IMG_1747IMG_1748IMG_1749

Ingredients

2 chicken breasts
1 1/2 cup pineapple
2 large potatoes
2-3 tbs corn starch
2 glove garlic
2 eggs
200-400 ml oil
3-4 tbs ketchup
1 green onion (optional – for decoration)
1/2 tbs sugar
1  sweet pepper (optional – for taste)

Preparation

  1. Cut the potatoes into small pieces (I have small potatoes that why I cut them into half)
  2. Cut the chicken breast into small pieces; they should be around the same size as the cut potatoes.
  3. Cut the pineapple into pieces around the same size as the chicken breast and potatoes (you can also buy pineapple that is already peeled and cut).
  4. Beat two eggs and mix well (They will be used to coat the chicken for deep frying).
  5. Mince the garlic, cut the green onion and sweet pepper.

Method

Chicken and Potatoes

  1. Put a small pot on the stove and add the oil (enough to deep fry). Wait until the oil is hot (Be careful! you may want to let your parents help you if necessary).
  2. Make sure that your potatoes are not wet, add them to the hot oil and fry for 10-15 minutes or until until they are golden brown.
  3. While the potatoes are cooking, dip the chicken breast in the beaten eggs and coat with corn starch.
  4. When the potatoes are finished,  put into a bowl lined with paper towel to drain the excess oil.
  5. Add the chicken breast to the oil and repeat the process. Be sure to test a piece of chicken to make sure that it it cooked all the way through.

IMG_1756IMG_1757IMG_1758IMG_1759

Sweet and Sour Sauce

  1. Put a frying pan on the stove, add oil and add the minced garlic. (Make sure you don’t add the garlic into the hot oil because it will burn easily).
  2. Stir well and add ketchup (4-5 tbsp.) when you smell the aroma of the garlic. Continue stirring.
  3. Add water (add little by little; the amount will depend on how much you want) Continue stirring.
  4. Add sugar, about 1-2 tbs to taste. You can taste the sauce to see if you need more sugar after.
  5. Add pineapple and green pepper (optional). If you are allergic to pineapple, you can substitute in vinegar or lemon instead. White vinegar is ideal, but remember that you will need to add more corn starch if you use vinegar. Mix well.
  6. Season sauce with salt and/or black pepper to taste.
  7. If your sauce is very watery, add corn starch (about 1-2 tsp. to thicken). If you are using vinegar, add the corn starch immediately after adding the vinegar because it evaporates very quickly.
  8. When you are happy with your sauce, mix the chicken, potatoes and the sauce together in a serving dish or pour sauce over the chicken and potatoes; whichever you prefer.
  9. Serve with steamed rice (optional but highly recommended).

What YAA loves about Christmas: Christmas carols everywhere

0

Best-Colorful-Christmas-Wallpapers-8

Cue the name puns.

Christmas songs seem to get some mixed reactions from the general audience – some people love them to bits, others hate them with a passion. I myself belong to the former side of the fence. I love hearing Christmas songs blasted over department store speakers, and I shamelessly spam the replay button on my Christmas playlist.

Here are a few selections from the aforementioned playlist that is guaranteed to add a little bit of Christmas sparkle to your day.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QO5yxp_Ts-A

Opening up the list is Tyler Ward and Alex G’s awesome, super fun cover of “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” It’s really hard not to get pumped for Christmas after watching this hilarious, silly Christmas video.

Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) is a classic, although unfortunately, Darlene Love’s original version isn’t one you’ll hear on the airwaves or in the malls too often. Upbeat but with bittersweet lyrics, it’s a perfect ode to someone who won’t be home for Christmas this year.

Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is one of the most-covered Christmas songs in the past few years, but very little comes close to the original.

I think we would all be lying to ourselves if we said that we have never sang along to the Grinch song at Christmas. Dr. Seuss’ classic kids’ movie will stay in our hearts long past the time when we’re no longer considered kids.

Closing up this list is one more Christmas classic by Frank Sinatra. There really is nothing that beats the fireside-fuzzy feeling you get from listening to old carols in the warmth of your living room.

A very merry Christmas from all of us at YAA!

3 fashion statements anyone could make

0

Some high- fashion trends can be hard to pull of in an everyday look. Unless you live in LA or New York, it’s not exactly easy to wear sky high creepers or a big furry coat without getting a few judgmental stares. Here are my three favorite fashion risks that the average person can make without standing out too much.

1.  Fun colored lipstick

This is by far my favorite fashion trend because it’s a statement that isn’t too showy and easy to match to your outfit. Instead of pairing your outfit with a bright red or pink, try grey and purple hues, oranges, greens and even dark blues and blacks! I would suggest making your outfit plain, but still fashionable. I would not wear jeans and a plain tee with this look, go for a vintage band tee and a blazer or a fun and bold patterned dress with this look! You usually can’t find these kinds of colors at a drugstore or even Sephora so I recommend visiting limecrime.com if you aren’t sure where to look for these killer hues. It’s affordable, the packaging is cute and their pigmentation is great. My favorite color is the purplish grey “chinchilla” but the less daring could also try out the peachy “cosmopop” or “d’lilac” the pastel purple that’s sure to make a statement.

2. Baby bangs

I currently sport this look and am in love with it. For all of you who don’t know, baby bangs are basically a straight across fringe that range anywhere from being cut about halfway between your eyebrows and the top of your head to being so short they are almost non existent. Although not everyone loves them, they can look good on anyone and are super easy to maintain. Baby Bangs were Audrey Hepburn’s staple but didn’t really get big again until stars like Paramore’s Hayley Williams, Lady Gaga and even Béyonce rocked the looks in the past couple of years. If you have an edgy side but still like to be girly, Baby Bangs are the perfect alternative for you. They can make you look younger, are very feminine but also edgy and fun. Plus they look killer with shorter hair and nicely drawn eyebrows.

3. Statement sweatshirts

Sweatshirts with fun sayings on them are a great way to vamp up your casual look. Not only will you look great, but you’ll make people laugh and definitely get heads turning. Keep the rest of the outfit simple to let the sayings shine! Wear leggings, sneakers and a beanie for a casual look or try pairing it with a leather skater skirt and knee highs for a more playful outfit.

How to make your own candy canes

0

Candy canes are one of the essential items for Christmas and they are often adored by children. However, some individuals question if the store candy canes bought at stores are really that sanitary. So, we are going to make our own little candy canes today.

Ingredients

  • Vegetable oil, cooking spray
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon pure peppermint extract
  • 1 drop red gel-paste food coloring
  • 1 drop green gel-paste food coloring

Directions

  • Spray a very thin layer of vegetable oil onto the parchment paper. In a small saucepan, add sugar, corn syrup, and water to a boil in a small saucepan, and stirring frequently with a wooden spoon, until sugar dissolves and the mixture is a luscious liquid. Cook, DO NOT STIR IT, until mixture registers 305 degrees on a candy thermometer, for about 12 minutes. Remove the pan from the stovetop, add in lemon juice and peppermint extract and stir. BE QUICK, pour hot sugar mixture onto prepared sheet. (CAUTION: The liquid is extremely hot) Let cool about 30 seconds until bubbles subside.

  • Spray a metal spatula with vegetable oil.  Fold 2 edges of mixture inward vertically, toward center. Continuously fold candy in half on itself with spatula until it is cool enough to handle, about 1 minute (CAUTION: The candy will still be very hot)

  • Washing your hands very thoroughly , pull candy to a desired length, then fold in half on itself. Repeat, twisting and pulling until candy starts to turn white. Remove a golf-ball-sized piece, and add food colorings to the piece. Continue to stretch and fold both pieces separately. When candy is almost cool, and the uncolored piece is white, pull each piece into a 12-inch-long rope.

  • Place ropes side by side, and fold in half together to layer colors. Twist pieces together. Starting at 1 end, pull and twist until rope is 1/2 inch thick. Working quickly, twist and pull end to taper slightly, and cut off a 6-inch length with scissors. Continue twisting, pulling, and carefully make a curve at one end of the stick before the candy becomes too hard and can no longer be pulled.

Crash Course: Quantum Mechanics Part 1

0

Are you a student of Physics 30? Are you as frenzied  by quantum mechanics as I am? Well, fear not, your savior is here with a quick run through on many of the concepts covered in Quantum Physics.

qm 1

I therefore welcome you to… Quantum Physics Part 1: The Beginning

  1.  As you may know, light was quantized, ie, restricted to a number of possible values. Basically, light is a bundle of ‘packets’ of energy called ‘photons’, and each photon can carry only a certain amount of energy.
  2. Blackbody- An object that completely absorbs any light energy that falls on it, from any part of the EMR spectrum. After heating up, it becomes a perfect radiator.
  3. Blackbody radiation curve shows that the shortest wavelength has the highest amount of energy. Thus, shorter wavelengths are more efficient in emitting larger amounts of energy.
    qm 2
Blackbody radiation curve. As you can see, shorter frequencies of light(ie, blue) have the highest amounts of energy)
  4. This lead to a disturbing conclusion- if an object was heated enough, it would emit EMR of short wavelengths like UV light, X-rays, etc.
  5. However, this did not happen (phew!). This error was called the “Ultraviolet Catastrophe” as according to classical Physics, the increase in frequency(or decrease in wavelength) of EMR absorbed by the blackbody should have resulted in it radiating EMR of higher frequencies and shorter wavelength.
  6. Max Planck, the genius that he is, quantized energy- he proposed that light carried energy in discrete bundles and each bundle could have only a limited amount of energy. And ladies and gentlemen, we have come to Planck’s formula-
    E = nhf
where E is the energy of the quanta/packets of energy(J) , n is the number of quanta, h is Planck’s Constant(which may vary, I use 6.63×10^-34 J/s) and f is the frequency of light.
(The frequency of light can be calculated using  f = c/λ )
  7. Einstein added to this idea of ‘quanta’, proposing that light could be quantized. Boom, you got the photon!
    qm 3
    Max Planck
    qm 4
    Albert Einstein
  8. Because of this theory, we could relate the emission of photons from its source. Which basically means, you cannot expect a human to radiate Gamma rays. Because that would be silly. And dangerous.
  9. Photoelectric Effect- The emission of electrons from a metal plate when EMR of high frequency(UV and higher) is shone on it.
    qm 5
    The Photoelectric Effect
  10. An electron on the metal plate absorbs the energy of the photon and escapes.
  11. Work Function(φ/W)- The minimum amount of energy a photon must possess in order to cause photo-emission, ie, emission of electrons.
  12. Threshold Frequency- The minimum frequency the photon must have in order to cause photoemission.
  13. Stopping potential- The potential difference for which the kinetic energy of the photoelectron is equal to the work done in moving it against it(the potential difference).
Vstop = E/q ,where E is the maximum kinetic energy of the photoelectron and q is the charge of the electron.
(* A photoelectron has the same mass and charge as an electron.)

This is the conclusion of Quantum Mechanics Part 1! In Part 2, I will talk about Compton’s Effect, Heisenberg, Schrödinger, De Broglie, and all the interesting concepts they came up with. Ciao till then!

WestJet’s Christmas miracle videos

The Spirit of Giving

WestJet recently released its annual Christmas miracle video, this time taking place in a community in the Dominican Republic. Santa asked the people what they wanted for Christmas, but little did they know that their wish would actually come true. Even if you see this as a campaign just  to improve WestJet’s public relations, I think it’s still an important reminder that the holidays are really about the spirit of giving rather than receiving. I can’t help but smile while watching this video and I hope you do too.

Previous Year

In case you haven’t seen last year’s video, here it is, this time taking place right here in Calgary. Travelers were asked what they wanted for Christmas before their departure. WestJet took notes and rushed to fulfill all their wishes before they arrived in Calgary. Their reactions just go to show that making others happy can make you just as happy.

We always have something to give, even if it’s just a few kind words and sometimes that’s even more meaningful than material goods. Let’s make sure that everyone has a happy holiday.

Bill 10: The who, what, when, where, and whys

0

If you’ve been exposed to the news lately, then you have probably heard about the controversial Bill 10, a bill that, if initiated, would almost certainly have detrimental effects on the rights of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning) students in Alberta. Last Thursday, Premier Jim Prentice put the bill on hold indefinitely midst outcries from Albertans. This bill still faces many questions, but my biggest one upon hearing about it was “what is it?”  I found myself deep under a plethora of news articles regarding the issue, but none that clarified the details. I knew I couldn’t be the only person caught in this sea of uncertainty, so after some research, I’ve broken down the bill into the who, what, when, where, and whys.

bill 10
Premier Prentice announces the hold of bill 10 in a news conference last Thursday (Image: CTV News)

Who is involved?

The Progressive Conservative government of Alberta and the LGBTQ community

What is it?

Bill 10 was introduced by the PCs last Monday and dictates the controversial issue of whether a GSA (gay-straight alliance) should be enacted in the schools if requested by students. GSAs have been shown by numerous studies to reduce bullying and alienation of LGBTQ youth, saving lives in the process, yet only 90 schools in Alberta have the clubs. This bill will allow school boards up to the provincial level to decline a student’s request for a GSA, and if that should be the case, the student must appeal to the courts about the issue. Recent but still controversial amendments to the bill would push education minister Gordon Dirks to approve the alliances, even if they are declined by the school boards. However, the GSAs will most-likely be held off school campus, raising further concerns about the segregation of LGBTQ youth.

When did this happen and when will it end?

The bill was first made public on December 1st, and put on hold on the 4th. Due to the discontent surrounding it, the PCs have expressed that further discussions on the matter will not take place until after the new year.

Where (what region) does this bill affect?

If initiated, bill 10 will cause changes to all schools in Alberta that have seen students ask for GSAs.  Alberta has been a province that has had the most troubles regarding LGBTQ rights since the Civil Marriage Act was enacted in 2005.

Why did this will come into being?

Remember those forms your parents had to fill out so you could take health class? That’s Alberta’s unique Human Rights Act at work, and also where Bill 10 found it’s roots. The Human Rights Act requires schools to notify guardians when matters of religion and sexuality are to be discussed in class, and gives parents the power to remove their children from those classes. Bill 10 was a feeble attempt by the government to respect the Act as well as the rights of LGBTQ students.

Since the beginning of this year, politicians like Kent Hehr have proposed motions to require schools to support the creation of GSAs to no avail. A private members bill, bill 202, was introduced by Liberal Laurie Blakeman in November and pitched the removal of the topic of sexual orientation to be a viable reason for parents to remove youth from classrooms as stated in the Human Rights Act, as well as requiring school boards to approve GSAs if asked for. This proposal was subsequently squashed by the Tory caucus, who introduced bill 10 as a way to “meet in the middle.”

Since the royal assent of the Civil Marriage Act in 2005, Canada became the 4th country in the world to grant full marital rights to LGBTQ couples. Despite this, much more work is yet to be done in the field of LGBTQ rights in this country. There is no doubt that this issue will be one to watch for in the upcoming year; a year where we will see the formation of GSAs in schools all over our province?

Winter driving 101

0

Amidst the cheer of family, friends, and holiday tunes, winter driving is truly the repentance that reminds us all of reality. In a weather-fluctuating city like Calgary, winter driving can be an absolute nightmare. I am hopeful that most of you have taken a safety driving course in your lifetime. So today, I want to share with you some of the life lessons I have learned about winter driving in short driving career:

1. Take your time– I know some of you, especially our newer drivers, want to appear cool and steadfast. But really, are two extra minutes worth it? If you think about the time that you are actually trying to “save” by going fast, it is not a whole lot. That red light is still going to mean the same thing. Safety is everything, so on a slippery day, take your time with it. Let the other manic drivers speed past you. Do not let others pressure you into going faster. We, the decent human beings, understand that on a winter morning, it’s better to take it slow. With that said, please, let’s not try to be that overbearing turtle that is causing more damage than good.

2. Winter tires– Changing your tires is a must when living in a wintry city. Even if you drive a 4×4 and are confident that nothing will happen to you, it is always better to be safe than sorry. During our way to a winter hike last year, one of the cars, a Subaru 4-wheeler, skidded off of the road and got stuck in a ditch. Do not think that you will be an exception to the chaos of winter driving.

3. Wash those windows– Calgary has a unique snow removal program and it’s referred to as a chinook (thank you Ms. B. for the wonderful joke). With the stark changes of the weather in our city, always be prepared for those muddy days on the road, where all the ice has melted and has created a splendid masterpiece all over your windshield. Trust me, you want to be prepared with litres of windshield washer fluid. Do it, do it right now.

4. Park wisely– This sounds quite obvious, but be cautious of where you choose to park. Do not be the one that everyone mocks because you were the one to park on the side nearest to the ditch. Also, be cautious of the city’s policy on snow route parking bans. These are areas that are marked off for parking to aid the city’s efforts in snow removal. To truly park wisely, you need to factor in weather, shelter and position. If there is a blizzard, try to park near some sort of shelter or nearer other cars. This way, you will not have to worry too much about cleaning your car off afterwards. Also, winter is not the time to be doing close-call parallel parking. Be wary of how you are parking. The icy conditions may not look favourably upon your adventurous skills.

Try to avoid this…

5. Emergency winter kit– You never know what is going to happen out on the road, especially during this time of year. So keep a kit of essentials, such as, food, water and a first aid kit. Your emergency winter kit should also stock a shovel to possibly dig yourself out of a snowbank. In addition, keep your ice scraper, salt, and chains handy. These are the tools that you will mostly need to help you on your winter’s drive. Hopefully, you will not need all of them. For more tips, check out this link.

The last and more obvious tip is to think safe and logically. If you are even doubting something, do not spontaneously go for it. Be confident in the moves that you make as a driver. Also remember that sometimes  you cannot control everything. As much as you are a good driver, inevitably, there are going to be unsafe drivers out there. Just try your best, and always be safe.

My top 5 favourite sweaters for girls

0

So wintertime is cold. And it just so happens that winter takes up a third of our Calgary year. Being an optimistic sweater lover, a long winter season means a long period of sweater weather. The best sweaters are warm, soft, and fashionable. It’s better to buy a sweater in store rather than online, to ensure quality and comfort. Itchy sweaters are no doubt the worst. For daily wear, I like the look of sweaters that are a bit loose to fit, because it gives a relaxed and clean look without taking away at the stylishness. Sweaters with patterns are great for everyday life, and block colors or minimal prints contribute towards a polished professional look. That being said, here is a picture list of my top five favorite sweaters:

The new Disney sensation: Big Hero 6

0

Jasmine K.

Designed to entertain skillfully, “Big Hero 6” is a sci-fi film teeming with exciting action and subduing graphics. This movie packs humour and adventure into one hour and 45 minutes with all the features you can expect from Disney and more.

As Disney’s 54th animated canon film, “Big Hero 6” is based off a Marvel story and features this as their second superhero movie. The heroes? A robot called Baymax and five students from the prestigious university Sanfransokyo Tech with names Go Go Tomago, Wasabi, Honey Lemon, Fred and Hiro Hamada. Together they save the day from an antagonist who takes advantage of Hiro’s invention: microbots that can be controlled by a neuro-transmitter, making anything possible. Hiro, the protagonist of this story, is first introduced as a genius participating in bot-fighting, an illegal activity in the city of San Fransokyo. His brother, who can’t stand to see his brother’s ability being misused, introduces Hiro to his university, where Hiro finds that he wants –needs– to go to Sanfransokyo Tech. From there, Hiro meets his future companions and befriends the personal health care assistant, Baymax. Hiro encounters many obstacles afterwards, but he surmounts these seemingly insurmountable obstacles with the help of his robot.

One vital part of every film is animation. As an animated film, the graphics of each scene and the mood it evokes is essential to the quality of the movie. With 15 more crew members than from the team of “Frozen,” “Big Hero 6” turns out to be a success in terms of animation as well. Its futuristic scenes demand a higher quality of graphics, giving “Big Hero 6” a boost in terms of detail and originality in its graphic design as well.

One setback for the movie, however, is the story. The storyline of “Big Hero 6” is, in a sense, predictable and typical for superhero films: the protagonist suffers from a blow but overcomes the obstacle, resolving to become a hero. The plot takes a large portion of the unpredictability away from the movie, creating a piece that depends on its comedy, graphics and other elements that balance the damage left from the storyline. Although humor and details of a movie are important, the story is the most essential portion in movie-making that engages consumers.

In general, “Big Hero 6” proves to be an exciting and well composed composition. So, if you are looking for a movie to watch in theaters this weekend, watch “Big Hero 6” and see how you like it!

When I hit shuffle…

You know that feeling when you press the shuffle button on your favourite music playing device and it spits out a perfect set of songs that flawlessly describe how your current mood? This happened to me a few days ago and for some reason, it’s been on my mind for a while. There must be some sort of shuffle elves or something out there, because this is obviously some sort of magic.

1. Hammer To Fall – Queen

To me, Hammer To Fall is a track that although is really great to use to get pumped up, shows part of Queen’s signature style; iconic and well-known music that people everywhere sing along to, but that isn’t necessarily as happy as it seems. That really doesn’t change my opinion of it at all though. Queen is one of the most influential bands since the Beatles (in my opinion) and this song just shows just how good even their slightly less well-known tracks are.

2. Forgive and Forget – You Me At Six

From You Me At Six’s newest album, Cavalier Youth (which I reviewed here), Forgive and Forget is yet another track that has a melody that betrays the lyrics. That being said, it’s still something I can relate to. Sometimes you just need a song that embodies how you feel in order to make the feeling go away.

3. Slice – Five For Fighting

Five For Fighting created nostalgia for something I’ve never experienced. Slice evokes a desire to go back to simpler times where music was something more than just something designed by corporate sellouts. It’s a weird feeling, wanted to go back to something that you’ve never felt for yourself. When music speaks of music, that’s when I listen most.

4. Wish You Were Here – Pink Floyd

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NavVfpp-1L4

This is one of the tracks that I maintain a firm belief that no artist can cover and do justice to. Wish You Were Here is the kind of song that makes me feel things I can’t express. If you asked me to explain why I love this song, my answer would be, “Just because I do.”

5. Stay – Mayday Parade

Among the songs that shuffle decided I should hear, Stay is, to me, the most powerful song on the list. In fact, my favourite lyric of all time comes from it: “Oh can’t you tell I haven’t slept very well since the last time that we spoke?” This is the song I turn to whenever I miss someone, and truth be told, that’s pretty much every day.

In the end, I maintain that shuffle is run by tiny little creatures that have an uncanny ability to read emotions and create perfect playlists. Take that, every online service that claims to be able to do it better.

The Abandoned Blade – A short story

0

My father had been missing for more than seven days. That was one hundred and sixty-eight hours that I had been without a father. That was ten-thousand and eighty minutes that I had cared for my young siblings alone. My name is Ishmamel Beah. I was born a slave and I will die a slave. I came to this realization, when I was exactly seven years old. Now, ten years later, I have finally given up on the hope of something different. My young siblings would never taste freedom either but they had not yet learned the bitter taste of captivity. They were still young.

I was crouching on a riverbank at dusk. The pale glow of the moonlight was rapidly replacing the fading sun. I had to find something. I couldn’t tell if I was looking for my father or not. Things hadn’t exactly been worse since his disappearance. The children surely missed him but the sadness of missing someone is not as bad as…I shuddered and cut off the train of thought. I recalled the conversation I had with ‘Massa’ as father had called him, shortly after my father’s disappearance.

“Son, I’ve told you once and I’ve told you a million times. I don’t know where he is.”

It was always he. Never ‘your father’ or ‘Mr. Beah’. Always ‘he’. I used to live in the ignorance of thinking the Massa actually knew our names. I chuckled darkly at the thought. The ‘Massa’ had probably sold my father without even bothering to tell his children.

“Your mama can take care of you children,” the Massa used to say.

“But I ain’t got no mama,” I would reply in my broken English.

My mother had died years ago, before I had tasted the reality of captivity. With her, died my hope. She had always spoken of Africa, my home. Where animals ran without cages and lions prowled the darkest of nights. Sometimes, I swore I could taste the maize she spoke of. I felt more at home in her stories than I ever did in the homes of my owners.

I slowly began to return home, not finding what I had been searching for, still confused about what I had even thought I would find. I was just in time. The candles were beginning to go out. I was so proud of my little sister, putting the babies to bed. My sister was almost fifteen now and she had done so much for everyone in this family. The two babies were eight and ten and they had barely known their mother. I tried not to think about it too much. It was difficult for me to imagine.

“Tell us a story!” the youngest screamed when I entered the room.

I put a finger to my lips, “Shhh, quite there now.”

However, I complied and told them of Africa, of the dry sand and scorching heat. I told them of the elephants and strange birds, when I was at loss of English words with which to describe them, I jumped up and down, imitating how I imagined them.

“Why can’t we go to Africa?” Mariatu, the ten-year-old, asked quietly.

“It’s far away my child,” I explained, leaving out the part that we were trapped here.

“We could walk!” interjected Jane, the youngest. I detested the name that our owners had given her, many slaves had been given ‘sophisticated’ names, my friend also having that priviledge. But one day, she would taste freedom.

“I don’t know,” I added doubtfully, “You’ve got tiny legs. Let them grow a bit and then we’ll walk there!”

She giggled and they settled into bed. I sighed at their happiness, it was amazing. It was hard to believe that I used to be that ignorant. One day, they too would find out that we were oceans away from Africa, many, many miles away in a place named Rome.

I woke up the next morning, my best friend was shaking me. He was eighteen and was almost crushing me with his weight.

“Ishamel! Ishamel!” he was worried.

“What is it?” I looked around frantically. The children had gone down to the pond so I was alone, “Did I miss work? Is Massa calling me? I thought it was-”

“Don’t worry my friend, that’s not it!” he was troubled, “I found your papa…”

“Yes, yes?” I asked hopefully.

“I’m sorry, you ain’t gonna like it.”

My face fell, “Is-is he dead?”

“No, no,” my friend said quickly, “Not yet at least.”

“Where is he? Why did he not come himself?” I didn’t understand what was going on.

“Ishamel, you see, your papa is gonna fight the gladiators this evening.”

The gladiators. A death sentence. Everyone knew that. The annual fights in honor of some king was this week. How could I have forgotten? I felt the tears threatening to come but just then Mariatu and Jane entered. I coughed to disguise the inner turmoil I felt.

“Hello Ishamel!” they danced around me, their hair slightly damp, both carrying and armful of wet clothing to be dried.

“Hello, Alex and I are gonna go see something real quick. You stay here and tell your sis not to worry ‘bout us too much.”

They nodded and I left, dragging Alex behind me. Well I guess he let me drag him because there was no way I would have been able to drag him out. Together, we ran down the dusty streets and pushed by sellers who were trying to sell us things. I had no money, even if I did, I wouldn’t spend it on their goods. I heard a roar of shouts from the colosseum. Something big was happening. My guess was the lions, they were always the opening act. I let Alex lead me down a narrow stairwell until we were underneath the stage, where everyone waited for the fight.

“Ishamel!” I heard my name shouted. I ran towards the sound, faster and faster until I thought I could run no further. Then I saw him. My father in a cell, his hand outstretched through the bars. He was thin and dying. I should have thought to bring something to eat.

“I’m sorry papa, I should have brought something for you to eat! I-”

“My son, you must dry your tears now. It won’t matter that I haven’t eaten if I don’t survive the next hour,” my father rubbed the tears off my face but they were instantly replaced, “Do not cry for me, cry for yourself because you no longer believe in freedom. Take care of your siblings, teach them to never ever stop believing.”

“No papa, I’m not leaving you!” I argued back.

“I love you,” my father said.

“No! NO! I need you! You can’t leave us!” I begged.

“You’re so grown up-”

“NO!” I shook my head, the tears coming faster, “You can win, you can survive!”

It was my father’s turn to be bitter, “Me? Against an armoured gladiator? With my bare hands?”

“Take this,” I pressed the handle of my small knife into his hand.

“No,” he calmly refused it but I would not take it back. A light came from the back of the cell. It was time for the fight, or rather the killing of an innocent man. For the enjoyment of others. A father, with four children and no mother. An innocent man. My father turned from me, a sad smile on his lips and he walked into the arena. Through the bars I watched. Though Alex tried to pull me away, I was riveted. Maybe my father would survive, he now had an advantage and the element of surprise. I shook my head as I thought of my blade against the sword and shield of a gladiator.

The match began and my father ran. He ran from his death. The gladiator chased him but was slow in his heavy armour. The tears came again as my father was cornered. In his last few moments, he gave the crowd exactly what they had wanted. A show. To think that my father’s sacrifice brought joy to others ripped my heart in two. I’d seen some tough things in my life but this… this was not what humans were meant to do to eachother. The gladiator’s blade came down and my father fell. His dark skin contrasting with the dust on the ground mingling with his blood. Then something caught my eye on the floor of my father’s cell. It was my knife. My father had dropped the knife on his way into the arena.

There it lay, abandoned. Ironic really, the way that knife represented my family now. What was I supposed to do? My father’s broken body lay in the corner of the arena, cast off to one side. The people’s screams and shouts of excitement were deafening. I hated them. Every single one of them. I swore to myself that never again, would I let this violence touch my family. My siblings would never know of this horror. My father had joined my mother in Africa and that is all they would ever know. One day we would join them as well and taste the sweet freedom I had only dreamed of. The anger burned within me though, and as much as I tried to smother it, I knew that one day I would avenge my father’s death.

Harambee 2014: International philanthropists at work

0

When we hear the words “Third-world,” we often picture the war-torn and poverty-stricken countries in Africa. Ravaged by decades of internal conflicts resulted from European colonialism, and not to mention the recent Ebola outbreak, it makes sense that if there is anyone in the world that needs our help, it’s them.

PFPF

A Calgarian foundation is doing just that. The People For Progress Foundation (PFPF) is a Charity Organization based in Calgary and Kenya that aims to provide humanitarian aid to disadvantaged communities in East Africa in the form of education and sponsorship of primary and secondary students. Their goal, according to their mission statement, is to empower individuals and communities in need to achieve sustainability through education, leadership and partnership. With a fully functional two-year-old Raven Educational Center located in Kenya and various sonsored students and communities, I would say that they have been greatly successful.

Last Friday I was invited to the Harambee, a fundraising event hosted by PFPF in order to raise money and support for their cause. The evening included a silent auction with luxurious items donated by sponsors, an African jewelry sale, and entertainment in the form of dancing and singing. All proceeds goes into the support of education in East Africa of course. (all photo credits go to Event Media Manager Angela Chen and Ruth Chen)

While at the event, I met my classmate Angela Chen, who was the Event Media Manager of the event, which meant that she made the pamphlets, PowerPoint, and videos that made this whole event possible. I got a chance to ask Angela some questions about her time with PFPF, and unsurprisingly, she gave me some pretty inspiring answers.

Q: What is the People For Progress Foundation? Describe in your own words.

People for Progress Foundation is an organization that strives to make a better tomorrow. By empowering the next generation of Kenya and other East African countries through education, we are creating a ripple effect that we hope will affect the student’s community and bring hope to the future of these student and their families. We hope that these through education, these students will have the opportunity to escape the poverty cycle and obtain a job that will guarantee a better standard of living. Most of all, PFPF envisions a generation of confident individuals who have the resources to reach their full potential in life.

Q: How did you hear about this organization, and what compelled you to join?

I had a friend who went on a mission trip to Kenya, Africa through the organization. She was talking to me the work she did with them. Working with this organization gives me the opportunity to be involved with the development of education in the third-world. I eventually aim to become a missionary/third-world doctor and work with doctors without borders, so volunteering with the PFPF is a very fulfilling experience.

Q: How do you feel about the experience so far with PFPF?

It is very rewarding and encouraging to see these kids-who are very hard working in their deprived conditions-excelling and succeeding in their life, as they are given the opportunity to achieve something great. My experience taught me not to take my education for granted, and it gave me a chance to channel my passion for positive change.

Q: Can you share with us a success story that became possible due to PFPF?

Priskila Uronu is one of the sponsor students of Machame village, Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. She’s in high school, but unlike our high school, it was in a really poor condition. She tried to do well, but with the lack of resources, textbooks, and lab equipment, she was very limited. People for Progress took her out of that school and into a private, boarding school. Although the cost was much higher than before, she is able to receive an education that could lead to a better job or even post secondary. Her grades are improving and she’s so much more confident! It’s super inspiring to know that you’re making a difference and bringing hope in another person’s life who is the same age as you, but in much different circumstances. It makes me appreciate my education and gives me a want to give this same luxury to everyone.

I’d like to thank Angela for her insightful contribution to both the event and this article. If you would like to find out more about the organzization, or if you would like to make a donation, you can find them at Facebook or their official website. Just as volunteers like Angela have demonstrated, any individual can make a big difference in the world, if you are doing something you love.

Are holidays too commercialized?

0

With the holiday season coming up, there as been a lot of advertising. This really got me thinking about our society. What is the definition of too much commercialization? Stores such as Walmart and Superstore immediately put their Christmas decorations up the day after Halloween! What does this say about our community?

The holiday season is supposed to be about whom you spend it with, a time to remember friends and family. It is a time to be grateful for what you have and to help out those less fortunate. To light the menorah with family, to adorn the Christmas tree in decorations and strings of lights, to spend time with friends who have been far away. These are the memories that will stay with us. Holidays should have nothing to do with advertising and sales. Holidays have been so commercialized since the invention of the television that people are starting to associate them with sales and gimmicks.

This may be an old-fashioned sentiment, but what happened to “It’s the thought that counts”? There is nothing wrong with the desire to do something nice for your family and your friends. This inclination is a reflection of the feelings for that particular person on any given day of the year. However, the media is making it seem like without an expensive gift, the holiday isn’t as memorable. An expensive gift is not the only way to demonstrate affection, despite the claims of many advertisements. The media is placing a price on the holidays when really it should be about family and friends. The commercialization of the holiday season is overwhelming, to say the least. For example, Christmas used to be all about giving without any ulterior motives. Now as a result of all the advertising, most people think that the joy of the holiday comes out of the gifts. The media is giving people unrealistic expectations of holidays. It tries to tell the public that without buying the most expensive gifts, most expensive christmas trees, food or clothes your holiday season will not be memorable. They make gift buying seem like an obligation and it makes holidays become all about the presents and not family.

Advertising aims to present a product in the best light possible and make the public feel like it is a necessity so they will purchase it. It morphs the holiday to be all about the materialistic values. This misrepresentation gives people the false impressions that without the presents life is meaningless. Therefore basing the holiday on materialistic objects and removing the initial values. Without the true values of the holiday the true spirit and meaning will vanish. Advertising is simply just taking over our lives. So this holiday season, instead of looking forward to all the presents you receive, go celebrate the true meaning of the holidays.

The inevitable fall of the USA

0

The USA is the largest superpower in the world. What would be the consequences of its decline? The inevitable truth is that The United States of America is the biggest superpower in the west (and the world at the moment) and this nation is declining as a superpower. The US acts as the international police fighting for countries across the world and working towards making them a peaceful and prosperous nation. However, the decline of US international intervention will create more turmoil in eastern countries.

Due to economic and internal political issues, America was forced to withdraw troops from Iraq, after an extremely costly decade-long military occupation, leaving in place a regime more closely allied to Iran, the US ’ regional adversary. The Iraq war depleted the US economy, deprived American corporations of oil wealth, greatly enlarged Washington ’s budget and trade deficits and reduced the living standards of American citizens.  The Afghanistan war had a similar outcome, with high external costs, military retreat, fragile clients, domestic disaffection and no short or medium term transfers of wealth (imperial pillage) to the US Treasury or private corporations. The Libyan war led to the total destruction of a modern, oil-rich economy in North Africa, the total dissolution of state and civil society and the emergence of armed tribal, fundamentalist militias opposed to US and EU client regimes in North and sub-Sahara Africa and beyond.  The current Syrian “proxy war” has strengthened radical Islamist warlords, destroyed Damascus ’ economy and added massive refugee pressure to the already uprooted millions from wars in Iraq and Libya. US imperial wars have resulted in economic losses, regional political instability and military gains for Islamist adversaries.

These missions which are degrading and harming the US economy are driving the eastern world, which is creating disparity as they are taking advantage of America’s poor economic conditions and inability to fight. Eastern superpowers will grow and make efforts to seize and annex other countries around them to gain more political power, due to insecurity which is caused by the amount of military confrontations and threats. It is also evident that many countries have taken extra caution due to many encounters of terrorism and acts of hostility between countries. US changed their foreign policy due to insecurity after 9/11. They changed their focus on terror, alleged allies, humanitarian support and more.

Along with increased power in Eastern countries the world will have to deal with more terrorist organizations.

America, as it loses economic power and militia power, reduces its ability for direct influence in waging war in Middle Eastern countries. Instead, the US is forced to wage a proxy war. A current example of a proxy war would be ISIS. As the US due to its inability to support further missions was forced to pull out troops from Iraq. This resulted in the growth of ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria). The United States are still making efforts to stop this act of terrorism by funding countries in the Middle East like Turkey to help prevent further domination by ISIS. Other countries who oppose the US ideals are funding ISIS as an indirect method of waging war. This turmoil between these two bloc’s that have been created, one supporting ISIS and one against ISIS are demonstrating a proxy war which is common event in a cold war. Overall, With the fall of the large policing superpower US we are giving birth to fragmented superpower nations in the middle east which are largely controlled by terrorists. With the recent setbacks US has come to a realization that it is expensive to fight the militia directly and it may have to take a more passive approach and fight incognito supporting various local factions. This is similar to the situation in Afghanistan in the 80’s when a proxy war was fought between US and the Soviets.

These are the consequences that the world will face as the superpower nation of US declines.
