In case you didn’t know, the “Big Apple” refers to NYC. Over the last few days I was fortunate to be vacationing at New York and I thought I’d share some of the photos I took.

NYC

A view of the city. Can you spot the Empire State building?

The Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge connects Manhattan and Brooklyn together and was originally called “New York and Brooklyn Bridge” and the “East River Bridge.” It was built in 1883 and stands as one of the oldest suspension bridges in the States.

The Statue of Liberty

La Liberté éclairant le monde, the Statue of Liberty. It was a gift from the French to the Americans, dedicated in 1886. Sculptor Frederic Bartholdi was commissioned to design a sculpture, to commemorate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence and the friendship between France and US. The statue symbolizes democracy and freedom. Libertas, the goddess of freedom, holds a torch, to represent light and enlightenment, and tabula ansata, meaning that the Declaration of Independence is a keystone of American democracy. Broken chains lie at her feet to symbolize overthrowing of tyranny.

I was with a tour guide for one of the days I spent in NY. She’d ask everyone if they knew what the goddess was holding, she told us we are wrong about the torch and tablet and really, it was ice cream and a Bible.

iPads for all!

When I arrived in New York, I fell in love with the JFK airport. Calgary may have free WiFi use, not just on board, but JFK had WiFi and iPads for anyone to use! There were approximately 50 iPads available for use.

Hopefully one day you’ll travel to NY as well. Although I <3ed NY, I don’t think I can see myself settling down there. One thing for sure is that I do not want to drive with other New Yorkers.
