I don’t know about you, but if I received a gift that helped others, I would feel way less guilty for making you spend money on me. As Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory says, “Oh, Penny. I know you think you are being generous, but the foundation of gift giving is reciprocity. You haven’t given me a gift. You’ve given me an obligation. The essence of the custom is that I now have to go out and purchase for you a gift of commensurate value and representing the same perceived level of friendship as that represented by the gift you’ve given me.” So if you feel like your friendship is more than just giving back some amount of money in the form of an item, then help someone else in the meantime by purchasing that said item!
