With the summer behind us and volleyball/basketball seasons starting soon, there’s one sport that is left mostly alone: cross-country running. It is an awesome sport that has many advantages. For one, it is a great way to get back into shape after a lazy summer, while at the same time improving your cardiovascular endurance for other sports improving your performance. Other advantages include you get to meet other athletes from around Calgary and when it gets down to it, running can be fun.

Tips for new runners:
1. Keep a steady pace. Often a steady pace will get you ahead of those who either go too fast at the beginning and then slow down near the finish, or those who go slow at the start and speed up too late – when the competition is far ahead of you.
2. Always fight the voice inside your head telling you to slow down or give up.
3. Don’t give up. Really cheesy and cliché but if you keep trying hard you will eventually make good progress.

The sport of the cross-country running is arguably the oldest sport alive containing excitement, always a challenge, and lots of fun. For those of you wanting to get some encouragement watch NIKE adds, they’ll get you moving for sure!
