Ways to Wear it: 7 Different Ways to Wear A Scarf

1

When winter first began I received a request on the different ways to wear a scarf. I thought it would be really difficult to explain how to wear them because of the complicated  instructions it requires, but thought it was an amazing idea. I found a great video that shows a few different ways to wear a scarf, some of them that are very unique and all of them are easy!

[youtube KzPV0iXBANs]

What to wear them with:

Scarves look good with almost everything! You can wear them with any sort of shirt (v-neck sweater, t-shirt, thermals, etc.) layer it with sweaters and cardigans, wear them with dresses (possibly using it as shawl) or blazers. The only tricky part is how you wear it, and with what. Most of the time any way is great for any top, but for example, when paired with a blazer, it should be a thin, sleek, and translucent so that it compliments the whole outfit rather than overpowering it. The great thing about scarves is that you could be wearing an outfit consisting of all black, and add a pop of colour  by adding a bright red scarf.

My favourite types of scarves:

  • A rising trend is the infinity scarf otherwise known as the circle scarf. I’ve been wearing these since the winter of last year and they’ve become one of my staple pieces for this season. I love having it look chunky and big around my neck, as opposed to wearing it in the short loop, long loop formation. They are especially warm and effortless to wear.
  • I love ruffle scarves! I find myself reaching for one of these almost daily, because they give me the same chunky feel as an infinity scarf but with some femininity. It’s possibly get the best of both worlds when they are combined to create a ruffly circle scarf.
  • Neutrals have been a great colour scheme for this season especially because of the ongoing army trend. I normally wear all black because I like wearing dark colours, so when I discovered chocolate brown scarves this season, I couldn’t help but love them.

I love wearing scarves, and I know that they are everywhere. I almost feel like you must wear one if you are wearing a pea-coat (dressy coat, often seen with double-breasted buttons).  They are extremely versatile, can compliment any outfit and most of all, warm!

What is Socialism?

0

Like capitalism, socialism is another commonly used word in politics. But this word has been misused to such a great extend that it is seen as synonymous with communism.

Socialism is the economic system where the means of production and resources are publicly owned. Citizen may work to produce the goods and services but the final profit goes to the owner which in this case is the government.

Therefore socialism is the economic system where the industry and corporations are owned by the government. A socialist is a believer in public (government) ownership.

But socialism is not communism. Communism is a political system and economic system whereas socialism is just an economic system. This means that socialism may be the preferred economic system for communism but socialism does not make any political implications and can therefore be the economic system of a democratic nation.

Beauty

1

Sometimes our perception of beauty is changed because of what the media wants us to think. They place super skinny starved girls in magazines, telling us that’s the “right” way to look. No matter what size you are, how much you weigh, what clothes you wear or what you look like, you are beautiful. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise, ever.

What is Capitalism?

6

Capitalism is the preferred system in wealthy, democratic nations. It is a word that used a lot in politics. Unfortunately, it is often misused which causes false ideas about the implications of capitalism and what defines a capitalist.

Capitalism is the economic system based on private ownership of the means of production which leads to the profit of the owner. The actual production, distribution, and price are determined by the free market (supply, demand, and trade with minimal government interference).

Therefore capitalism is an economic system where businesses and corporations are owned buy individuals rather than the government. A believer in private ownership rather than government ownership is a capitalist.

But some say that capitalism is more than just an economic system. They call it a socio-economic system because capitalism is also an interpretation of social organization base on the individual’s right to economic freedom.

Keeping those Resolutions

2

Happy New Year!
Like many of you, I have made some new years resolutions this year. Of course, I’ve started thinking about all my past new years resolutions, particularly the failed ones. This year, I’d like to keep at least one of my resolutions. We make them because they’re usually goals we would really like to accomplish: getting in shape, improving our posture, being friendlier, fighting with our parents less, eating more nutritious food, etc. The trouble with such resolutions is that they’re not quantitative; it’s hard to measure our progress, and it’s so easy to just forget about them. This year, after some research and some hard thinking,  and I’ve come up with a few tips on keeping those resolutions:

Fill in your resolutions on post-it notes! Photo by Wirawat Lian-udom

1) Get specific and write them down. If your goals are vague and unrecorded, you’re less likely to remember them six months from now. If you have them written down concisely and in a prominent spot, not only will you be reminded constantly, you’ll know exactly what you have to achieve. For example, instead of just thinking “get in shape,” find a piece of paper and write, “By the end of June 2011, be able to run 3 km without stopping,” and tape it to your bathroom mirror.

2) Make a daily checklist. I got this idea from The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. Her goal was to increase her happiness through various methods, or resolutions. (Like  keeping the house tidy, laughing more, sleeping enough, etc.) It was a good book and I really recommend it. However, one thing she found was that she was a lot more successful if she made up a “report card” for herself. She called it the “gold star” method, relating back to elementary when you got stickers for doing well. A lot of people respond to this reward-based method, and it really forces you to think about your goals everyday. Get a calender on your computer, type in your resolutions and put check boxes on every day, then print it. At the end of every day, check off the boxes you accomplished. For example, if you went on a run, check-off  “Do Something Active.”

3) Tell people. The more you are held accountable for your goals, the more likely you’ll get to them. If your parents and friends all know about your resolutions, you’ll feel like you have to do it or else you’ll embarrass yourself.

4) Team up. If your resolution is to eat more nutritious food, tell your family. Get everyone in on it. Your parents will buy more healthy groceries, and you can even ask them to help you learn to cook more nutritious meals and snacks instead of KD or microwave popcorn. Get your friends to do it too, and maybe you can all start eating at Subway instead of McDonalds.

Brazilian Beach- A photo my sister Tania took. My family is going to go visit her in Brazil in February and we all want to work on our "beach bods."

5) Have an incentive and keep that in mind. For example, my parents want to get in shape for our trip to Brazil this year, and so whenever an opportunity to exercise comes up, they talk about Brazil and it motivates them. Or you can promise yourself an entirely unrelated reward, like a shopping spree next boxing day if you keep your room clean all year.

6) Stick to it. Even if you’re unsuccessful for the fist six months, different opportunities may present themselves later. Maybe your goal is to get in shape, but you don’t do much for the first few months of 2011. Then in the summer, you’re offered a job in construction that involves a lot of physical labour. So instead of taking that job at McDonalds you were considering, you start working in construction. By the time September rolls around, you’re more physically fit than you could have hoped for. Just because you fail to keep your resolutions the first few days or weeks of 2011 does not mean they are impossible goals. Stick to it, and learn the satisfaction of keeping a new years resolution.

Good luck! May we all keep our resolutions and accomplish those goals.

Video of The Day: Homeless Man with an Amazing Radio Voice

0

When you look at the man in the video you would imagine a scruffy tattered voice, but when he opens his mouth you are taken aback by his amazing radio voice. Before this video no one knew who this Ted Williams character was, but once this video went viral he got 70-80 job offers, a big promotion from pan-handling at the side of a highway. His rise to fame was spurred on by Reddit, a user-run news community who made his story famous throughout the web. As stated on mashable.com, Ted Williams has received offers from the NFL and Cleavland Cavaliers. He is now employed by Quicken Loans where they have even helped find him a house. It just goes to show how much power the internet has.

Human are descended from fish?

2

Since it was the last week of the first semester, I learned about ecology as the last unit of my Bio 20 class. From this last unit, I learned amazing knowledge about our ancestors.

Charles Darwin who was an English naturalist, established the hypothesis that all species of life (four legged creatures) have descended over time from common ancestry (ocean creature) due to the evolution from a process of natural selection. It was shocking to me since I was only aware of the evolution of man from apes.

It is hard for us to think any connection to ocean creatures between us or even between any other four legged creatures on the land. However, the connection actually does exist. Elaborate technologies nowadays are looking for the evidence of Darwin’s theory and due to the video clip that I watched in my class, Darwin’s theory is getting assured by the evidence of similar structures of DNA that we have and that fish have. It explains that human are not superior but we are only the part of nature.

See the videos that provides further explanation about this theory.

Learn Something Old at the Glenbow Museum!

Polish Szopka Puppet Theatre, Special Collection and Courtesy of the Glenbow Museum

The Glenbow Museum is simply one of the best places to visit in Calgary, and I’m not saying this just because I’m currently pursuing a History degree or because I am an amateur artist, but because there is always something amazing for everyone in one of the many exhibits at the Glenbow Museum. The Glenbow Museum displays over 80 incredible Asian sculptures, houses the oldest mineral in the world and is home to over 28,000 works of art in its collection. This museum presents, in a combination of astounding artifacts and art pieces, the amazing culture and heritage of Western Canada, while providing glimpses of extraordinary societies and cultures around the world. One of the largest museums in Canada, the Glenbow Museum houses an art gallery, a museum, library and archives containing a broad collection of historical documents, all under one roof.

Emily Carr, Among the Fir, 1931, Courtesy of the Glenbow Museum

Climbing up the massive spiral staircase, circling around a most impressive and  illuminate standing crystal sculpture, WeiJia (a fellow blogger) and I clambered up to the second floor which displayed the exhibits of modernist art, historical art and the “Many Faces, Many Paths: Art of Asia” exhibit. The modernist art collection displays the modernist era from the early 20th century up to 1938. Dynamically arranged, over 80 works of art feature the styles from realism to abstraction.  WeiJia and I were particularly enthralled by Emily Carr’s piece Among the Fir. We were immediately drawn to the artist’s passion of the depiction of the majesty of the BC rainforest, evoking the elements of vibrancy and unity. The Historical Art exhibit ranges from the 18th century to the early 20th century and features the themes of fur trading, First Nations, landscape and portraits, with remarkable juxtapositions of style, interpretation and size.

Ways to Wear it: Layering Tops with Dresses

0

There are many different ways to wear a dress. For most of us, we spend time picking it out then throw it on and wear it how it was meant to be worn, alone. Which is definitely an amazing way to wear a dress, and is a classic, so you can never go wrong doing so. But I’m sure this way to wear the dress is not so typical. So, what does it mean to layer dresses and tops? Well the easiest way is to wear the dress underneath and throw a shirt just on top to make it look as though it’s a skirt. But here is where I got my inspiration for this specific idea:

Top layered with a dress
This is Carly Christman. She is one of my favourite YouTube gurus to watch, with a unique and edgy style.

Why did this look inspire me?

Not only is it different, interesting and beautiful, but it also allows you to play with your clothes, dress up or dress down any dress, or simply give it another look. I thought that it stepped out of the box but only a little, so that it can still appeal to a lot of people and still look cute. This look is extremely easy to achieve and allows us to have a bit of fun with our outfits.

What I suggest:

The example I have shown above is self-explanatory. You can easily do this by wearing a shirt underneath and a dress over top.  However there is a fine line between a fashion fop-ah and a cute outfit, so here are a few tips:

  • Don’t be afraid to wear any dress! It doesn’t HAVE to be a black tank dress, but at least you know it works. Strapless dresses are the most difficult, especially ones with a sweetheart (heart shaped) neckline. The best advice is to try it out at home, and judge for yourself whether it looks okay or not.
  • Avoid wearing a solid t-shirt underneath!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I stress this idea) I know it may be tempting and you may have a lot of them; but before you reach for a solid t-shirt, opt for wearing the dress alone or with a cardigan instead for an extra layer.
  • That brings up the next tip, avoid wearing solids underneath. This is because solid pieces of clothing can take away from the dress and the look overall, rather than enhancing it. The Opacity creates harsh lines, and a background, but not a good one. If you were to wear solids then make sure it is NOT cotton, because cotton is typical which is not what this look aims for, and is extremely harsh.
  • Try wearing tops that are translucent, like lace, burnout or very light tops. This is because it contrasts with the solidity of the dress, and will help connect you back to the way the dress was “meant to be” worn.
  • Tank tops also do very well, especially with another tank dress. With different thicknesses, colours and patterns, you can change the way a dress looks by adding extra straps and a spark of change.

My Final Thoughts:

This look is very easy, but may take a little bit of effort to manipulate. Take your time, and if you ever need help, ask a few honest friends to see what they think. They may say it’s weird, but thats OK, you might expect that from a look not a lot of people have taken on. As long as they say it’s not ugly, then you know you’ve done something right. Or you can feel free to take a picture and link me your take and ask questions if necessary!

A Legacy to be Remembered

TRON
TRON. Image from New York Univerisity Media Research Lab

In 1982 a movie was released by Disney. While memorable, it was not a traditional Disney cartoon based on a more-or-less famous fairy tale. The movie told of a world not far in the future where anthropomorphic computer programs lived in a digital realm and where a sentient program has turned the realm into a totalitarian society. The protagonist Kevin Flynn, played by Jeff Bridges, enters this world by accident and makes the decision to save this virtual world along with a security program named TRON, designed by Flynn’s friend working at the software company ENCOM. Though the plot was paper-thin, the revolutionary 3D computer modeling, light-cycles, disk-battles, and the digital fantasy of the integration of human beings into a virtual world left a deep impression to those who watched it. Almost 30 years later, the cult classic would finally receive a sequel.

TRON: Legacy
TRON: Legacy. Image from http://1.bp.blogspot.com/

The Grid: a digital frontier. I tried to picture cluster of information as they move through a computer. What would they look like? Ships? Motorcycles? With a circuits-like street-way? I kept dreaming of a world I thought I’d never see. And then, one day, I got in.

Those were the words of Kevin Flynn coupled with music arranged by Daft Punk as the title sequence for TRON: Legacy came into view and having watched the first movie, I knew picking to see this movie during winter break over Gulliver’s Travels was the right decision.

This movie was a great sequel to the original TRON movie, albeit taking almost 30 years to make. The plot isn’t paper-thin, its more like the thickness of construction paper this time… Ok so the plot still isn’t as deep to something similar in its niche like the Matrix Trilogy, but it is sufficient to drive the movie along as the senses are overloaded by both the visual and the audio. Visually the movie was fantastic, being able to keep a lot of the original designs and concept arts, yet using newer technology to make the world seem more real and technological with grand scenes designed to amaze. Those scenes would only be mediocre had they not been coupled with music by Daft Punk, who integrated their electronic music into their own orchestral compositions to achieve a unique sci-fi feel.

One interesting thing I found within the movie is the concept of isomorphism (semi-spoilers coming up.) ISOs were the race of programs Flynn found that were perfect within the realm and was what sparked the central conflict within the movie. Based on the mathematical idea of isomorphism, the ISOs could be interpreted to be the ideological symbol of human beings in the real world. Interestingly, Flynn has a revelation in the movie and that is perfection is unachievable, yet always within our grasps. If the ISOs are representative of human beings, then the revelation can be interpreted to be that human beings, despite all of our fallacies, are perfect. Quite a powerful moment as Flynn rides the Solar Sailor with his son, whom he has not seen for 20 years.

If you are the type of person who believes a good movie should be based most strongly on plot, then you might find TRON: Legacy to be a mediocre movie. Nevertheless, I do recommend this movie as the sensual experience is well worth the ticket price.

Late Post: Happy Eco-Holidays!

Some things about the holidays just can’t go forgotten; lights, cookies, a tree, presents and turkey are a few staples that will appear in thousands of homes during the holiday season.  The impact these staples have on the environment, however, can very easily be looked over.  These things that represent the holidays for so many people can be incredibly hurtful upon the environment.  So, in the spirit of the holiday season, think about the environment while you’re stuffing your face with turkey and wrapping up gifts for all your relatives.  Here are some tips to take into consideration:

  1. Use LED lights- Replace your old, inefficient regular Christmas lights with this newer version of energy-efficient ones.  LED lights look fantastic and will save you a whole lot of money and time spent replacing bulbs in the long run.
  2. Buy a real tree- You may think, isn’t buying a real tree just killing a tree and how at all is that helping the environment?  It is not widely known that for each tree harvested at a tree farm, another 10 are planted in order to ensure a crop every year.  So, as ironic as it may sound, cutting down one tree will save more.
  3. Wrap presents in newspaper- With a nice bow or piece of ribbon on top, this technique can actually look quite fantastic.  It is much more unique than the usual Christmas wrapping paper and avoids hordes of paper being thrown out that were admired for a couple seconds before being ripped to pieces.
  4. Buy an organic turkey- holiday dinner is something that we all look forward to immensely each year.  The Holidays might not be the same without a turkey, but buying that turkey organic shouldn’t change a thing.  Organic turkeys are healthier, do not have toxins, and taste even better than your normal grocery store brand!
  5. Use natural and organic ingredients in your holiday baking- Those shortbread cookies, butter tarts, and chocolate truffles do not need to be rid of in order to have an eco-friendly holiday season.  Some small adaptations can be made to them to minimize the impact your Christmas baking has on the environment.  Use all-natural and organic ingredients in your baking; it will make them healthier, and will alleviate some of the guilt felt whilst eating them!
