Last Tuesday, I had the pleasure of attending the annual Summer Hiring Fair at the Big Four Building at Stampede Park. It was a surprisingly large event, with almost 100 employers from all around Calgary and many times that amount of youth attending.
For anyone interested in attending next year, here are some tips and tricks to success at the fair (from the fair pamphlet).
How to network with employers – your strategy
- Put away your cell phone and music.
- Approach employers alone, not in groups
- Take your time
- Look at the list of employers and determine which booths you’d like to visit
- Collection company information for further research
Talking to employers
- Make eye contact
- Introduce yourself
- Show an interest in the employer or job opportunities
- Highlight your skills and interests
- Determine if the job is a fit for you
- Avoid asking about salary right away. Try to find out more about the position first.
- Submit your resume to the organizations that interest you.
- Thank your employer for their time.
Questions to ask employers
- What positions are available?
- Are the positions you have full-time, part-time, permanent or temporary?
- What skills are considered most useful for this position?
- How can I get in touch with you? What’s your contact info?
- When can I expect to hear from you?
