Another Amazing Poetry Moment

0

I have yet another poetry post for you all! This is one of my favorite poems as I find it inspiring. Read the poem below:

Our Deepest Fear

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?
Actually who are we not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.
And when we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

– Marianne Williamson

What do you think about this poem? Personally, I feel that her message in this poem is one that we should all know.

I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak

Often, the authors of youth novels write stories that are relatively depressing and lacking in any conclusion. This is done to add a realistic edge to their story. They often do this by exploring the ugly side of people and society; this results in a de-motivational but realistic story. It is rare to find a non-depressing yet realistic youth novel. That is why I am in luck.

In “I am the Messenger” the author explores the beauty of humanity and society. This is a story about the difference that one person can make and multiple lives just by caring.

The story follow the protagonist Ed Kennedy a 19 year old cab driver whose life is changed after a bank robbery. Soon, he begins to receive tasks to deliver no physical messages. Right away he beings to question who is sending him these tasks, but it did not take long for him to realize that refusing to deliver a message is not an option. For Ed, figuring out what the message he must deliver is, may be a more difficult task than delivering the actual message.

Markus Zusak is a phenomenal author and I am the messenger may become one of my favorite novels of all time. This is a highly motivational novel that remains realistic, though it does have very suspenseful parts. This is one of those stories that just makes you feel good afterwards. I recommend this novel to anyone 14 and over.

A 200ft deep sink-hole swallowed up a three buildings!

2

On June 2nd, 2010, the enormous crater appeared in the Central American country’s capital, Guatemala City, as it was being ravaged by torrential rain and mudslides during Tropical Storm Agatha.

After reading this article by Daniel LeClair, I learned that Agatha, the first named storm of the 2010 Pacific season, slammed into Guatemala and neighbouring El Salvador at the weekend, dumping more than three feet of rain in the region.

The enormous crater appeared while the city was being ravaged with high winds, torrential rain and deadly mudslides. Witnesses claim at least one man was in the three-storey building when it was swallowed up at a downtown intersection, and others remain missing.

Agatha has killed at least 146 people across Central America, and has sparked fears for the economies of Guatemala and El Salvador – as there has been widespread damage to the coffee crop in both countries.  The article included tons  of powerful information:

I’ve got no one to help me. I watched the water take everything,’ said Carlota Ramos in the town of Amatitlan near the Guatemalan capital, crying into her hands outside her brick house almost completely swamped by mud.

As the sun came out, exhausted rescue workers hauled away stones and tree trunks from crushed houses as they fought to reach wounded people and find dozens still missing.

At least 123 people have died in Guatemala, and 59 others are missing, according to the government. Nine people were killed in El Salvador and 14 in Honduras, including a woman who was electrocuted as she was helped from her flooded home.

Helicopters ferried tents and medical supplies to remote towns on Guatemala’s Pacific coast and the first foreign aid began to flow in on Monday.

The U.S. government donated $113,000 to pay for emergency supplies and to charter private helicopters to assist in the relief effort. The Guatemalan government is expected to formally appeal for aid today.

More than 94,000 people have been evacuated from the capital.

Sink holes can appear suddenly but are thousands of years in the making, geologists said.

The gaping holes are usually caused by rainwater gradually eating away at porous rock such as limestone below the surface, weakening it, and creating a honeycomb of caverns and caves which can become packed with mud. Floodwater may have flushed away that mud – leading everything above it to collapse.  (source)

“The Only Thing You Truly Own…”

I stumbled across the other day… and for some reason it really stuck with me. It is a painting done by Andre Jordan, titled Extraordinary Mind.

Extraordinary Mind

If this catches your interest, you can check out the rest of his work on his website. I actually own his book, Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now, although I’m not sure why…I think I bought it on a whim a while back. =]

This painting/quote is simple and to the point…do you find it meaningful?

Parks Celebrate 100 Years

1

“On Monday April 12, 2010, The City of Calgary Parks was proclamated by City Council for 100 years”

In celebration, the City of Calgary is bringing you a bunch of neat programming for the summer. They’ve got a geocaching challenge going on (no GPS, no problem – head to the library), and will be hosting free concerts in parks across the city. The first concert features Michael Bernard Fitzgerald, the Ramblin’ Ambassadors, and Camie Leard in Baker Park on June 20th. And those weird orange poles in Olympic Plaza? That’s just one of six installations of “Landscapes of Celebration”. For more information about the goings-on, check out the Facebook page.

The Karate Kid

After “The Spy Next Door,” Jackie Chan immediately shot a new movie with Jaden Smith that’s coming out on June 11th. It’s about twelve years old Dre Parker, who moves with his mother to China, ready to start a new life. He falls in love with his classmate, Mei Ying, but due to the cultural differences, he realizes that this friendship is impossible. There is a bully called Cheng, who also likes Mei Ying, and Dre’s feelings for Mei Ying come with trouble. Cheng beats Dre very easily, since China is the land of kung fu, and with no friends in this land, Dre is lost. Luckily, he meets an older man, Mr. Han, who is willing to teach Dre kung fu. With the help for Mr. Han, Dre starts to understand kung fu is about maturity and calm, and he is ready to face the bully.

Skate the Day Away

1

It’s nearly summer, which means you’ll want to be anywhere but indoors.

If you love to skateboard or rollerblade, I’m sure you’ll be pumped to hear that community mobile skate parks will be popping up all over the city beginning later this month!

The mobile parks will be open from 1pm-8pm daily (except on Sundays at the leisure centres, when they’ll only be open until 6pm), so you’ll have plenty of time to ride the fun-boxes with rails, wall rides,  pyramids with rails, quarter-pipes, and half pipes that these parks will offer.

Plus, access to the parks is absolutely, 100% FREE – which is way more than you can say for a lot of other summer activities.

Not really sure how to skateboard?  The City of Calgary’s got you covered with lessons at the mobile skate parks starting at $40 for two days worth of lessons, and camps will be offered at Shaw Millennium Park!

If you’re a pro at skateboarding, there’ll be a bunch of competitions you can compete in, including the Mission Open – Skateboard Contest Series, with events happening all over the city.

For a complete list of where you can check out the mobile skateboard parks, see the poster above, visit the website, or call 3-1-1.

Waffle Vs. Pancake

3

Pancake: Why, hello Waffle, we meet again.  It looks as if  someone put holes in your face. Unlike you I have a nice smooth face.
Waffle: Those so called ‘holes’ help hold in the delicious syrup and toppings, genius. Your toppings and syrup slide off and goes to waste, while people can pile up many wonderful toppings without worrying about it going anywhere.

Pancake: I have a slimmer figure as I have less fat and a thinner batter.
Waffle: I generally have a thicker batter, but everyone knows fat makes things taste better, that is why those fat-free foods do not taste as good.

Waffle: I am never boring as I come in many different types. From Belgium, Liège, Hong Kong style, Scandinavian style waffles to stroopwafels, I have all the bases covered.
Pancake: I can be made into crepes, flap jacks and many more different types as well.

Pancake: I have a dense and uniform texture that people like!
Waffle: You sure are dense, but not everyone likes a plain uniform texture. I have depth, with a crunchy exterior and a soft interior whilst you are just floppy and uneven.

[youtube eDU0CTDMk2g]

Pancake: You are sometimes dry,  hard and stale.
Waffle: You can be soggy and a not fluffy but you don’t see me complaining. Plus, I have my own cool personal cooking device—the waffle iron.
Pancake: Cleaning one of those waffle irons is such a hassle. People have more fun flipping me up high in pans.

Pancake: Obviously more people prefer me over you because every year thousands of people crowd to have pancake breakfasts during the Calgary Stampede.
Waffles: This is because they didn’t have any other option to choose from!

Pancake/ Waffle: Good to see you French Toast! Help us settle this long time battle. Which is better, Pancake or Waffle?
French Toast: ….. I like you both! Let’s go for ice cream 🙂

Waffle or Pancake?

Which do you prefer?

How to Become a Millionaire: Part 1

0

A novel idea!!!

*Disclaimer: This article is just for laughs as it is a satirical piece on how “wonderful” our book society has become.*

Heylo folks! So, now that we, the world, are slowly coming out of a recession, youth are going into a new society of people, if the reader wills it, where anything may or may not go. As vague as that comment may be, just look at how our shows, music, literature and retail are keeping up. It can’t be that hard to make up a couple million bucks, could it?

Anyways, I’ll get to the first way of making money. Books. Publishing has never been harder these days, where publishers are trying to find that one iconic book (i.e. // The Serial Book Series, such as Twilight and Harry Potter). One genre that doesn’t have any trouble publishing is the new memoir genre that has become so popular in the past few years.

Most would think, we’ve had enough of memoirs, get on with it! Nope. Memoirs are at an all time peak, especially if they have things to do with drugs, alcohol, sex, and a poor child who had a messed-up childhood. Or, maybe even a doctor’s or parent’s point of view of how sobriety and rehabilitation is going. Authors and novelist, such as say Nic Sheff and James Frey (respectively) are going in depth of how messed up they are getting and how they’re treatment has been going. So, here are a few “easy steps” on how to make a New York Times bestseller!

Step 1: Get wasted / drunk in a partying horror that you may think you will never get out of. This will be like the introduction to your memoir of how a struggling teen eventually manages to get out of that situation.

Step 2: Now, this may seem a bit hard to do but, do this for five years. Ignore any help from friends and family, saying that you can get off the substances that you are currently on. This makes the reader sorry for and will be a constant page turner.

Step 3: The hardest step of all is to recover right before you die. Note that you have seen the error of your ways as “the drug addict who will do anything at all just for ‘another shot of (Name chemical substance here)’.”  This will make the reader happier as he/she will see how much the main character has changed.

Step 4: So now, after you’ve gone to numerous twelve step meetings, gone to “name substance here” anonymous meetings and such, you will start writing your memoir. This should not be too hard as the writer will recollect of what has happened for those past five years and all your troubles. Also, when coming out with it, always, ALWAYS, ALWAYS have an epilogue. The reader will be dying to find out what had happened to the addict after some odd years.

Optional: Make the whole thing a lie. Sure, do some drugs, but don’t go into extremes like that. But, for the sake of money, hope they don’t find out it’s a complete lie on Oprah (Cough, cough, James Frey, cough, cough).

These are the four to five “easy steps” to becoming a famous author or at least get onto Oprah/Ellen. The point is to write more memoirs. The only things most book clubs and readers are interested in these days are of how many have come close to the brink of death. Or just writing about anything at all (but only if you are already famous).

Too scared of the binging and overdosing? That’s no problem at all. You can always try writing something everyone already knows about. But wait, the reader asks, why on earth would we want to buy a book that we already know how it’s going to end? Easy, we have fallen into some state of depression that we will buy anything that is the secret to life the universe and everything (The Law of Attractions, not 42)

Begin by saying that you, the writer, have come up with something so amazing that will knock you right off your socks. This will perk any ears or eyes towards your book. Then tell a little bit about what the book is about. People will scoff and say “yeah right!” But secretly, they are just trying to get more out of you so they won’t have to buy the book. So, keep running the same line over and over, that this “discovery,” will change the whole world and cure itself of its depression!

One other way to make money is of the teen genre. In other words, vampires, fairies, killing each other, Yup, I said it, the cursed things that walk the earth and will not die for the next ten years. Make these books gushy with hundreds and hundreds of clichés. Heck, why not add in a couple of star crossed lovers while we’re at it. Wait, there’s more! Add a complicated word to every chapter to spice up the vocabulary. But hey, who said it has to be a real word? It could just made up and readers (mostly teens) will succumb to your writing style.

But, seriously folks, there are just way too many memoirs these days! It’s just too much! Whether it’s about a father’s compensation, doctor’s P.O.V., addict’s life story, whatever, it is just overflowing. What will future generations think of the books that we have written now, teen books and memoirs about drug addiction? We, as a generation, don’t have a single book that we can look back to and say “ah, now that’s a classic.” Granted, we do have some good books that have come in over the past few years like Happiness TM by Will Ferguson or Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, but the fact that it seems like a constant stream of these books are getting published, anyone who goes to college and gets unlucky can write a book and get it published.

All Ages “Club”

1

logo nbcThe New Black Centre for Music and Art has all ages shows every weekend, and this place is quite a jem when you consider all the clubs there are in Calgary. These days, it seems as though youth can’t see a live music performance by local musicians in a drug and alcohol free environment without spending all our university savings. Well, good news! It is the main goal of The New Black Centre to provide that space for youth. There are three all ages events happening this weekend:

Thursday, June 3rd, 7:00pm: Sojourner with Northwest, Withdrawl, Swallow Your Tongue, Profits of Crime, and Rancor

Cost: $10

Friday, June 4th, 7:00pm: Jet Black Stare with Seventh Rain, Radio For Help, and Bullets In Overdrive

Cost: $12

Saturday, June 5th, 7:00pm: Aquila with Mark of Cain, As the Romans Do, Our City Screams, and Last Horizon

Cost:$10

See you there!

Stanley Cup Final – Update

2

Two games have been played out and Chicago has triumphed in both of them; however, not by a lot.

Game 1 was played in Chicago and it was a wild one. The Hawks ended up winning 6-5, but any game with 11 goals is going to be crazy. The Flyers had the lead at a few points throughout the game, but failed to hold on to it, and the Blackhawks came back and took the game.

Game 2 was a game much tighter defensively, with Leighton of the Flyers and Niemi of the Hawks both playing fantastic. Chicago scored two goals in a span of 30 seconds in the second period, and while Philly came back with a goal in the third period and had a shot of making it 2-2, Niemi made a great save to stop it.

Although the Hawks triumphed in the first two games, the Flyers are now on home turf and ready to redeem themselves. The next game is Wednesday night at 6 pm, in Philly. It’s sure to be a good one!
