Ancient Life on Mars

0

NASA recently released an article, detailing how conditions on Mars were once suitable for ancient life, and still may be, to some extent. You can find the article here.

Life? Out Here? (http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/planetary/mars/mars_exploration_rovers/mera_images.html)
Life? Out Here? (image source)

Essentially, the article talks about how samples collected from NASA’s Curiosity rover show sulphur, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and carbon, which are some key ingredients for life. Furthermore, they have found Earth-like microbes and the rover has collected rock samples. Within the rock samples they have also found sulphates and sulphides that indicate a possible chemical energy source for microorganisms. The most notable discovery is that scientists at NASA have identified a grey zone, which is a zone in Mars where conditions were once favourable for life.

This is important because there have been many discussions recently in the international community regarding habitability on other planets, and Mars is the first and foremost planet up for consideration. Because of how close it is relative to other galaxies, it’s numerous similarities to Earth in relation to size, temperature, etc., the fact that we have now found elements that are staples for human life act as a prerequisite for extraterrestrial habitability. Furthermore, the grey zone indicates that there may have been or be extraterrestrial life, and if not, this zone would be the first and foremost zone for humans to arrive on Mars.

There has been lots of work put into exploring Mars that has allowed this revelation to come to light. While humans have not visited Mars yet, numerous rovers have explored Mars, and while previously there was a lot of inferences and speculation regarding the habitability, know we have some proof. A lot of work and experimentation was required in the development of the rover: Curiosity. After this, there was the difficult process of sending it out into space and eventually it reaching Mars. In addition, humans from Earth control it, and while some of its capabilities are automatic, much of it has to be done with care and precision.

There are a few applications of the discoveries, such as extraterrestrial habitability, a basis for other research on Mars or other planets, knowing requirements and where to create infrastructure on Mars for self-sustainability, and the exploration of other extraterrestrial life forms on Mars. These may not be the aliens we see in movies, but bacterium or other microscopic life forms. Within the article, we see how there are also signs that imply there may been a water source at one point. This acts as a prerequisite to extraterrestrial life, human habitation, etc. Extraterrestrial habitability is the most notable and obvious application, as human habitability on other planets is becoming more of a reality by the day. The rover, Curiosity, has yet to complete its two-year research period on Mars, and thus NASA will be getting more research results. More research is going to be conducted in the Yellowknife Bay area of Mara, as well as Gale Crater’s central mound, Mount Sharp, which are both quite different areas from the other parts of Mars the rover has so far explored, such as the grey zone. These other areas will help in the planning phase of development for humans on Mars, something that was already covered.

While the impact of this discovery may seem small, it is in fact astronomical, as this is the first major step in the journey of extraterrestrial habitability. This discovery provides reassurance and motivation to the people behind programs pertaining to humans on Mars, such as the Mars One program, which hopes to send four people to Mars around 2024, and then two more people every year.

The 87th Oscars Red Carpet Review

0

As you all know, the 87th Academy Awards took place this Sunday. That obviously means there was a red carpet. So, being as qualified as I am, I will do my best to review the Oscars red carpet fashion for you.

Marion Cotillard

oscar1

Well…Marion Cotillard decided to come dressed as a piece of sushi or a restaurant napkin. That’s nice. I give her look ★out of 5.

Lupita Nyong’o

oscar2

I don’t understand how Lupita manages to nail her outfit at every event. She looks amazing covered in pearls. Her outfit deserves a perfect ★★★★★.

Anna Kendrick

oscar3

The Pitch Perfect actress looks stunning. ★★★★ for her.

Margot Robbie

oscar4

Wowza…Margot makes Lupita look shabby. Personally, I think she looks amazing and deserves a perfect ★★★★★.

David Oyelowo

oscar5

Not only did David Oyelowo deliver a great performance in Selma, he looks great in his red tux. ★★★★.

Lady Gaga

oscar6

Yikes, I’m guessing Gaga didn’t have enough time to wash the dishes and get ready for the Oscars. Needless to say, it’s an interesting looking. I’ll be generous and give her ★★.

Emma Stone and Jennifer Aniston

oscar7

How could you not love their outfits and this picture? They both look beautiful and deserve ★★★★★.

Jared Leto

oscar8

Jared Leto looks good, but I still don’t understand why he has an umbrella. I’m guessing fashion…right? ★★★★.

Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman

oscar9

Is that Jimmy Fallon I hear crying off in the distance? Both Urban and Kidman look great, but nothing really interesting is going on. So I give them ★★★.

Jennifer Lopez

oscar10

Finally, I saved best for last. JLo doesn’t look a day over twenty-five. She looks ravishing in her gown. A special ★★★★★★ for her!

Overall, the Oscars fashion was pretty good. Some people might have imitated their favourite Japanese snack or forgot to remove their gloves after cleaning the dishes. Despite that I give the Oscars ★★★★ for their red carpet fashion.

Overlooked songs by overrated artists

Overlooked songs by overrated artists

{Original Image}

When an artist first releases a single, they are forced to operate under the whims of the producer and/or record label in charge. This one song is played over and over again on the radio, in malls, essentially everywhere you go. There comes a point where you would actually rather stick nails in your ears than listen to that song one more time. Consequentially, most people begin basing all of their opinions about that artist on one song. Most people turn to bashing the lyrics, the tune, and extend their negative comments into that artist’s personal life and character.

We all have our preference of music, and I’m not saying that you have to like every song out there. Personally, I’m not a fan of country, EDM, R&B, hip-hop, reggae or metal, and I don’t think I ever will be. I have friends who hate musicals, jazz, pop, and would die if you made them listen to classical/orchestral music (despite my many pleas). Yet, there is a certain level of understanding for each person’s preferences. I’m not saying that there’s no judgement, but there is respect. And obviously, what I listen to isn’t limited to the genres I listed and I don’t vehemently refuse to listen to genres of songs that I don’t like. My taste in music completely varies, as does most people’s, I’m sure. In my opinion, the genre of music you like doesn’t necessarily say anything about you as a person. I listen to whatever speaks to me and I don’t listen to the music I find annoying.

Previously, I wouldn’t have given these “annoying” artists a second glance. Recently, I’ve tried stepping out of my musical closet and listening to the other songs off these artists’ album(s). Wanna guess what the result was? That’s right, I found songs that I actually liked. Shocking, I know.

Today, I’m going to share some songs by certain artists that showcase a different side to their talent, that’s not captured very well by the radio or other media.

{Meghan Trainor | Like I’m Gonna Lose You}

After the release of “All About That Bass,” people didn’t know how to react. Many thought that it was an empowering song for all body types, but others argued that it discriminated on smaller frames. Personally, I didn’t take offence in her song and found it extremely catchy. Although certain lyrics can be controversial, if you were to look at the entire song and analyze it critically, you would find that it addresses body image with an “I don’t give a care” attitude. It’s okay if you’re not a super-nerd and don’t analyze the lyrics to songs like I do, you don’t have to like that song. “Like I’m Gonna Lose You (feat. John Legend)” really showcases Meghan Trainor’s sweet voice and higher register. It doesn’t capture her modern do-wop/pop style, which people don’t seem to appreciate, but it’s still an awesome song.

{MAGIC! | Don’t Kill the Magic}

I may be misinterpreting the meaning, but the song “Rude” gave me a terrible first impression of MAGIC!. Neither “Don’t Kill the Magic” nor “Let Your Hair Down” corrected their bad image for me. I guess I’m just not a fan of their slightly Jamaican sound, nor their lyrics. “No Evil” is a bit more bearable for me, but I still can’t say that I like the band. Nonetheless, it has a catchy chorus and deals with an interesting topic. On a completely unrelated note, did you know that the monkey emojis are actually representative of the saying, “speak no evil, see no evil, and hear no evil”?

{Ariana Grande | My Everything}

I love Ariana Grande, and not just because she’s absolutely adorable or of the fact that she’s a vegan. From her days as Cat on Nickelodeon, I was cheering her on. Some people complain that she has a nasally voice or that she sounds weird when she sings, but I think her voice is beautiful and unique. People might have found “Problem” or “Bang Bang” annoying but “Love Me Harder” is receiving good feedback. “My Everything” is a heartfelt song about her grandpa and she shows off her lower range, which people seem to like more than the “high pitched screaming” in other songs.

{Shawn Mendes | Handwritten}

If you didn’t know, Shawn Mendes is a 16 year-old boy from Toronto. On the radio, his voice sounds a lot deeper, so only after listening to a few more of his songs have I realized how young he does actually sound. People are calling him a “little Ed Sheeran” and I agree that he does have a lot of potential. (Let’s hope he doesn’t turn out like Justin Bieber… Sorry, Beliebers.) His full album doesn’t get released until August of this year so I didn’t have much to go off of. After listening to “Life of the Party” for the millionth time, I was about to give up on him. After listening to “A Little Too Much,” I felt my heart break and immediately gained more respect for him. The content of his songs is genuine and tackles some emotional subject matter. I’m definitely looking forward to what the rest of the album has to offer.

{Carly Rae Jepsen | Kiss}

“Carly Rae Jepsen is so 2012,” is probably what you’re thinking right now. I know that she’s old news, but I feel like people still have a terrible impression of her. “Call Me Maybe” was one of the most annoying songs I’ve ever heard, I’ll admit, but her acoustic songs are amazing. The first album she ever released had mostly acoustic songs and her voice is so adorable. The weird synth-pop songs from her collection are what gets featured on the radio, and if she wants to do that I can’t stop her. But I do wish that she would do more of these slow and sweet songs. Don’t let Justin Bieber dissuade you, “Beautiful” is a lovely song and their voices actually compliment one another fairly well.

{Hozier | Hozier}

Alternative and indie music are two genres that are either a hit-or-miss for me. When I first started hearing “Take Me to Church” I wasn’t really sure what the song was about. Then, I looked up the lyrics and it turned out to be a super cool song. “Work Song” is just another example of the interesting lyrics that come from Hozier. In my opinion, most of the songs on his album follow the same progression and has that whole clapping thing going on in the background. Hozier has still got me a bit confused and I’m not entirely sure whether or not I like his music.

{Miley Cyrus | Bangerz}

After the world saw the new Miley in “We Can’t Stop” and then saw a bit too much of Miley in “Wrecking Ball,” there haven’t been many great opinions about her floating around. She’s migrated from her country roots into the dance-pop genre and no matter what she does in her spare time, her album isn’t bad. “Drive” has this fast-tempo background track but slow and edgy vocals. It may not by Hannah Montana, but it’s who Miley is now and, as she’s said many times, she doesn’t care if you like it or not.

{Sia | 1000 Forms of Fear}

In case you were wondering about why you can barely understand her sometimes, Sia is an Australian woman with quite a heavy accent. But she has this rich, deep, scratchy voice that isn’t really complimented by the style of music she produces. Although, I do have to say that “Chandelier” and “Elastic Heart” are both great songs. She doesn’t hit as many high notes in “Eye of the Needle,” so you can appreciate the richness of her voice.

{Nick Jonas | Nick Jonas}

I love the falsetto high notes that Nick Jonas hits in “Jealous” but I understand that some people may become agitated after listening to it for a long time. For some reason, most of these pop artists only do acoustic songs when they collaborate, so that’s why there are so many collaborations featured. Demi Lovato may be stealing a bit of the thunder in “Avalanche” but it also shows what Nick can do.

And that’s all! Maybe I will do a second part to this list, but I feel that this post has gone on long enough.

There are certain artists that I didn’t include on this list for a variety of different reasons. For example, both Nikki Minaj and Iggy Azalea’s albums are too explicit to be featured on a youth blog and Taylor Swift has made a major crackdown on copyright infringement. I’m not judging any of these artists and I still believe that they are all talented people, in their own way, who deserve a lot more credit than people give them.

I don’t think human beings will ever stop judging a book by its cover, but unless you actually read the book your judgement should stop at the cover. Don’t go attacking people when you are not a trained musician in every genre and when you don’t know what that person is like beyond his/her music. And especially, don’t shun those who do like the music you don’t. Rant over!

(P.S. When I say “overrated”, I mean it in the most endearing way possible. Personally, I like most of these artists, but I still get annoyed sometimes when their songs are so overplayed.)

Things only people with glasses will understand

0

Oh glasses, we can’t live with them, and we can’t live without them. They make life go from 480p to HD in a matter of seconds. Who doesn’t like that? No one, absolutely no one, but with great advantage, there has to be some disadvantages. Here are a couple of those pesky things that come with wearing glasses.

  • You have to choose between lying down on your side with glasses off or lying down regardless and risk permanently crooked glasses.
All my life’s struggles are over.
  • When your glasses get smudged and you try to clean them with your shirt but it’s not the right fabric and matters just get worse.

  • Sometimes your glasses just don’t work with your outfit. Betrayal of the utmost high.
I wish I could always be as on point as The Rock in this photo.
  • Glasses aren’t always the best thing to have on your face especially when you’re doing sports so you have to put something in your eyeball that puts you at risk for infection and the sensation of a dry Sahara dessert all so you can distinguish a tree from a very still person

  • They tend to get foggy really fast. Want to enjoy a nice hot beverage? Nope. Cooking? No. Simply breathing on a cold day? Hahaha… no.
I don’t know about you guys but I don’t look that serene when it happens.
  • You can’t wear glasses in the shower (unless you want them to fog up and leave you utterly useless regardless). So you might often mistake your conditioner for shampoo and your shampoo for conditioner.

  • When you don’t have them on and people do that thing where they put up a number of fingers in front of your face asking you how many they’re holding up.
This is how people see with/without glasses. It gets all blurry we don’t all of a sudden start seeing three heads.
  • You and Velma become one. Then after you don’t find them, you start having a heart attack because those things are really expensive!

  • Costumes are harder to pull off… usually
Yeah… maybe not..
Gotta love a good ol’ Waldo cosplay

  • They keep falling down your nose and you have to keep pulling a “nerd.”

  • Putting 3D glasses over your prescription glasses… glassesception….
One would have thought that there would be an accessible solution to this by now but ok, I guess not.

  • Needing to take them off because of the headache sneaking up on you.

Though wearing glasses has its baggage, I’m grateful for this invention because it’s nice having the opportunity to not bump into things and having permanent bruises.

Fairy tales: Disney endings vs Original endings

0

We all love fairy tales and their amazing happy endings, especially the Disney ones! The songs are so joyful and they don’t seem to have a care in the world. Or so we think! The endings of fairytales have been twisted by Disney, so that the movies would be a huge hit with the viewers (obviously!). However, we may or may not have heard about the real, deep, and dark endings that these stories really have!

1. The Little Mermaid

image source

Let’s begin with everyone’s favourite, the young and beautiful Ariel! Aah, the delightful and adventurous young lady that she is, Ariel wants to discover the human world. As she swims around with her colourful friends, showing off her sparkly mermaid tail, little does she know about the deep and dark future that awaits her. We all know what happens next, she falls in love with handsome Prince Eric and trades her voice for human legs with the nasty sea witch Ursula! Ariel, however, finally finds her happy ending, where she is turned to human, marries Eric, and lives happily ever after.

WRONG!

The real story goes as follows: The Little Mermaid exchanges her voice for her legs, but however, she would feel like she is walking on sharp knives, and would be in excruciating pain. She is unable to get her kiss from the prince, who marries someone else instead, and she throws herself into the sea. Instead of turning into foam like merfolk, she is turned into an angel.

2. Rapunzel (Tangled)

image source

Rapunzel is a cute little story about a girl who was kidnapped by a witch as a baby, and locked in a tower. It soon ends with her marrying a handsome prince and reuniting with her parents. This is the usual happy ending of all fairytales, BUT it is quite the opposite!

In the real story, Rapunzel is kidnapped as a baby, because her real father was caught stealing Rapunzels for his pregnant wife from the witch’s garden. As Rapunzel grows to be a beautiful damsel, she falls in love with the prince. The witch is livid when she finds out and chops off her long hair. I’m sure you know the famous Rapunzel catchphrase “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!” As the prince yells it out, the witch lets down the hair. The prince, thinking that it’s Rapunzel, begins to climb her hair as usual. As he nears the top, the witch lets go of the hair, and the prince falls into thorny bushes right near the foot of the tower. The bushes prick him in the eyes (ow!) and cause him to become blind.

3. Mulan

image source

Mulan is the story of a brave young girl who disguises herself as a boy to join the army for her father. She is soon one of the best and most trusted soldiers, and soon defeats the villains. She gets her happy ending with Shang, the hero of the story, as usual.

What actually happened is, the story of Mulan derived from a poem, Ballad of Mulan, ends with Fa Mulan returning home again, after she gets engaged to the general of the army. However, she is discovered to be a female, and the king wants to hire her as his mistress. Mulan does not want to have such a fate and she commits suicide.

4. Alice in Wonderland

image source

Now Alice in Wonderland is a lovely story about a young girl who enters an extraordinary world with all sorts of creatures. But did you know that the character of sweet little Alice, was based off of Alice Liddell, a girl that the author, Lewis Caroll, is suspected to have had pedophilic feelings for! Totally ruined your image of this story now, didn’t it?

Well here you go, I suppose I’ve ruined your childhood. The truth had to come out sometime!

What is it like to have synesthesia?

0

tumblr_n22ywzmejb1sjwwzso1_500

Colours are often associated with emotions — it’s not uncommon to feel “blue” or be “green with envy”. For a small percentage of the population, however, links between colours and emotions are just the beginning. Synesthesia, a neurological trait that is estimated to be present in 2-4% of people, is defined as “the production of a sense impression relating to one sense or part of the body by stimulation of another sense or part of the body”. To put it simply: the stimulation of one sense (such as touch, sight, or hearing) triggers an involuntary link to another sense.

So how can this affect a person’s everyday life? It’s impossible to account for all of the possible forms of synesthesia – if we take into account the five basic senses, there are already over twenty forms possible. In reality, synesthesia is much more complex. Imagine ordinal-linguistic personification synesthesia, where ordered sequences are associated with specific personalities. A person with this form of perception may find 7 to be a cruel number, or think that “H” is a whiny letter. Additionally, studies have shown that if a person has one form of synesthesia, they are 50% more likely to experience another form as well.

However, many people report associations such as days of the week with certain colours. This poses an interesting question; where does common association end and synesthesia begin? There a a few commonly-agreed upon criteria that can be helpful in clarifying the difference:

  1. Involuntary and automatic perception – one of the most telling symptoms is the involuntary, immediate nature of the phenomenon. Rather than using mental effort to make an association, it’s instantaneous.
  2. Consistent reactionary triggers – the same stimulation will occur time and time again, with no two different reactions ever occurring.
  3. Simple and objective perceptions – rather than a sound producing an image of a distant thunderstorm or triggering a memory, the visualisation is a specific colour or taste.
synesthesia-calendar-300x272
An artist’s interpretation of how a person with spatial-sequence synesthesia may experience the months of the year (source: SYNESTHESIATEST.ORG)

Personally, I experience what is known as grapheme-colour synesthesia. To me, all letters, numbers, and similar symbols have a distinct colour. For example, “K” is as inherently yellow as it is a letter that makes a “kuh” sound. Every time I look at a text message, a page in a book, or sequence of digits, I simultaneously view the characters in the colour they outwardly appear and an assigned colour of my perception. However, until about six months ago, I had no idea this way of viewing the world was at all unusual. This is actually quite common – many synesthetes report having been incredibly surprised when they realised their condition was not universal.

Overall, synesthesia is an intriguing condition that psychologists and neurologists alike are still struggling to understand. Personally, I can’t imagine life without it – losing my synesthesia would be like losing my sense of smell! Pharrell Williams puts it well; “If it was taken from me suddenly I’m not sure that I could make music,” he’s said on the topic of his (sound-colour) chromesthesia,  “I wouldn’t be able to keep up with it. I wouldn’t have a measure to understand.”

Are you interested in learning more about this diverse neurological phenomenon? I highly recommend this TED-Ed video lesson or this article from Medical Daily.

4 must watch TV shows

0

4. Grimm

imgres
image source

Grimm is a horror/action/mystery TV show that follows Nick Burkhardt, a Portland detective who lives a very “different” life. As a Grimm, he is able to see creatures that many cannot see. Many people in Portland are vesen, meaning that they are able to turn into different creatures. Nick, alongside his fellow detectives work to kill and protect the city from the bad vesen. I personally enjoy this TV show because unlike others, it has a unique storyline, characters, and an intense plot.

3. Deathnote

imgres-1
image source

Deathnote is an anime that follows Light Yagami, a brilliant highschool student that discovers a notebook with amazing power. By simply writing anyones name in this notebook, they will die. Deathnote was definitely one of the most amazing TV series I’ve seen. I’m not a very big fan of anime, but some of my friends had recommended this show to me and convinced me to watch it. Light, along with the two main antagonists, L & N, are all intelligent individuals. Light’s intention is to kill everyone who causes harm to society, or is a criminal. Although he believes he is doing good for society, many disagree. Since nobody knows who this anonymous killer is, they name him “Kira.” Throughout the series, both L and N try to figure out who “Kira” really is. This show is full of mystery, intensity, plot twists, and action, which is why I would highly recommend it to anyone, especially anime fans.

2. Arrow

imgres-2
image source

Arrow is an action/thriller TV show that follows the life of Oliver Queen, a man who acquires incredible abilities while stranded on an island for five years. While stranded on the island, he becomes stronger, learns how to fight, and becomes a master archer. He eventually makes it back to his home town, Starling City, where he fights to protect his citizens and family. I highly recommend Arrow to anyone, no matter how old you are. Each episode is filled with action, mystery, and intensity, and trust me, you wont be disappointed. The show contains dozens of plot twists, which makes it even more exciting. Its kind of like watching a movie on a weekly basis.

1. Suits

imgres-3
image source

And now for our number one spot, Suits. It was difficult choosing between Suits and Arrow, but Suits is just a little bit better in my opinion. This law/drama series follows the lives of Mike Ross and Harvey Specter, two brilliant lawyers, or should I say, lawyer. You see, the law firm that Harvey works for, Pearson Hardman, are conducting interviews when Mike Ross finds his way into the line up by accident from a drug deal gone bad. Harvey interviews him, only to discover that Mike has never attended and law school in his life and has no law degree whatsoever. However, he had studied the law for years, and knew everything there was to know about it. He decides to hire Mike, and the two work together and give their clients the best service possible. This show is one of the highest rated on both Tv.com and IMDb. It has received positive reviews from many, and I would highly recommend watching this show.

Vaccines: the Cure or the Disease?

0

In 2011, 123 countries immunized over 90% of infants against measles. Between 2000 and 2011, vaccination resulted in a 71% drop in measles related deaths worldwide, and yet 18% of Americans believe vaccines cause autism, and 30% are undecided. While vaccines shouldn’t be mandatory, because they at the end of the day it is the family’s choice, they should definitely be encouraged and easily provided to everyone. There is insurmountable proof and reasoning that vaccines are beneficial to society, which are evident through three main contentions. These are the economic benefits, the proven health benefits, and the myths stemming from falsified articles.

One of the biggest misconceptions about vaccines that we know, but don’t talk about, is how expensive they are. Many people think that they cost a lot of money and it will cause taxes to skyrocket, but vaccines have proven to save money, and lives, in the long run, especially for developing countries. Studies by UNICEF have shown that scaling vaccines in the world’s 72 poorest countries could save 6.4 million lives and avert $6.2 billion in treatment costs and $145 billion in productivity losses. Furthermore, one dose of diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vaccine costs around 20¢, and a life-saving dose of measles-vaccine costs a quarter. Imagine, the cost to save your life could be the change in your couch. Everyone can afford, and should, give up a quarter to increase the likelihood of survival.

More Vaccines=Less Death
More Vaccines=Less Death

This proves how many lives vaccines can save, and considering a vaccine costs about a quarter, it also shows for how cheap. Medically, vaccines save lives, as evident by the graph above. The most important thing to note it that while many people in first world countries are vaccinated, many children in third world and developing countries aren’t, and they are the people most at risk.

Vaccines have been instrumental in eradicating smallpox and nearly eradicating polio. In North America, Europe, and most developed countries, over 90% of children are vaccinated with DTP3. However, in developing countries, 1 in 5 children are not vaccinated and are defenceless against life threatening diseases. At one time 80% of children in Japan were getting vaccinated for the whooping cough, and that year less than 400 cases were recorded. In five years, rumours spread that the vaccine was not needed, and less than 10% of kids were vaccinated. That year, over 13,000 cases occurred.

Vaccines have proven to be beneficial from a medical standpoint, and many of the studies that say otherwise have been false. One of the most common misconceptions is that vaccines cause autism. One of the biggest stepping-stones in support of this myth is a falsified study published in 1998 in a newspaper known as The Lancet. In this article, disgraced doctor Andrew Wakefield produced a fraudulent paper that was based on studies between vaccines and autism. It was later found out that Andrew had not acted in the mentally challenged patients best wishes, and is now charged with three dozen charges, a dozen involving abuse of mentally challenged children. This is just one of the many falsified articles that were created due to profit motive, a similar one creating a connection between vaccines and bowel inflammatory disease.

While there are numerous benefits to vaccines, there are some downsides, and it’s morally unjust to make flu shots mandatory, because individuals have their own philosophical and religious perspectives on flu shots. However, they should definitely be encouraged and be provided free of charge by the government to eradicate myths, as well as because of the medical and economic benefits.

YYC Restaurant Review: Big Fish

Calgary has a rich culture of delicious local restaurants and Big Fish (1112 Edmonton Trail NE) is no exception to that. Delicious seafood paired with a casual yet upscale atmosphere and friendly service made for a highly enjoyable experience.

Our mussels were gone as fast as they came.

My first impression was that the building itself was pleasantly warm, which made my experience that much better because I get cold really easily so I was able to actually take my jacket off. Secondly, as much as I’m a fan of ambient lighting, I do think that Big Fish took it a little bit too seriously. It was too dark and even another candle per table could have made it that much better. This was mostly problematic for when I was taking pictures, but wasn’t a big deal when I was eating. During the day, the big windows would make it nice and bright but at night it was too dark inside and a little brightening up would have made it better.

Although the lighting was not ideal for pictures, at least you can really see the aioli, which was really creamy and paired really well with the spring rolls.

Our server was very pleasant and didn’t mind that I took a really long time to decide what I wanted (I’m really indecisive, okay!), not to mention was very accommodating when I asked to see the menu again so I could write down what we ate. Overall, the service was everything I could have asked for and no less.

The menu had a nice variety of seafood, as well as a small selection of dishes which would appeal to people who don’t eat/enjoy seafood as much. As starters, I had mussels and Crab Bacon Potato Smoked Cheddar Spring Rolls (which were from the daily specials from what I recall). The mussels were really juicy, not too salty and the white wine in which they were steamed made for great bread dipping. On the other hand, the spring rolls were quite unconventional, but were a breath of fresh air. You can never go wrong with bacon.

My salmon was exceptional, the veggies it was paired with were well cooked; not too firm, not too soft and oh my, was the polenta superior.

As for my main entrée, I had the seared Wild Salmon which was served on crispy polenta with flat leaf parsley lobster beurre and sturgeon caviar. The salmon was very tender and well-seasoned, but there was a bit too much lobster beurre, which made the whole dish a bit saltier than I would have liked. The polenta was crispy on the outside and soft and delicious on the inside, which I adored. Finally, I was expecting to be able to see the caviar, but after further inquiry, I found out that it was placed around the dish and I just couldn’t see it. Overall, my main course was very good.

For dessert, I caved in to my sweet tooth and ordered Maple Bourbon Pecan Pie. Words cannot even begin to describe just how delicious it was. The crust was light and flaky, the pecan filling was very sweet, but not too sweet and the Vanilla bean mousse on top cut the sweetness very nicely. If I wasn’t so full, I may have gone for another helping.

It makes my mouth water even looking at it again.

Although it was a more expensive meal, the portions were very filling and did not leave any room for more. It wasn’t like one of those pretentious fancy restaurants where you pay an arm and a leg and get only enough to feed a small child. I was not the person paying, but had I been the one with the chequebook, I would not have had a problem with what I would have had to pay considering the quality and quantity of what I was served.

All in all, Big Fish was a big hit. I really like seafood and I enjoyed every bit of my meal, even if there were some minor details I may have changed. I would wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant to anyone wishing to try a local place serving up some pretty killer  seafood. Visit their website here to see preview the menu and make bookings.

Becoming ambidextrous

0

For a couple of years now, there have been many things that I’ve wanted try, but due to procrastination I don’t always have the time to do them. One of those things is to become ambidextrous. Now, you’d probably be wondering at this point, “why would this guy want to learn how to ambidextrous, doesn’t he have a life?”. You see, there are several reasons why I want to become ambidextrous, here is a couple:

  1. Of course we all know that the number one reason for doing this is to look cool.
  2. Another reason is let’s say I break my arm. I wouldn’t want to be incapacitated for months while it heals. So, it is best to use both hands equally in case of such an emergency.
  3. This last point doesn’t really apply to me, but if you’re doing a physically tiring job, when one arm gets tired, you can switch to the other, since it’s just as good at the job as the other.

So, here are some ways to become ambidextrous:

1. Start writing and drawing with both hands at the same time

Screen Shot 2015-02-16 at 12.09.54 PMPhoto

All you need is just a paper and a pencil and just start drawing butterflies, vases, symmetrical objects, letters, shapes, and whatever you want. Of course, your writing/drawing will be horrible at first, but take it slow and it’ll eventually get better.

2. Take it really slow and just write with only your opposite hand

Here are my practice sheets:

It is definitely possible to write with your non-dominant hand and trust me when I say it takes a lot of practice and determination. Everyday, I’ve been writing out the alphabet using my non-dominant hand (left hand) in lower case and uppercase. And at first, it was shaky and the letters weren’t as neat as with my other hand. However, since I’ve been practicing for a while now, my writing has gotten a bit better.

Write with your good hand in the mirror

I haven’t really tried this method before, but apparently doing this gives a clear visual cue and helps the brain picture the same action for the non-dominant hand.

I’m still currently in the process of becoming ambidextrous, but you want to join me in my endeavour, then practice these techniques daily for a couple of months. In no time, you’ll be writing very fluently in your non-dominant hand. Lastly, as you’re practicing, use a pen that easily flows and some quality paper to make this experience better.
