Tips for a productive day: morning routines that set for success

Benjamin Franklin wakes up at 5 AM. 

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, and Robert Iger, CEO of Disney, rise as early as 4:30 AM. 

In a survey answered by successful CEOs, 37% of all respondents report that they wake up at 6 AM or earlier; 27% report that they rise at 5 AM or earlier, and around 5% even said they get up at 4 AM or earlier.

We cannot assert that these CEOs waking up early in the morning is a key factor determining their success in their careers. It is very probable that accomplished individuals such as Tim Cook wake up early to enjoy some quiet, private time uninterrupted by their busy business schedules of endless meetings and work. However, at least one important thing we can take away from these morning habits of successful individuals is how a well-planned and executed morning routine can set out productivity and success throughout the day.

Of course, not everyone can remain energetic and not sleep-deprived getting up at 4 AM and only receiving 5 or 6 hours of sleep. Suppose, as most of us are still students who need to routinely arrive at school, we need to leave the house for school at 7:30 AM. In this case, even getting up an hour before starting the entire day – waking up at 6:30 AM – can leave you with plenty of time for personal routines. For instance, having some moderate exercise in the morning will effectively “clear up” your brain, improving “cognition and memory during the day,” according to research from the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Even if it is simply a walk around one’s neighbourhood, this exercise is still setting up a positive mindset for you to carry throughout the entire day.

Other than exercising, there are numerous tasks that you can complete in a morning routine. For instance, waking up fresh in the morning leaves you the time to carefully plan out the to-do list for the day. Organizing tasks and prioritizing some assignments opens an excellent start to a productive day, as it allows one to be aware of the goals and important jobs to be completed.

Sometimes we complain about a rush morning – waking up 5 minutes before the time we need to leave the house and immediately entering into panic mode, skipping breakfast as a result. A healthy breakfast is immensely important for not only one’s physical well-being but also a positive start to the day. The input of food – and the glucose inside our food – provides essential energy for our body to function; these nutrients effectively boost your ability to concentrate on work or school.

It is understandable that we still cannot get out of that comfy, warm bed at 6:30 AM even if we learn the numerous benefits of waking up early. (I do that! – setting an alarm at 6:00 AM and ending up turning it off when it rings to sleep until the last minute) Start with waking up 15 minutes earlier than your usual time; after two weeks, push the alarm 15 minutes earlier. Eventually, the biological clock within our bodies will be accustomed to earlier morning routines.
