In the past few years, Sled Island has introduced an all-ages wristband for $50, which lets you into shows that are friendly and safe for all youth. You can still get wristbands here and read more about the festival here.
This year there will be over 100+ bands and artists who will be spread over 30 venues downtown. Here are some of my picks for this year’s Sled Islands of must-see bands and go-to shows. Check out the rest of the schedule here.
Wednesday, June 20
Go see CFCF and Timber Timbre from 8:15 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. at Theatre Junction Grand, and let their great instrumentals amaze you.
CFCF – You Hear Colours – CFCF is an electronic artist based out of Montreal.
Timber Timbre – Demon Host – Timber Timbre are a Canadian folk music brand, who’s sound has been described as “an aesthetic rooted in swampy, ragged blues.”
If you’re not a fan of electronic and folk music, you can head to the National Music Centre and see some local Calgary rappers like Rap X, Chief Navaho, Ricca Razor Sharp, and the infamous Dragon Fli Empire.
Dragon Fli Empire – Mount Pleasant – DFE is a Calgarian hip hop duo formed in 2002 inspired by classic hip hop beats matched with down to earth, insightful lyrics.
Thursday, June 21
Start your night off by checking out The You Are Minez at the New Black Centre before heading to catch CFCF (yes, another time! they’re that good) with Tim Hecker at Hillhurst United Church.
The You Are Minez – Bird Circle – The You Are Minez are a groove rock band featuring three youth members, including one who was featured in FFWD magazine last month (seriously, check out this article).
Tim Hecker – The Piano Drop – Tim Hecker is another electronic recording artist from Montreal
Or head to the East Village Block Party and check out some great djs like HUMANS or Flosstradamus.
