Ready, set , skate!

With exams nearing, the pressure and stress that comes with them are magnified 10 times.  I am sure most of us can all use a break, and what better way to get rid of stress and have some fun at the same time than ice skating?

The Calgary Olympic Oval is a top notch speed skating and sports facility that includes a 400m oval rink and 2 standard rinks in the middle used mainly for hockey.  The oval rink is home to the ‘fastest ice’ in the world where speed skating records are set and broken.  No wonder why many athletes and teams train and compete at the oval.  The Olympic Oval is:

dedicated to the pursuit of excellence and health and wellness for all.

Admission for youth 6-15 years of age is $4, and for ages 16 and older it’s $6.  On Mondays from 6:30PM-8:10 PM until March 15th, with a donation of food or money to the Calgary Food Bank, admission for skating is FREE!  If ice and skates does not interest you, there is also a  110m running track that surrounds the oval rink for recreational running/jogging. Check out the rink schedule for the month for the public skating hours.

Have fun skating!

Read This: Carter Finally Gets It

0

“Warning: This book contains lewd humor, underage drinking, illicit fantasizing and very bad decision-making”.  This is actually writing on the back of the book. I can not tell whether this is to attract readers or because this warning is mandatory.

The novel follows Carter, a typical freshmen boy trying to get through the year.  This novel is like a year long version of Superbad with similarities to White Castle.  The characters go party to party with the same goals as the characters from Superbad and like in White Castle all the choices made turn out for the worst.

The story is hilarious and will have most people laughing out loud. The protagonist suffers from a lack of attention known as ADD and he stutter whenever he get nervous so right away you now something funny is going to come of this.

The thing I really like about this novel is the realistic interpretation of a 14 year old.  And it allows you to see the world from the eye of a teenage boy.

Carter get caught in a vicious love triangle, gets tricked, humiliated, and has a run in with the police.  Also, he fights a psychopath that knows karate, gets caught up in a brutal rivalry and experiences a bunch of potentially fatal situations, and still manages to be popular.  All that good stuff.

If you are looking for a deep insightful novel this is not the one.  If you are looking for a romantic love story this is not the one.  But if you are looking for a funny story with characters you can relate too this is the one (if you’re a guy).  If you’re a girl, this book is probably not what you’re looking for.

It is all in all a great book and I would recommend it to audiences 15 and over.

Where It’s Art: Strange Sculptures (2/3)

I brought you the first part of the series, which showed you how people make lint into art and if you thought that was strange, check out part 2:

When you finish a roll of toilet paper, you may immediately wonder if there’s more under your sink or pray that someone else goes into the stall next to you.  It’s doubtful however, that you think “Aha!  Time to create art!”  Well, the creators of the following sculptures, which are far more captivating in their second life than they were as toilet paper rolls, must think a bit differently from the majority.

Not Quite Holmes, but Fun Nonetheless

0

Sherlock Holmes (2009)Guy Ritchie has essentially been making the same film since Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), his feature film debut.  With the exception of his romantic comedy outing (Swept Away, which was awarded the 2002 Golden Raspberry for Worst Film), his films have been very similar to one another.  Ritchie’s directorial style is characterized by quick cuts, complex plots, humor, and lots of action.  When you see Guy Ritchie’s name attached to a movie you know, more or less, what to expect.

That said, when I heard he was directing Sherlock Holmes and that Robert Downey Jr. was to star I was apprehensive.  I usually enjoy Ritchie’s films and I’m a big fan of Robert Downey Jr.’s, but I wasn’t sure they were the right people to bring the brilliant detective to the big screen.  In the novels and short stories, Holmes is a skilled combatant, but rarely employs his knowledge of self-defense.  He carries a revolver, but rarely finds himself using it.  He doesn’t seem like the kind of character that would appear in a Guy Ritchie film or the sort of role Robert Downey Jr. would be recommended for.  However, that was all before I had seen the film.

While some of my worries were well placed, the film actually did a much better job of translating Sherlock Holmes into an action movie than I thought it might.  The characters of Holmes and his assistant Dr. Watson (played by Jude Law) are presented as over-the-top, action-hero versions of themselves, but they work.  The relationship between the two is always entertaining to watch as Jude Law’s Watson struggles to keep his temper with his genius, but childish companion.

Certain aspects of Holmes’ character are kept intact quite well.  I was particularly pleased with the way the detective’s signature method of deduction is handled.  Holmes deduces a shady character to be a professor, citing the chalk dust he spotted on his lapel and a quick shot of the white powder on the apparent professor’s jacket is shown in accompaniment.  You quickly make the mental association; the detective makes his point and comes off sharp as a tack.

All in all the film can be described in one word; entertaining.  Gripping action sequences and grand set pieces (the film climaxes atop Tower Bridge in the middle of its construction), it’s fun from start to finish.  You’re bound to find yourself on the edge of your seat more than once.

Don’t Worry, Be Happy

0

A lot of the time the news we see on TV is about the negative, bad and awful things that are happening in the world.  We often hear sensationalized stories about robberies, murders, wars and “what’s in your dinner that you shouldn’t be eating” reports, which seem to outpower the good things that have happened in the world.  If you want in on the positive spin, I’ve found a couple websites that balances out the bad in the news.

happy

Happy News

This site boasts, “We believe virtue, goodwill and heroism are hot news. That’s why we bring you up-to-the-minute news, geared to lift spirits and inspire lives. Add in a diverse team of Citizen Journalists reporting positive stories from around the world, and you’ve got one happy place for news.” Happy whatsitallaboutNews covers practically every aspect of your life – from business, to science, to health, and the arts and the environment, there’s a little “happy” for everyone.

Optimist World

The happy people who operate this site have this to say,”In a world that seems ever more cynical and full of bad news, Optimist World chooses to counteract this by bringing you inspirational stories and positive news from around the globe to show that humankind can be good news too.”

What’s cool about Optimist World is that it features companies that are doing good things, and profiles awesome charities who are changing the world, and it even has its own TV show. Check these sites out, and you’ll definitely find lots of things to smile about 🙂

A Bit of Fry and Laurie!

0

Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry star in this hilarious British Sketch comedy – A Bit of Fry and Laurie!  The show was first aired on BBC in 1989, and ran all the way to 1995 with four seasons.

Filled with elaborate wordplay and innuendo, the sketches would never cross the line while making everyone laugh!

Both actors are quite talented.  From Laurie’s musical talent to Fry’s love of language and a dash of British humour completes this wondrous show.

For those unfamiliar with the cast, Hugh Laurie currently plays Dr. Gregory House in the medical drama House and has received two Golden Globes awards!  You might know Stephen Fry from his recent recurring guest role as Dr. Gordon Wyatt in crime series Bones!

Here’s one of the greatest moments of the show! Be sure to check it out, as you will not stop laughing!

Beatlemania! Please Please Me and With the Beatles (1963)

0

“We thought that if we lasted for two or three years that would be fantastic.”           – Ringo StarrBeatles

Welcome to the third part in my series about the Beatles!

1963 is The Beatles’ annus mirabilis. 1963 is year of touring.  1963 is Beatlemania!

It all started with their second single, Please Please Me, which was an instant smash and hitting top of the charts.  Soon after, The Beatles recorded their debut album which is also named Please Please Me.  This album was an instant success, hitting top of the official UK album charts and remained for another thirty weeks.  In November of 1963, The Beatles released their second album, With the Beatles.  This album replaced Please Please Me in the top charts and stayed for another twenty one weeks.

Following The Beatles’ success with the single, Please Please Me, they found themselves in high demand throughout UK.  Over the next year, most of their time was spent on four nationwide tours.  The little time that remained was split between press interviews, TV shows and recording sessions.  Magazines, newspapers, posters were all about them.  The “drop-T” logo was also first introduced 1963.  During The Beatles’ nationwide tours, The Beatles were also the first UK band that topped an American act at a UK concert.  The UK was crazy about The Beatles!

In October of 1963, The Beatles released the single I Want to Hold Your Hand which became the Beatles’ best-selling single worldwide, paving the way for British Invasion of the United States!

Enjoy their single I Want to Hold Your Hand as the British Invasion begins!

Oh dear! Exams Are Here!

Sadly enough, exams are right around the corner.  *Sigh*  This year, though we’re all going to ace them, right?  Right?

Yes, you will!  That is, if you prepare properly.  Here’s are some of the most recommended tips for exam preparation.  Remember, they may not all work for you, so chose some that do and stick with them.

When Studying:

  • If you find that you keep re-reading a page over and over again, maybe you’re not studying to your full potential.  Every person learns and absorbs information differently, so it’s best to study the way that suits you best. This is called your learning style.  Generally, people fall into one of three categories, but you can just as easily have traits of both.  These are auditory learners, kinesthetic learners and visual learners.  To get a rough view of how you learn best, take this quick test!

Highway 61: Road to Success

0

“Muddy Waters rode the 61. So did Bob Dylan, Ike Turner, and B.B. King. Elvis grew up in the housing projects along it.”

I have blogged previously about websites mixing music and social networking, and this week I bring you another: The Sixtyone.  The site runs like YouTube – anyone can upload music that they’ve created and then users decide what makes the front page by “hearting” songs they’ve listened to.  Users are then rewarded for participating in this democratic experience with reputation and achievements, also gained by completing ‘quests.’  Users can also level up their influence by being the first to recognize music that will achieve popularity.

Highway 61 was the road by which people left to find better opportunities. And by leaving they took their music to the world.”

But of course, money has to be involved somewhere.  Credits are available for purchase and can then be spent to purchase songs or albums from artists, or even simply to “tip” artists, similar to the tip jar function on Kongregate.

It’s like its own music industry.  It gives striving artists a great opportunity to find success among music lovers and lets listeners be at the core of the process of success.

Sam’s Weekly Serving of NeRd: Spirit’s on Mars! (and Transformers)

1

Spirit
Spirit rover

Personally, I believe that it’s the Transformers trying to send us a message, but think what you will.

The Mars rover, Spirit, has been rather unlucky since its launch in early 2004.  The original mission, along with twin rover, Opportunity, was supposed to last three months.  However, they got a job extention and are still working on our friend Mars.  Just weeks after landing in a Martian crater in 2004, Spirit went haywire and transmitted gibberish to Earth (sound Transformer-like?).  Engineers eventually nursed it back to health.

Transformer?
Could this be what caused Spirit to fall?

More recently, the little “drama queen” fell backward into a pit and is now stuck in the fluffy sand of the Red Planet (the Decepticons kicked it in, I’m sure of it). The attempt to regain Spirit’s mobility has been underway since April.  If things don’t go so well, it will become a Mars lander (immobile).  It’s been a particularly rough year for Spirit.  Besides getting stuck in a sand rut, it suffered sporadic bouts of amnesia and other woes including sudden computer reboots (brainwashed by Decepticons, perhaps?).

In the mean time, Opportunity is doing quite well and cruising along, sending clear messages to Earth (they have yet to get to it…).  Currently, it is drilling into a dark-toned rock that scientists think may be a stoney meteorite.

Hopefully, all will be well for Spirit and Opportunity, and the Decepticons will leave the twin rovers to complete their mission in peace ;).

Beatboxing Out of The Box

0

I am always on the hunt for something new and exciting when it comes to music and beatboxing has always fascinated me. I have tried endlessly over and over again (in the comforts of my room) to figure out how one makes such beats, but every time no flash of brilliance occurs.  Now beatboxing on its own generally blows me away, but when I heard about Yuri Lane I knew I had to share his awesome-ness.

Yuri has always been involved in the arts with theatre, mime, improvisation and doing work for commercial and television.  Currently Yuri is working on, “From Tel Aviv to Ramallah,” a hip-hop play that tackles the Israeli-Palestinian conflict while emphasizing the humanity, suffering and joy of both Israelis and Palestinians.  I seriously suggest you take a minute to listen to the crazy sounds of Yuri Lane.

Canada’s Premier Motorcycle Show? Calgary?

0

Yes, put them together!  I kid you not, it’s happening this weekend…

The Calgary Motorcycle Show takes place at the BMO Centre from January 8th to the 10th.  There will be a Manufacturer Showcase of the new 2010 motorcycles, a SHE Rides Night where admission is halved for ladies, and a Motor Madness Thrill Show guaranteed to get your adrenaline pumping!  Click here to see what else will be happening at this event.

Now, I’m not a motorcycle enthusiast or anything, but this sounded pretty cool to me.  I will hopefully be able to pop in to take a look around over the weekend—but a quick head’s up: general admission will be $13, but if you’re between the ages of 6 – 15, you will be able to get in for $9.50 instead!  You can check the hours of the event and other admission prices here.

The weather for this weekend doesn’t look too shabby…so don’t hide at home, take advantage of the weather and come on out to look around the Calgary Motorcycle Show!
