Poetry Moment: Robert Frost’s Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening

3

Right now in Language Arts at school I’m learning about poetry. Robert Frost is an a great poet and I’ve read a few of his poems. This post, I want to share one his poems with you. Take a look below to read the poem:

Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening, Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

1923

What do you think of his poem? Do you like it?

5 random things to do in your spare time

0

Spending your nights bored? Can’t think of anything to do? Here’s some awesome activites that you could take part in to fill some of your spare time! 🙂

1. Learn a new instrument— whether it is at school with band or with an instructor, learning a new instrument is an awesome way to spend your free time and then you can show off your new skills to your family and friends!! If you dont have the money to spend the big bucks at a guitar studio or store for lessons, then see if you have a friend or someone at your school that knows how to play and that might teach you for free or even for really cheap! You could save a lot of money, but make sure that they are serious about it or its all a waste!

2. Start a sport— Whatever your into whether it be hockey, soccer, tennis, rugby, track and field, swimming.. etc. sports are a great way to stay fit and keep you occupied! You can play on sport teams with your school, or look up clubs in your community.

3. Volunteer— If your the type that wants to spend their time helping others but doesnt know where to start, there are plenty of places to find volunteer oportunities, for all different types of people! First place to look is usually the volunteer website for your city for example Volunteer Calgary… where you can find many different types of opportunities in your city. Or if you even wanted to volunteer Internationally something you might find interesting would be Habitat for humanity, which offers many programs most to do with building houses for people all over the world.

4. Learn a new recipe— if you are the cooking or baking type and you feel like trying something new, google something youve always wanted to try or go through your recipe book to see if there is anything interesting. Take a stab at cooking or baking it and maybe invite some friends over to have dinner 🙂

5. Photograph Scavenger Hunt— set up a scavenger hunt in your community or with a group of friends. Take pictures of an object and on the back write a sentence giving a clue to where it might be. Spend a day or an afternoon  with your friends hunting for the clues and even have a prize for the winner!!

Any other ideas on things to do with your spare time?

That’s right, guys! You have the chance to save a persons life–in fact, you can save three people’s lives. People suffering from cancer or car accidents are depending on blood from donors. Think about it: one hour of your time can add years to another person’s life. The CBS Youth Week Event is called Young Blood’s Week. It takes place between April 24th and May 7th. Be sure to check it out!

If you are 17 or older, you can donate blood now. Check out the video posted below for some information about donating blood. The Canadian Blood Services building is located at 737 13th Avenue SW. If that seems too far, don’t worry. They have lifebuses to take people to the clinic.

Dude Perfect!

DID YOU KNOW ABOUT DUDE PERFECT?

I heard about these guys yesterday from my brother and he told me they are the idol for teenage boys. I didn’t believe that and after I saw the film, I felt it’s impossible and I couldn’t understand why they were being looked up to.

These guys make up the films with their basketball skills. Normally, I wouldn’t expect anything special. BUT! These guys are different. They try various way of shooting their basket ball such as back shot or moving shot. Most of their shots seemed impossible but they made their goal perfectly. Even though they couldn’t see their basket or basket is really far. Even though I don’t know much about basket ball, I got really impressed and I believe evrybody will be.

I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak

0

Often, the authors of youth novels write stories that are relatively depressing and lacking in any conclusion. This is done to add a realistic edge to their story. They often do this by exploring the ugly side of people and society; this results in a de-motivational but realistic story. It is rare to find a non-depressing yet realistic youth novel. That is why I am in luck.

In “I am the Messenger” the author explores the beauty of humanity and society. This is a story about the difference that one person can make and multiple lives just by caring.

The story follow the protagonist Ed Kennedy a 19 year old cab driver whose life is changed after a bank robbery. Soon, he begins to receive tasks to deliver no physical messages. Right away he beings to question who is sending him these tasks, but it did not take long for him to realize that refusing to deliver a message is not an option. For Ed, figuring out what the message he must deliver is, may be a more difficult task than delivering the actual message.

Markus Zusak is a phenomenal author and I am the messenger may become one of my favorite novels of all time. This is a highly motivational novel that remains realistic, though it does have very suspenseful parts. This is one of those stories that just makes you feel good afterwards. I recommend this novel to anyone 14 and above, it is definitely a 5/5

Comrad Sound: All-ages

0

The Calgary Youth Foundation, one of CYFC’s many programs, is a group of youth volunteers responsible for distributing grants to “youth-driven projects” during two granting cycles a year. In the November cycle, local all-ages venue Comrad Sound was given a grant to help renovate their space to be more readily usable by the Calgary youth community.

Comrad Sound is run by an all-star volunteer team that has included members from other local projects and events such as Sled Island and Imaginary Ordinary, and offers its venue for a wide array of activities that enable the community to share “music, art, knowledge, and skills”.

Their website features a calendar packed with opportunities for youth throughout the city to get together and interact. One of the more interesting events on the April calendar is the book, music, movies, and video games sale. Basically an open-ended communal garage sale for youth that will be happening all-day this Saturday, April 17th.

And those of you following our Perspective series will be interested in the two photography workshops taking place on Sunday April 18th and 25th, and led by local photographers Randy Gibson (he’s done work for Sled Island, The Uptown, and FFWD) and Stalman (he took these for us). At $5 it’s a really neat way to brush up on your photography skills from some of the local best, and hang out with some other youth with similar interests. To register, fire them an e-mail at class[at]rgibsonphoto.com.

But if you can’t make it out this month, keep your eyes peeled for a new line-up of events in May.

It’s Coming Soon!!!

Italy Trip

1

I just got back from a trip to Italy which was absolutely amazing! And if you’ve been to Italy you know what I mean! My four favourite things about the vacation were the original statue of David, the original Last Supper painting, the ruin city of Pompeii and the medieval city of San Gimignano.

Michelangelo’s David was incredible! It’s hard to believe that someone can carve a statue so realistic down to the smallest detail. The plan when he was going to carve this statue was to create the “perfect man”  and so in order to avoid imperfection Michelangelo studied human anatomy by dissecting human bodies even though it was against the church. It was incredible to see in person because you could admire all the details he put into it. The left hand of the statue is up while the right is down, and because he understood anatomy the veins of the right hand were more budged than the ones of the left. As amazing how exact everything was, it was also such a beautiful piece of art and the copies don’t do it any justice at all.

The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci actually left me breathless!! He created exact to what the scriptures said, and even foreshadowed in the painting it was beautiful!!! I suggest though if you do plan on seeing The Last Supper GO WITH A GUIDE unless you have studied it, because a guide helps you to understand so much more all the work put into the painting and the reasons why each person is placed a certain way. At first I thought it was going to be so boring but honestly one of the best experiences of my life.

Pompeii was spectacular!! A 2000 year old city of ruin, but there is so much there, you can see the marks in the road from the carriages, you can see a 2000 year old oven, an original pipe, the red light district, and it’s absolutely beautiful there! Pompeii was buried by the ashes of when Mount Vesuvius erupted and all of the people died from the toxic gases. The incredible thing is though that they put a mould over a couple people who died and one dog and so you can see how when they died most of them were trying to cover their mouths from the gases. It’s a stunning place and it is definitely a must see if you are interested in seeing ruins.

When I waked into San Gimignano it was like I had gone back in time, even though it is mostly shops the old buildings are awesome, and there are still 14 original tower houses left! I climbed The Great Tower there which is just the biggest one there, and the view was indescribable!!!! The drive from Florence was 50 minutes and you could see Florence from the top of that tower and the countryside of Tuscany, it was so spectacular!! There is definitely nothing like that in Canada! Also in this city there is the world’s best gelato place since 2006, which I can definitely agree that the gelato is amazing! And they have some very interesting flavours there is even a saffron flavoured one!

Overall the trip was definitely worth it and if you ever travel to Italy these 4 things have a five star rating from me and are must sees!!!

eU: Ep2 – World’s youngest university professor

1

Alia Sabur TeachingThis week, we will take a look at another amazing individual, an extraordinary youth who has achieved beyond her peers. Alia Sabur, unlike her peers, earned a B.S. (Bachelor of Science) at a age of 14 with an IQ that is off the chart, then went on completing her M.S. and Ph.D. in the field of Materials Science and Engineering. Like that wasn’t enough, she became the world’s youngest university professor at the age of aged 18 years 362 days, when she was appointed as a full-time faculty Professor at Konkuk University, Seoul, South Korea as Research Liaison with Stony Brook University starting from 19 February 2008.

While doing world changing research and experiments on nanotube-based cellular probes for use in medical research, she still finds time in discovering her musical talent. In her spare time, she performs with orchestras as a clarinetist, and has performed also with musicians as diverse as Lang Lang and Smash Mouth. She is very well-rounded not only as a person, but also a musician: she enjoys performing as an orchestral member, chamber musician and soloist equally and is venturing into crossover, jazz and fusion. In addition, she has won numerous artistic awards.

Being a girl of special talents, Alia Sabur lends hands to those in need. In her effort to help the relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina, she accepted a temporary position at the Southern University at New Orleans, a historically Black public college that is still operating out of trailers, as a way to give back to a community in need.

Alia Sabur will return to Konkuk University at South Korea May this year, continuing her research on nanotube-based cellular probes.

Everything You Need To Know From: Said The Whale

0

Well you would not believe who called the other day on their drive to St. John’s, Newfoundland! Lead singer, Tyler Bancroft, from Vancouver based band, Said The Whale talked to Youth Are Awesome about what life is like being a musician; everything from making a music video, to how comfortable naps in the tour van can be. Tyler and fellow songwriter, vocalist and guitar player, Ben Worcester, formed Said The Whale in 2007. Spencer Schoening (drums), Peter Carruthers (bass) and Jaycelyn Brown (keys) joined the two songwriters to make Said The Whale the perfect group. The group is no stranger to Calgary playing V-Fest in 2008, and you might have even seen them playing during the televised Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill. Their latest CD release, “Islands Disappear”, has launched them on a cross-Canada tour, “Kill ‘Em With Kindness” and will be making a stop in Calgary on May 1st, playing at the Royal Canadian Legion Br 1. (Sorry guys but this is an 18+ event) And now that you know a little more about them let’s get into what Tyler had to say the other day.

Said The Whalte

YAA: The tour you are currently on is called, “Kill ‘Em With Kindness”,

Show Poster

what are some ways that Said The Whale kills people with kindness?

Tyler: It’s a reference to the Tim and Eric Totally Awesome Show, and there’s the character Steve Brule, it’s a reference to him specifically. But how does Said The Whale kill ’em with kindness? Well we are all very nice people and we all endeavor to be so, so sure we are very, very nice people.

YAA: On your blog you made an entry about how your EP, Bear Bones portrays you in a more vulnerable sense, why was it important for you to release an album like that?

Tyler: It was just something to keep the ball rolling, we had put an album out in October and then it was February so we wanted to release something to keep people interested, just an acoustic recording. That was how Ben and I started out making music together, just recording and experimenting with different sounds in our basements, there were a few strange instruments, but it was just us with a lot of time on our hands. It was how we went back to our roots and I think it’s a nice listen.

YAA: All across Canada people are Rolling Up The Rim to Win at Tim Horton’s, has Said The Whale won anything yet?

Tyler: We stop at Tim Horton’s as much as any other band on the road does but maybe a bit less cause we’re slowly getting sick of it, but we have not won a single prize yet this tour. I know it says on the cup that you have a one in eight chance of winning but that is hogwash! No way is that true, because we have had well over eight coffees. We’re pretty ticked off about it, but glad you brought it up.

YAA: Why did you chose the name, “Said the Whale”?

Tyler: There is no interesting story to that one, it was just a result of a brainstorm that Ben and I had a few years ago. We thought it was representative of our music and that it had a west coast feel to it, so unfortunately there’s no really awesome story I can tell you.

YAA: Where did the idea for your music video, “Camilo (The Magician)” come from? Had you ever thought about having your music portrayed by animated characters before?

Tyler: The very first video we ever did was animated and it was created by the same person who does all of our album artwork. With this one we just pitched it to an animation company and they came back to us with a storyline we all thought was cool, and luckily we liked the first idea they approached us with. We all love how the video turned out.

[youtube Ar0bmGshhTs]

YAA: While you’re on tour, what’s a snack that you always have in the tour van?

Tyler: Probably trail mix, there is no end to trail mix in the van. We are all pretty even trail mix eaters, I hate it when people just pick out the chocolates. We just go to the bulk section at Safeway and mix our own so you know that there will be something you like in there and you don’t have to pick and choose.

YAA: Many of your songs have a certain West Coast flavor, is there an area in Vancouver that you like to visit for inspiration when song writing?

Tyler: Ben has a cabin on one of the islands and I know he goes up there a lot. As for me, I work on tug boats, so I’m always out on the water and me and my dad would go boating in the summer. There are a lot of beautiful places to hang out in the summer, for sure.

YAA: Said The Whale won the Most Canadian Song award at the 2009 Bucky Awards, is there anything you would have liked to add to your acceptance speech?

Tyler: I was pretty happy with my acceptance speech but I seem to recall having honoured the rest of the people in the category cause it was a tough category. I find it a little bit interesting that our song “Emerald Lake, AB” is by no means our most Canadian song, but it’s the song that won the category. I find it funny. Our most Canadian song is probably “Out On The Shield” which is a direct homage to small towns in Canada.

YAA: If you could go on tour with any band (either still making music or not) who would it be?

Tyler: It’s hard for me not to be so nearsighted and not say Plants and Animals, because we’re all huge fans of them and getting on this tour was really awesome for us, and we’re all really excited about it.

Said The WhaleYAA: How did you decide which animals to feature in your music video, “This City’s A Mess”? Why did you decide to also have these friends featured in the video “Curse of the Currents”?

Tyler: We went to the costume shop and picked up the coolest five costumes we could find. On their website they had a lobster costume and I really wanted to have that, but they didn’t have it in stock at the time. A whole bunch of people are in the costumes, we all rotated so it’s different in every shot. We all had a lot of beer and took turns putting on the costumes, it was a great day. We did those videos in the same weekend and the costumes are really expensive to rent so we wanted to get the most out of them as possible.

YAA: What’s your favourite type of cheese?

Tyler: I’m going to go with a delicious chevre, a really good goat cheese would be my favourite. Either that or brie, but if you took one of those delicious expensive little tubes of chevre, those are the best. I like it on a parmesan melted cracker; you shred the parmesan cheese and put it on a baking sheet in a circle and it makes a sort of crispy cheese cracker. Put a grape and some chevre on there and you’re in business. It’s pretty good.

Now whether you’re an old fan or a new fan of Said The Whale make sure you become a fan on Facebook, become their friend on Myspace, follow them on Twitter and check out a few other music videos on their Youtube channel. And don’t forget, if you are 18 or older to check out Said The Whale’s show in Calgary on May 1st at the Royal Canadian Legion Br 1. And now you know.

From the 4 performances I picked out two very special ones that I personally enjoyed a lot.

The Giver by Lois Lowry

2

This week I’m reviewing a novel for a younger audience. Here’s a novel that raises an interesting question. Is it possible to create a perfect society and what should be sacrificed if this was to be accomplished?

The story follows a protagonist named Jonas he lives in a world of sameness and obliviousness, a world with minimal suffering, where everything is controlled. But on one fateful day, Jonas is selected as the receiver of memories and is ripped away from his world of comfort. He is given the truth and the ability to feel and to question. Now he is face with the decision of whether to stay in his oblivious yet safe society or to risk it all for freedom and the life of a significant other.

The story explores an extreme side to communism and also deals with the significance of memories

This novel is about as depressing as child novels get, yet it is greatly written novel. I really enjoyed this novel for the most part but I’m a little disappointed about the ending (it was sort of anticlimactic). But all in all, this was a great novel that I would recommend to readers 12 and above. I give the giver a 4/5

Body Image Poem

1

Hey everyone,

Here’s another poem; this one’s about body image. Let me know what you think in the comments section! For more info on anorexia, visit here.

That’s not me, the mirror says,
What happened to the skinny girl those other days?
Eat less, throw it up, eat even less,
Don’t ever tell anyone, don’t ever confess
Those jeans don’t fit, I’m still too fat
“Anorexia?” No no it’s not that!
It’s okay the models do it!
I’m still not like them who can I kid?
Eat less, throw it up, Eat even less,
Don’t ever tell anyone, not until death.

Relax, Unwind, and Just Breathe

0

Everyone is always looking for a balance, be it between school and social activities, or religious and material wealth. When it comes down to having time for our selves, we often spend it working or taking on more than we can handle and forget about this balance. I decided to research a simple question that many of us sometimes ask ourselves, “How do I relax?” This post is a guide to show you the little things that make us all feel a bit better when it comes to relaxing.

Not only did I find a list of 100 ways to relax, but I also found an article about eight simple ways to relax. Take a look below and read brief descriptions from the article:

1. Meditate- Research has shown that meditation can be helpful in lowering heart rate and blood pressure.
2. Drink Green Tea- Green Tea is soothing as it contains theanine, an amino acid that gives flavor to green tea and also promotes relaxation. It also works as an antagonist to caffeine, which can make a stress response worse.
3. Treat Yourself- Have something sweet, just don’t forget to watch your portion size!
4. Enjoy an aromatherapy massage- Getting a massage is a great way to free yourself of tension and relax, and adding aromatherapy oils such as chamomile or lavender are beneficial in relaxing.
5. Create a relaxation room- Dedicate a room in your house to relaxing and leave behind your daily distractions like your laptop and BlackBerrry. Swap them for a magazine or a comfy pillow!
6. Listen to your favorite music – A slow song can put you in a calm state of mind.
7. Indulge in a hot bath- Heat relaxes your muscles and soothes your mind.
8. Get moving- Exercise reduces stress and makes you feel great after a hectic day!

To read the full description of each of the eight ways to help you relax, click here. Enjoy the time you take for yourself and try out these tips! I know, after trying many of these tips, that they aid in calming and unwinding.
