The Canadian Housing Crisis and the Effect on the Rising Homelessness Population

When buying a house, realtors will tell you it is either the seller’s market or the buyer’s market. What they mean by this is that either one is in control, and right now, the seller has the power. Even though Covid-19 plunged the world into a recession, the housing market boomed. Due to supply, and demand homeowners have been bumping up prices on their properties, which is why the average listing cost is at an all-time high right now. Many also believe this has, and definitely will have, a negative effect on the homeless population.

How high are housing prices here in Canada?

Well, typically, the housing market activity peaks in the spring, declines in the summer and fall, and slows further in the winter before rebounding again. But 2021 has completely knocked that trend off its track, as the rate at which people are buying homes keeps rising. Even in the winter, when housing activity usually drops, the trends are the same as the ones set in spring. Additionally, in an article written by CBC News on December 15th, it states that more than 630,634 homes have been sold on CREA’s MLS system this year, which is even more than the record set in 2020, with 552,423 houses being sold. As we can see the demand for the houses are super high at the moment, and it makes sense as to why the prices are also going up. The average house price in Canada is a shocking $719,102, with the highest being in British Columbia at $987,352.

How come the prices are so high?

Like mentioned before, the reason prices are so high are because of supply and demand. In Canada, there is a higher demand for homes than there is a supply of houses. An article by New Canadian Life explains this idea further, and it says that there are multiple factors to this housing crisis. First of all, Canada relies heavily on real estate, as it makes up about 12% of its gross domestic product. Even when there is plenty of construction for new real estate, people see a tight supply of living spaces within their desired city, and it turns into a struggle for homes that aren’t worth nearly as much as they are being purchased for. Low-interest rates can also have an impact on the price of houses. With low-interest rates more people can get approved for lower mortgage rates. This draws in more potential buyers and leads to high bidding wars between parties. Immigration is also a part of it, as Canada is an immigrant country. Numerous people come to Canada or the United States to start a new life, and many have to do this in order to escape war or natural disasters. Real estate responds to demands created by people, specifically households, so when the population increases, the housing market does as well.

What does this have to do with the rising numbers of homeless people?

The Government of Canada has not said much about homelessness in relation to the global pandemic, but many have argued that Covid will “absolutely exacerbate homelessness in Canada”. With the pandemic housing prices may also go up, so it is understandable that less people can afford to purchase a home. Additionally, an article by United Way Centraide Canada says that approximately 235,000 Canadians experience homelessness each year, and these figures may increase due to economic instability during the Coronavirus pandemic. An article by National Public Radio outlines the same issue that is happening in Canada. 580,000 individuals were homeless in the United States in 2020, which is a 2% increase from the year before. Also, more than 106,000 children were homeless during this year, and while the majority of homeless children were in shelters or transitional housing, almost 11,000 were living outside.

What can you do to help?

While there isn’t much you can do about the housing crisis, you can support the homeless by volunteering at shelters, fundraising, bringing awareness, donating clothing or food, and so on.

Male “Birth Control” is Becoming a Reality

0

German scientist Rebecca Weiss presents the future of contraceptives, in the form of a modern “testicle bath”. Odd opening isn’t it? However, it’s all true. “Coso” is a male contraceptive that is hormone free and reversible. The industrial design graduate made this device as a part of her master thesis. Furthermore, the device won top prize at Germany’s Dyson Award, a coveted design competition. Now, what is Coso?

How it works-

Weiss was inspired to create the COSO due to the lack of viable male contraceptives on the market. The contemporary “ball” bath works in 3 simple steps.

  1. Fill with water to the designated waterline. the waterline is set by a doctor in regards to testicle size.
  2.  Heat up the water to the required temperature.
  3. Lastly, dip male’s testicles into the device for recommended amount of time.

The device utilizes ultrasound deep heat to cause sperm mobility in the testicles to be modified and temporarily cease. Therefore, from these actions it should not be possible for egg fertilization during sexual intercourse. Coso must be used under doctors supervision for the first time, and it takes two weeks to take effect.

The “infertile” effects that the device gives can last for six months.

The future of contraceptives-

It’s painless, surgery free, temporary, and long term. What is there to not like? While there are millions of contraceptive methods for women, this creates options for men. While the primary form of birth control for women can cause irregularities in hormones, physical discomfort, and can contribute to cancers, this is a easy alternative. And in a feminist standpoint, shouldn’t the fertilizers be the preventers? Because of Coso, this can create responsibility for the male counterpart of a reproducing relationship.

For more information on the device, check out the Coso instagram.

Self Care for the Winter Break

0

Students from all around have entered winter break; a time to relax, recharge and prepare for exams. Although it’s called a “break”, this time can be some of the most stressful for individuals. Especially with the uprise of cases in relation to the Omicron variant, and people panicking to start some Christmas shopping, the thought of “what can I do for myself?” doesn’t cross the mind. Self-care is important to self regulate, and this is the best time to just breathe. Therefore, here is a list of some self care practices that you should take some time to do.

Clean up

A Cluttered Room is a Cluttered Mind | by FARIHA | Medium

A cluttered space leads to a cluttered mind. When you have 3 piles of laundry sitting in a corner, random dirty plates in the sink, or simply unorganized files;  it’s good to just tidy up. Certainly there’s a correlation to the environment you set yourself in, and the functionality of a human. Consequently, organization makes life easier. It creates a positive headspace, as you know where everything is. Oneself won’t need to scourge the monster pile of laundry for that one shirt. Start by marking dates in a calendar; do you have any appointments or parties to attend this month? Next, wash, vacuum, or just purge through what is and isn’t  dirty. There you go! In addition to the past work you’ve done- clean up yourself.

Mirror Check

Equally as important as your physical environment- your mental state is crucial to take care of. Have a staring contest with yourself in the mirror. What grows inside of you comes out physically. Notice the eyebags from the recent stressful days and seasonal depression. At the same time as your staring contest, take a couple of deep breaths. Put on a facemask, take a long bath, and do whatever treatments your body needs, because this is the time for you to regenerate the self-love that is put into others this month.

Mental Reset

The Playlist You Should to Listen to Depending on the City You're Visiting | Travel + LeisureMental fatigue is a drowning phenomenon, for students especially. Since youth nowadays basically breathe reused worksheets, and inaccurate textbooks; have a media detox. Start a new show on whatever streaming service you use, and tell everyone you know about it. Even taking the time to listen to that new album that your favorite artist dropped is perfect to just reset the mind. The main goal is to free the mind, and just to take a break.

All About Stephen Curry’s 3PT Record & The Psychology Behind It

The greatest gift we can receive is to have the chance, just once in our lives, to make a difference.

– Stephen Strange

Making a difference.

There are about 8 million people on this planet, and we’re each just one out of the crowd. Even comprehending such a ratio may be beyond the capability of the human brain, so it makes sense that there are deep psychological considerations behind this concept. And the fact that our desire to make a difference is often so profound explains why we may not behave the same way when the opportunity is presented.

In the context of sports, there are many ways through which one can engrave themselves in history. Winning championships, MVPs, and being recognized as an All-Star are all things elite athletes have on their personal radar – accomplishments that would save them a spot in sports history for all of eternity. In fact, these accolades may even earn them a spot in the Hall of Fame for their respective sport – which is one of, if not the most prestigious forms of recognition in the world of sports. However, there is another feat that an athlete can accomplish – a feat that is different from all others mentioned: breaking records. Many teams have won championships, and many players have won MVPs, since those honors are awarded annually. In addition, tens of players are named as All-Stars each year, and a handful are inducted into the Hall of Fame yearly as well. But to be the absolute best in even one particular category, to know that there is not a single human being on the planet who has excelled more, that is legendary on an entirely different scale.

With that being said, having the goal of setting a record can have a unique effect on the human brain. The idea of such an illustrious honor can take a psychological toll on even the most skilled athletes this world has ever seen.

On Tuesday, December 14th, 2021, Stephen Curry broke Ray Allen’s record for most 3-pointers in NBA history with 2,974 (and counting). Curry was already known by many as the greatest shooter the game of basketball has ever seen. And if there was ever any doubt about it, there isn’t one anymore. Stephen Curry has played less than 800 games in his NBA career, over 500 games less than Ray Allen had at the time that he reached the same milestone. Curry was already at the top of most of the 3-point lists, but this record in particular was the Holy Grail of shooting records. So when ‘number 30’ made history earlier this week, it was a pretty big deal.

When Steph was 10 three-pointers away from the record, the hype started to build up. Curry has scored 10 three-pointers in a single game 22 times in his career, the most by any player in NBA history (the next most is only 5 times, by Klay Thompson). So when he was 10 away from the record, fans thought he might get his 23rd game of the sort. However, it took him 3 games after that to break the record. His shooting splits in the first two of those games weren’t exactly spectacular – not bad at all for an average player, but by Curry standards, not the greatest. And it doesn’t matter much that it took a couple more games to reach the top, but it suggests something deeper about the psychological side of things. Why was it that the greatest shooter of all time, a player that can knock down shots when his team needs it the most, experienced this setback within those few specific games? Is it possible that even the best of the best can face psychological setbacks when presented with the opportunity to make history? We will never truly know if it was a result of psychology or just a regular shooting slump – but it’s interesting to wonder how the human brain functions in different situations, and how it deals with the idea of fame and glory.

You Should Open Your Windows

It probably sounds quite strange to say this during winter, but this is a PSA to open your windows.

But why should you open your window?

The winter season indicates that you’re likely going to stay inside for extensive periods of time. This implies concentration of indoor pollutants such as dust particles. The United States Environmental Protection Agency states that outside air is typically cleaner than indoor air, and opening your window helps circulate those pollutants out. Additionally, there is no fear of insects entering your room during winter, and if you’re into the external white noise that’s also a bonus.

Although I focus on winter here since it’s relevant, this applies year round. Hopefully you have a bug screen if you’re doing this in summer though.

But why shouldn’t you open your window?

Now, there are also clear downsides. There’s obviously the case of dryness and discomfort, however, you only need approximately 15-20 minutes to circulate the air and experience the benefits. Arguably, you shouldn’t keep your window open for full extended periods. Depending on the temperature difference between your building and the outside air, your heating / cooling system will have to work harder to sustain the temperature. If your weather is as brutal as mine, you might also find your window fully freezes in place.

Given the health benefits of a proper air environment, you should probably open your window if you can. This is especially important if you’re a sedentary person. Keep your room from getting too stuffy, and remember to moisturize too.

Tapes and the Unending Archive

0

We live in a world defined by an abundance of information. Our phones and computers continually collect data about us. Similarly, posts and photos and videos—all of which have to “exist” somewhere in the real world—flood the internet.

We call it the cloud, but the actual information up in the cloud ultimately still has to be stored somewhere physical. There’s always a place in some server thousands of miles away with our data; these servers hold the data of the world and everything we call the internet.

And the amount of new data generated every year keeps rising (no doubt in part by the increase in the uses of Big Data). By 2025, according to some estimates, the amount of data created each day globally will exceed 463 exabytes (that’s 463,000,000 terabytes).

So where does all of this data end up in the end? A lot of it gets deleted, but there’s also a significant amount that gets archived—stored for extended periods, whether for actual storage or just safekeeping in case it needs to be referenced in the future.

Traditionally, this would be on hard drives, as solid state flash storage is far too expensive. However, unexpectedly, in recent years, there has been a renaissance of sorts with one form of long-term storage: magnetic tapes.

Magnetic Tapes?

Yes, tapes: the same type of stuff used to store music and record video—a seeming relic from the past. Teams of researchers, nonetheless, have been working to squeeze more and more information into less and less space using magnetic tapes.

Indeed, entire labs dedicated to nanotech research have focused on this challenge, and many have achieved stunning results. IBM’s Dr. Mark Lantz, in 2015, showed off tapes that could store 123 GB per square inch. In 2017, they could do 201 GB per squared inch.

And just last year, they achieved 317 GB per square inch. That means a single tape cartridge using their technology can store around 580 terabytes (!) of data.

These stunning results aren’t without evident downsides though. Reading and writing information with tapes is time-consuming. (There’s a reason why, ever since the 1960s, computers have pretty much exclusively used hard disks or solid state drives.)

However, these tapes are still in resurgence because of one key application: archiving. There’s a lot of data and tapes are particularly cost- and space-efficient. Plus, data only needs to be preserved in a “cold” state in archival processes, meaning that they don’t need frequent access.

It’s rather incredible how densely packed these tapes can be with information. And just as impressive is the rate at which this technology continues to improve.

We shouldn’t be surprised to see this renaissance of “old” technology, just as we shouldn’t be surprised by the work being done to improve them, even today. We, therefore, shouldn’t be surprised in the future if we ever see tapes become the go-to solution for archiving the world’s data.

In all likelihood, that will be something to look forward to.

How To Study Effectively

Studying can seem super time-consuming and difficult to students. Especially if you spend hours studying, and still flunk your test. In reality, It isn’t as hard as you think it is. Everyone has different preferences. What might work for others, might not work for you (and that’s completely fine.) Finding the “best” way to study is constantly evolving. It isn’t something that should be done right before a test, nor late at night.

  • Get Rid Of Distractions

Distractions play a major role in the ineffectiveness of studying. The biggest distraction for students are their cellphones. What works for me is flipping over my phone so that it faces the table and is no longer upright. This greatly lessens the chance of you checking your notifications.

  • Take Notes

Taking notes on paper is significantly better than digital note-taking. It is scientifically proven that students who wrote notes (compared to typing), remembered more and had a deeper understanding of the material.

  • Make A Study Schedule/Plan

The longer you study, the better. However, don’t burn yourself out as that can do as much harm as not studying at all. Personally, I think that 1-3 hours a day is reasonable. If you’re new to studying, start with 45 minutes then slowly work your way upwards. Studying isn’t supposed to be something that you dread. The time that you dedicate to school doesn’t have to just be studying. You can do your homework and catch up on any assignments that you may have missed. (Don’t forget to take short breaks.)

  • Talk To Your Teachers

Communication is key. If you’re really struggling in a subject, the best thing to do would be talk to a parent/guardian or teacher. Whomever you decide to talk to, they can get you a tutor or personally help you with what you’re struggling with.

  • Test Yourself

Testing yourself is an effective way of seeing how much knowledge you retained. You can find quizzes online, or you can be creative and make your own test.

At the end of the day, studying pays off. You might not notice a major change at first, but the more you do it, the more you improve.

The POV of an Unknowing Student in a Walkout

League of Legend’s- Arcane, is a Masterpiece

What is League of Legends?

In 2009, the world was introduced to League of Legends; an MMO battle arena. Unknowingly, League would eventually become one of the world’s most played games, averaging 4.2 million players daily. Ultimately, League of Legends is pretty well known now. My first interactions with the game, came from the non stop pandering of YouTube ads in 2018. I never actually touched the game until late 2020, but, I did know of its existence. As a result, I have been bestowed with libraries full of lore, stories, and quips about the entire LoL narrative. And there are massive amounts of lore in the simple ‘point and click’ game.

At the moment, there is a made up K-pop group, 13 different regions of origin, 11 major unique species, League’s own spinoff of the Sailor Moon universe, eight distinctive games (in development or released) based around League of Legends, and personalized voice lines in-game based on you, and your enemy’s Champion. And each aspect of these all tie into a huge storyline. And since the release of Arcane, the storyline has been more understood, and expanded on greatly.

*Spoilers ahead*

Arcane

Because of the collaboration of Riot Games with Netflix, the masterpiece of ‘Arcane’ was created. Just season one alone took six years to finish! In Arcane, we focus on the sisters Powder and Vi and how they become on opposite sides fighting for the same cause. All of the connections with each of the characters are beautifully written. For example, the connection of Vi and Caitlyn show opposite personalities; however, to both of them, the enemy is destroying what they each love most. Not only the character connections are phenomenal, but the allusion to our world’s current issues are so explicitly seen and understood through the entire season. The political issues of the advanced city ‘Piltover’, and the repressed undercity ‘Zaun’ struggle to make end deals with one another, inciting inside jobs, corrupt power, and popularized substance abuse.

The best thing that the show brings is the concept of morality, and how experiences shape it. The development of Powder to Jinx stems from that singular concept. While watching, I couldn’t help but praise the distinction between Jinx’s world to everyone else. You can empathize with the mistreatment of Jinx because of the suffocation you will feel in the scenes she’s seen in. Because of the flashing colours, camera switches, and eerie silhouettes seen when in the POV of Jinx, it creates an immersion that understands why she does certain things.

More Praise

Certainly I was surprised by how visually stunning the show came to be. No wonder it took six years! Each scene was capable to produce such a specific mood. My favourite showcase of this talent was in episode 3. The pure grief in the atmosphere from Powder’s cries and the visuals is heartbreaking.

A fun fact to mention, Arcane broke records for Netflix’s best rated original series, just three days after release. Another thing to note, the lore and story presented in Arcane have been hinted at for years. The character Fiddlesticks says the voice line “all you fault, ALL YOUR FAULT” to Jinx in-game. This line comes from the blame and targeting that Powder got, creating Jinx.

The title song “Enemy” (written by Imagine Dragons) is a perspective on each character. There is an enemy to everyone, but our worst enemy is ourselves.

How One Book Became a Centrepiece in Sci-fi literature

0

Regarded as one of the greatest science fiction novels to come out of the twentieth century, Frank Hubert’s Dune has sold millions of copies around the world and is still incredibly influential to this day. After being released in 1965, Dune has been ranked next to J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings for the sheer contribution the book has made in its genre. The well-beloved Star Wars series would not have even been made without it. The narrative vastness, the richness of invention, and world-building have irrevocably changed science fiction as J.R.R. Tolkien’s work did to fantasy. A movie adaptation to the award-winning book has also recently come out enjoying the best debut of any day-and-date release in 2021, but even that pales in comparison to the book itself.

The Story

For anyone who has not read the book, which I quickly recommend you do, here is a brief overview. Dune is set far in the future where humanity has spread far throughout the universe. However, despite how advanced the civilization might appear, there are some surprisingly regressive qualities, including the banning of all computers such as artificial intelligence. Some other humans have been augmented to replace such technology. Politically, different warring houses are kept in line by a ruthless galactic emperor. The main protagonist of the book, Paul, is from one of these warring houses: House Atreides.

One of the key resources to this entire interplanetary empire is a substance known as Melange, or more simply, “the spice”. Spice is a drug whose many useful properties include the induction of a kind of enhanced space-time perception in pilots of interstellar spacecraft. Without this substance, the communication and transport system of the Imperium will collapse. This spice is only produced on one planet in all of the universe called Arrakis, or as it is colloquially called, Dune. Dune is only governed by one feudal house under the discretion of the Emporer, and it is the responsibility of that ruling house to acquire and process the spice for the rest of imperium, making it an incredibly important and lucrative position. However, the task is not without its difficulties. Dune is a dangerous planet, with the spice only being found in the deep deserts of this near water-less planet, guarded by creatures attracted by the noise; Sandworms, behemoths many hundreds of meters in length that travel through the dunes like whales through the ocean, protect the spice in addition to the raging sandstorms and indigenous nomads.

At the beginning of the novel, the rule of Dune is being passed to House Atreides from another feudal house (the dangerous and scheming Harkonnen). There are suspicions that the Harkonnen will try to attack to regain control, and unfortunately, Paul gets caught in the center of all of it. After barely escaping the eventual attack of the Harkonnen with his mother, Paul allies with the native inhabitants of Dune, known as the Fremen. Soon, due to his enhanced abilities as a product of both his genetics and the spice, he is recognized as a messianic figure by the Fremen and is made their leader. He then leads them on an attack against the Harkonnen and the Emporer.

The Lasting Appeal

What really sets Dune apart from other science fiction, was its incredible detail to the world and its inhabitants. Herbert, like Tolkien, helpfully provided a glossary for further enrichment into the world, and later on, helped guide full encyclopedia for the Dune world. Not only that but considerable attention was also given to the imagined ecology of Dune. He created one of the first speculative fictional works to take up the issue of environmentalism.

What makes the book even more fascinating is its ability to continue to relate with the modern world of today, with themes of ecological exploitation and colonialism being identified. The main allegorical comparison came in the form of the spice-based economy was seen as a parallel to our own global oil dependence, much of which involved exploiting the desert-like parts of the earth. All of this and more makes Dune a fascinating read for anyone.

In all honesty, I could go on about the appeal of this book for hours, but with respect to the ever-approaching word count, I will end with one note. Give the book a try, and I promise you will not be disappointed.

The Red Wheelbarrow: Beauty of Details

0

This poem only consists of 8 short lines, but far beyond that is what’s truly hidden in between each word. This poem holds its own special details and characteristics that I feel no other poems could bring out. The feeling and emotions of what this poem portrays in only a few lines is what astonishes me the most. The ambedo and melancholic trance feeling that emerges inside my brain when I read this piece makes me dig deep within my thoughts. This poem has the ability to bring out more than what it can hold and expresses so much detail with the 16 simple words it consists of. I decided to use these words and come up with my own perspective on what I think this poem portrays and symbolizes.

First Stanza: “so much depends upon”

This stanza does not bring out too much information. So much depends upon something unknown but something that holds a special value. It leaves the readers at a confused/unclear state but still understands what is being told. “So much depends upon…”

This stanza also structures the whole poem and leads the readers into a certain path.

Second Stanza: “a red wheelbarrow”

It was a great choice to immediately connect it to the first stanza that was previously read. That brought up a great limpid imagery and made it so much easier to connect to the author’s thoughts. “A bright red wheelbarrow standing still beside an unknown farmhouse.” Notice that the sentence states “red” wheelbarrow and not just any wheelbarrow. The color red is one of the very details that really helped with the unique style of this poem. Red usually resembles desire or determination, whereas, the first stanza stated “so much depends upon.” The connections of these 2 stanzas made me realize a great metaphor of what it could really represent. “So much depends upon desire” The wheelbarrow no longer is a nonliving thing, instead, it represents something more important and more relevant to reality. The human desire.

Third Stanza: “glazed with rain water”

Notice the word choice. The word choice explains deeply about the style and tone of this entire poem. The poet used the word “glazed” instead of “covered” or “overlayed.” This helps the readers to set the mood in a tranquil/serene atmosphere. “Rainwater” was also another small unnoticeable detail. The poet especially grabbed onto this word for a reason because this word brings more contrasts into the atmosphere. It’s able to add a new feeling to the setting of the story. This is what I came up with: “So much depends upon true desire. The true desire comes from the minutes and seconds from the clock. Like how raindrops stroll down, making contact with the ground.” The rain symbolizes time, time passes by from the beginning of a raindrop falling down from the sky to the second it touches the ground.

Fourth Stanza: “beside the white chickens”

Chickens are living animals, every living thing requires basic thought processes for it to live. The chickens have a meaning of “thought” or “perspective”.  The word “white” also stands out drastically. White symbolizes “balance” and “equality.” Which connects to the previous word “thought.”

The true desire comes from seconds and minutes from the clock, and requires a balanced perspective to be successfully achieved.

In Conclusion

I made an overall conclusion on what this poem could represent. Everyone has different opinions so everyone’s versions of what this poem could potentially represent is different. But my overall version is: “So much depends upon desire. The true desire comes from minutes and seconds of the clock. Like how the raindrops stroll down, making contact with the ground. It requires a balanced perspective to be successfully achieved.”

These few sentences basically translate into: “everyone learns how to find the best of them by using time as a tool to learn and using thoughts as a tool to discover.”

The POV of an Unknowing Student in a Walkout

0

November 16th marked an important day for the student bodies of Western Canada High School and Central Memorial. This was a day of advocacy for the friends and classmates of many. As a matter of fact, I am a student attending Western Canada Highschool. Thus, I was able to attend the walkout firsthand. For this article, I will present the events of the day through my eyes.

The Start

Tuesday, November 16. 8:23 AM-

At this time, this would be the first I am hearing about the walkout. Just weeks earlier, I heard about a poor girl coming forwards with her case and gaining bountiful support. I was initially confused as why we were having a walkout, and why I would need to keep this a secret; but I would rather stand up for someone than sit in my hour long CALM class (sorry!). Just 15 minutes into my first period, students began standing up and exiting in a nonchalant fashion. I receive the text from my friend telling me to meet them at the washroom. I completely did not expect what occurred next.

Realization

Tuesday, November 16. 9:15 AM-

The halls were chaos. If you would like an accurate image, think about that scene in “Mean Girls” where “The Plastics” are walking through the halls, and ‘Cady’ falls into the trash can. However, there are no “Plastics” and no one falls into a trash can. Accordingly, I begin leaving those front school doors. When oneself enters to an audience of 100-sum students that I’ve seen and spoken to many times, standing all together on a cold Tuesday, was a massive eye opener. This isn’t some iconic movie trope where the “hippies” and the “cheerleaders” join together to speak on the same topic. This is real life, where genuine issues happen daily, and these issues tend to be the ones that are infringing on peoples rights.

Knowledge and Advocacy

Tuesday, November 16. 9:30 AM-

After huddling with my friends, and learning what was happening– I was shocked. students were being promised help, accommodation, and more resources after coming forward with their cases, however these promises never came to be. The administration was neglecting the student body’s voice, even after there were reminders from students. Certainly the walkout was not only for justice, but for more responsibility from other students, and the Administration of these schools. I could feel how alone my classmates were feeling. Above all, no person should ever feel alone and helpless. Especially in a school environment.

The Aftermath

Tuesday, November 16. 9:45 AM-

The walkout was a beautiful showcase in what my generation can do, and it was honestly quite emotional. Being in the vulnerable state of a student, there isn’t much power one can possess. But by showing up for your friends, and standing for what you believe in; you can create the change necessary.

Proper Time Management: the key to success

As the semester comes to an end and finals slowly approach, managing my time has become difficult. Oftentimes, I find myself scrambling to complete my assignments only to realize that hours have gone by. However, this problem is not uncommon, many individuals struggle with time management just as I did and still do sometimes. In today’s blog, I wanted to share some of the benefits of proper time management along with ways to improve it.

What is time management?

Essentially, time management is the way an individual chooses to prioritize their tasks and decide how much time should be used for a certain activity. However, having proper time management skills can have a variety of benefits, including:

  • increased productivity and efficiency
  • more time throughout the day for recreation
  • quality results
  • met deadlines
  • lower levels of procrastination
  • better quality of life
  • most importantly, lower levels of stress and/or anxiety

Therefore, time management has a variety of benefits that can truly help an individual be successful. However, now let’s address how we can improve our time management skills.

Time management tips

There are several things that we can do to improve our time management skills. You should:

  • Set attainable goals. Try setting small, easy to achieve goals that will motivate you to get work done. For example, “I will finish planning my essay in an hour.”
  • Prioritize your tasks. While it may seem difficult, complete all your important and long tasks before you try to work on any others.
  • Create deadlines for yourself. Instead of waiting for the deadline to slowly approach, create deadlines for yourself while you finish tasks. For example, “I should be done this assignment by Tuesday at the latest.”
  • Reward yourself (“work hard, play hard”). It is crucial to reward yourself when you complete tasks. These rewards do not have to be large, they can be simple, yet effective. For example, rewarding yourself by watching one episode of your favorite show after you’re done studying for math.
  • Take breaks. The human brain can only focus for a short period of time. Therefore, taking breaks will help you get work done effectively and preserve the quality of your work.
  • Keep your workspace clean and organized. By sitting in a clean workspace, you are able to think clearly and truly be more efficient.
  • Create to-do lists (divide and conquer”). By creating to-do lists, you break down all the activities that you have to complete into a simple, easy-to-complete list.
  • Plan ahead. Create a schedule and complete your tasks according to it. For example, if you have a game on Sunday, you cannot complete your assignment that day. Instead, you should focus on completing it prior to this event.
  • Don’t multitask. Instead of multitasking, focus on one task and complete it well. When we multitask, we waste most of our energy and focus on switching between tasks. Therefore, choose one task and move onto the next when you are done the original one.
  • Do it now. Rather than procrastinating and waiting to get all of your work done, complete it now.

Time management resources

Today, there are a variety of apps and resources designed to help individuals manage their time. However, it is important to realize that utilizing these apps will not guarantee great time management skills. For example, quality knives will not make a five star chef.

  • Forest
  • MindNode
  • Evernote
  • Remember the Milk
  • TimeTree
  • Trello
  • Toggl

That’s it! I truly hope this blog helped you find ways to manage your time well. As always, please share any others tips or resources that you may have in the comments.
