Finding Your Passion (Your Passion)

As a child growing up in a household of immigrant parents, I often cannot help but notice the ideal jobs that are expected for people to do when they grow up. I am sure many can relate to this when I say many career choices that people say they want in life are either being a doctor, lawyer, or engineer as they want the most job stability. While some of these may be true and people do want to become these things, I often wonder if people are only saying this to meet other’s expectations. Maybe, they have other passions they would rather be pursuing. Or maybe, they still do not know. For the longest time, I was not sure about what my passions were, in fact, I am still making sure I enjoy my passions such as social issues or studying neuroscience. I always feel fortunate that my parents have given me the opportunity to look at different things. I have been lucky enough to experience new things, get inspired by meeting new people, and do different hobbies to find the things I am passionate about.

Significance

I remember sitting in my career and life management class in school and watching this TEDx talk on asking teens what they want to do in life. I remember hearing that many do not want to say what they would rather be doing if they did not want to become a doctor, lawyer, or engineer. This is due to the many insecurities young adolescence has. But also, some people still do not know what their passions are. Many are afraid of what people think. I always hear from many that in order to have a successful career in anything, passion is essential. (Keep in mind, you can have more than one) It motivates us. It gives more meaning to life. It helps us enjoy the life we live. It helps us motivate ourselves in school to learn more. I agree with all of this; however, where do we find it?  Finding something you love will not only open doors to you, but it helps us grow and learn more about ourselves.  Here are some steps I have found most helpful on my journey to discovering passions:

1. Pay Attention to Your Interests

This can be anything! If you remove concerns about what others think, there is an infinite list of interests! What are some experiences you have loved? What are some things you have disliked? Knowing what interests you or bores you can help you get in the direction of finding your passion. The best part is, it does not even have to be academic! It can be anything! From skiing outside to traveling across the world, or even spending time with young children, to even stargazing at night! If these experiences get you excited, and you feel a thrill, you might be closer to finding a passion! (Reminder: these things change as we are constantly growing.)

“Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excited you.” -Oprah Winfrey

2. Try Different Things

Likewise, after thinking about the interests you may have, go out and try them. You only know for sure you love something by actually doing it. This is because our mind is full of ideas, and what you thought was for you may not be for you. Remember to practice these things as well, as things do not come right away. Actively trying things also helps us come up with reasons why we do the things we do. Note: These things do not all have to be right away, rushing things can only make you feel more unsure and puzzled. Instead, try things in moderation and listen to yourself! Become adventurous and try new experiences, even meeting new people can spark passion. I have had the pleasure of meeting many people in my life that led me to become passionate about issues that made me want to create change.

3. Do these things for yourself

Yes, I know, this does sound cliché; however, as the days pass, I see it is true. By doing something for yourself, you are more likely to be more passionate about it as it makes you feel happier. Keep in mind, I did not say do not listen to the important people in your life. In fact, taking advice from parents, friends, or other adults can often give you new perspectives on things. I have often found myself looking at my decisions more closely after chatting with people close to me. However, ensure that the advice you have been given about passions makes you feel content and happy. If you do something for others, you are meeting their expectation; however, it will not feel as meaningful. By doing something for yourself, you not only feel more purposeful, but you are also more likely to be successful at it! You will not always be successful at things right away, but you will have more motivation to continue growing in something you love!

In the End

If you already have passions, try applying them to your life and see how you can use them to influence your surrounding environment. How can you use your passions to help the world around you? How can you apply your passions to life at school as education continues?  Remember, education is a vital part of helping you understand the large world we live in. Education will help grow your passions. If you are still finding them, do not give up! It takes a different amount of time for everyone and does not limit yourself! I strongly believe that if we find things we enjoy, we can use them to influence others! It is always okay to have more than one as it gives you more options in case you want to change. By finding more things you are good at or want to get better at, you are helping yourself grow and find success! I hope these tips helped you!
