Flavours of the YYC food trucks

IMAG0419To put it simply, my family and I are food truck obsessed. So when two food truck events were happening in one weekend, of course we were there for both of them. On Sept 6 was the 2nd Annual Sundown Chowdown at the Calgary Farmers’ Market. The event featured various food trucks along with entertainment and the Calgary Food Bloggers Bake Sale! Second was Taste the Trucks III, which was actually a two day event running from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday in East Village.

Obviously, there’s no sane way to try every food truck in one weekend, but with the help of my parents, I sampled quite a few culinary concoctions from quite a few various trucks.

Farm GirlsCreamy old cheddar, truffle & butternut squash MAC & CHEESE!

Cheese is one of my obsessions. And I absolutely adore squash. Oh, and there was a bacon topping too. And it was mac and cheese. So I went crazy over this. Essentially, it was a little box of gourmet goodness. The pasta was those spirally-tube things rather than the average elbow macaroni, and the texture was given an extra kick because of all the toppings. Yummm.

Cheezy Bizness:  Aloha Arkansas (In-truck made pulled pork with pineapple and smoked cheddar)

As you learned above, cheese holds a special place in my heart. So it was natural that I had another cheese-dominated entree. Cheezy Bizness is the king of grilled cheese, and they definitely do it right. The perfectly-grilled bread and oozing melted cheese is complimented perfectly by the tangy pulled pork and pineapple. All in all, a taste sensation.

Jane Bond Mongolian Grill: Three sliders, and mango bruschetta

This one was my mom’s order, and so I actually didn’t try any of the sliders. But I will say that they looked really good from head to toe (even the buns seemed special and delicious). However, I did steal some of the mango bruschetta. The addition of sweetness and fruitiness to the average bruschetta was much appreciated by me, so it was a hit, although a bit spicier than I’d prefer.

SteakOut: Steak bites!

I’ll be honest here, I was skeptic about just bites of steak. My dad got this because he is really steak-obsessed, and I ended up trying a bite. The flavour was intense, and much more interesting than just biting into your normal hunk of steak. Smoky, sweet, perfect.

Perogy BoyzTex-mex perogies (8 perogies, sausage, cheese, black bean/corn salsa)

There is something about mashed potatoes encased in dough and topped with cheese that is way too good to be true. Luckily, Perogy Boyz is here to serve up this dish from heaven. Especially when it’s raining and not-so-warm outside, eight chewy and soft and doughy perogies sure hit the spot. Many different varieties were offered, and I chose the new addition, Tex-mex, which meant I also ate sausage and black bean/corn salsa. Oh so good 🙂

Fiasco GelatoThree flavours in one large: bananimal cracker, bourbon vanilla bean, and dark chocolate caramel sea salt

Um, this was gelato. The Italian version of ice cream. How could it not be insanely, phenomenally good? The flavours were all rich and obviously authentic, and you could definitely tell that this was gourmet frozen goodness.
