I know, I know; by now, your teachers, friends or maybe even a stranger has probably talked to you about this video. Shane Koyczan has touched millions with his ‘To This Day project and has helped victims of bullying get back up. I‘ve shared this video with many of my friends and it’s been powerful every time, but, this week, I shared it with one of my private, extra-curricular teachers and the reaction was different from the times when I was contemplating about To This Day with my friends (yes, we think deeply together, don’t ask). My teacher is actually more of a friend to me than he is an educational leader (in a good way), and he seldom gets serious about anything except for topics that involve Hitler or focusing on homework, but he surprised me with his reaction; he was completely silent. We discussed the video later, and I discovered how bullying affects everyone, even that tough teacher you have or your strict parents. Ending on a happier note, if you find this video inspiring or interesting, share it! Help spread awareness of bullying, and, for more of Shane Koyczan’s work, visit http://www.shanekoyczan.com/

For the past six weeks, I have committed to my school’s track and field team. At first, I wasn’t thinking how this experience would make any change in my life. I was wrong. In these six weeks, I learned an important life lesson.
It was my first time joining a sports team. I wasn’t looking forward to it. From the first day of tryouts, I never gave up. This was the lesson I learned from my coach and my fellow teammates. This wasn’t about you anymore. This was about the team. You are a part of the team.
In this experience, I never felt left out. There always someone there watch after you. I met many friends in these six weeks. I wasn’t good at running, but the coach didn’t cut me off. He wanted to see the effort of each student he coached. Results were important, but having fun and sportsmanship was the key.
Many of us think that we are not an athletic person. Sports are not my thing. Think again. Don’t feel afraid, when you are in high school, it is important to try new things. You never know what you are good at.
Being in a Calgary public school has brought me many surprises. Many of you don’t feel this way because you are used to it. In my old school, I never have this chance. This is the reason I do my best to challenge new things. Time went fast. In no time, you will be finishing high school.
Joining a sports team is not forever, but the memories you have will last. This is where we meet new friends. So when you hear your school has a sport, try out. Go for it!
Recent events have left me questioning my life. What am I doing here? What is my ultimate purpose? What is the purpose of the universe? If I were to leave this world right now, would I have any regrets? Am I simply a figment of my own imagination? I believe that I’ve isolated the two main occurrences that have led me to this self-evaluation, if you will.
First of all, I had a dream the other night (Oh yeah, I’m going there.) in which I was at this strange party of sorts with all of my friends and family. Among others, I saw a close friend of mine whom I have not gotten to see for many months. This person is someone who inspires me to be better every day and helps me to evaluate my choices more carefully. My dream was so realistic that I woke up in a bit of a confused daze. Did this really happen? Upon realization that it was indeed only a figment of my imagination, I got to wondering, “What if that had actually happened? Am I happy with the choices I have made up to this point? What would I say?” This may seem disjointed to many of you, but I felt this odd connection to my subconscious that made me yearn for something like what had taken place in my dream to happen.
Secondly, on the my way to school this morning, I had a near-death experience. I was walking to school from Heritage Station with my best friend when we had to stop and wait for the northbound train to pass. I waited until I thought it was clear to cross, not noticing that there was a southbound train coming at the same time. I started walking when I felt an arm thrust across my stomach. My friend had pulled me back away from the tracks a mere second before I would have been hit. If I had walked five more feet, I would be dead. The shock of nearly getting hit by a train only added to my confusion.
So here I sit at my kitchen table, mulling over what is, what could have been and what is to be. I can now see from experience how delicate and expendable life is. All the decisions I have ever made have led up to this moment. Where would I be if I had done even one seemingly insignificant thing differently? Being a teenager still partaking in the process of self-discovery, these last few days have done nothing except add to my confusion about the universe. Perhaps something will happen to illuminate my vision, but until such a time, I remain here, tangled in a web of the unknown.
Music. Does there really even have to be reasons? Everyone listens to it on the bus, while they’re studying, and especially when they’re partying. But if music is not already an essential part of your routine, here are three reasons why it should be.
Music Helps Connects People
From http://weheartit.com/entry/group/45638028
Music has this uncanny ability to bring people together. It is a language without borders that everyone is born with the ability to understand and relate to. It communicates the feelings of every individual and allows people to relate on a whole different level. Christine Stevens once said, “Music is a language that everyone speaks. Rhythm has the potential to harmonize, unify and take us to a new world that could promote peace, harmony and human connection.
‘Cuz it’s good for you!
From http://kyunderground.com/this-is-the-way-i-party/
Let’s be honest guys, sometimes we just need a little kick in life and music is one of the most effective mediums to provide it. It works as an essential piece on our lives to motivate us. We might just need a little Johnny Cash on a rainy day, but it helps lift our spirits and convey a message, both the world and ourselves.
Music Stimulates the Brain
From http://www.pinterest.com/pin/576390452281038797/
Whether you’re listening, imagining, or playing music, many parts of your brain are active. The brain is stimulated by all aspects of music and we can use that to our advantage. When a person plays an instrument, both hemispheres network together, something scientists believe is caused by playing from an early age.
Summer is nearing. We feel anticipation in the warming weather. The mornings are earlier and the nights are later. There are many great features of summer, particularly the “eat, sleep, and play” motto of summer vacation. With only a month and a half left of high school before summer starts, I am feeling a combination of sluggishness and excitement. It seems like my skills of slacking off are kicking in too early! But before the fun days can begin, final exams must be overcome. We cannot let ourselves fall short on the last and most important days of school. For those of us requiring a little motivation, think of school as a marathon. The last hundred meters are ahead, and the finish line is within sight. We’ve spent long, hard hours running this race, so pushing through in a sprint at the end will achieve a beautiful finish. Let us all put of our procrastination and laziness for the summer, and productively complete this school year with a bang!
The below infographic contains nine helpful tips to enhance your productivity. Enjoy!
Youth Week has brought Pandemonium Club to life at the Calgary Public Library in Forest Lawn. Several teens attended this after-school event in order to celebrate their love for the City of Bones books! Although I have only read the first book in the Mortal Instruments series, I very much enjoyed it along with the movie. I don’t generally indulge in popular YA novels, but after lots of pressure by many friends, I finally gave in. (Peer pressure can be good sometimes.)
All the participants at this event dressed up like shadow hunters and many were decorated with ruins. The event leader even went all out and got decked with good gadgets and weapons seen in the movie.
There were trivia games, testing the knowledge on the book facts which counted for points. Bonus points were awarded at the end for having the best costume. Aside from that, there were many other arts and crafts activities available as well.
Although I did not get to experience the full event (for reasons I will not go into right now, I’m looking at you, public transit), what I did get to see seemed like a lot of fun. Keep scrolling down for some photos that I took of the activities all the youth got to partake in!
Everyone got to design their own Mortal Cup, fashioned after the fabled cup depicted in the movie. When it was time to decide on the most “accurate” recreation, I was the judge. But I basically just went for the most glittery one. There was a glitter station where everyone could design or decorate themselves with rune tattoos.
Someone got slightly carried away with their glitter!
There was a table set up with the blue elixir that turned Simon into a rat. (Don’t worry, everyone was still a human at the end.)
Aside from physical activities, there was a strenuous trivia match which was dominated by one very smart Shadow Hunter. Prizes were awarded for their performance in their training, awards consisting of a copy of the City of Glass book and movie passes. No one was left out as there were t-shirts and City of Bones decorated mirrors for everyone.
Overall, everybody absolutely loved this event and no one went home without a smile on their face! When asked what could have been better about the event, I was met with a resounding, “You guys should do this for Divergent!”
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the sequel to the first Captain America movie (The First Avenger). When this movie came out I went to see it, even though I did not enjoy the first movie very much.
I will be analyzing Captain America for you to decide whether or not it is worth your money. I will be basing my review off three things the storyline, Special effects and the creativity.
I really liked how the storyline progressed and it even had a bit of mystery. It had a great beginning and eventually a great conclusion.
The special effects within this movie were spectacular, containing a wide variety of effects throughout the movie.
This movie could have contained a bit more new content. But with that, there is also some content taken from the Avengers movie, which fit into the other Marvel movies. If you are looking for something new, than this is not your movie.
Overall Captain America is a really great movie with an awesome story line, great special effects and a bit of creativity put into it. All these things made me like this movie more than the first Captain America, which is why I think this movie is worth the money for people who enjoy super hero movies.
Have a test coming up? Or a huge assignment? These five study tips will help you get on track and motivate you to do better.
1. Colour code your notes
This is the best technique, and is used by many people in every profession. In your planner, you can colour code things like exams, quizzes and assignments. Another really great tip is to have as many different colours as you possibly can because without that, it can be boring and hard to understand exactly what you have to do. When you have everything colour coordinated with bright bold colours, it motivates you to actually do that tasks. Also when it comes to textbooks or notes, colour code them according to what they tell you. For example: definitions are blue, important notes: green, hard to understand information/questions you have: yellow. You could also just underline the information discussed in class with a pen or pencil to refresh your memory because you know that you were apart of that discussion in class. Note: when listening to discussions it’s important that you have a good nights sleep so you can actually hear what others are saying and engage in the conversation.
2. Manage your time
You have to make sure that you manage your time, because honestly, we all know how hard it is to cram a whole semester’s information in one night. Exams can be really stressful, but by reviewing each night for every class, you do really well. Our brains retain information better when it is repeated again and again. I have friends who cram the night before and end up sleeping in other classes. They admit that by cramming for one class it affects their other classes as well because they are tired, and can’t pay attention or have anxiety. Set time for study sessions and make sure you actually study at least two days before the exam. Remember to put away all distractions, and grab a snack if it helps fuel your brain because nobody wants to study on an empty stomach.
3. Print out slideshows
How many times have you sat in class trying to write down all the vital information, while your teacher goes on and on about the steps, but you have no time to pay attention!? That’s me, almost every day. Sadly, we don’t have enough time to look at teacher talking and take down all the notes. Our brains have a hard time multitasking because what is written on the slide show may not be what your teacher is talking about, and she could be giving extra vital information but you are missing it because you are reading, interpreting, and writing down the information. I have found that by printing out sideshows or having them saved on to a electronic device like an iPad, you can pay attention in class and go read the notes at a later time. The slideshows or word document can be read before class, on the bus, before bed, and anywhere else. Due it the fact that you have listening to the teacher you already have retained the information so when you are reading you can make little notes, and skim through it much quicker. This is a great technique for all learning styles and helps your notes come to life!
4. Repetition
This one is pretty basic, but since you have vivid colors all over your material blinding you, you might as well put it to good use. When you read the highlighted information it will pop out to you, and though you should be reading the whole page, it is the coloured information that your brain will see as important, and it will make you aware to review it more thoroughly. Also if you have a row stuck or a job by having the highlighted information, you can quickly review notes because you don’t have to look for important notes, class discussion chapters, and definitions as it is all there for you. In addition when you read the pages review the information over and over again. Once you read page two, skim through page one again, and try to do that every time you encounter two new pages. It’s pretty amazing what relations can do for you. For example dancers have to go through the routines over and over again until it is engraved into their mind. Practice combined with repetition makes perfect!
5. Do not procrastinate
Ah, procrastination… an enemy and a best friend. This goes out to all my friends who stay up all night because they were surfing the web doing needless things. A study break for a couple minutes isn’t too big of a deal, but when it turns into a whole new job like baking something or taking a nap, it can really get you off track. Of course, our brain needs to take breaks. Every time you take a break, perhaps you should finish a chapter, or highlight the notes in the chapters ahead, because by doing that you are taking a break knowing that you have everything ready for when you come back. It makes life a bit easier, and you are rewarding yourself with a break!
With graduation and the end of the school year coming up, I can imagine that there will be quite a few parties. I have made a playlist of a bunch of songs from many different genres that are perfect for any dance or party that you may have. Enjoy!
These are just a few of my favorite party songs! You don’t have to play them in order, but just remember to mix up the songs between, pop, oldies, electronic and alternative so you don’t have the same genre of song all in a row! Have fun when you make a playlist but don’t only choose songs that you like. It is extremely important to have a variety of songs because it insures that there will be music for everyone, so they can have as much fun as possible too!
The products of 3-D printing seem endless, whether it is for better or for worse. Retrieved from here.
When one hears 3D, an automatic response would be to think of mega-blockbuster films. But the world of 3D reaches beyond those somewhat uncomfortable 3D glasses. The world of 3D printing has and continues to defy the impossible. Whether it is design, construction or medicine, 3D printing is being used every day to break down barriers, once considered impenetrable, in all aspects of society.
3D printing is most commonly used by architects, auto companies and engineers to bring life to their design through creating a model or prototype. The Hershey company is developing a printer for 3D chocolate (Yahoo Finance) and in Japan, engineers are diligently exploring the limits of design that the convenience of 3D printers allow.
However, in the world of medicine, more radical accomplishments have been made. In Holland, doctors at University Medical Center Utrecht have successfully performed a surgery that completely replaced a patient’s skull with a 3D version contrived of plastic. This surgery was the first of the sort. Prosthetic eyes have are in the works of mass printing, thus, making them more affordable and appeasing the consumer demand for better aesthetics. Printers that utilize enzymes and collagen as the “ink” are being developed by James Yoo at the Wake Forest School of Medicine in the United States. This ink will be printed and then layered onto tissue cells and skin cells, in order to form a skin graft. (CNN). These types of skin grafts will revolutionize the way that burn victims will be treated. Last summer, a prosthetic foot, created from silicone, was made for a duck amputee. Other forms of thermoplastic have been used in places, such as South Africa to treat victims of lost limbs. From head to toe, 3D printing is changing the world of medicine and beyond. (IFL Science).
Nearly anything can be built from these printers. However, this does raise the risk of weaponry being produced through the technology. With the increase in demand and production of 3D printers, it may not be long until 3D printers become a part of every household. Prices of some 3D printers can be offered at a low price of $1,500 and will soon be offered at a less expensive rate as production outsources to places like China. Yet, this means that 3D printers will be more wildly accessible and thus, increases the risk for antagonists to get hold of the product.
Before the dangers of having the ability to produce virtually anything reaches its zenith, it should be the responsibility for global security to establish laws and restrictions on this type of machinery. The time for action must be now, where the future of 3D printing becomes ever-so imminent in our world.
Imagine this: You’re ready to go on the best vacation of your life, anticipating the perilous lift off of the plane when… you realize you forgot to pack something you needed. I’m probably not the only one. Packing for a trip or vacation is usually an easy task, however, the creeping paranoia that can set in when you think you may have forgotten something is agonizing, and at some unfortunate times, correct. Not only that, but with vacation during the school year comes… missed class time, and of course, homework. Homework that when brought along on your trip may very well end up being done last minute (who hasn’t done this at least once before?) All in all, preparations for a trip can definitely bring anxiety, that can sometimes carry on to when you are actually on vacation. How to avoid these worrisome feelings, you ask? Well, read on, my friend, and find out three great tips!
Tip 1: Make a check list of what you need to pack.
Making a list sounds simple enough, but trust me when I say people tend to overlook doing this, and just make a mental list in their head. Unless you have a really accurate memory, your mental list of things to pack is sure to go awry somewhere, and writing out a check list makes everything much easier to keep track of. Also, don’t just generalize your list with words like clothing or toiletries. Be specific! Know exactly what kinds of clothes you’re going to pack by making a list of them; that way you won’t miss a thing. Don’t forget the important stuff either, like your phone and phone charger. Whatever you find is absolutely essential to pack with your should be on the list, so you don’t have to feel paranoid by it when you pack.
Tip 2: Try to finish your homework before going on vacation, or a least on the plane.
Going on vacation during school days, especially in high school, can be difficult. Depending on how long you’re gone for, you may find yourself with a pile of homework to do, otherwise you’ll find yourself playing catchup when you get back. To really fully enjoy your vacation, at least try to finish all the work for school you need to before you leave. If you have to, bring it with you. It’s so much better feeling accomplished going home after a nice vacation knowing you finished all your homework ahead of time than it is feeling dread knowing you’ll have to catch up and finish everything last minute when you get back.
Better now than never.
Tip 3: Double check everything before heading to the airport.
Yes, you read that right. Double check everything. With how long it takes to get through customs, it’s highly unlikely that once you get to the airport that if you forget something you’ll be able to quickly go home. The airport is pretty much the point of no return, so you better be sure that you’re all ready to go by then. Double check your list, and if you have any, double check the school work you’re bringing. Remember that forgetting even one thing can affect your mood for at least a part of the trip, especially if it was something you actually needed.
Alright, these are my three tips for how to prepare for a vacation. Hope that you keep these tips in mind next time you go on a trip!
Have trouble falling asleep? Find yourself always tired in the morning? Now there is a night-light that can help you get to sleep. This light is called the Drift Light and it is a scientifically designed light that “lulls” you to sleep. Designed by Saffron, it costs $29.
This light fades over the time span of over 37 minutes.

When seeking the perfect brunch location, a delicatessen is not normally the first image to pop into one’s mind, but then again, “Gruman’s Delicatessen is no ordinary deli.” Run by a family from Montreal, Gruman’s is a Jewish Delicatessen that offers traditional Jewish fare such as home cured lox and slow-roasted brisket, alongside Montreal-style deli foods, all made from family recipes. The owner, Peter Fraiberg, has been running restaurants and catering businesses in Calgary for over twenty years. In addition to this, Gruman’s offers other breakfast and lunch fare, making it a unique and refreshing brunch alternative to brunch places that one may be more familiar with.
Gruman’s restaurant is not one of Calgary’s urbanite brunch places where everything is trendily renovated. It is a rather plain squat building with sensible furnishings, but photos of the family dating back to the days of black and white photography furnish the walls and there is a celebratory feel to the restaurant that speaks of tradition and liveliness. The space is not lavished with all the newest styles, but walking in, it is easy to see that Gruman’s is run with a sense of familial pride; outstanding reviews lavish the front entrance and the deli counter at the rear of the restaurant is brimming with deli fair ranging from Montreal-smoked meat to Baba Ganoush. Walking in their front entrance, there are two ratings that stand out among the flood of praise; Gruman’s was recently featured on Food Network’s “You Gotta Eat Here,” and was voted Top New Restaurant on Urbanspoon in 2012.
Gruman’s exterior
Gruman’s is typically open on mornings and during lunch time, catering primarily to the influx of people from Calgary’s downtown area. On weekdays between 7 and 9 a.m., Gruman’s offers an early bird breakfast special, where patrons can get such quick and satisfying breakfasts on-the-go as a bagel with cheese, meat and egg for only $5.
At 11 a.m. on a Sunday, the light airy restaurant is, as most places throughout the city, quite full, and there is a short wait to be seated. That being said, the wait was nothing compared to other places, where the wait can often be 45 minutes and upward. For those hard of hearing, Gruman’s may not be the optimum brunch location as it was loud and busy, with lots of background noise. That being said, it could be quite the challenge finding a place that is not loud and busy during Sunday brunch. The staff at Gruman’s was friendly and informative, quick to answer questions about the restaurant and explain it’s history. During the typical “brunch” hours, at Gruman’s items off of the breakfast or lunch menu can be ordered.
Gruman’s offers a Smoked and Poached Breakfast Poutine, hashbrowns mixed with cheese curds and bits of Montreal-smoked meat, topped with poached eggs, and smothered in a lemon Hollandaise sauce, with a side of toast ($13). The cheese melted from the heat of the potatoes, and was gooey and delicious, especially combined with Gruman’s awesome Montreal-smoked meat, which had a smokey, rich, nutty flavour and was extremely tender. Their meat can be bought at their deli, and is definitely worth bringing home to bring sandwiches to the next level. The eggs were
Gruman’s Breakfast Poutine
poached perfectly, done as requested, and the Hollandaise was rich and creamy, with subtle and not overpowering tangs of lemon. The biggest complaint about this dish would be the hashbrowns, which could have been crisper. Also, rather than serving toast on the side, this dish would benefit from an extra smattering of curds or meat, or perhaps a side dish of fresh fruit to even out the artery-clogging meal. That being said, overall Gruman’s breakfast poutine was highly comparable to other high-end breakfast places, with the Montreal smoked meat being its winning feature.
For lunch fare Gruman’s offers a selection of traditional Jewish foods,
The Chicken Club
soups, salads, sandwiches, such as the Chicken Club, and other popular lunch fare (such as poutine). The Chicken Breast Club comes with herbed chicken breast on a toasted bun topped with “applewood smoked cheddar, pancetta tomato, lettuce, red onion, and caramelized onion aioli” with a side of coleslaw, and a side of fries that can be subbed for another deli selection, such as Gruman’s popular potato salad ($15). The chicken was tender and well done, with the cheddar adding a hint smokey aftertaste and the pancetta providing the slightest salty, mouthwatering flavour. The coleslaw was vinegary, but flavoured with skill, not overpoweringly of vinegar, but not sweet either, like it can be at some places. The potato salad was mild, creamy, and again, not sweet, like can often be the case. Overall, the chicken club was a healthy, protein-packed lunch selection that also doubled as a deliciously savoury treat.
All in all, Gruman’s is a quaint, family-run deli worth supporting. The love
The deli counter at Grumans
and care that is put into the recipes, which have been handed down over generations, is outstanding, and the products Gruman’s offers proves it. The Montreal-smoked meat is phenomenal, as other selections such as the lox surely are, and Gruman’s is definitely a place worth going back to try all of the selections. It is also helpful to note that Gruman’s caters even, so if hosting an event, Gruman’s would be a unique independent to choose, and sure to be enjoyed due to its superior quality and flavour.
Gruman’s is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., and on Sundays from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. It is located at 230, 11 Ave SE.
