I’m sure you have all heard of Tchaikovsky’s “Sugar Plum Fairy” before, whether you’re an avid fan of his pieces, or this piece in particular was used as background music for a movie or television show you’ve watched. It’s whimsical and light – but if you listened to it, would you be able to identify the instruments used? From an elementary school music class using xylophones, to skilled bell-wielders? I challenge you to close your eyes and listen to the following YouTube video. What kind of instrument does it sound like? (And before you say “glass harp,” take into consideration what a glass harp is. No, it’s not a harp made out of glass, but is a more “elegant” term used to describe the use of a more “everyday item” that can be used to play music).

Surprised? I was astounded by the complexity of this art. It must be hard to know where each cup is, but to be able to play in unison with another individual? Props to this Polish couple on this beautiful piece of work. Next time it’s raining out – grab a couple of wine glasses from your cupboards, and try it out!
