Nowadays it’s tough to find good, independent and fun games, especially on a tight budget. What with flashy shooters such as Call of Duty or Battlefield, often the simpler games go forgotten; games that allow you to sit down and play without being assaulted by a cacophonous slew of explosions and flashing lights. And so I present to you Jay Is Games, a website which finds, filters and reviews  free, quality games for the casual gamer. Unlike other websites, the games presented on Jay is Games are safe for work and home. The games are also virus and malware free. Upon entering the aesthetically appealing website, you are presented with the featured game review for that day. Off to the side, you can choose from your favorite saved games, or scroll through the top rated and recommended game choices. Most of the video games run simply on Flash or Java, both of which are free, and are usually already installed on your computer. If, however, you wish to play games without the use of an internet connection, there is also a section on the top bar where you can peruse various downloadable games. Included amongst the variety of games genres presented overall are:

Sample Flash Game
  • Escape the Room games
  • Puzzle games
  • Adventure games
  • Hidden Object games
  • Strategy games
  • Shooter games
  • Platform games
  • Point-and-Click games
  • Action games
  • Simulation games

There is even a section for mobile gaming, so even whilst you are on your cell phone, you can waste ungodly amounts of time on a series of bits and bytes that mean essentially nothing more in the grand scheme of things than to provide you with fleeting entertainment. If you are anything like me when playing puzzle games, you might get stuck. If so, fear not, for there are in-depth staff- and reader-provided walkthroughs to either guide you by the hand or provide you with subtle hints to get you going on your way.

Happy Gaming!

Derek Brown’s Academy of Driving Review

2

Courtesy of Signal SafeWhen I was looking for a driving school last year, it was hard for me to decide between price versus quality. On one end of the spectrum there was an extremely pricey AMA driving school that had magnificient reviews. On the other end, tiny family-owned driving schools pop up left, right and centre.

I decided to take the middle road. Instead of going with either choice, Derek Brown’s Academy of Driving provided friendly, clear and informative in-class sessions despite the dry and redundant course load. During my in-car lessons I was pleased to have such a caring driving instructor; someone who actually knew my name, tried to have fun with the job and did not dread being in a car with an inexperienced driver.  The whole company expressed great care to the well-being of the students. Every instructor actually wanted each student to take information away from the school.

I would highly recommend Derek Brown’s Academy of Driving to anyone who is looking for a driving school. For the quality of learning they provide at their price points it would be absurd to choose anywhere else in Calgary. Besides, I am sure that everyone has seen a Derek Brown car driving around the city somewhere so it must be a good sign that I am not the only one who has faith in their driving school.

University Spotlight: McGill University

0

McGill; colloquially nicknamed “Harvard of the North.” McGill University boasts one of the strongest academics of any university in Canada. It boasts an enrollment of over 35,000 students on a campus located in Montreal, Quebec. For many, it is the pinnacle of academic excellence and achievement in Canada. With numerous decorated faculty, a vivid student community and strong athletics program,  McGill University offers something for everyone.

Many students that go to McGill have all said the same thing: that going to McGill is like entering a city inside of a city.  The camaraderie of the community is renowned throughout Canada, and is one of the reasons that many high schoolers list McGill as one of the top choices to apply to university. The campus is situated in downtown Montreal, surrounded by many pubs, eateries and cafes, perfect to spend an afternoon at.

A typical street scene in

For those who are scared of going to a city where the majority language is French, don’t worry. McGill offers a full English campus, and courses are taught in English. The neighborhoods surrounding the university campus are bilingual and offer a rare opportunity to experience Quebec culture while maintaining comfortable communication in English.

Academically, McGill offers a university that has developed the most Nobel Prize Laureates out of any school in the country, and offers in excess of 300 degree programs. It offers a unique opportunity to learn and study at one of the leading research schools in Canada.

Overall, for those wishing to spend university life at a culturally vibrant, diverse and unique campus, while studying at a school renowned for its academic success, McGill should be the school to consider.

SaM’s Serving of NeRd: TI-84 Plus and Silver Edition FIRMWARE UPDATE

0

YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY!! Now, you may currently be feeling many angry thoughts, such as “SaM, why would you not have told us BEFORE the Math 30 Diploma?! This could have saved me!” and “I don’t know what Firmware means!!!” But hey, if any of these thoughts, or many possible others (and I’m sure you don’t actually want to know the number of possibilities [NO! NOT PERMS & COMBS!!!]), ran through your head, please don’t fret or send me hate comments. In fact, I didn’t even use any of the cool new functions (other than fractions) for the Diploma. *deep breaths* It’s all good 😉

Recently, Texas Instruments came out with an update for the TI-84 Plus and Silver Edition models (sorry TI-83ers!) a couple of weeks ago, and I have to say, it is pretty amazing. Like O.M.G. amazing. So what does this beautiful software do? How do these functions sound: sigma notation (insert it as you see it on your page, letters and all, and it will give you the answer), logs with any base (fill in the base you want–not just 10!!!), and the simple, yet wonderful, fractions (why have annoying slashes in the way? As an added benefit, answers are in fraction form as well). If you aren’t as excited as I am… well… don’t download it, I suppose. You’ll be missing out.

Did I mention it keeps excellent time? I forgot my watch and my school doesn’t have a clock in the gym (why? I don’t know :P), so being the nerd that I am, I just used my calculator. **NOTE: make sure you reset your clock after you download the update!!!!

Does this (AND MORE) sound good? Go download it from TI’s website! For the direct link to the software page, click here 😀 . Make sure that you download TI Connect for Window or for Mac beforehand! (there’s a link for this at the top of the page in the “click here” link.)

If you are a TI-83 Plus kinda person, there was a software update waaaaay back in 2006 (holy transistors, that was 5 years ago D:). I would assume that your calculator would have this update, but it doesn’t hurt to check 😉 You can find this update by clicking here.

On a final note, the update will not spontaneously combust when you reset your calculator for exams. It’s a firmware, meaning it is FIRMly placed inside your calculator and will not disappear. All is well 🙂

GOOD LUCK WITH THE REST OF YOUR EXAMS 😀 Enjoy the days before school starts up again. Need something to do? Download some apps for your calculator (they have games!!) and play around 😉 [final final note: downloaded apps will disappear when your calculator is reset, but you can easily redownload them!]

The Magic, the Mind, and the Mystery of Joshua Jay

Courtesy of Joshua Jay's official website

Joshua Jay doesn’t do magic tricks; he does magic effects. The mystifying magic Joshua Jay does is simplistic, modern and amazing. Right in front of an interactive crowd, Joshua Jay literally has created his own brand of “magic” that transforms spectators to be participants, for it be fun and engaging, and most of all, he is a brilliant and inspirational role model and teacher.

Joshua Jay is quite an accomplished magician, as a “performer, lecturer, author, and photographer of all things mysterious” in his biography by John Armato, and is well-known and well-respected internationally. In 1998, he was crowned champion at the World Magic Seminar and he’s a headliner at the prestigious Magic Castle in Hollywood. He’s also the author of two best selling books, one of them, Magic: The Complete Course, and has been translated in English, French, Italian, Russian, and Mandarin. Pretty impressive.

Courtesy of Joshua Jay's official website

Admittedly, I’m an eager magic enthusiast, not necessarily an amateur magician, but magic is definitely a pasttime. I love to read up on it and practice. Unsuccessfully perusing and browsing for a particular book that revealed the art of “street” magic, Joshua Jay’s book plus DVD- Magic: The Complete Course found me. Inside was combined expertise, full colour photographs and clear, precise step by step instructions to 100 magic tricks, with 75 of them demonstrated on the DVD by the charismatic Joshua Jay Jay himself. It was exactly the magic “tricks” that would impress friends and family, and the effects were  astronomical after just a couple of hours of practice! They did not include complicated sleights of hands or fancy props, just everyday household items and up close and personal magic that cause tremendous astonishment.

But wait, isn’t this exposing his magic? Couldn’t one just watch his magic lessons on YouTube? NO, to both! Trust me, I have watched all of Joshua Jay’s publicized performances that he has made on live television (Good Morning America, CNN and The Today Show, to name a few) and I’m impressed every time.

Magic is “the only art form that gives people that moment of astonishment”… and I definitely recommend reading up on his book! If you are looking for magic tricks to perform that garners the true amazement (I’ve tested out so many magic tricks on WeiJia, and she only truly finds the ones I learn from Joshua Jay quite brilliant and entertaining!) Plus, check out his unique and highly sophisticated website– which has fantastic performance footage and the complete biography of Joshua Jay’s rise to becoming a world class magician!

Video of the Day: Fastest Rapper

0

This YouTube rapper, who has also appeared on Ellen, may be the fastest rapper in the world. He believes he can go faster but thinks then the viewers would not be able to interpret the words. In fact, he is such a fast rapper, that he had his pet cat beside him just to show that he had not fast-forwarded the video and then posted it. Take a look.

Picture the Future Campaign: City-Wide High School Competition

Calling out to all high school students in Diefenbaker, Pearson, Churchill, and Western! This February-March, a picture taking marathon is taking place to raise awareness and money for Red Cross’s Child Advocacy and Rehabilitation Program in Liberia. The money raised will help rehabilitate child soldiers and orphans back into society. A Novel in a Nanosecond (well… perhaps a bit more…); A Book Reviews Series: “I AM THE MESSENGER”

2

When reading countless novels I look for those that stand out and show not only strong growth in character but also a more realistic way for “normal” people to develop. “Normal” referring to all us Muggles who don’t live in a world of fantasy. I hold nothing against fantasy novels but a novel where reality is a considered factor and imagination can still come still come into play and show great character development is, to me, a good read.

One novel the falls into this category is I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak. The novel follows the story of Ed Kennedy as he is thrust, against his will, into the role of one of many messenger as part of a grand plan of an individual. The nature of having immense responsibility cast upon him starts of Ed’s roller coaster ride into deep characterization. From having to pretend to be a husband long lost to showing the meaning of brotherhood through pain Ed’s struggles not only exemplify his character changing but as the story progresses, the hidden capability of a mediocre person, a capability that resides in us all is  revealed. The reader gains an appreciation of, what is a seemingly disappearing quality: humanity… caring for others though you barely know them… Taking a chance to save something precious that somebody has. The forcibly placed mission that Ed later finds to be noble and follows for the betterment of his community greatly emphasize a theme of a hidden capability of extreme humanity that resides within us all and can make us better people once it sees the light. Zusak’s style of setting up the missions from low to high intensity draws the reader in, the sense of “what will Ed be forced to face next” draws the reader in and they can not help to follow Ed on his quests. Zusak’s style of writing itself amplifies the “normalness” that surrounds Ed, making him a character that is more identifiable to the reader.

The combination of theme as well as character development and their effortless, perfect nature of complimenting with each other is one among many reasons I would  recommend Markus Zuasak’s I am the Messenger to every reader out there.

The Battle Over Parenting

1
Amy Chua and her two daughters
Amy Chua with her two daughters: Sophia and Louisa. From beijing-kids.com

“This brings me to my final point. Some might think that the American sports parent is an analog to the Chinese mother. This is so wrong. Unlike your typical Western overscheduling soccer mom, the Chinese mother believes that (1) schoolwork always comes first; (2) an A-minus is a bad grade; (3) your children must be two years ahead of their classmates in math; (4) you must never compliment your children in public; (5) if your child ever disagrees with a teacher or coach, you must always take the side of the teacher or coach; (6) the only activities your children should be permitted to do are those in which they can eventually win a medal; and (7) that medal must be gold.”

– From the book “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother,” by Amy Chua (You can read more excerpts of her book here)

Amy Chua is a first-generation Chinese immigrant and her recent book has caused quite a stir within the world of parenting. Besides being a professor at Yale Law School, Amy is a supporter and practitioner of “traditional Chinese parenting.” Though she has stated the ethnicity really doesn’t matter, her traditional Chinese parenting involves a rigorous academic career for her children at the expense of sacrificing time for leisure or fun. This book almost completely satisfies the stereotypical Asian parent.

Raised with tough love herself, Amy is thankful to her parents for her successes today and holds deep love for them. She argues that though the actions may be harsh sometimes, the intentions are are based on love and they result in a better life for the children. An interview with her two daughters reveal that though sometimes they find their conditions a bit unfair, they do recognize their mother has the best of intentions for them.

The controversy around this book is not about the usage of ethnicity as symbols or labels; the Chinese parent could easily be the African-American parent and the Western parent could easily be a Muslim parent. The comments flew over such things like if calling your children “lazy, self-indulgent, and pathetic” is “good parenting.” It may be true that due to conditions in different parts of the world competition for a high standard of living varies and therefore for success, parents of a certain ethnicity may push their children harder. But at what point does “knowing your children can do better” turn into verbal abuse, which could have lasting psychological impacts on children? On this issue I am a moderate; of course some sort of discipline is needed around the house, but not an all-encompassing torture.

Thought from the book Amy has received a lot of hatred, her book is more of a memoir and it is more about how she has changed, and indeed she has. Because of her love for them, Amy has allowed her daughters to practice less music and go to sleep-overs as she fears of losing them. The book is about her development as a parent and she has said that there were things she did that she was not proud of and she would make certain changes. By far this book is not exactly a how-to guide and though Amy has changed, she still stands by her principles of tough-love.

For a slightly comedic response to her book by Roger Collier of the Ottawa Citizen: Why Caucasian fathers are superior.

Guide to University Applications

0

In my last post I promised to explain my extended absence from the blog, and I intend to keep that promise. Simply put, I have been busy doing applications: for universities, scholarships, bursaries, internships, you name it. I have been swamped by applications of all kinds and of all types. Now, with all the accumulated experience and wisdom, I decided to write a short guide on them. This first one will be on the basic university applications.

Deciding on Your Targets

The first step in your journey is choosing your possible destinations. Take your pick. There are certainly many factors at play. What major are you interested in? The sciences? Arts? Business? How big of a campus do you want? Do you want to be close to home? With friends? Do you prefer an athletic school or an academic one? Liberal arts perhaps? Refer to a book if you are really stuck. Look up the profile of each university/college and chose wisely.

I would suggest that you select three or four targets. Backups are always needed but too many is usually costly. In fact, university applications in my experience cost around $125 with some fluctuations. Nevertheless, try to diversify your choices. Have a guaranteed one for backup, try for a realistic goal and probably apply for a long shot as well. This will ensure that if you overestimate or underestimate yourself, you will still end up in the university or college you deserve to be in.

Start early… actually start now

For those who are applying next year, start early! In fact, take note of the early decision deadline and apply! Not only is it possible that applying early will improve your chances of admittance, knowing admission decisions early on gives you an advantage in scholarship applications, but more on that later.

If you haven’t started yet, start now! I mean it! Some universities including McGill and University of Toronto require you to create an account, pay a fee and initiate your application process by the end of February. If you are applying for any major scholarships, the middle of February is usually the deadline for your completed application. So get on it.

Take account of all your applications and research what must be done and deadlines for those tasks. Make sure you know when you have to pay fees, when you have to submit transcripts and reference letters and when you have to apply for major entrance scholarships. Keep everything you learn in an organized word document or in a neat filling system. Organization is key.

Video of the Day: Crater Face

Today’s Video of the Day brings you an unusual animated story about love. An astronaut risks his life to bring two aliens closer together. I think I have space dust in my eye.

Let’s just hope the relationship doesn’t turn out to be rocky.

Song of the Day: 90’s Flashback

Jeff Buckley is one of my personal favourite artists. Before his untimely death in 1997 he wrote many hauntingly beautiful songs. Although he did not write the following song, “Hallelujah” was a perfect symbol of his undeniable talent and passion.
