Firstly, dogs require work and can be expensive, so you need to make sure you are prepared and you are choosing the right breed. This is because different breeds have different energy levels and some can require up to and hour of walking each day – sometimes more. Here is a list of dog breeds with information on each: http://www.justdogbreeds.com/all-dog-breeds.html

There are a few negatives of owning a dog but every dog owner will have a different opinion.

  • Puppies may cry and might want to be let outside in the middle of the night
  • Dogs can be expensive, mostly due to vet bills
  • Potty training your dog, as well as obedience training, can be difficult
  • Some dogs may require large amounts of walking and will be restless and unhappy without it

Owning a dog can be a very nice experience if you have the resources required to own one.

  • Owning a dog can be very fun, as you can take your dog with you to many places, like hiking
  • If you enjoy walking and jogging, a dog is a perfect companion as they can jog with you
  • Your dog may sit with you while you do a household activity like laundry, watching TV, or eating

If you do plan on owning a dog I recommend you take a look at adopting a dog, like from the Calgary Humane Society. Before making your final decision, make sure you do some research.
