The benefits of volunteering abroad

Do you have someplace in the world you’re dying to visit, but don’t want your parents to be there?

Exotic places like:

  • Tanzania
  • Ghana
  • Kenya
  • Nepal
  • Thailand
  • Peru

Why not use a volunteer opportunity to travel and help others at the same time?

There are many organizations that organize such volunteer trips for High School Students. They vary from the locations and time period to the tasks and duties you do, such as marine conservation, medicine, or education.

Although these trips can be a bit pricy, if you start planning soon, you may be able to fundraise your trip expenses rather than putting the burden on your parents.

My friend and I have been planning to volunteer at Tanzania as medical assistants this summer. We’ve finally convinced our parents, but the only thing stopping us from going is our trip funding. Even so, we’re trying as hard as we can to raise enough funds for our trip.

So, it might be too late for this summer, but you definitely have time to plan for a trip during winter break, spring break, or even summer break of next year! A good plan is required for successful fundraisers.

Personally, I think this is a great opportunity. Not only will you be able to explore the world, and experience different cultures, but also help the developing world.

When you come back home, you’ll be able to share your wonderful experiences with your friends and family. Tell them about the never-endingĀ savannasĀ in Kenya, clear blue oceans in Thailand, or the long Great Wall of China.

Not only will you learn from these experiences, but you’ll also bring another culture back to Calgary by sharing through Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, your blog (like this one!) or at school.
