Poutine, the tasty dish comprised of french fries, gravy, and cheese curdsis known to
some as “a heart attack on a plate” and to others as a joyous treat. Regardless of if your trying the dish for the first time or if you’ve tasted it on past trips to Quebec, the place to go to get some in Calgary is Calgary Farmers’ Market‘s “Taste of Quebec,” a booth that sells poutine, maple syrup, and other French-Canadian delights.
After visiting Quebec multiple times, when I get a poutine craving, the stuff from New York Fries or Wendy’s simply doesn’t satisfy, it just isn’t the same!
Taste of Quebec’s poutine is definitely the most authentic poutine I’ve tasted in Western Canada. With gravy shipped from Quebec and fresh crispy fries, their poutine almost conjures up images of the quaint streets of Quebec City during winter -time. The only complaint I have about their poutine is that the cheese curds weren’t quite squeaky, close, but not like in Quebec. Still, thats just me being picky, and I’d definitely recommend giving Taste of Quebec a try next time your visiting the Farmers’ Market.
On that note if you are going to Quebec do try Chez Ashton, a local chain that specializes in poutine.
