What are migraines?

Migraines are moderate to severe headaches that usually affect a certain area on the head. The headaches usually last from an hour to 2-3 days may include nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and noises. As a fellow migraine sufferer, I often feel dizzy and a throbbing pain on the right side of my head that usually only lasts a few hours.

Signs and Symptoms

If you are experiencing a migraine or frequently suffer from migraines, you may go through

– coloured spots in vision

– dizziness/spinning feeling

– sensitive to light/noise/smells

Causes

Migraine triggers are different for everyone or it may be the result of genetics. If a family member suffers from migraines, it is possible that you could experience a migraine as well. When I suffer from a migraine (which is not often), it is generally when I am feeling stressed.

Treatment

For headaches and migraines alike, I find that lying down in a quiet, dark space helps relieve the pain. If I’m in class and I have a migraine or headache, I like to drink a pain reliever like Advil or Tylenol and go to the washroom to splash some water on my face. For the most part, this lessens the severity of the headache/migraine and helps me stay focused in class.
