Canon t2i Video: Venice Canal Ride

1

Recently TheGentlemanScholar posted a review on the Canon EF 50mm F1.8 Mark II lens.  I assume he shot pictures and videos on a Canon t2i.  The Canon t2i is the same camera I’ve been using and it’s fantastic!  The t2i will run you around $799 and is one of the most amazing cameras I’ve ever used.  The still camera ability is better than most point and shoot cameras.  There are lots of auto features but also lots of options to customize and set yourself.  What really sets this camera apart is it’s ability to capture video in HD, especially in low light situations.  The footage from this camera rivals most cameras, priced at $2,000 and up.

Recently, lots of sites have put the t2i up against more expensive cameras is in video challenges.  You can easily find them on Google or YouTube.  Today I wanted to show you a video I shot while in Venice during the summer.  It’s shot with the t2i using a stock lens.  It was edited in iMovie and a video filter was dropped over the footage to give it a classic feel.  Make sure you watch it in HD and let me know what you think!

Inspired: Lady Gaga Fashion Tips

0

From her Ra-ra-ra’s to her ooh-la-la’s, Lady Gaga poses as one of the biggest fashion icons to date. Although there is much controversy on her “image”, it is clear that the fashion trends reflect Lady Gaga’s outrageousness and individuality. This is not to teach you how to dress like Lady Gaga, because we all know how unpredictable that may be. But this will open a small window as to what trends Lady Gaga has brought into the fashion industry and tips on how to achieve the look.

Just from looking at the above photo of Lady Gaga, we can spot over three trends:

  • Leather/Pleather: Leather (can also be replaced with the word pleather) has made a peak ever since Lady Gaga made her first breakthrough. To date, you will be able to see plenty of leather jackets on the streets, worn by people of all ages. You can also expect to see more leather as time passes, whether it is in the form of jackets, shorts, pants, necklaces, and tops.
    Tips:

    • Ladies: Play around with leather! Another huge thing this year is to be androgynous while looking feminine and girly at the same time. Don’t be afraid to wear a ruffled dress paired off with a leather jacket, and harsh black leather shoes.
    • Men: If you ever find that the look of a leather jacket is too harsh, then go simple. Wear a plain t-shirt underneath or even a western-styled button up! Or make it comfortable by layering it with a hoodie.
  • Black-on-Black: Simple, sophisticated and classic. Aside from Lady Gaga’s extreme outfits such as “the meat dress,” full black is what she will often wear. Black-on-black has become less gothic and more trendy (giving leeway because it depends on how you wear it!).
    Tips:

    • Ladies: When wearing full black, try to avoid wearing over-pieces (other than a jacket) that are also black. One of my favourite tricks to this trend is adding accessories. I tend to tuck in my top into my black skinny jeans and wear a brown belt to tie it in. You can also go for crazy accessories such as a four-layered necklace consisting of metal, pearls, and more metal.
    • Men: As many guys have more of a relaxed style, wearing black-on-black can be uncomfortable or maybe normal. If it’s uncomfortable then try wearing a printed black shirt, that way you get colour without effort. If it is comfortable then make sure it doesn’t look tacky, e.g. wearing a baggy black tshirt with baggy black jeans.
  • Structured Shoulders: Looking back on photos from the 1930s you’ll see that many women wore large shoulder pads. Lady Gaga has brought this trend back, and many other trends from decades ago. Whether it involves structured shoulder pads, or shoulder detailing with chains and studs, the trend of shoulder detailing is growing.
    Tips:

    • Ladies: Don’t be afraid of  looking like you have large structured shoulders. This trend is still new, so it’s  most likely uncomfortable to be showing off a masculine feature. With this trend, I would suggest showing off your femininity by wearing something with structured shoulders, but with a feminine cut that shows off the waist and hips. That way you mix in that androgynous and girly look with a different approach.
    • Men: Sorry guys! You already have the shoulders, so this trend is more for the ladies. Besides, structured shoulders in blazers already exist, and are completely normal!

I know that a lot of people don’t believe that the trends revolve around Lady Gaga and that’s understandable considering how outrageous her outfits are! But within a few years, I can almost guarantee that there will be a “blast from the past” and that you’ll see women wearing all sorts of crazy things that Lady Gaga has worn before.

Cross burning? In CANADA?

0
Burnt Cross
The burnt cross. Image courtesy of CBC News.

Now that the Quran burning-ruckus has subsided, everyone can go back to living their lives, especially us Canadians. Because nothing racy EVER happens in Canada, for no where is more tolerant in the world than Canada.

So then is the following event just a misunderstanding, or just the tip of the iceburg?

Nathan Rehburg, a Nova Scotian, was recently charged with an account of hate crime. Evidence and accounts show that Rehburg had burnt a cross in front of the house of Shayne Howe and Michelle Lyon. Shayne is of African descent. The connection to the American Ku Klux Klan is almost immediately made.

Rehburg defense is claiming that it was not a racial thing, but rather he had done the act because Lyon had supposedly slandered one of Rehburg’s family members of possessing a sexually transmitted disease. He does however admit that the evidence seems to be overwhelmingly pointing to a hate crime and he is prepared for any punishment that may come with his action.

Racial or not, it seems that burning a cross or any religious or significant symbol in this day and age takes a certain bit of stupidity and rashness; perhaps a combination of the two. This was the second hate crime incident in Canada in less than a week. Maybe we need to abandon the thin shawl of perceived tolerance and take a better look at ourselves. Maybe we would learn something shocking enough that we would make us change for the better.

The Hunger Games review

0

I was persuaded by my friends to read the The Hunger Games. I finally gave in and began the book, only to finish it two days later. Needless to say, I quite enjoyed the story. The plot itself was absolutely captivating in a terrifying way. The story follows the life of Katniss Everdeen, a girl living in the 12th district of Panem. She is taken as a tribute to the Hunger Games where she must fight to the death to stay alive. I found myself staying up until the late hours of the night in an attempt to finish this book. It’s packed with action and even a bit of romance. This books puts you on the edge, to the point where you can’t put it down. I strongly recommend that you read this book.

Blood types and your love (3)

0

If your blood type is O

If your love’s blood type is A, your index of love is 90-95%

The best combination that you can reach to marriage! Cool type O and tranquil A makes the better combination. They usually fall in love at first sight. They are the ideal boyfriend and girlfriend for each other! If there’s gap between their age, they are predestined to have a relationship!

If your lover or love’s blood type is B, your index of love is 75-80%

Don’t be frustrated – guys are actually interested in you! Blood type O guys, if you meet type B girls, you guys will strongly be attracted to one another!

If your lover or love’s blood type is AB, your index of love are 30%/80%

Girls! you can be frustrated by gruff AB guys! AB guys don’t open their mind easily. Here’s the tip to success – don’t hesitate and rush your love but calm down and find the chance! Once they open their mind, they are nice and sweet! Cheer up! If you are a man, your love index with AB girl is 80%!! The innocent and naiive speech of type O guys makes AB girls trust them.

If your lover or love’s blood type is O, your index of love is 40%

What a risky love! Pushing and pulling each other could be good to identify your love, however if there’s nothing good, end things. Why don’t you try to concede each other?

Restaurant Spotlight: Boston Pizza

1
The Sicilian Thin Crust Pizza

Three days after my own birthday and the day after my friend’s, my parents took us out to Boston Pizza to celebrate with a meal.

For appetizers we had nachos, which would have been good if not for the cheese; it seemed too much like liquid to me, and the salsa was much too spicy for my tongue.

My friend and I decided to share the Sicilian Thin Crust Pizza. It tasted even better than it looked. If you love fresh black olives, you’ll love this pizza. The main course deserved a ten out of ten for sure.

For dessert I had a chocolate brownie explosion, which included vanilla ice cream so I wasn’t so overwhelmed with the chocolate fudge.

The service was pretty good; nothing out of the ordinary and all the staff were polite and happy. I appreciated that they treated me with respect as their customer. I was pretty impressed by the cleanliness of the place, especially the restroom. There was antibacterial soap too!

Overall I would rate this restaurant three out of five. I liked the food and everything but the atmosphere for me was a bit hectic with many families with little kids running around.

World Expo in Shanghai China

0

On Oct. 31, the World Expo finally closed in Shanghai, China. The World Expo is a place for the world to join together and share our culture and technologies. Over the 184 days, there were about 70 million people from all over the world participating in this “Better city, better life” themed event.

http://image.xinmin.cn/2010/05/06/20100506223025945023.jpg

For the past 150 years, many ideas, technology and culture began in the World Expo. Cars, televisions, lights, elevators and other major inventions all made their first appearance at the Expo. For China, a developing country, to host the 2010 World Expo meant to exchange culture and cooperate with other countries to build a world platform. It is to further strengthen the relationship with the world, and an important opportunity to learn.

In the 2010 Expo, many countries brought their own uniqueness to the stage. And for those who didn’t have a chance to go (like me) here is a chance to view some of them.

First is the China Pavilion

It’s About Time!

0
Courtesy of Liz Goodwin "Nicest Canadian couple in world dole out lottery winnings" Yahoo News

I was watching the movie the Bucket List on TV last night and it made me think, what was on my bucket list? I know I wanted to become famous and be a billionaire. But strangely I always wanted to win the lottery and donate a majority of the winnings to charity and schools. It looks like I was beat to it!

Out of the blue, a MSN messenger news feed displayed an article about a couple who donated a majority of their winnings! Retired Canadian couple Allen and Violet Large donated 98 per cent of their 11.3 million dollar winnings. This story is truly breath taking. I always thought, why would anyone who is rich keep so much of their money when there are so many people out in the world that don’t have any? I know I sound naive and maybe hypocritical by saying that I would donate a lot of my money if I was a billionaire, but none the less it has always been a dream of mine. It warms my heart and moves me to see that there are still good people out in the world. The generous couple as stated by the Chronicle Herald have donated the money to fire departments, churches, cemeteries, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, hospitals in Truro and Halifax, where Violet underwent her cancer treatment, and organizations that fight cancer, Alzheimer’s and diabetes. The list goes on and on.

A quote that Violet Large told to a reporter was that “What you’ve never had, you never miss.” They were not a rich couple, and they were not dealt the best hand in life, and they somehow found the goodness in their heart to donate that large sum of money. God bless them.

The Liar Got Owned

0

This University of Calgary play takes place in the 19th century, where a man named Lelio just can’t stop telling lies! Oh, but he calls them “Witty Inventions.”

This production did what it was supposed to: it kept me entertained all night. I even held my breath at some points, it was hard just to look away! Even the intervals were hilarious; I and the entire crowd joined the cast in singing “That’s Amore” and watched them perform acrobatics!

The cast of this play sure had the over-acting part of it down, it was fantastic the way they did so! Also I want to point out that they had segways that actually made sense, which doesn’t occur that often.

The acting was amazing, the cast were perfect for their parts.  The entire production was crazy good! I loved every second of it. I would pay to watch the sequel for sure!!

Far East Movement

1

Have you guys ever heard about the “Like a G6” song by Far East Movement?

Like a G6 ranked number 1 on the US. billoard Hot 100 for the week ending Oct. 30, 2010.  Even ‘Like a G6’ allowed Far East Movement to recieve the ‘Airplan Gainer’ award during its week upon the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The thing makes me so proud of it is that they are all Asian (including KOREAN). If you guys check Like a G6’s music video, the restaurant they are eating at is a Korean restaurant and the food they are eating is Korean food.

Check these cool things in the music video out! Enjoy!

Giving Gifts…

0
Click the image to see the eHow article: How to Wrap a Gift

It was my birthday recently, and, as I had a party, I received presents. It was interesting to see what my friends thought to get me, and I thought back to their birthdays and what I got them. So often I hear my friends complain, “Oh, I don’t know what to get him, he’s so hard to buy for!” and, “She won’t tell me what she wants!” The truth is, it can be really hard to get presents for your friends.

#1 Tip: Keep a list going (I find my iPod Note app is good for this) of present ideas.
Ie: Mom: framed family photo, facial gift certificate, recipes
Tyler: Motorcycle calenders, Lazer pointer, poster of his favourite band (Kiss)
Sarah: Chocolate-covered things, lava lamp, book of monologues for her acting, etc. etc. etc.

#2 Tip: Know where your friends like to shop, because, in the end, everyone likes gift cards.
However, for close friends, it is nice to be thoughtful, so be careful. If you do get them a gift card, get a thoughtful gift card, such as a gift card to Starbucks if the two of you go there to chat over coffee often.

#3 Tip: Don’t Leave the Shopping ’till the Last Minute
I’m notorious for this; most teenagers are, I feel. But Christmases are a lot more fun if you’re not panicking because you feel bad about your last-minute gifts. So, start early. If it’s June and you see something your sister would LOVE, buy it, and save it ’till Christmas, or her birthday, or whatever. It’ll pay off.

#4 Tip: Know Their Interests
My teacher is well-known as a Beatles fan, so every year-end there’s a stack of Beatles-related merchandise on his desk. Beyond that, he’s very into sports, and receives tickets to Stampeders’ Games. My friend Josh is a huge Bob Dylan fan, which opens up a huge realm of Bob Dylan-related presents. My friend Lauren plays the guitar and loved getting a tuner for her birthday. Not only do people like gifts related to their interests, it shows that you pay attention to them.

#5 Tip: Play on Inside Jokes and Common Experiences
My friend Janelle was constantly late last year, so for her birthday, I bought her an alarm clock as a joke. For my birthday, my friends Anna and Vitalik got me a compilation of the New York Times Comics to get hyped for our trip to New York this spring. I got my dad a cook book for Father’s Day after he got a new BBQ.

Creative Ideas to Get You Started:
Make them a personalized T-shirt
Make them a photo gift.
Take them out.

Comment Question:
What kind of presents do you like to get?
