What comes to mind when you think about Calgary? Sure, we have a booming oil and gas industry and host the annual Calgary Stampede, but that only touches the surface of what our city has to offer. From numerous productions of plays and ballets to art exhibits featuring works by Dali and Turner, the arts are deeply embedded in our culture, and that was exactly what was being celebrated at the Holt Renfrew Lock into Paris Fashion Show. As a kick-off and benefit event for the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra’s J’amie Paris Festival (more information on their website here), the classy event boasted talent from all sectors. Fashion models, patisseries, television personalities, CEOs, and world renowned musicians all made their presence at the show. Fellow blogger and fashion editor Ailin and I also graced the venue, DSLRs in hand, to capture the festivities of the night.
The prestigious fashion show was hosted at Devonian Gardens, everyone’s favourite indoor park. With it’s relaxing koi ponds, fountains, and million-dollar vegetation, the park was transformed into a fashion hub by the makeshift runway and bright purple lighting that subsequently caused us to look like purple smurfs in all our selfies. The set-up was evocative of a humble French cafe; a very glamorous one.
Attendees also got a taste of Paris from the base of Eiffel Tower, where us photographers camped out during the fashion show to get the best snapshots of the runway styles.
The event was hosted by Jason and Aly, commonly known as The Style Guys, and introduced by the committee chair of the event, Cynthia Moore. At the door, CPO musicians welcomed people at the coat check with their abundant repertoire, and later complimented the runway with original Parisian-style compositions by assistant concertmaster Donovan Seidle. Internationally recognized Russian pianist Samson Tsoy also made an appearance, stunning audiences with his speedy and eloquent finger work.
What’s a fun night without food? Thankfully, the event had tons of sweet desserts and savory appetizers from the top chefs in the city. Ailin and I went on to sample delicious desserts made by award-winning Belgian patisserie Manuel Latruwe, who was very welcoming and friendly. If you ever happen upon a sweet tooth, they are housed at 1333 – 1 Street SE — in the same building as Bernard Callebaut. Keep your eye out for their savoury holiday macaron collection, featuring fan-favourites such as maple bacon, fois gras/onion chutney, and jalapeno/brie cheese.
Next up, we visited Oil & Vinegar‘s booth, where we munched on fresh croutons dipped in our choice of delicious oils infused with herbs and spices available from their two Calgary venues. I recommend giving their olive oil with chilli pepper a try in your next dish.
These delicious chocolate macarons can be found at Monplaisir Delicacies, located in The CORE.
Before we left and called it a night, we were given these cute French macaron duos; also from Monplaisir Delicacies, that felt much too pretty to eat (though I can affirm that they were amazing and appetizing).
The Lock into Paris fashion show was an unforgettable night filled with art, music, and food.
Special thanks to the CPO for Ailin and I’s tickets and to event organizers for their tremendous success in providing an elegant and sophisticated experience for all.
