Celebrated by over two billion people around the world, Ramadan marks the holiest month of the year for Muslims. Starting March 10th 2024, Muslims worldwide eagerly began this sacred month and will end the month on April 9th.
As the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan provides Muslims time for spiritual reflection, devotion, self-discipline, and community. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, during which Muslims fast from dawn until sunset. It commemorates the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, fundamental acts of worship that shape a Muslim’s life. The fast involves abstaining from food, drink, smoking, until sunset. It is not merely about refraining from food and drink but as well as from negative thoughts, actions, and behaviours.
For Muslims, Ramadan is an opportunity for them to deepen their connection with Allah (God) through increased prayer, recitation of the Quran, and acts of charity. Muslims believe that during Ramadan, the gates of heaven are open, and the gates of hell are closed, making it a perfect time for seeking forgiveness and to recieve blessings.
Overall, contrary to popular belief, Ramadan is more than just abstaining from food and drink; it is a time of spiritual and self-improvement. Through fasting and prayer, Muslims strive to strengthen their relationship with Allah (God) and embody and implement positive values in their lives.
