Dubstep – Still Alive by Mt. Eden

0

Dubstep is one of the genres of music that is growing extremely fast in today’s music world. The heavy drum and bass, with the clipped audio samples and the sudden vocals merge to form a very high energy and fun track.

The track that I’ve picked out is Still Alive, if anyone has played Mirrors Edge (a great game), you’ll definitely know it! Mt. Eden has done some really great work with Lisa Miskovsky’s vocal samples, and it’s a really interesting example of dubstep.

Hope you enjoy the track 🙂

My Side of the Story

My Side of the Story

A short story by Lisa Bui

“What a miserable autumn morning”.

I huddled against my rag blanket to keep myself warm from the cold, howling winds. I was waving a small, cracked bucket in front of me, in hopes of a caring passerby to throw me a meager coin. Crowds of people surrounded me: two business men who were arguing like bears, a curious tourist with an annoying camera click- just like a braying donkey- and a numerous amount of people dashing toward the Hurston Theater,  wanting to see a play. As masses of people brushed by me, none of them threw me a copper penny, a reassuring glance, or even a smile. Instead, I was given cold sneers, mocking glances and looks of disgust.

“Is that a hobo on the street? How disgusting!”

“Look how dirty he dresses, Melissa! He’s a rat in a hole! A worm on the sidewalks!”

“Mommy! That man on the street scares me! Why does he live there?”

I indignantly frowned, and stared in disapproval at the unwelcoming strangers. They were weasels with kindness; insulting and incompetent. Who did they think they were? The Queen and King of the World?! I started to impulsively walk to the Homeless Shelter, as it was where I could drop in and grab a bite to eat or even a place to sleep, when a step stopped me.

Valentine’s Day AMV

[youtube 8E3xYBG0FmE]

This week’s AMV is Valentine’s day themed, and what better way to commemorate the day of love than with a CLANNAD AMV. A little bias was involved in the selection as CLANNAD is my favorite anime in regards to love and perseverance. I won’t go into much detail about the show so I don’t spoil it, however I will say that it is reflective of love in a very profound way; it shows the viewers over and over again the power one being can have upon another; how much one can save another and yet how much one can destroy another. It’s full of life lessons making it one my favorites, if not my favorite, romance anime: which I don’t partake in often due to their sometimes ridiculous nature.

I am curious as to what animes you guys think also fit Valentine’s Day. Feel free to share them with a comment.

Anime: Clannad/ Clannad After Story, Produced by Kyoto Animation.

Song: Beautiful Colors

Artist: Kill Paradise

Outfit of the Day: Maroon Tights

0

Recently, I have noticed that colourful tights are becoming more popular as Spring arrives. I wanted to show you my interpretation, so I thought that taking pictures of my outfits would be a simple and great way to do just that! Today, I wore a plain black dress, a recycled-knit taupe cardigan (same length as the dress), and maroon tights. I accessorized the outfit with a thin, black, leather-strap watch, and a small gold ring on my other hand. For my shoes, I wore my black lace-up flat oxfords.

My tip with wearing colourful tights is to make sure that your outfit is simple, and not too far off neutral tones. This is because colourful tights are still new, which means they should be introduced lightly, because they are already perceived to be bold. It can be overwhelming for others to have crazy contrasting colours. Have fun with it, and try it out for the spring season!

Do you know what HUMAN RIGHTS ARE? Do you know what HUMAN RIGHTS YOU  HAVE? Did you know that these HUMAN RIGHTS are NOT GUARANTEED for EVERYONE?

It’s all about Voices for Rights at this year’s Global Youth Summit! Global Youth Summit is a youth driven initiative that combines great entertainment, interactive workshops, and an engaging keynote speaker – all to get youth inspired to get involved, take up action and to raise their voices for human rights. This event is set to kick off on April 16 at the Jubilee Auditorium!

Organized by S.C.R.E.A.M, which stands for Social and Community Responsibility through Education, the Arts, and Music, we are a planning committee dedicated to building relationships, communication and engagement among the youth in our community. S.C.R.E.A.M encourages youth to start thinking and how to be a part of social activism and community development, locally and globally. Our goal to make a difference in our community for tomorrow, through youth mobilization today. We are in partnership with the YMCA and Canadian Red Cross, and if you are a high school student that wants to get involved with Global Youth Summit, to make a positive change in your community, you still can!

Previous GYS

I encourage all high school students to attend! This event will definitely leave you with a toolkit and ideas on how raise your voice to get involved in the process of making a difference, the opportunity to meet new friends, eat good food with great entertainment, and to impart confidence to impower youth to make their voices heard – because a honest voice is much louder than a crowd’s.

I know, because Global Youth Summit did this for me last year, and that youth are capable of speaking for others that would otherwise have no voices!

It’s going to be at the Jubliee Auditorium on Saturday, April 16.

Contact Erica Hoiss by phone 403-261-6216 or email, Erica.Hoiss@redcross.ca to get involved with S.C.R.E.A.M, for more information, or to attend the awesome event of Global Youth Summit!

Quotes of the Day: Jeff Buckley

0

In the spirit of valentines day I have decided to make a compilation of affectionate quotes from songs by the late Jeff Buckley (covers and originals). Enjoy…

1. “Broken down and hungry for your love, with no way to feed it” (Lover you should have come over).

2. “Just like the ocean, always in love with the moon” (Opened Once).

3. “stay with me under these waves, tonight. Be free for once in your life tonight” (Nightmares by the sea).

4. “True Self is what brought you here, to me. A place where we can accept this love” (Morning Theft).

5. “Searching our past for the true you and I, you and I, you and I. All for you” (You and I).

6. “I’m not with you but of you” (I know we could be so happy baby (if we wanted to be)).

Valentines on YouTube

0

If you’re a YouTube fan, I’m betting that you have at least one favorite YouTube artist. Their voices are original, unique and enjoyable–a big reason on why I love indie artists. So for my Valentines post, I’ve decided to spam you with original songs written by famous YouTube artists! Granted they will probably come up with new Valentines-related songs this year, I still listen to these songs outside of February. So I hope you appreciate the lyrics and musical talent that these artists have!

Kina Grannis – She’s pretty, appreciative and talented! And she made an album called Stairwells, which I highly suggest you check out!

[youtube 840NbiFF1zM]

David Choi – He looks like the sensitive and sweet type of boy. His music’s just got this flavor!

[youtube 2nfHJR9U3XQ]

Jennifer Chung – Not quite as popular, but still has a great voice. Listen to her original songs and the power of the lyrics.

[youtube 8Fz58aywVk8]

Kurt Schneider – His channel also features Sam Tsui, the guy who sings all the parts of a song.  So I hope you enjoy this hilarious Valentine’s video!

That’s my small collection for now! Feel free to post links to other Valentines-related originals in the comment section! So with that I will leave you with this one last video:

Isn’t it cute?! I hope you enjoy it and have a nice February~

The Lovely Bones Movie Review

0

I have said the book is bad, and I have claimed that the story could be a lot better. But the movie also proved that the story could be a lot worse.

Basically, the story is the same; a girl is violated and murdered and goes to heaven, only it’s not heaven but a place in between heaven and earth because she can’t let go of earth. It differs from the novel in that our protagonist starts off alive, and rather than having flashbacks throughout the story, they have all the events in the beginning of the story.

The movie does have a more distinct plotline, but unfortunately, it lack the deepness of the novel. Also, the characters all seem one dimensional. On top of that, the story was toned down to acquire a PG rating; this caused the story to lose all of its realism. Further more, the bad CGI also hinders the realism, one would assume that a movie that uses so much CGI would at least do a good job at it.

Bottom Line: this film offers nothing to the movie industry, it also lacks in the few positives that the novel had. Also, the movie is way too toned down. Take that, add some bad CGI and what do you get? A terrible movie. I give it a 3/10

C!rca delivers a breathtaking performance of live contemporary circus

Where acrobatics, bodies, skills, strength and lights diffuse into a overlapping and continuous whole, C!rca comes from Brisbane, Australia, a celebration of the limitless possibilities of the human imagination fused with the innovative expression of the human body pushed to the extreme. A vigorous and challenging art form, these performers captivate audiences through a stunning, delightful, and moving show that is sure to extend the limits of contemporary entertainment.

Performing at the Theater Junction GRAND, “Calgary’s culture house for contemporary live arts,” WeiJia (a fellow blogger) and I were naturally drawn to the curious superhuman feats this troupe would perform, from amazing back flips, contorting twists, and amazing balance of strength and flexibility. C!rca mixes sensual contemporary dance and traditional circus acts to create a truly unique show.  WeiJia and I chose the seats in the very front of the row in the theater to get more up close and personal with the fantastic performers. Essentially, we flocked to see the extraordinary and were not disappointed!

C!ca earns a reputation of innovation, international appearances, and among others, developing workshop programs and new acts. Since 2006, C!rca has dazzled the audience in 18 countries for more than 50,000 people a year, creating aspiring and heart stopping shows such as 61 Circus Acts in 60 Minutes.

The show’s start was extremely disturbing, but interesting, as it was unexpected. A tousled dark-haired young literally leaped onto the theater’s floor flat, eerily illuminated by a single spotlight. No mastery over his body, his built arms and body twisted awkwardly, as if possessed by a puppet master. Ironically, though out the show, it was a theme that was referred to and hinted at in several more acts, ironic considering their astounding superhuman feats that can only be achieved through dedication and mastery of their own human bodies.

Internet Metering

0

The internet has had a huge role in creating society and culture today. While it can be used for negative means, there are infinite ways in which it can and does transform the world for the better. For instance, here at Youth are Awesome, we bloggers are empowered and connected: this website is a a hub for youth in Calgary that meets a previously unmet need. The internet is a place of freedom, and I personally do not want its growth to be hindered by needless overcharging. Nor do I want to pay more for my internet when it costs very little for the providers. This is the current issue with Internet metering. Learn more from this video:
