I could say I'm just another YAA contributor, but you don't want to underestimate the leadership power of all my fellow youth. From blogging, I've learned that writing is great, but it's versatility can only come when it provokes discussion and inquiry, and that's what we can collectively do best.
I want to rather get to know your insights, so always feel free to shoot me comments here and there.
The horror story of Wentao Li trying to fold origami flowers at a Youth Volunteer Corps Steering Committee meeting… LUCKILY, YOU DON’T HAVE TO ENDURE THOUGH THAT! Watch this tutorial and make interesting blossoming lotuses. 🙂 The music is quite soft and soothing too.
Where does art take YOU? Where is public art taking Calgary? Do you think by 2021 that you will think of Calgary as a beautiful city? 1% of the funding for our capital infrastructure projects over $1 Million is devoted to providing a Public Art showcase on that project or around Calgary according to current policy. That…
Note: read my article on what the hunger dinner is before reading this one. 🙂 The Hunger Dinner was very inspirational, I would say. No, that sounds a bit too generalized. We’ve finished promoting this event and the fruits have blossomed! How do I start? F0od perhaps? Talk about differences there. Sharing is caring, though. Alice was…
“17,500 Calgarians are living below the current ‘living wage’..” “1 in 3 Children are under poverty in Alberta’s First Nations’ communities….” “Poverty affects 1 in 5 children under the age of 15 in Calgary..” Statistics on a report matter; yet so does your hands-on experience of eating what can be often deemed “third-world food” by…
Since 2002, March has been designated the “Youth Science Month“. Here’s my first exception to the name of this series! (But how can you manage to be totally Science-y just in a short day?) Supported by many community leaders, such as our MPs, MLAs, councillors, and other figures, March was chosen for this purpose as…
I just learned about Surrealism in Art class not too long ago, but I’ve never seen surreal photography like this: Hmm, even the New York Times is interested in knowing this guy. Leonid Tishkov is a Russian artist who has taken many artistic photographs of himself and the moon in seemingly impossible positions, such as in…
This building fools you: A Wish‘s creativity stands out amongst the shops on 8th Street SW, however. When you walk in, the impression you get makes this place almost a bit too sparkling new for this block and the apartment building it is in. The food and drinks they offer are a mix of both Western and Asian…
We often hear about inspirational stories of patients overcoming this sickness through media. This twist in life tears up those who feel it personally. Medically, this word refers to a group of diseases that can be traced to abnormal cell growth. The sudden diagnosis may seem crippling at first for an adult, let alone a child or…
How I wish I were in Greece right now instead of Calgary. *Frowns* I guess it’s fine if I get a real nice taste of their food and culture somewhere. *Smiles*…Except I won’t get the amazing vacation feeling. *Frowns again* My complaints out of boredom aside (I really have to stop daydreaming), this was my…
The move is on to empower people about seniors and poverty in Calgary. In a country with a well-equipped social welfare system, this trend towards even higher numbers of low-income seniors should not be an issue here. We’ve looked at the surface of this issue, questions I raised when I began to learn about this issue, but we’ve also…
Update (01/28) – The stories are now released and you can read them and the constellation’s report here. We are taught to be resilient when we face hardships; we keep going through difficult challenges with optimism—in reality, many seniors who struggle with poverty are willing to take steps to improve their well-being. But many of the…
To many, the ideal life of retired seniors is to become snowbirds and enjoy living a joyful life on pensions and savings. Now free of job commitments and often relieved of mortgages and loans, many seniors pursue the dream life, having a large family who cherish their presence and embracing happiness collected over many years.…
By now I’m pretty sure you know who that man is. He’s known as the “father of confederation”, after all. Wait, why are we bringing him up? No, I don’t mean to make youthareawesome.com seem like your Social Studies classroom if you really hate history. There’s a reason why we’re bringing up such an important…
12 Minutes from west Calgary to downtown? That’s what Transit says in their West LRT advertising as it finally opened on December 10th. I will become a frequent user of this line as I live in this area of the city, so I’m very excited about the opening. Does the travel times actually…
Young people and seniors are on opposite ends of the age spectrum—one is often filled with endless hope, the other filled with a breadth of experience. Many of our futuristic dreams eventually translate to memories that we cherish when we retire. Holidays are meaningful for building stronger relationships between the elders and the kids in…
