During winter break, I had done a week of hot yoga classes and found them to be so relaxing, calming, and fun. I recommend a hot yoga class to everyone!  Hot yoga gives you an amazing feeling after each class. It’s perfect for getting away from everything and having some ‘you’ time.  If you ever feel tense or stressed, consider taking a class.  In Calgary, there are a variety of locations.  Click here to find a studio close to you!

Be More Chill by Ned Vizzini

0

Be More Chill is a novel by the author who wrote It’s Kind of a Funny Story.  Ned Vizzini reminds me of John Green -another great author.  I noticed a lot of similarities in their novels, but Ned Vizzini’s novels have a more original plot.

This novel follow Jeremy, and – like most teen novels about guys – he is a social outcast.  Jeremy is tormented by his peers and has only one friend.  That is until one night when he hears about “the Squip”.  The Squip is a fictional, edible, super computer.  It enters the blood stream of the person who ingests it, then enters the person’s brain where it makes mental suggestions to the user.  The Squip is as close to being “all knowing” as a computer can be.  And our protagonist’s life changes when he finally gets his hand on one, but for better or for worse?

This is a great novel that I would recommend to all teen audiences.  Unfortunately this novel has a very vague ending which is one of my pet peeves.  Despite all that, Ned Vizzini is truly a great author and I hope to read more of his novels in the future.  I give this novel a 4.5/5

Cross Country by James Patterson

2

Cross Country by James Patterson is a recent novel of the “Alex Cross” series.  I had never read a novel from this series until I came across this one, but have heard a lot of good things about the series and of all the novels written by James Patterson.

The first thing I really appreciate about this novel is the fact that I didn’t have to read the previous novel of this series to understand what is going on.  I was able to jump right into the story without getting the feeling that I was missing something.

The novel starts with the lead character, Alex Cross, investigating brutal murders of two families in Washington D.C. one of the victims is Alex’s college sweetheart.  The investigation becomes more and more personal, while more murders of similar fashion occur.  This takes Alex to Africa in pursuit of the heartless killer… but things quickly turn for the worse.

This novel explores the brutality, corruption, and instability in Africa.  It provides the reader with a realistic representation of certain regions of Africa, but at the same time it presents a more human perspective.  When reading this novel I was constantly reminded of the movie “Blood Diamond”, the difference being that this novel more gruesomely follows a much more depressing plot.

Cross Country is an intense experience for any reader that can handle it, but I believe that it’s intended for readers above the age of 14.  This is another great novel and I give it a 4.5/5.

NPR First Listen: MGMT

0

Since September of 2008 the fantastic American public radio network, NPR, has been offering early listens to select upcoming records on their website.  It’s called First Listen.

For a period of time (up to the date the album is officially released) you can stream an entire album from NPR.com.  It’s a pretty awesome service.

Available for a listen at this moment is MGMT’s upcoming album Congratulations.

Many of you will no doubt remember the hits Time to Pretend, Electric Feel, and Kids from the duo’s debut record, Oracular Spectacular.  Despite the success these singles brought the band, MGMT set out to make a single-less album.  This is an idea that really appeals to the hipster in me who shakes his head at those who only know a band for “that one song.”  The band is presenting the album as-is, without trying to direct the attention of listeners to a specific part.  They’re trying to get you to find out what you like most about the album yourself.

Anyways, give Congratulations a listen right here and see what you think.

And how about that trippy album art?

Awkward Family Photos

I love taking photos and I love taking awkward family photos.  Whenever I go through my families photo albums I laugh so hard when looking at a photo and asking “what’s happening” or “why is this happening”.  Well I stumbled upon a new website titled Awkward Family Photos.  It’s basically a website displaying peoples awkward family photos.  Here are some jems:

The Hair Salon must have been offering a great deal on perms.

Evoke: A Crash Course In Saving The World

0

While doing research for a project on virtual identities this year, I spent a lot of time over at the Daedalus Project. Nick Yee, a research scientist at the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), dedicated about five years of his life to study Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs). He’s the expert in the field, and is referenced in virtually every article on the subject.  I doubted that other scientists were doing similar research, so I was surprised when Jane McGonigal started talking about World of Warcraft in her speech on TED this week with regards to how “Gaming can make a better world“.

Jane is a game designer, and her goal for the next decade is to harness the gameplay hours of “Super-Empowered Hopeful Individuals” and use them to make positive change in the real world.  At the end of her presentation she introduced a number of games she has designed to achieve this, the most recent of which is Evoke.  Launched on March 12th, Evoke is a collaboration between Jane and the World Bank Institute that has users “evoke” real-word issues such as food security, poverty, human rights, education, and so forth.  It will run until May 3rd, at which time players who have successfully completed 10 challenges will be dubbed certified “EVOKE Social Innovators” of the class of 2010.  Furthermore, the best of the best will be set up with online mentorships with various social innovators world-wide, and the chance to attend the EVOKE summit in Washington.

If you have a problem, and you can’t solve it alone, evoke it.

Evoke combines all the characteristics of an online game with social networking.  You level up and gain experience in knowledge, courage, collaboration, etc., and create a character like in any other game.  But the character is simply you.  Part of your mission is to piece together your hero story, but it’s really just an exercise in examining what skills and personality traits you possess that will help you as a social innovator. Every Wednesday a new mission is unlocked on the website, and users must “Learn,” “Act,” and “Imagine” to complete them, and they all have social networking components attached.  Most “Learn” components ask you to blog or vlog a response with your thoughts on a source, and how you can use them to change the world.  For the first mission, the “Act” component requires that you shadow a social innovator online, and perhaps even fire them an e-mail or two.  This video is the “trailer” for the game, and introduces many of the key components of the experience.

[vimeo 9094186]

The great thing about this game is that it’s current.  It’s happening now, and it’s happening with youth.  It’s like going to a local conference and meeting other young activists, combined with gaming and self-exploration.  Whether you’re new to activism or simply looking for more fresh ideas and ways to make a difference, Evoke has benefits for everyone. You can learn more about how to play here and sign up here, but whatever you do, just don’t associate your Ning ID with the name “Sarah”. (The site has some rotten programming that causes accounts with that name to overlap and not work properly.  I was surprised to log in and find that I was apparently a very intelligent 15 year-old girl living in Toronto who had already completed most of the three available missions.)

Churchill’s Got Talent (1)

Every school has hosted talent shows before, and even though it’s just for fun, most of contestants take it very seriously. Churchill’s Got Talent is a talent show hosted in Sir Winston Churchill High School and for everyone’s entertainment I will post some of the special performance.

This performance is a song called “Sorry Sorry” by Super Junior and it’s a very popular song.  My friend and I decided to do this dance because the song has a special meaning to us.  Hope everyone enjoys it!

One Earth. One Hour.

Earth Hour: what started as an initiative to stop climate change in the city of Sydney, Australia quickly spread internationally and became a ‘global sustainability movement’…

…giving people a voice on the future of our planet and working together to create a sustainable low carbon future for our planet.

Why should you care?  Think about the fact that this is our only home and look how much resources we take from it.  So, why not try to reduce the damages and maintain it for the future generations to come by giving a back a little?  You don’t need to go out and plant dozens of trees (though that is not such a bad idea).  No, just the simple action of turning off the lights for 60 minutes will make a difference.

[youtube FclcMfzjwug ]

Whether you believe in ‘global warming’ or not, climate change is real and it affects us all.  By turning off your lights you are taking a stand and putting a vote towards a better future for this precious planet we call home.

[youtube 1CRs-7lRlPo ]

Spread the word and remember to show your support for Earth by switching off your lights for an hour at 8:30 PM, Saturday March 27th.

One Earth. One Hour. Earth Hour.

$ Moneh Moneh Moneh $

I recently received an e-mail about this intense national youth competition in Canada known as Impact Microcredit.  I like to think of Microcredit as a war of entrepreneurs.  Teams of youth across Canada are given a small amount of $100 from Impact – hence the microcredit – and you invest it in a business venture to make as much money as possible within a period of ten days.

Wait, what’s Impact anyway?  Well, the Impact Entrepreneurship Group is the largest non-profit student-run organization in Canada dedicated to encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit within youth.  Actually, the person who started it was a Shad alumni, Kunal Gupta, who is now the CEO of his personally founded mobile software company Polar Mobile. (Go Shads!)

Back to the competition.  So, teams of 3-5 friends in high school from coast to coast compete vigorously from April 21st – 30th, pushing the boundaries of innovation and initiative to new heights.  In other words: they combine their passion for entrepreneurship, with their incredible ideas, and turn that $100 into as much money as they can.

So what do you do with the money after ten days?  Keep it, obviously.  Just kidding ^_^ Where would the altruism be in that?  That’s why all profits of the competition are donated to a charity of your choosing!  So, not only do you get to raise money for tons of worthy charities, but there are amazing scholarships and prizes up for grabs for all the teams that participate.

You can see a list of rules and important dates here, and basically all answers to any other questions you may have.  However, you must register before April 9th, and I’m sure none of you will miss that deadline because you’re already brimming with ideas!

$100.  10 Days.  One Challenge.
Make an Impact.

Sand Art

On Ukraine’s Got Talent, Kseniya Simonova did a sand art piece about the Holocaust, and the video of it on YouTube has gotten almost 5 million views.  I think that art is such an awesome way to express how you feel about anything that has affected you in your life, or even things you’ve just heard about.  This video is absolutely breath-taking and it’s definitely a must see, so check it out!

Run Your Own Virtual Lemonade Stand!

0

In Social Studies at school, I’m learning about economics.  We played a game to introduce us to supply and demand and other economic concepts when starting this unit.  In this game, we were able to run our own virtual lemonade stands, where the player controls all the aspects of the Lemonade Stand, from pricing, to quality control, to purchasing necessary inventory.  In addition to this, the player has to deal with unpredictable weather, picky customers, and inventory wastes. If you want to try and run your own virtual lemonade stand, click here.  Try it out!

Meditations on Lady Gaga

5

I  recently read an article by Douglas Hopper which made me revisit some thoughts I’ve had on Lady Gaga and her role in popular culture.

I’m not a fan of Lady Gaga’s music.  Her brand of pop-dance isn’t my thing.  But beyond her music, there is something I can appreciate about her.  She’s a determinedly different pop star. No one else on the radio is comparable to her in wardrobe, in bizarre music videos, and in eccentricity.

Her most recent video “Telephone” (certainly too NSFW to be linked to here) finds Gaga in an extremely promiscuous prison for women performing racy dance numbers then being bailed out by Beyoncé.  The two commit a mass murder at a diner then flee from the police.  Please note that there’s much about this video I’m not mentioning in order to ‘keep it PG’.

Who else could be behind “Telephone” besides Lady Gaga?  She is an unapologetic rebel.  Totally out there – unwilling to conform to anyone’s expectations. I don’t even think I know what Lady Gaga really looks like, whenever I’ve seen her she’s in extensive costume.  A disco ball textured dress and mask, covered in stage blood, wearing a hat made out of her own hair – Gaga is impossible to pin down.

If there were an individual to compare to Lady Gaga I would have to point to Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.  The fellow New Yorker has a wardrobe almost as insane as Gaga’s and (especially in the early punk-rock days of the YYYs) is just as animated in performance.

Even if all her over-the-top imagery – the androgyny, the ultra-eroticism – is merely meant to shock viewers and sell records rather than actually deliver a message, I’m glad there’s a figure in the mainstream that is able to make that imagery happen.

Alice in Wonderland

3

Going to the movies is one of our favourite ways to amuse ourselves nowadays.  They’re fun and can also help reduce stress.

Over the last few months,  Avatar was HUGELY discussed by EVERYONE.  It got a lot of high praise for the awesome 3D graphics and in-depth story.

But this month…guess what?  The most-talked about film has become Alice in Wonderland!

This movie is 3D as well, and the story based on the book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll, a story familiar to people at every age.  In the book, the main story revolves around Alice’s dream.  However, the plot of the movie is bit different: (Note* this could be a spoiler) a 19-year-old Alice returns to the magical world from her childhood adventure, where she reunites with her old friends and learns of her true destiny which is to the end the Red Queen’s Regin of Terror.  Throughout the movie, there’s tons of suspense, and the supporting charactors add a lot of humour.

Directed by Tim Burton, the film stars Mia Wasikowska as Alice, and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter (plus a host of other awesome actors).

So!  Make your plans to go see it in theatres! I’m sure you won’t be disappointed!

Let’s have a quick look!

Save Water!!

1

So yesterday, I made a trip down to the Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant to take a tour around the facilities, and I have to say from what I heard there and read, it is probably one of the most important infrastructures we have in Calgary.  In a nutshell,  Bonnybrook takes about 70-80%0 of all the sewage in Calgary and surrounding areas, and processes it before releasing it back into the river.  All the stuff from your toilets, showers, sinks, stuff that goes down the drain pretty much all end up there.  When they arrive, they’ll go through three steps of treatment: primary, secondary and tertiary…Simple enough?

Primary takes care of the visible solids that’s in the sewage that comes in so that things like toilet paper, poop and, well, I’ll leave you to imagine the rest. Secondary treatment takes care of the dissolved chemicals – mostly nutrients – in the water and also gets rid of the solids that are left that didn’t get filtered in primary.  They do this with big tanks filled with bacteria that feed on these chemicals.  Finally, we come to tertiary treatment where intense, and I mean intense, UV light are used to mutate the DNA of the bacteria still left in the water so they can’t reproduce anymore so you won’t get a huge boom of bacteria downstream killing off all the fish and other wildlife.  So, I would stay away from those lights if I were you, you’ll get hurt pretty bad!

Anyhow, Bonnybrook helps to clean the water dramatically.  Without it, our river will be completely filled with sewage and be completely disgusting.  It provides the conditions for Calgarians to go out and enjoy the river.  Believe it or not, Calgary’s got one of the best fishing spots in the world.  One more thing to be proud of, the waste-water treatment plants in Calgary are rated A+ amongst others in the world.  You can’t get better than that.

However, all this treatment takes a lot of money and it’s not 100% fool proof.  So, the less water that is being used or wasted, the less cost and less chance of bad chemicals going into the river.  Guess the point I’m trying to get through is, be efficient with water.  It’s an important part of every single living organism’s life: you, me, animals, fish and birds. Don’t dump random things that you are not suppose to down the toilet or sink and don’t waste water.  Know that you have the leisure of this wonderful plant and others in the world don’t.  So, save your water!
