Quotes: Robert Frost

0

Yes, I kid you not, I like Robert Frost so much that I actually do have an entire page in my book filled with quotes from him… so here is an entire blog dedicated to those quotes. I’ve heard that he seemed to be a bit of a jerk while he was alive, however, I’m not entirely sure I can blame him for that, as his life was rather tragedy-ridden.

You may have seen some of these before since two of the quotes below are actually from two of his poems that we’ve featured on YAA: The Road Not Taken and Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening. Yeah, I’ll admit it, I also like Frost’s poems. Maybe I like his work so much because we share the same birth month and date… nah, just jokes, I actually do really like his work. =] And just throwing this out there in case any of you decide to look his work up, I also love After Apple Picking, Birches, and Dust of Snow, in addition to the two previously mentioned, heh.

I quite like these quotes. Maybe it’s just me, but I like the humour I’m sensing from them. You also might see some of these quotes again under other categories I have planned. But enough rambling, I’ll get to them:

A poem begins in delight and ends in wisdom.

Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or your self-confidence.

Love is an irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired.

Freedom lies in being bold.

Freedom lies in being bold.

Happiness makes up in height for what it lacks in length.

Happiness makes up in height for what it lacks in length.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I–
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Half the world is composed of people who have something to say and can’t, and the other half who have nothing to say and keep on saying it.

The world is full of willing people, some willing to work, the rest willing to let them.

The reason why worry kills more people than work is that more people worry than work.

The best way out is always through.

In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: it goes on.

In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on.

Cheers, more quotes are on their way. ; )

Free University!- Say What!?

Lund University Library

Coming up soon is the deadline for your last chance for a shot at getting a quality international education at an awesome price- FREE. University education in Sweden has always been free for Swedes and international students alike but changes are coming soon and a fee will be introduced for students from outside of Europe. The very last application round (which is also free) is nearing an end and will be closed on August 15th, 2010. This application round is for students who would like to begin studying in Sweden in January 2011. The Fall semester 2011 will be the inaugural year for the new fees which are approximated to be between 10 000- 15 000 Euros. So all you students who are looking to start University this winter don’t be afraid to check out the possibility of studying abroad. I am currently a student at Lund University in southern Sweden and have now studied there for 1.5 years. It has been an incredible experience and though there are expenses involved with traveling to Europe every semester- I’ve estimated that I am still paying less than what I would pay for tuition in my home town at the University of Calgary and significantly less if I were to study and live in another city in Canada.

So don’t hesitate to check out their universal application website (you can apply for up to 40 programs at 20 university institutions all at once for free) at https://www.studera.nu/studera/1374.html. For more information on the prospect of studying in Sweden you can also check out www.studyinsweden.se.

If you have any questions don’t hesitate to comment and I’ll answer them as soon as I can!

A Reason to Sing the Blues

0

Feel like singing the blues? Head to Altitude Art Gallery in Okotoks, where Calgary artist Earl Klatzel’s paintings depict famous blues musicians from Jimi Hendrix to Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Hellhounds On My Trail by Earl Klatzel
Hellhounds On My Trail by Earl Klatzel

Although Klatzel isn’t of African descent, he connects with African-American history and culture through blues music. His paintings provide insight into the changes that took place in the lives of African-Americans after slavery ended.

“Man, the power in that music, the feeling,” he said. “These people were slaves, these people were tortured. They had a tough life. There’s just so much feeling to it, and that’s what I try to relate in my paintings.”

His latest painting was inspired by the late Robert Johnson, based on his song “Hellhounds On My Trail” from 1937. His interpretation eludes to the ultimate reoccurring nightmare for early bluesmen.

Klatzel says, “The never-ending road of a drifting bluesman leaves him without wife, family or friends. I wanted to reflect the horrors, hardships and sorrows that created some of the music itself.”

Altitude Art Gallery is located at 11A Elizabeth Street in Okotoks, 403-995-9983.

Blend Away!

0

Ever got fed up with someone constantly talking and bragging about their golf swing, their new iPhone or their newest toy? Maybe even to the extent of thinking to …blending them?

Okay you can’t go and take someones belonging and turn it to pulp but you can see objects like a golf club and an iPhone being blended on willitblend. This is a really cool website where you can see many objects from iPads to marbles being tested in the blender! One of the most recent objects put to the wrath of the blender is the iPhone 4!

Warning: If you worship the iPhone 4 or any apple products you may not want to go further and view this video.

As a child I’ve always found watching the banana being blended in a smoothie entertaining so naturally I would love this. This website blends curiosity and hours of entertainment together so if you have time go check it out!

Happy viewing 🙂

Ptolemy’s Gate by Jonathan Stroud

0

I previously reviewed the novel “The Golem’s Eye,” part two of a series known as the Bartimaeus trilogy. This week I am reviewing Book 3 of the trilogy.

Ptolemy’s Gate takes place three years after the end of Book 2, and well… things aren’t looking good. Bartimaeus is weak and dying from being stranded in the physical world for two years, the war in America is going terribly, the commoners are rebelling against the magicians, and some powerful demons are planning a rebellion too. And there is still a conspiracy in London for Nathaniel to figure out.

In this novel, all three protagonists (Kitty, Nathaniel, and Bartimaeus) must work together if the want to keep London from burning to the ground. But is it possible for such bitter enemies to set aside their differences?

An action packed conclusion to a fantastic series. But I must say, this is definitely the darkest of the 3 books a lot of sinister things, and a lot of death (when compared to the previous novels of this trilogy).

Some people complain about the ending, but I don’t think a book needs to end with “happily ever after” in order to be good, I thought the ending was great. I would recommend this book to readers 13 and above, I give it a 5/5.

The Sledders

0

Now whether you refer to yourself as a Sledder or a Rabbit, June 30th to July 3rd you probably rolled up your jeans and dug out your best pair of converse to rock out to bands such as Why?, Girl Talk and a special performance by The Melvins on the Sled Island Mainstage. Olympic Plaza was full of people of all ages Friday and Saturday; crowding the front of the stage, and those old enough, packed the Beer Garden. It was my first time at Sled Island and I wasn’t too familiar with any of the acts, but my friends spoke pretty highly about a lot of the acts know how to put on a show you won’t soon forget.

The show started with a knock out performance by F’d Up. Lead singer, Damien Abraham, was singing while climbing the stage scaffolding and showed the crowd a little more skin than they were expecting to see. He even jumped into the crowd to join the mosh pit during their performance.

f'd up

Even when it started to rain, the crowd still stuck around. Some of them puling up their hoods and others still jumping along to the music as though nothing happened. A few of our bloggers were able to enjoy being front row while a few even attempted crowd surfing, but don’t worry everyone made it out without a scratch.

rain

The highlight of Friday night for me was definitely Girl Talk (you can check out a post about him by fellow blogger Alex). He seemed to become the highlight for everyone, as when he ran out on stage a group of people he had pulled crowd early ran out behind him. It was one of the best stage performances I have ever seen, there was confetti and toilet paper being blown into the audience and some YAA bloggers were throwing out some crazy dance moves!

girl talk

I found the crowd on Saturday seemed to be a little worn out from Friday. Sledders that partook in moshing were encouraged to start jumping by the bands and unlike Friday night there wasn’t a different array of bands playing, they all seemed to have a similar sound. But the hit of Saturday night was definitely Dinosaur Jr., legends in the punk scene. The crowd seemed to double when they were called out to the stage and an infinite respect filled the plaza.

Now Rabbits, don’t worry, Sled Island is already preparing for next year! They are already accepting band applications to play 2011 via sonicbids at early prices that last until September 20th. And if you attended an event this year, Sled Island has set up a super quick post-Sled Island Survey, and after filling it out you can enter to win a pair of passes to Sled Island 2011! But Sled Island does not stop there. Festival director Zak Pashak has shifted his focus into politics, and is running for Ward 8 Alderman. You can find out more about his race on his website.

And finally, I would love to thank Kids Up Front for providing us with the opportunity to experience Sled Island 2010! If you don’t know much about Kids Up Front, you can learn more about what they do on their website and how you can help out. They are a fantastic foundation that provides event tickets for kids who don’t always get the opportunity to experience live music, sports or theatre and if you ever find yourself with extra event tickets you can donate them to Kids Up Front.

Awesome Youth(s) in Profile: featuring Pearson’s Graduates!

So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all which may appear to give one piece of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from out encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new different sun.

Upon almost finishing up my diplomas and final exams, reflecting upon my school years at Lester B. Pearson High school, leaving is definitely going to be a tough experience for me! Having been so enthusiastically involved in so many positive and inspiring opportunities at Pearson, many memories and lessons have been ingrained into my lifestyle and well being.

Along my high school journey, I have met delightful and inspiring individuals that deviate from the norm, seeking out to create their own passions, and having chosen to pursue each of their own unique dreams and goals! Being inspired by each individual`s extraordinary tales, I have personally been grateful and privileged to interview several bright and talented youths, whom each have in their own ways, contributed to their community, invested in a brighter future and just plain makes the world a brighter and better place to be. Each individual defines their own perception of what “success“ means to them, notable achievements, and what motivates them to be an awesome youth!

Each one of them has personally touched me and had made my life more meaningful, whether they know it or not, and I believe that each and everyone one of them should not be recognized just for their academics, citizenship, philanthropy, and other notable achievements, but for also being genuinely kind and compassionate youths that never fail to bring smiles to others and their own faces!

This is my personal way of thanking each and every one of you for being positively outstanding and passionate individuals by writing extremely introspective and meaningful articles, thus raising the status of notable alumni of Lester B Pearson high school!

Look for a post depicting one or two of these exceptional youths each week!

A Journey to South Korea: Day 7

0

On day 7 of my South Korea tour I went to the aquamarine center in Coex mall. Coex mall located in Samsung station in Gangnam area. You can go at exit 5 or 6 to arrive at Coex mall. Coex mall is very big as it contains many clothing stores, a movie theater and an aquamarine center.

After I finished shopping I went to the aquamarine center which contains over 650 species and 40,000 examples of marine life. The entrance fee was 15,500 won which was about 17 dollars. I took many pictures because I thought some of the fish tanks looked very interesting. Many of the fish tanks were very colorful so you have to look carefully for fish.

Quotes: Friends and Friendship

0

I’ve been keeping a book of quotes for quite some time now…which means I’m next to always on the lookout for more quotes to add. They’re not particularly categorized in my book like I will be categorizing them here (and in my future posts), but I thought I’d share some of the ones I quite like here with everyone. These quotes below are on the topic of friends and friendship…since we’re all most likely catching up with friends or making new friends and whatnot over the summer. =]

–Aristotle

“A friend is one who knows us, but loves us anyway.”
–Fr. Jerome Cummings

–Albert Camus

“Friendship improves happiness, and abates misery, by doubling our joys, and dividing our grief.”
–Joseph Addison

“Your friends will know you better in the first minute you meet than your acquaintances will know you in a thousand years.”
–Richard Bach

“Truly great friends are hard to find, difficult to leave, and impossible to forget.”

And one more, just for kicks… ; )

“The best vitamin for making friends? B-1.”

Feel free to add more or share your favourite one! Cheers. =]
