Solar Eclipses: What Are They?

An eclipse is used to refer to an astronomical event in which a celestial object such as planets, stars, galaxies, and/or spacecrafts are temporarily obscured. This obscuration can occur through the object passing through the shadow of another, or having another object come between it and the viewer.

So, what exactly is solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse is when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, which then obscures the view of the sun from a small part of Earth, whether it be partially or totally. There are four different types of solar eclipses:

  • Partial solar eclipse: As the name suggests, this occurs when thee moon partially blocks the sun. Consequently, some parts of the sun are still visible and the blocked part of it appears dark. This is the most common!
  • Annular solar eclipse: The moon blocks the sun in a way that the perimeter of the sun still remains visible. The glowing ring, or “annulus” around the sun is known as the “ring of fire,” and is the second most common type of eclipse.
  • Total solar eclipse: As the name would suggest, the moon completely blocks out the sun for a few minutes. This, of course, leads to a period of darkness. During this darkness, you can witness the solar corona, which is often impossible to notice with the naked eye when the sun is unobscured. It also may be possible to see Baily’s beads, a diamond ring effect that occurs when some sunlight is still able to reach Earth as the moon is not perfectly round (due to craters and valleys.)

  • Hybrid solar eclipse: This is the rarest of all the eclipses! It’s a mix of a total and annular eclipse. In some regions of the Earth, people will witness a total eclipse, whereas in other regions, people will observe an annular eclipse.

Fun Fact: There’s a solar eclipse occurring on Monday, April 8th, 2024! If you live in Calgary, we’ll be experiencing a partial eclipse as we aren’t located in the region of the eclipse’s totality. Do other planets experience eclipses?

Yes! The moon experiences eclipses called “lunar eclipses.” It happens when the Sun casts Earth’s shadow onto the moon’s surface. This means that the Earth must be between the Sun and the Moon, with the two planets and star aligning on the same plane of orbit. On occasion, the moon’s surface appears red as the only sunlight reaching it passes through the Earth’s atmosphere.

*Lunar eclipses can only occur during a full moon.

Other planets experience solar eclipses but they’d require a moon that’s large enough to cover the sun’s surface, at least from their perspective. For planets like Mercury and Venus, they don’t experience solar eclipses as they do not have moons! For Mars, since it has two moons, it does experience PARTIAL solar eclipses only due to its moons not being large enough. The gaseous planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, can experience total eclipses as they have large moons and, from their perspective, the sun appears small. However, since these planets are made of gas, you can’t exactly witness the eclipse.

How Were Seasonal Breaks Integrated Into Our Society?

Fantasy is the best.

I love to read anything and everything. My favorite genre, however, is fiction, especially fantasy fiction. I still enjoy reading other genres like mystery and science fiction. But none of them get me curled up on my couch, eagerly reading to discover what awaits for me on the next page. The only genre that does this for me is fantasy. This way, I wanted to understand what makes fantasy so appealing as a genre. In this blog, I will be sharing my personal reason for choosing fantasy above all other genres, and then compare my thoughts to public opinion.

My personal reason:

The reason why I love fantasy is because of how relatable to real life it is. This may sound funny, given that fantasy is a genre purely based on the supernatural. It follows the stories of characters which are out-of-the ordinary, in settings that are unlike anything we have seen before. These are completely magical. So how then, is it that fantasy is relatable? I believe that the very aspect that makes fantasy relatable to real life, is magic. To me, magic, in all fantasy novels, is a symbolism of life.

There is no one way to define life or magic. Life becomes to each individual, what they want it to be. Similarly, magic, in fantasy novels, is multi potent. Magic achieves the visions, wills, and ideas of the character. For example, in J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter series, Harry (the protagonist) uses magic to bring light into the world. He uses magic as a means to save his cherished world made of his friends, family, and mentors, from the dark intentions of Voldemort (the antagonist).

However, a character can also be tempted by the negative influences of magic. This is seen in J.R.R Tolkien’s The Lord of The Rings (LotR). In LotR, Frodo Baggins (the protagonist) is set out on a quest to destroy The One Ring of Sauron (the antagonist). While The One Ring brings great power to its bearer, it also induces great desire and selfishness. This desire and possessiveness over the Ring causes the Ring Bearer to ignore their interpersonal relationships with those around them. Frodo, with his will power and the support of his friends, is able to overcome this ill influence of the ring.

Therefore, the rather volatile nature of magic gives it a similarity to life. We give direction for our life, whether it be in a positive or a negative way. Similarly, fantasy characters can shape magic to be a good or an evil force in their life.

The reason why I love fantasy is because the one thing which makes it other-worldly, also gives it a resemblance to the ordinary life that we live.

Now, I don’t know if that makes sense to anyone, or if anyone agrees with me! Feel free to think about something you are passionate about, and then try to figure out why you feel passionate about it.

Strategic Napping: Finding the Ideal Duration for School Productivity

As a high school student, I always get tired after school and need a nap to function my body properly. It is like a ritual to prepare myself for the test tomorrow and a time to recharge from all the stress and overwhelming school activities. However, I also want to prepare my body in an ideal state where I can focus on studying rather than getting groggy after a nap. So what is the ideal amount of hours of nap for our productive day? Let’s all be strategic.

10 Minutes Power Nap

If you are looking for quick energy, a confidence boost, and increased alertness without causing grogginess upon waking, a power nap is right for you! This short duration will support you in the milder stages of non-REM sleep, reducing sleep inertia and helping you to return to your daily work more easily with greater productivity. One drawback is that the positive impact of a power nap only lasts about 1-3 hours, which is relatively low compared to longer naps.

20 Minutes / 90 Minutes Nap

These napping times may reduce sleep inertia and lead to its quick dissipation. Also, suppose you wake up from a nap in either 20 minutes (before going into the deeper sleep) or about 90 minutes (most likely to be the end of the sleep cycle, including both non-REM and REM sleep stages). In that case, it will support memory consolidation, enhance creativity, and improve mood and sophisticated thinking skills, as you will likely awaken from the light stages of sleep. Even after a short nap, severe sleep deprivation can cause your brain to quickly transition into deep sleep, leading to longer-lasting sleep inertia and difficulties in waking up and feeling alert. One drawback of napping for 90 minutes may negatively interfere with nighttime sleep.

1 Hour Nap

As you sleep longer, your brain reaches slow-wave sleep, also known as the deepest level of sleep, typically within about 1 hour. Therefore, if you wake up in about 1 hour during deep sleep, you might not function well due to “sleep inertia,” a brief loss of orientation and a reduction in mood and/or performance after waking up from sleep. Individuals may show slower thinking, reasoning, remembering, and learning speeds, as well as shorter reaction times and worse short-term memories, and as academic students, we should try to avoid sleep inertia to maximize our learning abilities. Also, 1-hour naps negatively impact the night’s sleep. One study shows that a roughly 1-hour nap reduced nighttime sleep duration by 48 minutes and night sleep efficiency by 2.4% for healthy seniors.

However, if you are looking for a nap to improve memory consolidation and retention for learning and retaining new information, 60 minutes of sleep might be for you. Also, as rapid eye movement (REM) sleep usually happens in long naps of at least 60 minutes, an hour-long nap can boost creative thinking and emotion-processing skills.

As you may have heard on social media and news outlets, there will be a total solar eclipse on April 8th, 2024. A total solar eclipse is an exciting phenomenon in which the Moon blocks the Sun, causing a shadow on Earth. Due to this, the sky turns dark for a couple of minutes for those situated in areas that are in the path of the eclipse. With that in mind, here is a comprehensive article on information regarding the reasons that cause a total solar eclipse and how you can stay safe observing it.

Path of Totality

As exciting as witnessing a solar eclipse sounds, only certain areas of Canada are in its path. Therefore, those in Eastern Canada will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness the sky plunge into temporary darkness. More specifically, Sherbrooke and Fredricton are directly in the areas that will experience the eclipse. According to NASA, the event will begin over the South Pacific Ocean, and Mexico’s Pacific Coast is the first area to experience the eclipse in North America around 11:07 a.m. PDT. Many cities across the United States are also impacted by this event, such as Dallas and Cleveland. Hence, this can be a lucrative time for many business owners, and thousands of people flock to these areas to witness the eclipse. However, it is also a time for scientists and researchers to gather information regarding heliophysics and how the Sun impacts our planet.

What is a Solar Eclipse?

To enjoy the upcoming total solar eclipse, it is vital to understand the scientific reasonings behind its occurrence. A solar eclipse occurs as the Moon aligns between the Sun and the Earth during its orbit. There are four types of solar eclipses, each with its unique events. Here is a list:

  • Partial Solar Eclipse

  • Hybrid Solar Eclipse 

During a total solar eclipse, individuals can see a “solar corona” and a diamond ring effect, “Bailey’s beads.” A solar corona is the outermost part of the Sun’s atmosphere, which is difficult to view during daylight. However, it can become visible during total solar eclipses. A white corona appears around the Sun in an eclipse. On the other hand, the “Bailey’s beads” phenomenon is caused by the rugged terrain, consisting of mountains and valleys on the Moon that cause sunlight to pass through, known as bright spots. 

Observing the Eclipse 

To watch this astronomical, it is important to protect your eyes using glasses that contain a solar filter and to practice other safety precautions. It is also essential to not directly view the ellipse with a telescope or stare into the sun before the path of totality. Ways We Can Responsibly Reduce Water Usage

Why reduce our water usage?

We all use water in our daily lives. Water is the single most important thing for all biological organisms to survive and thrive, so it may seem somewhat counterintuitive to restrain our water usage. Yet we hear this all the time, with the local and larger-scale governments all over the world stressing the importance of water conservation and why this is needed. Today, I will be speaking to the various reasons behind this, and why it truly takes each and every one of us to act for the benefit of our community.

Global warming is a real threat and poses very serious challenges to many places around the world. With artificial greenhouse gases produced by cities and factories, the atmosphere of our planet is “thickened” in a way that causes more heat from the sunlight to be trapped by the gases, thus increasing the global temperature worldwide. This is a trend that started during the Industrial Revolution in Europe, and continued, only to be aggravated, in the centuries until now.

With global warming also comes desertification, as seen in many parts around the world which are dry and not as moist. These regions are known to possess a semi-arid, or “steppe”, form of climate. They are not settings that resemble the Sahara desert; rather, a diverse form of plants and animals still naturally call them home. Living in Alberta with its relatively drier climate, I can certainly say we also possess at least some semi-arid features in our climate. However, desertification, as caused by rising global temperatures, illustrates the strong effects posed by heat. Warmer temperatures cause less snowfall in many mountains, leading to low water levels in many lakes and rivers. As well, Warmer temperatures cause quicker evaporation rates from rivers and lakes.

This is problematic, precisely since all major populated areas, and rural farms, source their water from lakes and rivers. Here in Calgary, much of our water supply is from the Bow and Elbow Rivers. Therefore, truly everybody has a role to play in preserving our natural freshwater sources, and this begins with reducing our water usage.

Finding a balance

In general, the world needs to reduce its water shortage where it can. This is because, across the world, many people are suffering from water shortages, and must hike miles away just for a sip of water. As residents of a developed nation such as Canada, we generally have no trouble gaining access to water for our daily usage. Thus, we should step it up and take the responsibility to conserve water, while maintaining our quality of life. Here are some methods to do this:

  • Filling the sink instead of letting the water run freely when doing the dishes is a great option. Put down the plug to the drain, and squeeze some detergent into the clean water in the sink.
  • Fix any and all leaks, including that of faucets and toilets. It is said that a leaky faucet can waste more than 3000 gallons each and every year. Preventing leaks is the single most effective method of preventing water from going to waste, yet it does not negatively affect our quality of life whatsoever!
  • Use washing machines and dishwashers only with full loads. Just like when there is an electricity shortage in town during the winter, authorities advise toning down on the usage of electricity by shutting down large-voltage household equipment, the same principle can be applied to water. Instead of running the dishwashers every night, perhaps wait a while for the dishes to fill up, then do it. This likely will also reduce the electricity usage by the dishwashers and washing machines as well per household!
  • If there is a pool in the backyard, be sure to check out water-saving pool filters! Pools can also potentially use lots of water, and as they are for recreational activities, it is truly important to be sure that we are managing our water usage with pools carefully.
  • Cleaning outside the house with a broom, instead of using a hose that actively pumps fresh water, is a great option, and should be taken advantage of whenever possible. Of course, in the case that there is a mess that can only be cleaned with water, feel free to use water then! However, gravels and loose objects, either belong on the road or in the trash bin, so be sure to collect them appropriately!

Conclusion

And remember, whether or not we are directly affected by desertification, it takes everyone around the world to band together and work on conserving water, both for ourselves and for future generations.

The Brilliant Beach Bonanza

The sun is pinned up high in the sky 

Sharing its illuminating light rays with my eyes

The feeling of warmth grows from my head to my toes

As the anticipation sprouts from deep down below and grows

Sprinting through the grainy sand

Feeling it stuck between your toes

And diving for a volleyball 

while sand goes up your nose

The water splishes and splashes all around

Drenching me in my gown

Succumbed beneath the icy waves

As my arms and legs flail around 

The smile is once again plastered on my face

While succumbing to temptations and losing all my grace,

I race to take the first fresh sandwich, as I dare

The sight crunch of the baguette and the sizzle of the meat delights my ears 

While parents once again greet their kids and the ones they call dear

Droplets dripping from my drenched hair and clothes 

Meanwhile, I frantically searched for a tissue so that I could blow my nose

Hues of crimson, orange, and rose, hypnotize my eyes

The wind has once again regained its life

As the crisp breeze allows my hair to take flight

Seeing the Sequence in Action: Let’s take a moment to look at the Fibonacci sequence in action. Suppose we have a hive of bees. Each generation of bees can be represented by the Fibonacci sequence. For instance, if we start with one pair of bees (0, 1), the next generation would be 1 pair (1), then 1 pair again (1), followed by 2 pairs (2), then 3 pairs (3), 5 pairs (5), and so on. Isn’t it fascinating how nature follows this pattern?

The Fibonacci sequence isn’t just confined to numbers; it’s also intricately woven into the fabric of nature. Take a sunflower, for example. If you observe the arrangement of seeds in the center of a sunflower, you’ll notice that they spiral in opposing directions, following the Fibonacci sequence. Similarly, the petals of flowers often appear in numbers that are Fibonacci numbers, such as lilies with three petals, buttercups with five, and daisies with 34, or even 55, petals.

The Fibonacci sequence has also inspired artists and architects throughout history. The famous painter Leonardo da Vinci incorporated the Fibonacci spiral, also known as the Golden Spiral, in his masterpiece, the Mona Lisa. Architects like Le Corbusier utilized the Fibonacci sequence in the design of buildings, creating structures that evoke harmony and balance.

How Were Seasonal Breaks Integrated Into Our Society?

 

                                    Introduction:

The first day of spring has come along and two weeks of pure freedom have arrived, I want to teach people the history of how these breaks have been integrated into our society. Have you ever wondered how we got breaks? This blog will be surrounding this question.

                                      Ancient Societies:

Ancient societies that were known for their agriculture such as the Mesopotamia in Egypt, were crucial parts in developing breaks. This is because their rhythms of planting and downtime corresponded with the seasons. The way they lived their lives was entirely dependent on the seasons. This was heavily fueled by spiritual beliefs.

                                    Middle Ages

Similarly, in the Middle Ages with feudal systems encouraging tiring labor for serfs, breaks provided peasants with relief from their work. Serfs would look forward to these breaks that were marked by religious festivals and seasonal breaks.

Industrialization

Following the amazing pieces of different machinery in the Industrial Revolution, lots of controversial changes were added to people’s lives. These included child labor, longer working hours, lowered pay, less protection in work environments, and no breaks. This led groups called labor unions to start movements and protest for their worker rights. One union that was especially important in this era was the Knight of Labour. This group opted for an 8-hour work day along with abolishing child labor and seasonal breaks. The protests and worker strikes eventually led to us having breaks every season to this day.

Modern Era (Summary)

Through lots of past struggles, seasonal breaks have been an important and crucial part of our lives. While the duration of these breaks may vary from the others, it is important to appreciate the downtime that these breaks give us to recover. Some ways we can be grateful for this time given to us are by spending time with family and friends, taking a walk, and of course, relaxing.

Coming to terms with my troublesome tennis journey

Imagine this:

You step foot on a fresh swap-green court holding a brand-new racket in one hand, and a neon-green ball in the other. The wind whips through your hair while the heat of the sun radiates onto your skin. Your family and friends are cheering for you on the sidelines as you approach the baseline. 1 bounce 2 bounce 3 bounce. You are deciding which form of attack to use to catch your opponent off guard. Eventually, you throw the ball up high, high, high, into the air, and when you reach with your racket hand, you smash the ball vigorously on the opposite side of the court. The referee calls “Ace!!”, and you feel a proud grin slide across your face. Later in the game, your opponent who’s much more ferocious than you begins to serve. You sway from side to side, staring the ball dead in the eye while getting ready to return it. And in the blink of an eye, the ball is coming fast fast fast towards you, and with all your might- you release the forehand of the century. Your parents cheer from the sidelines while your friends scream from the top of their lungs. 

As a matter of fact, I have never experienced this. 

From the tender age of 10, I was stuck in community tennis lessons. From running laps around the court and practicing my serves – I absolutely hated every single second of it. Those 1 hour tennis lessons every Saturday, felt like the most monstrous thing my parents could make me endure. Tennis and I had an extremely toxic relationship that no matter how much I tried, I wasn’t allowed to avoid it. From tears in the car, while heading and coming back, I made sure to express my hatred for the sport. 

After a whole year of this treacherous “torture”, I felt as though a miracle had occurred. I was finally allowed to quit tennis. I thought my parents finally had given in to the tears and the yelling and the sulk on my face as I swayed around the court. 

As expected, I was happy. I was absolutely ecstatic. I was arguably the happiest girl in the world! But this happiness only lasted for about 1 singular month. During that month without tennis, I realized something. I had given up. I took the easy way out and had given up. Sure it felt amazing to not step foot in that center and run around the court like a maniac- chasing each ball with all my might. But deep down inside, underneath the pure joy, I was disappointed. Disappointed in myself for not pushing through. Not proving to not only my parents, but to myself, that I wasn’t a quitter. 

This feeling lingered around for a very long time. Every time I went into the garage and saw my tennis racket sitting on the shelf, new and unused, I always felt a small pinch in my heart. A minuscule feeling of failure. My mom wanted to sell my racket so that another little kid could use it, but for some reason, I always stopped her. She never understood why, mainly because I always complained about hating tennis. 

The truth is, I never necessarily hated tennis, as a sport. Truthfully,  I hated the fact that I wasn’t good at it. I hated the fact that I was a chubby 10-year-old girl who didn’t have enough energy to run for the ball. I hated the fact that I just couldn’t hit with so much power as the other kids. In fact, I genuinely enjoyed watching tennis – but just hated playing it. After quitting, sure I felt relieved that this weight was lifted off my shoulders, but the weight of guilt and disappointment replaced it.

After a little while, I went up to my parents and said the most shocking thing known to mankind. 

“I want to play tennis again”. You can imagine the look on their faces after hearing this. 

When I first got back on the court, I decided to go back with a fresh perspective. Forgetting my past tennis experience, and then pretending as if it were my first time. As expected, I still wasn’t any better, or faster, or stronger. But I came to terms with that fact, and that it was ok. I didn’t have to be amazing at everything I did, and even though I was horrible, I was just so happy that I didn’t quit. That I tried my best and pushed myself to my fullest potential. I guess I would say that my toxic relationship with tennis had somewhat “healed”. 

To this day, I still play tennis. I’ve gotten a little better, but I guess that didn’t really change much about how I felt about it. At this point in my tennis journey, I wouldn’t say that I hate tennis, but I also wouldn’t say that I loved it. Bringing in a Goldilocks reference, I felt my relationship with this sport was “just right”. 

What is Happening in Hong Kong? – Article 23

Days after Honkong’s pro-Beijing lawmakers passed it unanimously, Article 23 came into force at midnight of Saturday, which is a fast-tracking legislation to plug what authorities called national security loopholes. This new national security law is facing international criticism as it could erode freedoms and human rights in the city that is ruled by China and damage its international financial hub credential. 

In this blog, we will deeply explore what Article 23 is and the raising concerns toward this law. 

A maximum of ten years in prison for criticizing the government. 

2009 saw the repeal of the sedition statute in the UK, which the Justice Minister at the time referred to as a “arcane law from a bygone era.” But thanks to Article 23, the Hong Kong administration appears ready to intensify its use of a sedition statute from the colonial era, which had been dormant for 50 years.

It has taken a quarter-century to create this law.

The governments of China and the United Kingdom granted Hong Kong its own mini-constitution, known as the Basic Law, when the former ceded the former over to the latter in 1997. According to Article 23 of the Basic Law, Hong Kong “shall enact laws on its own” to outlaw seven different categories of offenses related to national security. However, no such law was ever enacted; in 2003, an attempt to enact Article 23 was abandoned in response to widespread, nonviolent demonstrations.

Hong Kong law now follows China’s definitions of “state secrets” and “national security.” 

The new law adopts mainland China’s definition of “national security,” which is a broad term that encompasses “major interests of the state.” Practically speaking, this refers to everything.

The law also establishes mainland China’s very broad definition of “state secrets,” which includes any scientific, technological, social, or economic advancement—even if it has never been formally designated as a secret. Furthermore, the Chief Executive, who is in charge of Hong Kong, has the power to attest to the fact that no document contains state secrets. Thus, once more, practically anything may be regarded as a “state secret.”

Interacting with foreigners is more dangerous

A maximum 14-year sentence is imposed for the new offense of “external interference,” which is defined by Article 23 legislation as any collaboration between an individual and “external forces.” Once again, the legislation is incredibly ambiguous: it stipulates that cooperation with a “external force” must occur with “unlawful intent” and “improper means.”

The law further broadens the definition of espionage; for example, collaborating with a “external force” to disseminate false or misleading information may now result in a 10-year prison sentence.

What precisely are “external forces,” then? They can be foreign governments, foreign political parties, international organizations, foreign organizations pursuing political goals, or any connected body or person to any of those bodies, as defined by Article 23.

It’s probable that the rule will be applied to confuse lawful collaboration between Hong Kong citizens or organizations and foreign organizations, such as those in commerce, academia, civil society, or even the UN. If foreign nationals commit these “crimes” in Hong Kong, they may potentially face legal action.

If you fail to report others, you can go to jail.

Any Chinese citizen, which includes the majority of Hongkongers, is required by this new national security law to report to the authorities any information they have concerning the treasonous acts of others. Failing to comply may result in a sentence of up to 14 years in jail.

This essentially makes it mandatory for citizens of Hong Kong to spy on their fellow citizens. It’s likely to exacerbate the already-present dread among Hongkongers and restrict their ability to openly voice their thoughts in their social groups and communities.

Police powers increased, captives’ legal rights reduced

When it comes to handling crimes involving national security, the new law gives the police broad new authority. They can detain someone for up to 16 days without filing charges if a magistrate approves (before it was two days). They may also forbid the individual from seeing any attorney during the first 48 hours following their apprehension or from seeing a particular attorney while in custody.

The leader of Hong Kong is able to enact new laws on their own.

The new law grants the Chief Executive the authority to independently enact subsidiary laws at any moment in the sake of “safeguarding national security.” This supplemental law may be implemented immediately and may result in a maximum sentence of seven years in jail.

Although the Article 23 law’s ambiguous and expansive wordings theoretically prevent subsidiary legislation from going outside its purview, there is still much room for arbitrary lawmaking.

New authorities will target Hongkongers abroad

The bill gives the government the authority to penalize “absconders” who are suspected of committing national security offenses but have not been found guilty of them, a move aimed at the diaspora population and activists who have relocated overseas. The government is now able to take actions like revoking people’s passports from Hong Kong or revoke their licenses to practice law.

Vague new technology that targets offenses

The new law creates a brand-new crime called “acts endangering national security in relation to computers or electronic systems,” which carries a potential 20-year jail term and has global applicability. But these “acts” are not defined by the law. During the consultation period, the administration only mentioned the “rapid development of technologies” and possible hacking. This crime is obviously susceptible to arbitrary abuse due to the vague legal definition and lack of legal clarity.

The law was passed in Hong Kong without any resistance.

Because Article 23 restricts human rights, it has always been a contentious topic. When 500,000 people protested the law in a 2003 march, the administration was obliged to postpone its enactment.

However, Hong Kong is a totally different city in 2024. The National Security Law, which was passed in 2020, has almost eliminated criticism. A large number of opposition politicians, journalists, and activists have been imprisoned; others have escaped. Now, peaceful protests against government policies are either outlawed or severely restricted.

In light of the fact that its opponents would be essentially unable to block it, the administration was able to eventually adopt Article 23 legislation.

Worldwide Censure

Those who have opposed the law most strongly include the US, the EU, Japan, and the UK. UK Foreign Minister David Cameron claimed the measure will “further damage the rights and freedoms” of people living in the city.

On Friday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken voiced “deep concern” that the law would be used to suppress dissent and violate human rights, noting that it might harm Hong Kong’s standing as a global center of finance.

In the meantime, travel advisories for Hong Kong have been updated by Taiwan, the UK, and Australia, who advise people to proceed with care.

The Australian government stated, “You could break the law without intending to, be detained without charge, and be denied access to a lawyer.”

145 community and advocacy groups have denounced the bill and demanded consequences against Hong Kong and Chinese authorities involved in its adoption, along with an evaluation of the situation of Hong Kong’s Economic & Trade Offices globally, in a joint statement spearheaded by the Hong Kong Democracy Council, an international organization.

“It’s time for the US to support Hong Kong’s freedom and political prisoners.” During a press appearance with the US Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC), which advises Congress, wanted Hong Kong campaigner Frances Hui to state, “Every time we let authoritarians get away with atrocities, we risk other bad actors attempting to do the same.”

More than a dozen activists from Tibet, Taiwan, and Hong Kong gathered to demonstrate against the law and yell their condemnations in Taipei’s upscale Ximending retail area. Australia, the UK, Canada, Japan, and the US are all planning additional protests.

However, Hong Kong authorities have “strongly condemned such political manoeuvres with skewed, fact-twisting, scaremongering, and panic-spreading remarks.”

Which way does China stand?

China has justified Hong Kong’s security crackdown, arguing that it was necessary to bring back order following months of pro-democracy and occasionally violent antigovernment rallies in 2019.

To date, 174 individuals and five corporations have been charged with national security offenses, resulting in around 291 arrests.

While individual rights are honored, no freedom is unassailable, according to Chinese officials who maintain that everyone is equal before the security rules that have brought stability back.

The Beautiful Connections Between Math and Art

Within the many subjects you learn at school, a couple of them are math and art. Some of you may like math more than art, vice versa, or some may like both. On the surface, you may view math as numbers and variables only, and art as a way to express creativity only. It seems like both subjects are completely separate with math seen as analytical and art seen as creativity. However, there are many things that connect between math and art. Although these are things you may not realize, there are times where math leads art and other times where art leads math. There are many overlaps between these two insights, but the most common ones include: shapes, math functions, and symmetry.

1. Shapes

Shapes are most likely one of the first things you learn in math class. When you began learning about shapes, some of the shapes you learn could include circles, squares, triangles, etc… . Ever since you’ve learned about shapes, there is a huge chance that you’ve applied that knowledge from math to art. The majority of the art pieces you observe and/or create will include shapes because of how simple or complex they can be. Every time you draw the sun, you are blindly applying that knowledge from math as you draw them. When it comes to geometry, you are exposed to many more shapes, and have more shapes to express yourself with in art projects. In short, shapes that you learn from math are some of the things you can be creative with in art, from overlapping shapes, intersecting shapes, etc… .

2. Math Functions

The further you get into math in high school, the more you learn about functions. In simple terms favored towards art, functions are essentially math equations that can give off many cool patterns. For example, every time you draw a straight line, you can draw that same line through a function in math class. All curves, shapes, and letters can be drawn through functions in math. Similar to shapes, you can be as creative as you wish when it comes to drawing functions. The art aspect of math functions comes from having the knowledge on how to create patterns.

Fun fact: If you advance to a class like Math 30 in high school, you get to learn how to adjust the structure of a function. You get to learn how to stretch, reflect, and even move the entire function.

3. Symmetry

While the first two are where math leads art, this one is where art leads math. First and foremost, symmetry means that one side looks the same as another through a certain “mirror” line. The idea of symmetry is more likely to come up first in art than math since the idea is directed more towards creativity than being analyzed. While the first two are concepts that math that can be applied to art, this one is where utilizing your imagination helps with math.

In math, especially in a higher level, when given a problem, having an expectation on what the answer should look like helps to see if you could be right or wrong. By having a creative imagination, you can apply it to math and use that imagination as an assistance. When it comes to symmetry, that idea can be used as an assistance as you work through math problems. Although symmetry can only help when it comes to reflections, there are many other ways to utilize art to predict an answer.

Closing Section

There are an incredible amount of connections between math and art. However, these simple ones are some of the many beautiful connections between the two subjects. As mentioned earlier, there are times where math leads art, and vice versa. The things you learn in math class can be applied towards art and the same with art towards math. Although those are two are distinct subjects, they are interconnected like every other subject in school. While you may be biased towards one or another or none, I hope this blog helped you admire both!

A small ray of light can pierce the blinding darkness

We’ve all had those days when we feel down. Maybe we feel sad because of something happening in our lives. Or maybe there’s no reason for our sadness. Maybe we just wake up on certain days feeling gloomy. And it isn’t our fault for feeling that way. Life, with its ups and downs, is hard. It can make us feel as though we are being blown away in an unforgiving blizzard of confusion, sadness, frustration, and anger.

However, we can always remember that along with these bitter feelings, there are also the sweet feelings. Sweet feelings. Like the energy we get when the sun shines in our faces. Or the warmth we get when we spend time with a person we love. We need to remember that we can use these sweet feelings as a compass to give us direction in this frenzy and mish-mash of emotions that we call life.

In this post, I’m not going to give you a list of strategies you can do to cheer you up when you feel hopeless and discouraged. Instead, I’ll tell you that it’s up to you to figure out what works best for you. Each individual is different. Each individual comes from different backgrounds. Everyone has different interests and lifestyles. Everyone has different things, activities, or people which make them happy. The key is to recognize these resources and use them when we need it.

Personally, I always rely on my mother for support and guidance. She is always there to talk with me. We don’t just talk about the bad things, but also the good things. We talk about how I’m reading a book in English class that I really like, how I made a new friend at school that day, or how I got a good score on a math test that I studied hard for. By acknowledging the small positives that everyday life brings, I realize that there is something to strive for in life. Yes, obstacles in life leave us feeling lost and discouraged. The darkness in life makes us feel suffocated and blinded. But talking with my mother, I realize that even in the darkness, there is always a ray of light. We just need to find the light by recognizing that it is there.

And then, we talk about the bad things. Oftentimes, I feel hesitant to share the bitterness that I feel with others. I feel that talking about it makes it worse. Talking about makes it seem as though I am acknowledging the obstacles and challenges in life. Surprisingly, that is exactly what I am doing when I talk about the bad things. I am accepting the fact that I have to live with challenges. By talking about this with my mother, I realize that the bad things are not as bad as I make them seem. I realize that even with these bitter feelings that are trying to confuse me in the frenzy of life, there are those sweet feelings that are trying to provide me with guidance and encouragement. I come to this realization only when I speak with my mother.

That being said, I am no expert in coming to terms with roadblocks in life. As I said before, I am not here to provide advice on how to overcome difficulties. I want to provide validity that everyone has the right to feel sad. But in order to feel happy, it’s important to appreciate the little examples of goodness in life.

My mother helps me to recognize these.

Who Was James Baldwin?

“Neither love nor terror makes one blind; indifference makes one blind.”  – James Baldwin

James Arthur Baldwin, born August 2, 1924 in Harlem, New York, was a prominent novelist, poet, essayist and civil rights activist of the 20th century. Known for his stunningly eloquent and incisive prose, he explored issues of race, religion, and homosexuality in both written and spoken words.

Born to a single mother, Emma Jones, who later married his step-father, a Baptist minister named David Baldwin, he was the eldest of nine children. He never knew his biologial father, however, he considered David Baldwin to be his father despite a tense relationship borne from a deviation in values and lifestyle, and followed in his footsteps to become a youth preacher. Later, his experience in the Church would deeply influence his writing.

Speaking of writing, Baldwin was an avid reader and writer from a very young age, often retreating to the safe haven that was the public library and writing out his thoughts and experiences in the midst of life in a difficult world. His first novel, the critically acclamed Go Tell It on the Mountain was loosely based off of his life durng his time in the Church and would revisit his teenagedom.

During his young adulthood, Baldwin struggled to balance his writing career and providing for his family in an enviroment rife with racism and homophobia. He held an aprenticeship under author Richard Wright in Grenwich Village, which throughout different periods in the last century has been considered a hub for artists and writers and/or the LGBTQ+ community. Eventually, this aprencieship would lead to Baldwin obtaining a fellowship which would lead him to Paris, France. This allowed him to escape the rampant racial and sexual discrimination he faced as an LGBTQ+ Black man in the United States, and he would spend a good chunk of his life abroad, only briefly returning to the US.

Throughout the rest of his adult life, he wrote extensively about race and homosexuality, the former of which was in the midst of the Civil Rights movement and the latter of which was almost entirely unexplored in the forefront of the public conciousness at the time. He was a prominent figure in the Civil Rights movement aside from his writing—a journalist, orator and friend of many prominent activists at the time. He spoke at many legal proceedings and marches, and considered it his duty to tell the truth even if it was difficult to hear.

When it came to his sexual orientation, he never placed a label upon himself because he considered the sexual binary and rigid boxes that the USA operated on to be restricting and unrealistic of human fluidity. However, he was open about his relationships and attraction to bother men and women, and in his works he explored many different characters of many different orientations.

On Deceber 1, 1987, James Baldwin passed away in Saint Paul de Vence, France from stomach cancer after an impactful and acclaaimed writing career.

What’s Ramadan?

Celebrated by over two billion people around the world, Ramadan marks the holiest month of the year for Muslims. Starting March 10th 2024, Muslims worldwide eagerly began this sacred month and will end the month on April 9th. 

As the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan provides Muslims time for spiritual reflection, devotion, self-discipline, and community. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, during which Muslims fast from dawn until sunset. It commemorates the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). 

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, fundamental acts of worship that shape a Muslim’s life. The fast involves abstaining from food, drink, smoking, until sunset. It is not merely about refraining from food and drink but as well as from negative thoughts, actions, and behaviours.

For Muslims, Ramadan is an opportunity for them to deepen their connection with Allah (God) through increased prayer, recitation of the Quran, and acts of charity. Muslims believe that during Ramadan, the gates of heaven are open, and the gates of hell are closed, making it a perfect time for seeking forgiveness and to recieve blessings.

Overall, contrary to popular belief, Ramadan is more than just abstaining from food and drink; it is a time of spiritual and self-improvement. Through fasting and prayer, Muslims strive to strengthen their relationship with Allah (God)  and embody and implement positive values in their lives.

Keeper Of The Lost Cities Book Review (Books 7 & 8)

#7 Flashback

This novel is probably one of my least favorite additions to the story. Its kind of a filler book. The story starts off great, especially with Sophie and Fitz’s fight with the Neverseen. It got me wondering about the Neverseen’s plan and why we’re getting to see an encounter with them so early on, considering that they usually show up near the end of the story. So, after you’ve read the beginning, you’re settling in for another action-packed, riveting, always-keeping-you-on-the-edge-of-your-seat kind of installment. But…that’s not what this novel is like, after this it starts to drag.

The ending of this book is great too, we get to learn more about the trolls and more of the Lost Cities’ political drama. This time it seems like the Black Swan is completely prepared and there is no way their plan can fail, but once again, the Neverseen are a few steps ahead of them, though the Neverseen’s plan does kind of backfire. The book ends with some more action, Tam’s capture (another CRAZY turn of events), and another one of Shannon Messenger’s signature cliff hangers. But, what makes this book one of my least favorites is the middle. Sophie and Fitz spend most of the story in the Healing Center, and barely anything happens in this time, except for when Silveny’s babies are born, I’m so happy that they’re twins! Overall, this book is still a fun and interesting read, it just doesn’t rank as high as some of the other installments in this series.

 

#8 Legacy

I think Legacy is a great book. Starting off with Mr. Forkle’s theory about the Neverseen’s plan really helped. The theory makes a lot of sense to the reader since the Lost Cities are already so confusing and have so much going on, I think this gave a clearer idea of what the Neverseen are doing and tied everything we’ve learned in the previous books together. The book is titled Legacy and makes you wonder which Legacy we’re going to learn about in the story. The story is completely riveting, and since Tam is with the Neverseen and we only have some vague information about their next plan, you’re always curious about what’s going to happen next. Lady Gisela also finally makes a mistake with the planning, and Sophie’s group gets another sort-of win, even though Lady Gisela is able to get away, again. 

A new character is added to the squad as well! Even though Sophie is reluctant to let Maruca join the Black Swan she still ends up being part of the story, which I think is great since we realllyy need a Psionipath. By the end of the novel, you’re completely engrossed in the story and wondering what is going to happen to Keefe. Unfortunately Keefe doesn’t wake up until the next book in the series, so we don’t get to see. And then of course, the story ends in another cliff hanger. This isn’t my favorite installment in the series but its still completely enthralling and very well written, and you should definitely read it.

So yeah, those are my opinions on these two installments, I can’t wait to see what happens next!
