freshen up a room.

So go out and find your own bliss in a fall-inspired candle. Feel free to share your favourites with me as well!

HeForShe: Emma Watson’s moving UN speech

0

The event that has been creating waves in the media is Emma Watson’s speech to initiate the HeForShe campaign for gender equality. The UN Goodwill Ambassador received a standing ovation for the address inviting men and boys to join the movement.

Here is a link to the powerful speech.

A feminist is anyone who recognizes the equality and full humanity of women and men.”
― Gloria Steinem

EllenPageQuote1200-1024x1024

Gender inequality affects not only women, but men as well. We have the keys to open these shackles, but refuse to do so in our ignorance.

For a really, really long time, women have been held back. Their opinions, suggestions, ideas have been suppressed, in fear of unleashing their full potential. Emma Watson raised her voice at such, in addition to mentioning how men and women were conformed to rigid structures of behavior, demeanor and appearance.

Should we let such lowly thinking govern our lives?

I fully support her in her endeavors. Feminism is not about hating men, it is the struggle to bring the problems of women into spotlight in order for measures to be taken to fix them.

We all need to emerge from the cage we have created for ourselves. Once we step out, we will realize how confined we had been. Let us learn to be as free as birds, and soar the heights of life, without fear. It will seem difficult at first- walking through an untrodden path on a foggy day, destination unknown. There would be many storms lying in your path, ready to wreak havoc.  Every time you fall, get up. Dust yourself off, and start again.  This reminds me of a beautiful quote-

“Why do we fall, sir? So we can learn to pick ourselves up”(Batman Begins)

new-feminism

Ladies, let’s stand up for our rights. It has been a tedious walk, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. With every step we take, we are closer to our goal than we were yesterday.

Men, support the women in your life.  They may be your mothers, sisters, friends, colleagues, neighbours, or any woman on the street. Let’s become partners, stand shoulder to shoulder, and face this predicament together.

Emma’s Campaign, HeForShe, has gained massive support from celebrities including Tom Hiddleston and Harry Styles, among many.

Emma, thank you so much for having such an unbiased approach towards this issue. I salute you. #HeForShe

Here is a song to inspire you lovely individuals out there 🙂

YAA Vegges Out: You’re a vegetarian?

0

First of all, I want to put out there that being a vegetarian is not for everyone. I understand that and am in no way forcing anybody stop consuming meat. Leading this diet was a personal choice based on various personal decisions.

So how’d you become a vegetarian?

9aefbf010edcae7ef383b1ff1ae02a6b45b6a708d827af0d94d2fac17928c6aa
Remember this episode? It was a good episode. I swear this is how my mum saw me.

I’ve been a solid vegetarian for about three years, but getting to the point at which I am now was not easy in the beginning. For me, the difficulties were not in cutting meat out of my life, but the acceptance of my parents. My conversion to a vegetarian diet was gradual.

First, I had to make sure I had good reasons for doing this. I wasn’t doing it because it was a fad, like my parents thought. I did it to help me live a healthier life, have an animal-friendly dinner-plate, and to be more content with what I was putting into my body. If you would like to read up on more good reasons as to why someone would want to become a vegetarian, reference 49 Reasons. This is decision that you need to make and you need to be comfortable with.

Second thing on my way to becoming a vegetarian was research. I needed solid proof to present to my parents that what I was going to do was not harmful to me. I did the research; my problem was actually presenting it well enough to convince them. In the end it took the word of a nutritionist to have them to begin to accept my decision. With research came the different foods that can substitute the needed nutrients that meat used to regularly provide me.

Third thing was progressive abstinence from meat itself. I began with gradually reducing the amount of red meat that I ate. For a period of time, the only meat that I would eat was from fish and chicken. After a while I stopped eating that too. It was tricky to convince my mum that I didn’t want to eat fish. She’d proclaim that she’d met plenty of “vegetarians” who ate fish. People who do not eat any meat other than fish, are not vegetarians. They are called pescatarian. My personal goal and my decision was to be a vegetarian. Meaning that I do not eat the flesh of the animal but I do eat/drink dairy products and eat eggs. If you want to learn more about some of the more common “nontraditional” diets people have check out this Top 7 list.

When people choose to get into cannablism, that's where it get's rather weird..
When people choose to get into cannibalism, that’s where it gets rather weird…

One of the most frequently asked questions I get once people find out I’m a vegetarian is:

Don’t you miss eating meat?

My answer is always no. I never really liked meat so it wasn’t hard to quit eating it. The road someone could take if they don’t want to be a vegetarian, would like to maintain meat in their diet, but cares about the treatment of animals is to only buy products from “humane” sources (farms which are improved in animal treatment compared to factory slaughterhouses). What I don’t miss is the meat, what I do miss is the ability to be able to go to any restaurant and have a wide variety of choices. Sure my choices are limited and there’s no fast food restaurants based solely on a meat-free diet (if you know of one in Calgary, please do tell) but I am happy with the choice that I have made.

Being a vegetarian is something you have to decide on. It’s a commitment to yourself. You could always try it out with a couple of recipes here and there, maybe one a week. Have fun and experiment with the things you can make in your kitchen. For me it was a natural step to take. Do what works for you and make sure you’re always getting the nutrients you need to be healthy. Don’t slack off and let your health deplete.

There are plenty of cool vegetarian oriented websites that help you with recipes that provide you with what you need. One you could definitely check out is vegetarian.about.com. From what I’ve seen they have great content. Most of the food that I make are from recipes that I’ve created. That’s one thing that I really like that came out of this experience; vegetarianism has encouraged me to play chef and have fun with cooking.

Five tips for a stress-free start to school

0

You’ve met your teachers, found your classes, and finally memorized your locker combination. The back-to-school advertisements have started to disappear and the ring of the starting gun has long since faded. Now that the school year has started to progress, some students may be finding it difficult to maintain the same diligence and organization of their work, especially if they’re entering into a new school, or high school. With more rigorous courses, higher expectations and new environments, it may become increasingly difficult to maintain the same academic and studious zeal every student starts off with. Having had personal experience in this situation, I can assure each and every frazzled student that it’s completely normal to slip up a little in your work when you’re equally worried about making friends, finding classrooms, being on time, getting enough sleep, and any extracurriculars you may be involved in. While at some points in the mid-to early school year you might find it difficult to keep your head above the water, I’ve put together some of the things that really helped me stay afloat.

1. Avoid separate subject binders

Some people might agree that having at least four designated binders per subject is easiest to stay organized, I’d have to disagree. Although its a very definitive and clear way to keep notes separate, it’s definitely a lot to worry about, and a lot more to carry. Sometimes, you’ll find its better to compromise unconditionally separate notes for a lower stress level, a lighter bag, and a little less confusion. One large, zip-up, three ring binder is probably a better alternative, with dividers and labels clearly marking the end of one subject and the start of another. In this case, you might even want to use journals or notebooks to keep handwritten information instead of loose leaf. Definitely avoid loose leaf if possible. If you have a laptop and you are allowed to use it in class, I highly recommend it for organizational purposes, but it’s hardly necessary.

2. Carry a pencil case

Have you ever had someone in one of your classes that’s always asking to borrow a pencil? Even worse, have you ever been that person? Writing utensils are hard to keep track of sometimes, and its good to have a few extra, and to have them somewhere accessible but protected. A pencil case is great for this because you can keep anything you need; pencils, pens, highlighters, white-out, erasers, calculators, geometry set, and more without taking up too much space, and never having to worry where anything is. Personally, I can say that a pencil case is a staple to any back-to-school shopping list, and it might help a little more than you expect.

3. Develop realistic goals: KNOW YOUR LIMITS

Often when people are feeling stressed, they’ll want to stop any bad habits from developing, and replace them with good habits. This is a great mindset, but definitely easier said than done. Don’t think that reading the entire textbook in one night is going to make you a better student. More likely than not, the higher the goals, the more pressure to excel there is. It’s good to have that motivation, but not if you’re finding the class difficult to begin with. As a student, its your responsibility to know your limits, and set goals within them. Once those goals are achieved, set your standards a little higher. Remember, it doesn’t matter what you get as long as you get better.

4. Write everything, summarize later

Yes, it might be a hassle, but its better without question to have an abundance of over-detailed notes than to have a few pages of basic ones. The more resources you have, the better. If your teacher isn’t writing notes on the board, take the initiative to do it yourself! Chances are, those extra notes are just another helping hand when you’re studying. Don’t worry about writing too much, or writing things down that seem unimportant, because you can always re-evaluate your notes later. This tip might work best if you tend to write on a laptop, but even though re-writing your notes in jot points might seem like a lot of work, it’ll actually help you process the information better

5. Review Periodically

See those mid-unit review questions in your textbooks? Use em’! Take advantage of the material your teacher doesn’t give you in class, chances are it’ll be really helpful and you might even find some of it on the test. There’s always extra practice or additional resources available to you, eg. asking your teachers, cumulative review questions in your textbook, and online information, but its up to you to find it. Even reading through your notes from last week or a couple pages of the textbook is great, because it consolidates that information you’ve spent time writing and summarizing. In the car on the way home from dance, or soccer, or karate? Pull out your social studies textbook and review your vocabulary, or take out your science book and learn a little more about Ernest Rutherford’s gold foil experiment. Just a little at a time is all you need to foster the knowledge you’ve already learned in class. Ultimately you have to remember that at any point in the school year, things can get a little rougher, the road can feel a little longer, but you just need to keep reminding yourself of where you are, and where you want to go. Hopefully these tips can be of some kind of help to you, and you can adopt these skills for the long run.

Mesh networks: Changing things on a startlingly global scale

In the midst of pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, a new mode of wireless communication is rising to prominence. Mesh networks, “off-the-grid” communication systems that don’t require cellular or Internet connections, have become the go-to for the hundreds of thousands of students participating in the recent rallies. Within the most popular existing network arrangements, there are evident drawbacks. The star arrangement and bus configuration, the most commonplace arrangements, are dependent on a singular hub to which many nodes – or rather, users – are connected to. These hub-centered configurations, while generally reliable, are prone to cutting off a node if a link is broken. A mesh network bypasses this risk of isolation, as each node is connected to at least two other nodes, to which more nodes are connected. It can be compared to the Internet, a cloud-style network in which all signals are interconnected in a plethora of possible combinations. The need for a designated router – and the risks of being disconnected from it – is eliminated; each node acts as a router for all the others it’s connected to. A mesh network is basically a giant, self-healing network of interconnected nodes that don’t need a central hub.

In March, Open Garden released an app called FireChat, which enables customers to open their own mesh network with other users. Its developers are calling for a “new era of open communications” and advocate for “freedom to access of information.” FireChat reportedly had 100,000 new downloads in the Hong Kong region between Sunday and Monday mornings following a tweet by student leader Joshua Wong. He encouraged his fellow students to download the app, citing as reasons the possibility of a government shutdown of cellular service and the sluggishness of networks due to increased activity.

Kate Knibbs on Gizmodo explains why this app has risen to such popularity in demonstrations:

“… there’s no easy way for a government to shut them down. They can’t just block cell reception or a site address. Mesh networks are like Voldemort after he split his soul into horcruxes (only not evil). Destroying one part won’t kill it unless you destroy each point of access; someone would have to turn off Bluetooth on every phone using FireChat to completely break the connection. This hard-to-break connection isn’t super important for casual chats, but during tense political showdowns, it could be a lifeline.”

Already, FireChat has been turned to in tense times, being a central element of communications in Taiwan protests earlier this year, and for Iraqis as their government limit connectivity in an attempt to restrain radical group ISIS. While it’s one of the first forays into the market for the general public however, FireChat isn’t the first of mesh networks to prove to be hugely beneficial. Mesh networks have been used often in large gatherings where Ethernet connections aren’t available, such as music festivals. During Hurricane Katrina, the downtown surveillance mesh network proved to be resilient, being the only communication system that remained operational during the storm. Escalating questioning in the realm of open communication and freedom of online expression have nudged mesh networks into beginning to surface from the underground. And with it, the first steps to unregulated, futuristic digital communications are fast approaching.

The Ultimate Guide to Jazz Music

0

Most teenagers would never consider jazz music to be anything special, in fact the majority of people our age wouldn’t even consider listening to it for leisure. But I’m here to open your eyes, and ears, to the wonderful world of jazz music. This blog post will have a little bit of the history of jazz music, some cool facts and even a few classic songs to help you start your journey into jazz music.

I used to be really close minded when it came to music, I hated classical and would never give pop a chance; I would simply stick to what I liked and not consider anything else. I wanted to play drums for my school band but my only option was for jazz, and as a strict indie rocker, I was not looking forward to it. But when I heard all of the amazing music that I know get the pleasure of playing, i can’t stop listening to jazz music. The amount of talent and skill that goes into these songs is impressive and most of the tunes are actually quite groovy.

10 Classic Songs to Help you Get Started

Connections to Jazz

Now if you listened to some the songs above, you probably recognized a few choruses and lyrics and here’s why:

Kanye West has been known to use jazz music as an inspiration for his songs. For example, Jay Z created a song called “Otis” in tribute to the king of soul himself Otis Redding and used his song “Try a Little Tenderness” as the starting point. You probably recognized the chorus of “I’ve got a Woman” from Kanye’s famous”Gold Digger” song featuring Jamie Foxx.

The songs “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” first became popular when Nirvana covered it on MTV’s Unplugged. It wasn’t until later on that the original version by Leadbelly started to get noticed.

Quick History

Like most music, Jazz originated in Africa, but didn’t fully form until the 1800’s all the way up until the late 50’s during the slavery periods in the United States. The African American slaves would often sings songs throughout their days to get through the harsh and rigorous work they had to do. The white slave owners were intrigued with the music and eventually picked up on it as well. This was really where the genre began and grew in popularity. Jazz is truly an all-American type of music that is the base of most modern genres we have today. Jazz music is all bout copying and mixing together different beats and melodies. It is very much an eclectic form of music and that tradition has influenced many other genre’s to mix and match different elements of jazz into their songs as well.

Hopefully after reading this article, you have found a new appreciation for Jazz music and have found it as interesting as I do. Make sure to let me know if you enjoyed this article because I would be more than happy to make an “Ultimate Guide” to any other music genre you would like to see!

Taking a closer look at the New Central Library

0

As a frequent library-goer and, admittedly, not the hugest fan of the currently existing Central Library, I’ve been looking forward to the grand new reveal of the New Central Library’s design for a long time. It was announced a few months ago that the esteemed Norwegian architectural firm Snøhetta had been hired to put together the new design, and since then many Calgarians have been anxiously speculating what they would come up with.

On September 23rd, the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation released their final architectural plans in the form of a “virtual tour” — a 3D animation of the upcoming facility which you can check out by clicking on the link below.

Final Design Details – Calgary’s New Central Library

However, despite the snazzy background music and stunning renderings of the library’s place relative to other buildings downtown, this video fell a little short for me. I was still a little unsure how this ambitious and world-class new design would be “re-energizing the city centre” and “providing a heart to [Calgary’s] new densification”, to quote an earlier release video’s interview with design consultant Craig Dykers.

After scouring a few articles around the web and the CPL, CMLC, and Snøhetta websites, I think I can offer a pretty simple breakdown of how the new library has been designed to be a vibrant, new public space for Calgarians. Let’s just say I’ve been entirely won over.

max_9ba3160a509a6c2fcfee54baeccb3b46

The library will feature a “terraced topography”: basically, it will be built up and around the currently existing LRT/ctrain line.

max_3c803b91e7e5eaa1617c49a3ac655153

All those huge, crazy hexagonal windows have a purpose: the entire library will be awash with natural light and will feature a sky-lit atrium. This will create an uplifting atmosphere for all library-goers and simultaneously reduce the amount of energy spent on lighting.

max_cae768ef925032a8334fc7e8df628273

The layout of the library has been designed as a spectrum: the more engaging public programs and activities will be located on floors closer to the ground, and quiet, individual study space and book stacks will remain on the top two floors.

max_7d3923b05167029be74450f7586ed1e8

Snøhetta was thinking outside of the box – er, library: meticulous planning was given to the plaza around the library as well, including how to seamlessly connect the library’s entrances and the surrounding streets. More than ever, this library will be a place for Calgarians to come together, and the array of green spaces, benches, and bike racks will encourage just that.

max_cdd3ec3934b3be162293e88ce9fbb5b7

Flood precautionary measures have been thought through: after the disastrous effects of the 2013 flood at the old central library, “The [new] library will be built well above the flood plain with no basement,” says Rob Adamson of Dialog, the project’s local architectural partner.

Personally, I can’t wait to see this library vision start to come to life downtown. According to Snøhetta’s official website, “the encapsulation of the existing Light Trail Train is currently underway, and the new Calgary Public Library is expected to be completed in 2018.”

What YAA Loves About Fall: Reminiscing About The Summer

0

Now that we’ve had a few weeks to settle back into the routine of getting up, going to school and doing it all over again the next day, we kind of need a bit of a pick-me-up, now don’t we? This time of year is perfect for revisiting fond memories of he summer that lead us here in the first place.

In a sense, this is a bit of a lead-up to the Thanksgiving season, because we’re stopping to think about the good things that occurred in our lives over the course of the beautiful, school-free months we call summer. It’s really nice to just stop for a minute, no matter how you’re feeling, what your day’s been like, to reminisce about the summer and all the happy things that came along with it and to be thankful that they happened, even if they did have to end.

VacationI hate to put it this way, but taking a minute to think about summer and all of the fun we’ve had and great memories we made helps also sort of helps us put them behind us, helping us to focus on the task at hand: school. Think about it; if we keep ignoring that little voice in our heads telling us to just stop what we’re doing an go do something that’s actually kinda fun, we’re eventually going to go insane. Or maybe that’s just me. In my life, I need to take time to relive the good moments, because otherwise I’m never going to accomplish anything because of that nagging temptation to put my work to the side even when I know that I really shouldn’t.

So just take a minute to think back on the summer! Fall would not be what it is if it weren’t for summer coming before, would it? Not only will it help you to have a sometimes rare happy moment, but it can also help you to move on and put your focus into what needs to be done instead of getting sidetracked by inconsequential thoughts. Have an amazing autumn, everyone.

Simple keyboard shortcuts everyone should know

0
virtual-keyboard
Snapkeys beta keyboard @ mashable.com

Have you ever watched a person spending a ridiculous length of time dragging their mouse over a wall of text (it takes multiple tries!), right-clicking, copying it, navigating through their open program windows, and navigating through a multitude of Chrome tabs only to realize that they’ve accidentally closed the tab they needed? Then they’ll proceed to search through her browser history (after spending five minutes navigating to their browser history) for the tab they closed, and half an hour later, they successfully right-clicks and pastes the wall of text into her online word processor.

If you are this person, or if you know somebody who is this person, fear not. Keyboard shortcuts are here to help. Here are a few essential shortcuts that will help you cut down on wasted time.

Task switcher: alt+tab / ⌘+tab
This shortcut will save you a lot of trouble trying to navigate through your windows, especially if you have a lot of them open at the same time and a small display. It rotates through all the top-level windows of the programs you have running, in order of most recent activity.

Copy, cut and paste: ctrl+c, ctrl+x, and ctrl+v / ⌘+c, ⌘+x, and ⌘+v
Bread and butter stuff right here. I’ve already used this combination several times in the course of writing this article (and I’m only on the second shortcut). This is pretty straight-forward and fairly commonly-used, but for those unfortunate souls who’ve been suffering at the hands of the right-click… Here you go.

Find and replace: ctrl+f and ctrl+h / ⌘+f and ⌘+h
Ctrl+f is absolutely fabulous when you’re trying to look for a certain phrase or section of a really, really long document, online or offline. If you’ve discovered that you’ve made the same silly mistake throughout an entire document, ctrl+h is your shortcut.

Undo and redo: ctrl+z and ctrl+y / ⌘+z and ⌘+y
I found these two indispensable photoshopping and doing digital art. You’ll find a multitude of ways to make use of these if you make any mistakes at all.

Select all: ctrl+a / ⌘+a
It physically pains me to see people manually trying to select huge sections of text, especially when this one makes it so easy.

Bold, italics, and underline: ctrl+b, ctrl+i, and ctrl+u / ⌘+b, ⌘+i, and ⌘+u
Another great set of useful, very spammable shortcuts that I don’t see a lot of people making use of.

These sets are just a few of the basic keyboard shortcuts you’ll find yourself using in everyday tasks, but there are literally hundreds more out there. Go ahead and mess around a bit! You’ll be surprised by the awesome stuff you’ll find.
