On February 26 2018, Samsung announced its newest installment of its galaxy phone line with the addition of the Samsung Galaxy S9. The newest phones by the South Korean manufacturer boasts new additions to its Galaxy Line, which aims to help it compete with the popularity of Apple’s iPhone X.

One of the newest most promising features of the Samsung Galaxy S9 is the newly developed camera, which Samsung claims to operate just like the human eye. The camera lens adjusts its aperture size to welcome incoming light for shaper-less grainy photos in low light. This dynamic adaptation means that the Samsung Galaxys S9’s lens can adapt to whatever light conditions, meaning that the lens can create the best conditions possible regardless of the time of day. However, alongside the dynamic aperture lens, the Galaxy S9 also boasts an incredibly fast slow motion camera which shoots at 960 frames per second, compared to the previous Galaxy S8 which only shot at 240 frames per second. All in all this means that the camera can capture more frames when compiling a video, meaning that the user can get more definition and a higher quality, “slower”, slow-motion video.

Alongside the plethora of increased Camera benefits which the S9 was given this year, it has also improved certain aspects of its Augmented Reality to give its a deeper user experience. This year Samsung introduced AR focused emoji’s which aim to act in direct competition with Apple’s “animoji.” The built-in Camera in the S9 scans the users face and builds a 3D emoji character which is meant to resemble the users real-life appearance. Users can use the 3D emojis in text messages in a fashion similar to the already popular “Bitmoji,” or they can send live videos which mimic their facial expressions. Moreover, AR allows for other purposes that individuals can use on a daily basis to make their lives more simple. For example, Bixby – Samsung’s smart assistant, can now utilize the camera to render translations of street signs in different languages to the user’s language of choice.

Relative to the Galaxy S7 and the difference it had to the Galaxy S8, the Galaxy S9 has not changed very much in regards to design compared to its older sibling. It still features Samsung’s beautiful infinity edge display which has Samsung’s in-house produced OLED technology. However, one change which has occurred, is the repositioning of the fingerprint reader from beside the camera, to underneath it. This repositioning addresses the issue which caused a lot of people to get smudges on their camera versus touch the fingerprint sensor. With this new repositioning,  it makes it easier and more accessible to find the fingerprint reader.

Overall Samsung’s newest phone is sure to create some media attention. It has added a lot of desirable features which are sure to keep loyal Samsung enthusiasts in the Samsung ecosystem, however as a result of software optimization, and improved hardware, Samsung may also be creating some new fans.
