Now, I don’t mean to be biased, but luckily I don’t have to be because the facts are clear. Sir Winston Churchill High School has long been associated with academic excellence and pristige. When considering the factors that make up SWC, its reputation seems to just barely do it justice.
Here are a few of the reasons why SWC Bulldogs are the top dogs:
- SWC ranked as Calgary’s top public high school for the 2008/2009 school year in Fraser Institute’s Report Card on Alberta’s High Schools 2010
- SWC is recognized nationally for math, science, debate and computing honours
- In the 2009/2010 school year, SWC students achieved the highest final mark average in the CBE of 4 of 10 Diploma Exams, and 63 individual marks of 100% were awarded to students on Diploma Exams
- A very strong athletic department (we won six City Championships in the 2010/2011 school year)
- Our academic reputation and offering of the International Baccalaureate program make us a highly coveted choice for out-of-district students
- We offer Spanish, French, Chinese and German second language classes – oh, les choix!
- Fabulous Theatre and Musical Theatre programs – in the past some of our Drama 30 students have presented their pieces at the Calgary Drama Festival!
- A variety of extremely talented bands through which to develop your musical skills
- A vast assortment of clubs, including Model United Nations, Knitting, Muslim Prayer, Table Tennis, Climbing, and our top notch Youth Volunteer Corps club (SWC’s students make up over half of Youth Central’s total volunteers in schools each year)
- Our large student body (2000+ students) makes finding friends one of the most easiest aspects of high school
- A wonderful counselling department has its home at SWC, and offers everything from learning more about scholarships and universities to careers and work experience
- We have an awesome weight/fitness room where students can get their workout on for free
- An incredibly convenient location (across the street from a mall equipped with a full food court, down the street from Mac’s and an über popular bubble tea café, up the street from Starbucks and The Real Canadian Bagel, and only two minutes from the Dalhousie train station)
So when thinking of Calgary’s “best high schools,” don’t forget to put Churchill firmly as first on the list.

Last year I believe 97 students got 100% on either their final grade or diploma exam. We are right next to Awesome Pizza, Mac’s, and Subway. Many of our students go on to pursue their education at Ivy league schools or their international equivalent. Our rugby team is phenomenal. We have a Starcraft club (heck yea).
I went by the stats set out in a CBE report for two years ago; it’s cool that we’ve improved since then!
And we have a Starcraft club?! I didn’t know that! Haha.
I agree 100% with this post, because it’s absolutely true. The facts speak for themselves. Also, don’t forget some of the famous churchill graduates in recent years- Sam Effah, a champion track runner who ran with Usain Bolt, and Raghav, a singer/songwriter best known for hits such as “fire” and “so much.” Of course, there are many more to this list. Overall, Churchill is a force to be reckoned with. Also don’t forget our cross-country team as well, we won the intermediate boys championship banner last year with just 5 males in our group.
Thank you! And yes, the facts don’t lie. 😉
I know, the cross-country team AWESOME last year!
