What makes you beautiful?

In my teenage years I have wondered, “What is ‘beauty’? Do I fit into the ‘category’ of beautiful people?”

Over the years, this is what many magazine covers have featured: women dressed in skimpy clothes, showing off toned bodies and perfect, blemish-free skin. Over and over again, this notion of beauty is being thrown at us.

Being a teenager in this era, the definition of beauty has become a very rigid structure, which many women try to conform to. However, many fail, and induce harm upon themselves in the process of attaining that polished image we look up to.

Initially hesitant to believe all that I had been told about, I did a little snooping on my own, but the results shocked me.

Before you read any further, I want you to ponder upon YOUR definition of beauty.

What have we come to? Has a term as meaningful as “beauty” become so vague that we search for it on the surface of others? Would that really change who they are within?

We have been brainwashed to believe that a thigh gap, collarbones and a flat stomach are more important than being healthy.

Time and time again, I come across teenagers who try to shed pounds. When asked why, it is because they want to “look good.” We work out five times a day, every week. We take diet pills, and the only thing we lose is our self esteem. Our large sizes embarrass us, so we try to fit into the smaller sizes. We envy the petite women, often wishing to have their body instead of ours. We try all types of things to feel beautiful; we put on tonnes of makeup, we buy new outfits, we try to keep up with trends, but at the end of the day, a tear-streaked face accompanies us to sleep.

Be the change

My dear reader, I’ll just say it. You are absolutely beautiful. Whether you believe it or not, that person looking back at you from the mirror as dreams, aspirations and hopes. You have hopes, aspirations and dreams, and you are not afraid to achieve them. You have people who love you for who you are and wish to spend time with you. So instead of hating on yourself, spend time with those amazing people. In their little ways, they will teach you to embrace yourself, flaws and all. One day, you’ll look back at your past with a smile on your face. Till that day arrives, hang on. I love you, and always will.

Although this post seems to be directed towards women, I want to let all men know that you guys are absolutely beautiful too. You don’t need chiseled bodies and drop dead gorgeous looks to feel beautiful. Because you are, and you always will be.

Tips for dealing with stress

I feel like once winter starts to come around, everyone starts to get a little stressed. In school, midterms are either completed or on their way, and then suddenly after Christmas break, finals roll around. Mixed with holiday get togethers and preparation, the next few months are some of the most stressful in the year for many people. Here I’ve compiled a list of things to do when your feeling stressed, or simply tired and need to relax a bit.

Exercise:  “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy.” Elle Woods (from the film Legally Blonde) was right! Exercise is good for both stress and anger as the endorphins (chemicals your body releases during exercise) diminish the perception of pain, triggering a positive feeling in the body. They also act as sedatives.

Music: It has a unique link to our emotions (as we all interpret it differently, particularly in meaning) so can be a very  effective stress management tool. Slower music is especially effective. This type of music can have a beneficial effect on your body, slowing the pulse and heart rate, lowering blood pressure, and decreasing the levels of stress hormones. As it also absorbs our attention, it acts as a distraction at the same time. For others like me, it might help you focus.

Yoga: Yoga has many benefits; including decreased stress and tension, increased strength and balance, increased flexibility, and lowered blood pressure. Yoga is so good for you! Meditation and breathing exercise help to focus your thoughts and relieve stress, plus the poses are increase your flexibility. Another great thing about yoga is that it requires little to no equipment, and not a large amount of space, so it can be done relativity anywhere.

Reading: If you’re enjoying whatever book you’re reading, you become absorbed in it. The story distracts and takes you away from your own problems and stress for awhile, and it’s nice to not have to think about yourself and your own life for a bit. It also relaxes your body by lowering your heart rate and easing the tension in your muscles. The best part about it is that it can be done anywhere! You can bring a book around with you read, read with an e-reader, or download one of many apps to your phone or tablet with books as well.

Writing, painting, drawing, playing an instrument, singing, etc: Whatever your talent is/whatever you love to do, do it! Not only will it distract you from what’s going on in your life for awhile, but you’ll also have alot of fun doing it. Things like writing or painting can be therapeutic and a great way to get out your feelings in a safe way.

We can’t avoid stress in our lives, but when things get a little difficult we can find ways to allow ourselves to take a break. I hope you guys find this list helpful and try some of the tips!

The Shakespeare Company Presents

To be, or not to be?

As a beginner in Shakespearean plays, I watched Hamlet for the first time at my school. True, we read A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Grade 8, Romeo and Juliet in Grade 9, and currently, Macbeth. But I’ve never gotten the honor of watching a full length Hamlet. In fact, I’ve never watched a full length Shakespeare play.

That is not to say I did not watch Shakespeare plays at all. Each year, my school hosts a Theatre Calgary production. These productions are school-friendly; each play is only 45 minutes to an hour long. Surprisingly, within this short period of time, four actors and actresses in total put on an adaptation of a Shakespeare play.

The specific Hamlet production I had the honor of watching was 47 minutes long. I had not read the play beforehand, but later, I found out that there was a subtext (the war), a crucial scene (the gravedigger scene), which serves as comical relief, and characters missing. Even without parts of the actual play, though, I was able to enjoy and understand.

Shakespeare is seen frequently through eyes filled with fear. However, The Shakespeare Company’s adaptation made Shakespeare more approachable, less time consuming. I, for one, really liked the performance.

Calgary Zoolights 2014

Zoolights is finally here. Starting from Friday, Nov. 21 and going until Jan. 3, 2015, Calgary will enjoy the beauty of Zoolights. There over 15 millions lights at the Calgary Zoo and over 15 millions reasons to visit. This year, they have a brand new ice skating rink, and skate rentals are free. Have your friends or family with you for Calgary’s favourite holiday tradition.

On a dark winter night, come and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate with your friends, family or date while walking through the Zoo grounds. You will forget the stress of the day and enjoy the moment of peace and happyness with the person you care about.

This year the zoo has raised their general admission to $14 for ages 16+ and $11 for children. It was due to many of new programs that the zoo staff have planed for the entire year, like the new skating rink, Santas Oasis, Singing Tree, Wishing Tree and many more.

There are many more to explore. So come and find out yourself. Remember, dress warm, and there will be no admission after 8:30 pm. There will also be $5 parking. Also, the Calgary Zoo is looking for choirs from different schools to perfrom at the Singing Tree. If interested, please find more information at the Calgary Zoo website. Strongly encourage people to buy tickets online so you can get through the line quickly.

Classical Superstar: Joshua Bell

On Thursday, Oct. 30, I attended a concert featuring Joshua Bell, a famous professional violinist, playing Violin Concerto No. 1 by Max Bruch. This piece is played widely among classical music students. (In fact, my own sister has been playing this piece for a while, so it has been cutting through my ears lately). No one wants to hear an overplayed piece in a concert featuring a world-renowned professional violinist, right?

Here, I was wrong.

It turns out, a lot of people wanted to hear him; the tickets were almost sold out by the time I tried to get myself one.

To be completely honest, even though I am a classical cellist myself, I tend to fall asleep in concerts, no matter how well known the guest artist is. My cello friends always laugh at me for it, but in the darkness in the audience with the sound of string instruments droning on slowly and continuously, I can’t help but fall asleep.

Joshua Bell was different, though. From the beginning to the end, I was alert and interacting with the music. Afterwards, I gave him the title: God of Violin.

Don’t push away classical music. It’s not just boring slow stuff.

Holt Renfrew: Lock into Paris Fashion Show in support of the CPO

Parisians have always been known for being at the top of the ladder which is haute couture. This past Friday, Hui Wen and I had the opportunity to attend an exclusive Holt Renfrew fashion show at the Devonian Gardens. The theme was “Lock into Paris,” alluding to the famous bridge where lovers go to place “love locks” as a sign of their undying devotion. Since I (and many others alike) will always hold fashion close to my heart, I felt that this theme was appropriate. There was a fun photo booth, with locks and keys on a chain-linked fence as a backdrop to match the theme.

The entire night felt pretty surreal to me as everyone in attendance had this air of sophistication, and to be honest it was a bit intimidating. This was my first time going to a fashion show, and it actually surprised me how short the actual fashion portion of it was. Most of the night consisted of mingling and ended with an auction.

Today, I am going to be focussing mostly on the outfits pieced together by Brenna Hardy and Phaedra Godchild. All of the looks featured include brands you can find at Holt Renfrew, and are not what you would expect from a typical fashion show. Initially, I was expecting suits of tin foil and giant laser hats, but I was quite glad that my expectations were not met. The outfits were toned down, so that you could actually wear these styles on a daily basis, but still unique and fashionable.

I was not able to get a picture of all the outfits as some turned out blurry or I omitted some pictures as they were not good shots. I also apologize for the giant light in the background if it makes some of the photos hard to see. Here are some of the ensembles I was able to snap quality pictures of:

As you can see, many outfits exhibit a high-end-business feel, and others were downright pajama-worthy casual. The stylists and hair dressers did an amazing job making the models look amazing. I had a good time listening to the quartet from the CPO play, as well as enjoying the food samples. The auctions held throughout the night managed to raise a lot of money for the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra; again, you can read all about the CPO and food portions of the night in Hui Wen’s blog. Now, since Holt Renfrew carries very expensive designer labels, I am not suggesting that you go out and try to buy these exact outfits from their outlets. The entire night was in support of the CPO, which I do suggest that you support! Our generation has been accused of not caring about classical music, and I think us youth need to change that. The CPO makes it so easy with their cpossibilities program; if you are between the ages of 14 and 29, you have the opportunity to get tickets for just $15! Go check out the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra’s website for more information.

(Note: I did a sweep, and there seems to only be one brand that is sold at Holt Renfrew which has a history of animal cruelty. The brand is called Canada Goose, and in 2012 there were demonstrations outside a Holt Renfrew store to protest this brand which sells down-filled jackets with fur hoods. The company is said to use wolf fur, but claims that the fur is obtained ethically. If you attempt to Google “Canada Goose animal cruelty,” all the webpages–except for the one I linked–take you back to Canada Goose’s website. I’m not entirely sure if anything has changed since that 2012 article, but Holt Renfrew does in fact still carry this brand. If you do decide to shop at Holt Renfrew, I would advise staying away from Canada Goose.)

Just a batch of cookies (Go your own whey #2)

Continuing with my new miniseries, I present to you…

Week 2: Cookies!

Because cookies are such a staple in my dessert life, I wanted to find a recipe that I really liked that integrated whey protein when I stumbled upon this little gem. Now, I can promise you that although my attempt at these cookies didn’t quite turn out perfectly, I still really like the recipe and I recommend it and would definitely make it again.

The baking process

A really cool thing about this recipe is that everything goes into the same bowl, which is not only more convenient, but makes for less clean-up. All I really did was mix all of the ingredients into a big bowl, in the order given in the recipe. I didn’t have enough cereal for the recipe, so I added some extra oatmeal to try to balance it out. That’s where I think I went wrong. Even though I added more oatmeal, the dough was still too thin and I didn’t realize it until I started putting it onto my baking sheets. A few minutes after I put then into the oven, they started to get wider and wider. Instead of having a nice batch of smaller cookies, I ended I up with an odd batch of massive cookies which grew to an impressive size. They also ended up all stuck together, so I had to cut them apart with a spatula, which greatly diminished their aesthetic appeal.

My initial reaction to these cookies was that they were a bit dry and spongy, but that was more than likely due to my errors. They also weren’t overly sweet, but the cranberries made up for that a little bit. I didn’t have any chocolate around at the time, so I didn’t drizzle anything on top. Despite the fact that they didn’t turn out quite as planned, I really liked them! A few days after I initially baked them, I decided to try to have them for breakfast. I put them in the microwave for 40 seconds and put maple syrup on them. I must say, it was a successful experiment. Best 1-minute breakfast ever.

Conclusions

Even though my poor cookies didn’t exactly work out the way they should have, I know what mistakes I made and how to correct them the next time I make them. They’re really tasty and I would definitely recommend them to anyone who wants a cookie that’s not only delicious, but packed with protein.

The Highwood: A dining experience like no other

MeMany people have dreamt of  becoming a chef, and many people are waiters/waitresses at some point in their life. At The Highwood, you get to experience post-secondary students learning to be cooks or servers in a fine-dining situation. The students of the SAIT Professional Cooking, Hospitality Management, and Baking and Pastry Artist courses take you on a very special experience.

During the week, they serve lunch, including a buffet on Thursday. From Monday to Thursday, a five-course dinner can be enjoyed. And trust me, you will enjoy it.

tableThe servers are students, which means they are in the process of learning. Sometimes that means funny things will happen. That could mean they take a while to clear your bread and butter (the bread is phenomenal, FYI), that they talk really quietly, or maybe that they’re kind of awkward when setting your food down, but really, it just makes the whole thing a more unique and enjoyable experience. Plus, you’re helping them learn. 🙂 In fact, you’ll probably learn things too! It’s not very common these days to have more than one fork, but when feasting on the five-course dinner, you’ll go through five, all arranged in the right formation (after all, the students are led by people who know what they’re doing). During my experience, the head of the hospitality students came around, and it was really cool to gain some insight and discuss what was going on around us.chefs

Now, the food. If you like plain-old meat and potatoes, stay home. Everything here is gourmet. Be prepared to try something new and probably something you don’t know how to pronounce. For each course, you are given options to choose from, but they all share one thing in common: you can’t find anything like it at McDonalds or Swiss Chalet. Yes, it is students who are preparing the meal, but trust me, that’s not noticeable. The food itself is delicious, and the presentation of it is just as exquisite.

So, what did I eat?

To start I had the “Carrot Tasting:” a carrot parfait (essentially a carrot mousse, which I’ll be honest, was too strange for me), pickled carrots, and roasted carrot chip things, plus edible soil (not sure what it was made of). My favourite part was definitely the chips, which were roasted to perfection. And hey, chips that are healthy but taste even better? soupSounds good to me!

Next came Japanese-Style Minestrone Soup. The presentation of it intrigued me, because they gave me a bowl with vegetables, and then poured in the broth from what looked like a tea pot. I’m actually quite a vegetable fan, so I ate those up with pleasure.

saladThe third course was a salad, which for me was a Tomato Salad: arugula and frisee, goat cheese cream, and balsamic pearls. I didn’t eat the balsamic pearls, but otherwise it was a wonderful salad (especially the goat cheese cream!).

For my main course I had Sous-Vide Cornish Hen, which came with some
vegetables as well as barley risotto. The risotto had Foie Gras mixed in, so like it or not, I ate duck/goose liver! I love poultry and I love risotto, so the dish fit me perfectly.entree

And the best part of any meal, dessert! The feature of my dessert was Coconut Crème Brûlée, but it also came with a mango salsa with key lime meringue kisses, and some sort of frozen ice cream-like dessert with a chocolate base. Every part of that dessert was like heaven in my mouth. Each element was unique, and each offered a different quality: rich, creamy, fruity, refreshing, cold, yum.

dessertMy parents have gone to the Highwood multiple times in the past, and now that I’m of an age where I appreciate such an exquisite dining experience, I sure hope I can go again! I highly suggest you check it out 🙂

Naruto-that is my ninja way

Naruto, as many of you may know, is one of most famous Japanese manga and animated shows. It was first published in 1999 and ended on Nov. 10, 2014 (manga). Naruto grew up with us through our childhood. I remember when anime was super popular in the early 2000s. Many kids who had a superhero dream, now had a ninja dream.

I bet most of you get so emotional that you cry when you watch one of the characters die. Somehow, we can relate to the loneliness of Naruto’s childhood. The way how he prank to get other’s attention and coming home alone with no one. The way that Naruto make us feel was unique, even though he acts stupid sometimes.

As Naruto grow older, so do we. We love how mature he has become and how he comes and saves the day, even though I don’t like how Naruto’s character changes as he grew older. He was the person who has tears, laugh, passion and fear but now he just the righteous person who will save the Ninja world war.

The final ending of Naruto has been released (manga) but the animation will continue for a while.  I don’t read manga (sorry), so I will have to wait until the animation of Naruto is over.

I know most of you will imagine what will happen if this happens. Thus, Naruto is not over. Open your imagination and start a new story line for your Naruto.

Naruto has taught us many lessons. It will always be in our memory.

Even if it is a couple of days past Remembrance Day, there was never a rule that said we still couldn’t remember the brave men and women that fought for this country after Remembrance Day. Their battles, their sacrifices, it continues long past this day, and as the children that your father, mother, and their parents before them have fought for, it would do them a lot if we always kept their noble honours with us today, tomorrow, and forever. I was going through my playlist for a song worth honoring these brave soldiers, and I was fortunate enough to find one. Instead of the humour and jokes I usually deliver in my posts, this will be a nice change-up as I present The Call from Regina Spektor as my song to honor Canada’s heroes of the past, present and future. Take a listen to the original one by Regina Spektor and check out the cover of this beautiful song covered by the Poppy Girls and remember this: there is such a thing as a hero. They do exist. They join their brothers and sisters to defend this country. They join other heroes to protect you.

iOS vs. Android

A few weeks ago, I did a post on Apple vs. Samsung so I thought it would be fitting to cover iOS vs. Android, as it relates closely to my last post.

iOS:

I find that iOS is preferred amongst an older age group. The reason for this is that it’s easy to use, simple, and while it may not have the capabilities or the ability to do everything that Android can do, it still gets the job done, whether that being texting or calling. The simplistic function of being able to download apps and then just having to tap their icon on the screen makes iOS easy to use. You can also easily transition to iOS if you were previously using a phone with a different operating system. One major downside is that if you want iOS, you have to get an Apple gadget, which puts a huge restriction on your options when choosing what phone to get. iPhones are really expensive, and many people don’t see the point in getting a new one each time Apple releases a new model.

 

Android:

Personally, I find Android better, and the primary reason for that is that you can do a lot more with it. In iOS, you are limited to what is available on the App Store, while in Android there is a lot more possibility. However, this also comes with a lot of complexity. Many people, especially those who are older and may not be so familiar with today’s modern technology, feel that the difficulty faced when using Android makes them lean towards iOS (because of it’s easy use) and the fact that they don’t need to utilize the majority of the features in iOS. The devices that utilize Android are also built to be able to utilize and take advantage of all the factors and capabilities. Furthermore, since a lot of different types of phones which utilize Android, you have a wide variety of options to choose from. This is especially important if you don’t want to spend a few hundred dollars on a phone.

DIY: Melted snowman cookies

There are snowman cookies being sold everywhere, but who says we can’t make them special and unique? The cookies are super tasty and a tonne of fun to make. So instead of sitting  in front of a TV with chips, growing fatter and fatter by the minute, get active! You can try this recipe with either friends or family, making use of a warm winter night.

To make to the gingerbread cookies from scratch:

Ingredients: (makes two dozen)

2 and 1/4 cups of all purpose flour                                3/4 cups of softened margarine

2 teaspoons of ground ginger                                          1 cup of white sugar

1 teaspoon of baking soda                                                1 egg

3/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon                                 1 tablespoon of water

1/2 teaspoon of ground cloves                                         1/4 cup of molasses

2 tablespoons of brown sugar                                          1/4 teaspoon of salt

To-Do:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Sift the flour, ginger, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, and salt in a large bowl. Set aside.
  2. In another large bowl, mix together the softened (microwaved 15 seconds) margarine and 1 cup sugar and beat until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, then stir in the water and molasses. Gradually add in and stir the sifted ingredients into the molasses mixture. Shape each dough balls into grape tomato sizes, and roll them in the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar. Place the cookies 2 inches apart onto an ungreased cookie sheet, and flatten slightly by placing a spoon on top and press.
  3. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container.

To make the melted snowman cookies:

Ingredients: (for 2 dozens)

800g of fondant icing sugar                                                24 gingerbread cookies( the ones made)

24 large white marshmallows                                             96 mini smarties(chocolate beans)

24 pretzel sticks                                                                      black writing icing

To-Do:

  1. Put the icing sugar into a bowl and add cold water one teaspoon at a time until the mixture is perfect consistency(runny but thick enough to coat a spoon).
  2. Cut the marshmallows in half using scissors, be careful.
  3. Spoon a small amount of icing onto each cookie and attach half a marshmallow on top of the cookie. Using a little more icing, stick the other half on top at an angle. Drizzle a little more icing onto the cookie to make melting snow.
  4. Snap the pretzel sticks in half and place on the cookie as arms for the melted snowman. Stick orange smarties on for the noses. Stick three more smarties on each cookie to represent buttons.
  5. Using the black writing icing, pipe small blobs for the eyes and mouth. Leave to set. Repeat with all 24 cookies.

Holt Renfrew lock into Paris fashion show: music and atmosphere

What comes to mind when you think about Calgary? Sure, we have a booming oil and gas industry and host the annual Calgary Stampede, but that only touches the surface of what our city has to offer. From numerous productions of plays and ballets to art exhibits featuring works by Dali and Turner, the arts are deeply embedded in our culture, and that was exactly what was being celebrated at the Holt Renfrew Lock into Paris Fashion Show. As a kick-off and benefit event for the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra’s J’amie Paris Festival (more information on their website here), the classy event boasted talent from all sectors. Fashion models, patisseries, television personalities, CEOs, and world renowned musicians all made their presence at the show. Fellow blogger and fashion editor Ailin and I also graced the venue, DSLRs in hand, to capture the festivities of the night.


The prestigious fashion show was hosted at Devonian Gardens, everyone’s favourite indoor park. With it’s relaxing koi ponds, fountains, and million-dollar vegetation, the park was transformed into a fashion hub by the makeshift runway and bright purple lighting that subsequently caused us to look like purple smurfs in all our selfies. The set-up was evocative of a humble French cafe; a very glamorous one.

Attendees also got a taste of Paris from the base of Eiffel Tower, where us photographers camped out during the fashion show to get the best snapshots of the runway styles.

The event was hosted by Jason and Aly, commonly known as The Style Guys, and introduced by the committee chair of the event, Cynthia Moore. At the door, CPO musicians welcomed people at the coat check with their abundant repertoire, and later complimented the runway with original Parisian-style compositions by assistant concertmaster Donovan Seidle. Internationally recognized Russian pianist Samson Tsoy also made an appearance, stunning audiences with his speedy and eloquent finger work.

What’s a fun night without food? Thankfully, the event had tons of sweet desserts and savory appetizers from the top chefs in the city. Ailin and I went on to sample delicious desserts made by award-winning Belgian patisserie Manuel Latruwe, who was very welcoming and friendly. If you ever happen upon a sweet tooth, they are housed at 1333 – 1 Street SE in the same building as Bernard Callebaut. Keep your eye out for their savoury holiday macaron collection, featuring fan-favourites such as maple bacon, fois gras/onion chutney, and jalapeno/brie cheese.

Next up, we visited Oil & Vinegar‘s booth, where we munched on fresh croutons dipped in our choice of delicious oils infused with herbs and spices available from their two Calgary venues. I recommend giving their olive oil with chilli pepper a try in your next dish.

Before we left and called it a night, we were given these cute French macaron duos; also from Monplaisir Delicacies,  that felt much too pretty to eat (though I can affirm that they were amazing and appetizing).

Insights from aspiring Calgary musician Vincent Christianson

On Oct. 29, I had the pleasure of attending Folk U’s first session, “The Nuts and Bolts of Sound Equipment and Backline,” at the Calgary Folk Music Festival’s Festival Hall. It was at the open mic session afterwards that I became acquainted with the extremely talented, passionate Vincent Christianson, a young musician working to achieve his dreams as a Calgarian artist. Earlier this year, he won first place at the Calgary Folk Music Festival’s composition competition, and is making great strides in establishing himself musically.

After his performance of two of his compositions, I caught up with him to ask him a bit about his music, his inspirations, and his thoughts on how others can work to achieve their musical goals.

Carol: Who are you and what do you aim to achieve with your work?
Vincent: I’m Vincent Lee Christianson and I’m 16 years old. With my music, I aim to express myself and make it heard. I hope to really touch people, and thats why I focus on lyrics, as that’s what I think can really speak to a person.

C: What makes music important to you?
V: Music is important to me because of how strongly it affects me. I get so touched by music, and I can’t think of anything else that really does the same thing. It makes anything enjoyable for me, and I just hope to make music that can do the same thing to other people.

C: How would you describe your style of music?
V: My style of music would be relaxed and melodic folk, centred around the storytelling style lyrics that got big in the 60s. Im also hoping to introduce some unique elements music wise into it, as I produce electronic music and sing classically. I’m hoping to find and interesting mix where I can involve all the areas of music that I love.

C: Can you describe your creative process?
V: For me, when I’m writing songs, usually I have to be inspired by something. It can be another song that I absolutely loved, or just a simple phrase that stood out to me during my day. Usually I have a phrase or idea that I want to the song to be centred around, and then I’ll just play around and experiment until I have something melodically that I think will work. Once I have the main idea for both the lyrics and music, it just flows.

C: What keeps you motivated?
V: I don’t really have to do anything to stay motivated. I love music and I love making it, and once I have an idea I am determined to make something out of it. Really, when I make music, not only am I doing it for others, but I am also doing it for myself.

C: What advice would you give to other young musicians hoping to make music their career in Calgary?
V: I would say to never be shy. I can’t really speak with a ton of experience but I feel like so many opportunities can be lost if artists don’t have the nerve to stand up and promote themselves. And also, every little thing is exposure, no matter how small.
