Where would we be? (Short Story)

0

“There are infinite possibilities for what our lives can be. But only one reality we can live in. Only one we’ll ever know” – ONE by Wong Fu Productions.

I could’ve tried counting every star I saw that night but I would be nothing more than a rotting skeleton before I finished a quarter of the way. Aside the few lamps that were around the house, the stars were the brightest of lights that night. The nippy March winds I was so used to, unlike most nights, didn’t plow through the neighborhood and I was happy for that: it had been an eternity or more since I was out on my porch to star gaze without either freezing or overheating. Much to my surprise, out of all those nights where I star gazed, I wasn’t alone to count them.

I promised her a long time ago that my porch had a spectacular view of the evening sky during the right time. That night was a total gamble; I had no idea.  Whenever I looked at Lara, I saw starlight bounce off her beautiful blue eyes, easily becoming two pieces of glimmering sapphire as she gazed up into space mindlessly like a zombie. Those short brunette locks of hers were lit up like a Christmas tree, shimmering with the gentle breeze that flew by. She was warmer than the sun that wasn’t going to be up for another few hours, and in just a pair of black sweats, a t-shirt and a white hoodie that was once mine, I was baffled but comfortable by her warmth. She seemed so relaxed, so at home beside me. She didn’t mention it at all, then again she doesn’t tell me much anyway, but I didn’t need to hear her say that that night was a night she wouldn’t want to be anywhere else than with me.

“I’m happy we’re here,” I muttered underneath the breeze, gently pecking the top of her head with a kiss. She wrestled a little bit to get comfortable, which I didn’t mind.

Just to make conversation, I raised my finger towards the sky. “Do you see that star over there, Lara? Look beyond that and there is a world where everything seems ordinary but the number one highest-paid job in any country is by doing absolutely nothing.” She giggled a little bit at my stupid joke. I pointed my finger in the other direction and, speaking in a stupid accent, “and over there, in that planet, is where everyone talks like this.” Her giggles became louder. “It’s been theorized that there is more than just one universe other than our own, and because of that, there is another kind of planet that is like ours. So it seems there is more than one kind of me, and I dearly hope they all have someone like you.”

I could feel that she cracked a smile underneath me; I didn’t need to see it to know. A few seconds of silence were broken when Lara asked me, “Where would we be?”

I snapped out of the fantasy the stars lulled me into. Lara sat up on the edge of the lawn chair, taking my hand tenderly. She stared into my eyes with a curious glare. She mumbled again with a brief smile, “where would we be if I never forgave you? What about if we never had that fight in the first place? And what if we never met each other at all, like what if we never became a couple?”

It was like she tunneled through every thought in my head. For a time that I learned one of the most valuable lessons I could’ve learned, those questions were all answered in my brain after our first fight a few months ago. That fight struck a blow low enough that we hadn’t spoken for days. I had been interrogating myself with those three questions: what if we never forgave, what if we never fought, and what if we never forged relentlessly, and each time I did, they were becoming more of a reality than the thought implied. How I was able to win her back remains my greatest triumph because I had almost lost the one fish in the sea that I don’t ever dare to throw back. I didn’t want to lie to Lara; she didn’t deserve a liar, so I took a deep breath in.

“Where we would be… it isn’t exactly a happy place, Lara,” I mumbled, slightly hesitant with the words that came through. “If you never forgave, then it ends badly. If we never fought, it ends badly. If we never forged… that is a completely different story.”

She gripped onto my hand tighter. “Tell me about them.”

I was nervous to. At the same time, I feared to.

A brief pause brought me back a few months ago. Though the both of us were incredibly tired, Lara and I were talking to each other through Facebook on a Friday night in November. The words I had said to her that night… I prayed that I could take them back. If I had stopped talking when I could, almost a week of silence and regret would be but a fantasy. Her friends always mattered more to her than me, so what right did I have to say she didn’t care for them? They were there longer than I was: some only for a couple of years while others were there her entire life, and then there was me who wasn’t even there for a single year yet. I learned my lesson the hard way, and as much as I tried burying that problem into the ground, Lara’s question couldn’t be answered without mentioning that event.

“Where we would be if we never forgave is an obvious outcome,” I began, a little hesitant but more comfortably as I looked at Lara. “That was only one fight and one week of not talking. Give it we never forgave, the “one” in both of those is gone. One fight turns into two, three, four, and then the pain escalates as each one comes and stays. One “sorry” after another starts to become pointless to me, realizing I’m just wasting my time for a cause that only got worse. You’d hide your friends and family away from me, all the while they’d feed you lies on how I’ve changed or I’m willing to forgive and forget.”

She nodded her head, agreeing with a majority of everything that I was saying. “One week of not talking then turns into two, and then three, maybe four. With the passing days, we start to hate each other twice as more than we did yesterday, and with that flame of hate ignited, the flame of our love becomes non-existent; it’s up in smoke. As soon as that flame of hate blows away, love isn’t going to come back. What we were before is nothing more than a candle that can’t be lit anymore.”

I took a hesitant breath. Lara, although paying attention to every word my lips muttered underneath the slight breeze that blew every now and then, didn’t speak or mutter even the faintest sound.

“What if we never fought sounds like a good idea – well, until you consider the fact that I become worse,” I forced venomously. Confused and bewildered, Lara’s eyes drifted off into the stars; I knew she was listening to me, but it was so typical of her to act like she wasn’t. Like she was hearing voices in her head, she hummed a tune, but I knew well that she wanted me to continue. “It was you who mentioned what I had been doing wrong, but if you didn’t ever bring it up – I wouldn’t ever know. I’m oblivious as it is, so if you brushed that off your shoulder without telling me, then I will become a terrible person.”

“I see myself saying that I am the most important person to you: your happiness, your excitement and everything in between would be because of me. If you had accomplished an absolutely spectacular sketch, let’s say, I would say I was your inspiration even though I had zero knowledge of it. If you had passed a test, I would say I helped you study when, in fact, someone else like Ally or Ben helped you. I would make it seem like you couldn’t live without me. I would take you away from your family and friends in the wrong way, the horrendous thought “I’m more important” poisoning everything in me. I would become selfish, inconsiderate, and someone who should be in jail for treating you like that.”

Still, after everything that Lara had been hearing, she hadn’t uttered a single letter. She must’ve been taking everything in still, or maybe she was denying everything I was saying. Maybe she wanted a plate of the lasagna that was left out on the table inside the house, I don’t know, but one thing was for sure: she was listening.

I choked a little. “What if we never forged” was the last thing she wanted to know, and maybe the last thing I wanted to mention.

“What if we never forged, the way I see it, is the worst of all three,” I said softly, grasping her hand tight, “for this one reason: I would feel none of this. Everything that I am feeling for you is unique to you alone, but how could I know what all of this feel like if I denied you? I wouldn’t know what it would be like to feel a first kiss or a first dance the way we felt them, Lara, and to this day, I was always scared to think about it.”

“Walking down the halls with both of my hands occupied, I wouldn’t see the love of my life walking down those same halls. I would see a friend of mine, just another person that I share common interests with. We’d talk for only a few minutes, 10 minutes straight if we’re lucky, compared to now when you and I talk for a few hours, 10 as the minimum. You would be part of the many reasons why I wake up in the morning instead of being a separate and special reason. Days and nights can pass by quietly and you wouldn’t be in my mind, and I wouldn’t be in yours. Love wouldn’t come my way like this, and it wouldn’t come to you either.”

For what felt like weeks, a grim and unsettling silence settled blindly once I was finished speaking. Lara’s eyes were locked against the chipped wood on the porch, a collective rhythm she had on her breaths. Her grip on my hand was becoming loose, her tender fingers slipping away from me. My heart was already beginning to hurt… I mean, I lost them once already…

We hadn’t spoken about topics like possibilities since she broke up with me a month ago. For days we tried diverting attention away from topics as sensitive like this; we had been doing well as friends and breaking that flow scares me – what would happen if it did break? Not since a month ago was I able to talk to her alone like that night, and out of everything that we could have been talking about, she wanted to talk about that. I didn’t blame her for asking: I had been meaning to tell her all about these questions. I guess I just didn’t know when the right time to bring it up was, and up until that night I thought I was too late.

“Where would we be…” Lara muttered, her sudden voice a gentle shock since she had been mute since I began. All of a sudden, her grip against my hand tightened. She peered back at me shyly, and that beautiful smile of hers began to form. I hadn’t seen her smile like that to me in ages, our breakup taking such a toll on me that I almost forgot a smile like hers.

She took my hand and coiled all of my fingers except for my pointer finger. She directed that finger onto the wood on my porch. I gazed at her with an intense curiosity; what was she doing? Her breaths then became hesitant, her body shivered, and with those two pieces of sapphire looking lovingly at me, she started to talk.

“If I never forgave you, then we would have avoided each other the entire night at the dance two weeks later, huh? If I never fought with you, then you would never see the chinks in your armor, is that right?” For a girl whose touch was warming, her words sent uneasy chills down my back. “And if I said I liked you, I would have never felt like the princess that you had promised you’d make me feel like when we first began?”

I nodded my head.

Without warning whatsoever, Lara leaned in and kissed me. Shocked beyond the sound barrier, a daunting chill ran down my spine with cleats laced on. I kissed her back, closing my eyes and reminiscing what it had been like to kiss her. With my finger still pointing down against the porch, she detached from my lips. It was like she flipped the off switch inside of me because of that kiss, I had been indefinitely frozen where I sat.

“Then, Daniel, out of all the universes that can exist out there, leave me here – with you.”

I hope you have enjoyed this little short story that I wrote a few months ago. It’s one of the best short stories that I’ve written for many reasons and I am glad to share it with you. I don’t know how much of my writing I will share here as this is a new thing but if you seem to enjoy that, then for sure, I’m going to post another one again.

5 quick tips on communication for a healthy relationship

0

Every relationship has its ups and downs. Life is as full of difficulties as it is full of happiness. In my opinion, a healthy relationship is not the same as a perfect relationship. A healthy relationship occur when effort takes place and problems are solved. Perfect relationships in which there are zero conflicts don’t exist; they are superficial. Communication is key! Getting to know each other through words is the most efficient and effective way to understanding a friend, and becoming closer with them. Friends are valuable people, so make an effort to keep them! Here are five quick tips on healthy communication:

  1. Do not be afraid to share your thoughts: Be open with your emotions – if you need help from one of your friends, seek it! If someone truly is your friend, they will try to be accepting of who you are. Do not be afraid of speaking out, but be polite. Friends can offer good advice and consolation – trust them to be there for you.
  2. Always, always talk it out: Say you’ve gotten into a fight with your best friend, and you haven’t talked to each other for a while. If the both of you are holding a grudge, be the bigger person and break the silence. Recognize the issue at hand, and develop a common purpose to resolve the situation. Cooperate to reach a compromise and an understanding between friends.
  3. Try to accept and understand: Make an effort to understand others, and yourself as well. Imagine yourself in their shoes, and see their perspectives. Let them feel understood – be on the same page of the conversation! It becomes much more comfortable to speak when safety and security of emotion have been established.
  4. Be optimistic and patient: Be open to new ideas, and don’t start up a conversation if you insist on staying negative. Believe in the good in others, and the good in life. Talk with good intentions, and share optimism; let the optimism of others affect you. Even if you have issues to discuss, be optimistic that adversity will be overcome in time.
  5. Appreciate: Appreciate others and their differences. Appreciate people for who they are and what they have accomplished. Diversity exists in all aspects in life, so learn to enjoy people and their words.

Treat others the way you want to be treated, and hope they will treat you with a similar respect! There are many ways on maintaining healthy  relationships. Any thoughts on how to build better communication? Leave a thought in the comment section.

Marketing Genius: IKEA’s bookbook™

0

Sleek lines in front of an intently lit grey backdrop, the 2015 IKEA Catalogue is coming to your stands soon. Wait, what was that? What people would normally expect to be the milieu for an Apple product, IKEA parodies Apple’s advertising scheme to create an ingenious marketing scheme of their own. The bookbook™ mocks the highly valued Mac book through displaying its own features. See the video here:

Everyone is used to the modern video features of the common Apple commercial, great editing combined with a clean aura. Apple has always ruled their marketing campaigns. Hence, the frenzy of people awaiting to buy the new iPhone each year, or perhaps, even the iWatch (Apple Watch) debuting later this year. Consumerism of products from companies, such as Apple, becomes this ridiculous cycle of renewing a perfectly functional device for the new model. But people give in; they always give in. It is simply because of clever marketing strategies. Apple is selling sophistication, with a modern flair. Everyone wants to live the Apple lifestyle.

IKEA’s commercial for the bookbook™ satirizes this marketing cycle by introducing the new features and design of their 2015 catalogue. The Swedish company brings a modern element to the archaic idea of a book. Catalogues have become an outdated idea on its own. But IKEA refreshes the poor catalogue and salvages it from dumpsters across the globe. Their commercial has brought over 10 million views on YouTube. It has become a trending topic on Facebook and Twitter. IKEA takes the stylish advertisements of Apple and dominates it with their own twist. Who knew a book could be this sleek?

Discovering DNA in the streets of YYC

0

So there I was, walking through the evening rush at Stephen Avenue. People were filtering out of buildings, for it was finally time to go back home and relax with a cup of coffee on that chilly (summer/fall) day. Music resonating in my ears, I stumbled (literally stumbled- I had  tripped on my own feet a few steps prior) across these people who were showing real DNA. Naturally, I found myself gravitating towards the station; a smiling young man greeted me and offered me a piece of strawberry in a Ziploc bag, asking me to crush it.

I obliged, battling the cold breeze (I had been sick the entire week, thus the effect was worse on me). Using all the strength I could draw from my frozen knuckles, I crushed them. An equally enthusiastic woman appeared, pouring soap solution into the plastic bag, asking me to ensure it was mixed well, and I did so.

post 3
That’s me, fully focused on crushing the strawberry piece! 😛
post 1
The crushed strawberry-soap solution, after being filtered with a cheesecloth!

Here’s the interesting part.

The crushed strawberry was poured down a cheesecloth into a test tube, into which isopropyl alcohol was added.

And the DNA was suspended into the alcohol!

I couldn’t contain my surprise and extreme joy upon seeing such a miracle. I almost did a victory dance.

post 4
In my head, there was a happy dance going on. It takes a lot to maintain one’s composure, y’know!

Yes, I have a victory dance.

(To a student of modern science, it is things as such that cause the most happiness 🙂 )

So what actually caused the DNA to separate?

Here’s the “magic”!

When the strawberry was crushed by me, the cells separated, the effect which was heightened by the addition of the soap solution which further weakened the bonds between the cells. Isopropyl alcohol floated atop the strawberry-soap solution, and pulled the DNA towards itself, thus leaving me speechless.

post 6
Thank you guys! I don’t know who you are, but what you guys are doing is truly amazing 🙂

Although I took a picture of them, I had been in a hurry and thus note down their names or which organisation they are from. If any one of you knows either of them, please say “thank you”! I feel so enlightened, and honestly, I smiled and whistled all the way home.

So, the lesson of the day is, go exploring. Visit places you’d normally avoid. You never know what you may find there 🙂

ISIS influence looms over the west as third beheading video is released

Grief and hesitance hang in the air today, as a third video was released by the radical terrorist group ISIS, showing the beheading of a British Humanitarian Aid worker David Haines. The executioner in the video, named by the media as Jihad John, had also threatened to behead yet another H.A. worker if the U.K does not stop supporting the U.S. in their airstrikes, which begs the question: Why are the airstrikes not working? Just how might the U.S. dismantle this ever-growing terrorist cell?

If you aren’t already aware, ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) is a Sunni (a branch of Islam) militant group with cells in Iraq and Syria. Lead by extremist Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, ISIS rose to power after the U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq in 2011. Baghdadi gained supporters and followers in Iraq with his discrimination of the Iraqi Sunnis based on Iraq’s economic and political downfall (ominously resembling Hitler’s attack on the Jews in WWII). Along with the Sunnis, ISIS also aim to eradicate other minority groups in Iraq, like the Shiites; and claiming that their religion is the one true religion, and that anyone who opposes their ideals do not deserve to live.  (theatlantic.com)

ISIS currently control almost half of Iraq territories and the northeastern part of Syria. Their series of brutal conquests have left the world in shock, with what could only be described as a clear violation to human rights. Even the terrorist group Al-Qaeda has severed ties with ISIS due to their uncontrollable brutality. With U.N. reports detailing the beheading, executions, crucifying, and raping of thousands of innocent civilians, we can’t help but agree with Al-Qaeda, just this once. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry calls on the world to rally against the ISIS threat, claiming that it is not an issue that we (the U.S.) should face alone. (nydailynews.com)

In an attempt to quell this fire, President Obama had authorized numerous airstrikes on ISIS territories, hoping to hinder their operations. In response to the attacks, ISIS released two beheading videos of American journalists, showing what would happen to more American hostages if the U.S. continues to interfeere in ISIS’s affairs. The third and most recent beheading -with the execution of British humanitarian aids worker David Haines- was a message to the British Prime Minister David Cameron, stating that his death was directly the fault of Cameron for aiding the U.S. in their airstrikes. Now, as the s airstrikes against ISIS hot zones prove ineffective, President Obama feverishly plans the possibly imminent war against the terrorist group.

"[we] will hunt down those responsible and bring them to justice, no matter how long it takes. They are not Muslims, they are monsters." - David Cameron
“[we] will hunt down those responsible and bring them to justice, no matter how long it takes. They are not Muslims, they are monsters.” – David Cameron       (Source: independent.co.uk)

One reason that ISIS’s influence has been so predominant even in the western world is due to their usage of the power of social media. With postings of recruitment videos and sites with their manifestos, ISIS has managed to enlist countless adults and teens (mostly) to their cause. Preying on individuals that doesn’t fit in society norms, ISIS propaganda aims to invoke emotions of belonging and understanding of that individual. Many Canadians have already been fighting and dying among ISIS ranks, some hit close to home. At least five Calgarians have been identified as the perpetrators of car bombers and guerrilla fighters in Iraq. One Chris Boudreau of Calgary, reached out to Canada, stating, ““We need to reach out to youth before they take that last drastic step of going overseas and getting way deeply involved in the trenches out there.” Chris is the mother of a 22-year-old converter who died in Syria fighting in the name of ISIS. (globeandmail.com)

Outcry of Muslims from all over the world are heard, as they condemn ISIS’s actions and messages, stating that they do not represent the views of their peaceful religion. Closer to home, Muslims from the Muslims community and the Calgary Police meet in order to find out how to root out the poison that has been infecting our young minds.

All over the world, people are finding ways to cope with this coming storm. As a society, we need to stand stronger than ever, and remain adamant to our ideals. Only together can we hope to defeat the evils of this world.

Are we modest for the right reasons?

0

Disclaimer: This post reflects my personal opinion and should only be regarded as such. This does not necessarily reflect the opinion of Youth Are Awesome or Youth Central. The topic of modesty is controversial and I therefore warn you that some content may offend some people with differing opinions.

Pretty much every girl in our generation, since a very young age, has been told time and time again to cover up, as not to be looked down upon as a quote unquote slut by fellow females or as a sexual object by males. There’s something about this that has bothered me for the longest time; something just doesn’t add up quite right. There is a distinct double standard here, because society also shows us that that sexuality is something that needs to be constantly put on display.

Trying to get Nicki Minaj to wear even a little bit more would be like trying to tame Godzilla. A good example? I think not.

Girls are basically told that they need to protect themselves from the power of their bodies. By refusing to cover up all cleavage, midriff and shoulders, girls can “create impure thoughts in the minds of males” and are sometimes “just asking for it” and subject themselves to the judgment of their peers. In the same way, boys are taught, not necessarily directly, that it’s alright to objectify women who choose not to be modestly dressed at all times and that those who are modest are all prudes, all while not being held to the same judgment and standards. This is NOT to say that all men have a glaring disregard toward the respect of women. Very few truly do. The ones who view women as their equals and not as sexual objects are not the problem here. The problem is not only the men who are blinded by sexual intent due to societal standards, but also the women who feel that they need to get attention from men in that way and anyone, male or female, who views this unwritten social “rule of thumb” as being completely true in all situations.

The key word here is respect

Women should not need to feel that they need to be modest to protect themselves from this sort of “rape culture” that seems to have worked its way into our society. Modesty is a product of self-respect and respect for the people around you. It is not something that can or should be forced. However, it is something that is absolutely necessary in educational and professional environments. Going to school or to work scantily clad does not only show that you have a lack of respect for your own body, but also for your fellow students, your teachers and/or colleagues. As much as dress codes, especially in schools, may seem a bit overkill or unaccommodating at times, also keep in mind that not only are they a matter of respect, but of safety also.

A proposed solution: Improved education

From my observations, what I feel would be most effective in not only encouraging young girls to respect themselves and to get rid of the stigma attached to modesty is better education in this particular area. Instead of just teaching girls to cover up to protect themselves, we need to teach them that the entire root of the concept of modesty is in something as simple as respect. I know that in many schools and educational settings today, they try to teach that what is portrayed by the media isn’t necessarily something to aspire to. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s not really working. Not only does it a lot of times come off as preachy, but in case you hadn’t noticed, even with the sort of intervention that has been implemented up to this point, many girls just aren’t getting it. How many young girls still look up to false idols like Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj, Miley Cyrus or Britney Spears, among others or make fashion choices solely on what’s in magazines and “in style?” Not to say that today’s methods are completely useless, but they just aren’t having the effect that a lot of people would like to see. By improving the ways that we talk to girls about being modest for the right reasons, we can propagate a more effective solution to this deeply rooted issue.

People everywhere look up to Kate Middleton, not only as a royal, but as a fashion icon. She's a great example in showing that you can be beautiful and get positive attention without being half-naked.
People everywhere look up to Kate Middleton, not only as a royal, but as a fashion icon. She’s a great example in showing that you can be beautiful and get positive attention without being half-naked.

There’s a time and a place for everything

Now, my entire point here was most certainly not to say that you shouldn’t wear certain articles of clothing because they’re immodest and disrespectful and that everyone needs to be modest at all times. That’s not what I’m saying at all. What I’m saying is that we need to be actively conscious of the situations in which we choose to wear certain things. It’s completely appropriate to wear a spaghetti strap top and short shorts in casual and seasonal situations. Wearing a tube top and a short skirt in a school or professional setting is completely inappropriate. Every piece of clothing known to humanity has a time and a place where it can be worn respectfully (although some things should really only be used as beachwear…). What we need to do is strike a balance between comfort, personal taste and respectful situational awareness. Modesty is not, in many cases, covering up (sometimes to the point of discomfort), but is picking clothing appropriate for the time and place.

Finally, I would just like to leave you with something to think about. If everyone respected each other with the same level that they would expect in return, how would our fashion choices change? How would we see each other? How would the way girls are raised change? How would society respond? These questions are all integral to the concept of modesty as a whole. The next step is to implement solutions, stamp out the stigma and get rid of the double standard. How would the world look then?

Back to school sleep tips

0

Sleep is a big issue among teens. I know that we stay up all night doing our homework and then end up sleeping five hours or less because we don’t want to be late for first period. Of course the main reason for that could be procrastination, job, volunteering, sports or anything else that you has to be done after school. Below are some quick fixes to the inevitable all-nighters.

Stick to a schedule

You have to make sure that you have to wake up every day around the same time. I’ve known people who slept at the same time everyday, and were actually be able to wake up and catch the bus because their bodies naturally woke them up. Thus, every night you should sleep around the same time or just a half an hour off if there was something that came up. This is vital, because it will help regulate your sleep times and the natural body clock. Napping is a must! However, you should always make sure you don’t sleep longer than an hour.

Snooze-off

This can be a difficulty because we all love to hit that snooze button in the morning. But, that will only perpetuate a horrible sleep cycle. If you feel the urge to reset that body clock, wake up at 7 a.m. and try to take in at least 15 minutes of gorgeous sunshine. It may seem weird, but it works, and is super relaxing! There are also many apps on the market like Sleep Cycle that would help regulate your sleep patterns and help you calculate what time you should sleep, etc. That is a bit against the whole don’t use your electronic devices before you sleep, but if it is just for a minute or two and will help your sleep cycle, why not!?

Set a mood

It is always great to give yourself a sleep curfew. I know it sounds like a bit like something your parents would do, but the impact is greater if you pick on for yourself. No one knows you and your priorities better than you. The curfew will also help you get into that great bed time mood. Other things you could do are turning off the televison, iPhone, and anything else with a bright screen! It sounds harsh and boring because we are so used to our devices. However, it is for the best. Something you could do is do your homework, read a book (there are so many), a magazine, paint your nails, journal, paint or draw. In addition, you could throw one of those amazing lush bath bombs in the tub, dim the lights, and relax!

Free Your Mind: Mindfulness

0

Mindfulness means being in the moment, and not being on what what would be called an “automatic pilot” mode. Since we are all so busy with our lives, we are not fully conscious or aware of what we are essentially doing. By being a mindful person, it would mean that you would be present in the moment and would not think about the past nor the future. In addition, you are fully aware of yourself. Being mindful can really transform our lives, because we are constantly being bombarded by information everyday in our life. People are always talking about detoxing the body, but what about detoxing the mind? When you begin to practice mindfulness you will notice that your stress levels will reduce, positive changes will emerge, and you will feel wonderful.

LOOK FOR A SPACE

The first step to the whole mindful practice would be to search for a space. It is important to have a place where you can sit down, and practice mindfulness. However, you can do this anywhere when you feel the need to become more centred. You could lay down on to your bed, or sit in your chair and raise your legs or simply go traditional and cross your legs. It is your decision. If you are at work you could find a quiet place and sit there for 10 minutes, without any distractions.

CONCENTRATE ON BREATHING

This is something we do everyday. It’s an involuntary response that we do no think about much. However, this is something that we are not very conscious of. When you concentrate on your breathing, what you want to do is close your eyes. Next you would want to focus on your breathing pattern. When you are breathing in, try to visualize the air entering your body. Then when you exhale visualize the air exiting your body. Taking deep breaths will help calm that racing mind. If you feel the need to count to three, then do that also.

OBSERVE

You should listen to the sounds that surround you. Use all your five senses: hear, touch, smell, see, and listen. Don’t confuse mindfulness with blocking things out. It is not about that. You are not trying to get your head to be empty. Instead, you are trying to embed yourself into the present moment. Try to be non-judgemental and pay attention to your surroundings. Build a connection with all your senses, and welcome them.

SCAN YOURSELF

This may be uncomfortable. Many of us don’t even know what our bodies truly look like. Start from the top of your head and work your way down to your toes, scanning evey part. Notice any discomfort or tension that you feel. It’s about the present moment and understanding your body. This is a great way to accept yourself, and know yourself better than anyone else.

FREE MIND

It’s inevitable that your mind will wander. You will being thinking about what so and so said, or the million things you have in your to do list. This happens to everyone, so don’t worry. When this does occur what you should do is focus all your energy on your sitting or standing. Then repeat “sitting” or “standing” to yourself several times to help you feel present in the moment again. Then also try to bring your mind back to your breath.

AWARENESS

Being aware is very important in everyday life. You shouldn’t go on living a fast paced life, knowing that at the end of the day your wouldn’t be able to recite what just happened. You could try to notice how the chair feels against your body. Become aware of your posture, and how you feel in that present moment.

EVERYDAY MINDFULNESS

You cannot just become a mindful person by sitting for 10 minutes cross legged in a chair. You have to enjoy everything that you do. This can be achieved when you concentrate on your food when you are eating. Try to pay attention to the foods taste and texture rather than just gobbling it down. For example, the next time when you unload the dishwasher you could concentrate on unloading the dishes, rather than thinking about what you will do next.

Mindfulness is all about an activity, a state in which you are being present, rather than it being a conscious activity. Some great free apps include: Mindfulness Daily and Omvana, which will aid in the mindfulness that you should take part in daily.

3 motivational quotes

Everyone feels down in the dumps once in a while. It’s normal, but that does not mean it doesn’t take determination or will power to keep moving forward. September, for most, marks the beginning of deadlines, oral presentations, heavy tests, and hours of studying. During these heavy loaded times, remember to always take time aside for you. Always remember to do something you love and take care of yourself. If you’re in a stressful situation whether it be academic or personal don’t be afraid to step outside that moment and just allow yourself to breathe. Talk to someone that is there for you to help you in moving past or solving those problems. If you don’t understand something in class ask someone who knows. Don’t be afraid to speak out and act to improve your life and make it at least a tad bit easier.

Motivation to keep going through tough times can come from a lot of things. It can come from encouraging words from your guardians, friends, or even that poster with that saying in that class that you stare at mindlessly for minutes. You might even get motivated by imagining yourself FINALLY reaching that goal that you are working so tirelessly for.

A lot of things get me to put pause on the cat videos to finish something on my to-do list. One of those things, are quotes. The following three quotes, are one’s that I find myself thinking of often. They’ve aided in shaping my views and made acceptance of what is and what can be, better.

Why you should leave your phone at home

0

In a time where the phone is your greatest obsession, you may be wondering what could possibly be the reasons to leave your phone at home. We grab our phone before we go out like it’s an involuntary response, just like grabbing our keys, wallet, or purse. Yet there is a reason behind why you should sometimes decide to leave your phone at home. Here is a list of some of the sound reasons behind making this hard, but hopefully rewarding decision.

1. MANNERS

If there is no other reason behind leaving your phone at home, leaving it for good manners would be the best! I always wonder why people make social arrangements with people if they are going to spend the whole time talking to their other “friends.” This completely beats the purpose, and makes you look like a bad person. If so one is taking the time out of their day to hangout with you, don’t show up, and make it seem like you aren’t even there. Even couples go on dates now days and don’t talk. It looks absurd. In addition, when you go to a movie, it’s good to know you won’t be pulling your phone out while watching the movie. Thus you will have good manners.

2. NO NEED

If you feel that you don’t really need the phone to be with you, then why take it? It becomes one less thing to worry about, and you might gain more experience in an event etc. by not having your phone with you, you won’t be interrupted by business calls, and texts. Before a cellphone became a “must,” we used to manage perfectly well too!

3. SWITCH OFF

We become so emotionally connected to our phone that we don’t give ourselves time to switch off. That is something that is a must. When you switch off by leave your phone at home it keeps you from remembering all the demands that people have on you. If you go out to the lake or beach, your state of serenity can easily break when you get a call from someone regarding work, etc. These messages can be put off until later.

4. GONE

Believe it or not, phones are valuable things. Since most phones are smartphones it makes it more attractive to people who want to do phone thefts. Smart phones are worth quite a bit of money, so by leaving it at home you reduce your risk of it getting taken. For example, if you go to a party, try to have a backup phone that is no use besides calling in case of an emergency. This way you are safe and so is your phone. In addition, by having one of those 1900s phones it will reduce your urge to pull it out. Thus still abiding by that whole leave your phone at home rule.

5. ADDICTION

This may be in regards to that new app, or even taking selfies all day long. There has actually been a selfie addiction with many people around the world. If you open up your phone now I bet you have taken copious amounts of selfies. Selfies are convenient because you can take a picture wherever you want, whenever you want without having to ask others. However, it can get out of hand. If you find yourself hooked to your phone, or it’s difficult to resist looking at it, it is time to cut it out.

Phones are a useful tool. However, they should never take control of you. You control your phone, so don’t let it control you. We have become independent on phones. Thus we should try our best to have direct conversations with friends whenever we can. And talking through text with no face to face contact can actually make you acquire mental illness overtime. In addition, staring at a screen all day is detrimental to our eyes.

“Why do we fall, Master Wayne?” (The Dark Knight meets life)

0

“Why do we fall? So that we can learn to pick ourselves up” — Alfred Pennyworth, Batman Begins. There’s no denying that even without alien powers or elemental manipulation, Batman has the power and determination (plus A LOT of notable equipment) to overcome any conflict and just because you might not have the power to climb over your obstacles so easily, doesn’t mean it’s going to keep you down there in the dirty, rotten hole that you’re suffering in. Get ready to face the bats as The Dark Knight meets life.

SPOILER WARNING: I’ll be mentioning events from Christopher Nolan’s trilogy of Batman so if you haven’t watched any them yet, shut this blog down, turn your laptop off or leave it on if you’re going to stream it online, and watch this trilogy. RIGHT. THIS. SECOND!!! And if you think I’m referring to everything in Batman’s universe, I’m only referring to Nolan’s trilogy so PLEASE don’t geek out on me.

Bruce Wayne, or Batman if you aren’t familiar, has suffered through an incredibly devastating series of losses, battles, and conflicts in The Dark Knight trilogy. Signature villains like Ra’s al Ghul and Scarecrow have birthed the Bat into the horrid streets of Gotham in Batman Begins. The Joker and Two-Face have pushed the Caped Crusader to his limits in The Dark Knight and in the epic conclusion to Nolan’s Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, Bane and Catwoman have proved to be Batman’s greatest adversary yet in physical battle, mental manipulation and intellectual competition.

If you have watched the movies, you NEED to agree with me on this before I go any further: the villains had better moments than Batman himself. Ra’s al Ghul was Liam Neeson. Enough said. Scarecrow was creepy. Joker was A LOT more memorable than Batman. Two-Face was excellent in character change. Catwoman was deceitfully charming and admit it: Bane was a complete boss.

Literally 88% of my interest in this trilogy were in the villains.

It isn’t just Batman’s villains that have temporarily destroyed him. Batman’s parents were killed right in front of him when he was a kid. At least Superman wasn’t there to experience Krypton blowing up. BRUCE WATCHED HIS PARENTS DIE!

Anyway, Bruce’s dearly beloved childhood friend, Rachel Dawes, was killed by The Joker in a maniac plan in The Dark Knight and in that same event birthed Two-Face, the monster that was once Harvey Dent. Talia, the daughter of Ra’s al Ghul, toyed with Bruce’s heart until she destroyed it. The city he protects is in constant suffering and has even denied the masked hero that has over-watched Gotham.

Yet there he is, charging into a new battle against his infamous adversaries, tackling the tough streets of Gotham like he was born to fight and he barely breaks a sweat.

You and I come from different books and our stories are never going to be the same. Your life could be a thousand times better or worse than mine but the reality is that you have a cave filled with bats: fears, losses, scars, aches. Each of those menacing bats is staring right back at you when you stare inside the cave, hoping that you’ll never get to embrace what is hidden inside that cave by stepping through. All of those painful memories, moments, they’re keeping you on the edge and you’re only left thinking about what you could be when you enter. The fact about the bats in your cave is that they’ll only go away when you confront them. So begins your journey inside the cave of suffering:

School problems like homework and friends? Take a break from difficult homework and try not to over-stress because that won’t do any good for you. Socialize with your other friends instead of your current list because too much of something isn’t the best option. If you’re struggling with an addiction to drugs, alcohol, or love someone who is addicted, visit a site like http://www.lastdoor.org/calgary-addiction-rehab-services/, talk to a counselor at school or your parents, someone that is going to offer you help.  Someone very special to me once told me that if you’re depressed, there’s no helping for anyone but to give you a reason to stay alive. So here’s my reason: take a read at my friend Richard’s post about depression by clicking https://youthareawesome.com/message-depression/, follow the links he’s given in his post and enjoy what he’s posted because I do believe that his post takes on a sensitive topic and delivers it excellently.

To the reader and my fellow YAA bloggers, I challenge you this week to step into your cave and free your bats. It can be something simple, such as overcoming your stress from school work by taking a break every now and then. If you’re an addict or you know someone who is, today is the first day of your new life. Take it and rebuild. And if you’re depressed, I know there is no easy way to deliver yourself from the state of mind that you’re in, so it’s ok to wait outside the cave. I’m not a hero, and I don’t expect myself to be because your story is your life, so once you’re ready, step inside. Rise.

What to do on public transit to avoid awkwardness

This is a short prose I wrote in response to the short story “Dressing Up for the Carnival” by Carol Shields.
I hope the same feelings can go around.

He Fakes Sleeping All the Time:
a Creative Response to Dressing Up for the Carnival by Carol Shields

It is quarter past four in a lazy afternoon, and a young man is sitting on a bus, curled up in his seat, looking sleepy. He is, indeed, not tired in the slightest; on the contrary, his mind at the moment pounces from seat to seat, curiously (wishing that he can be) inspecting his fellow passengers. He and his devious alertness anticipates the consequences of letting his eagerness take over: there will be the awkwardness of avoiding eye contact with the elderly ladies sitting across; there will be the boredom of constantly staring out the window into the eye-stabbing sunlight; and there will be the face-reddening jolt when caught sneaking a glance at the pretty auburn-hair two seats ahead. He concludes that the best course of action, though requiring certain self-restrain, is to look sleepy.

And hence he yawns (A lazy widening of the mouth to, first, an “Ah” then an “O”). He feels the warm moisture of a tear gathering mass at the squints of his eyes. Heavy are his eyelids. He closes them. He opens them really slowly. He shuts them again. The young man knows that the trick to looking convincing is to act with deliberate slowness, and not too forcefully.

He juggled his facial expression a tad more –for effect—before continuing.

The backpack becomes a teddy-bear on his lap. He clings onto it tightly with both arms, and he lets his chin rest gently atop. At this moment, the elderly ladies across from him see (instead of a stranger,) a harmless little boy tugged into bed with his little blanket.  In this instant, they are the parents who can finally – with sighs of relief – gossip about the neighbours (not too politely) when their child is absent. The young man smiles inwardly, not unlike a toddler who has caught a glimpse of where his parents is hiding the cookie jar.

Eyes closed, he listens in on the conversations that chance around him.

Occasionally – if he chooses—, his lashes would flutter. His lips would smack together lazily, seemingly burdened with the aftertaste of a slumber.  Lifting his leaden head, the young man would sluggishly pan his gaze from the leftmost to the rightmost of the bus interior. His complexion would be impassive but not without a hint of fatigue. He acknowledges solemnly the importance of not letting any of his real excitement show through his face. This demeanor, as goes to-plan, grants him undisturbed view of the surroundings. No doubt, people notices: the pair of chatting seniors steals a glance at him; the businessman in suits peeks up from his phone; the afro-head teenager (bobbing to her loud headphones) stares at him, shamelessly, until she becomes disinterested like the others. The young man’s blank, glazed expression comes across as unthreatening and quickly loses the attention of all the other passengers.

“Good acting,” he thought to himself mischievously. He made his eyelids heavy again, having satiated his curiosity for the duration between the last and the next bus-stop.

Celebrating a rainbow of Pixar

0

Who doesn’t adore Pixar movies? I, for one, have watched every Pixar film since Toy Story, and some of you might know that that means every single one of them.

Pixar is one of the most decorated computer animation companies of all time, with an impressive award count of 26 Academy Awards, five Golden Globes, and two Grammys. All of their fourteen feature-length films have been part of the top 50 highest-grossing films of all time, and for excellent reason; the quality of their movies, from stories to music to the impeccable animation of their lovable characters, is matched by few.

ROYGBIV, a gorgeous minute-long Pixar supercut made by Rishi Kaneria, celebrates the use of colour in Pixar films using cuts from each of the company’s fourteen films. It puts on display the vast range of colours Pixar has used over the years and examines the entire colour spectrum through the lens of Pixar movies. It’s a wonderful reminder of how important colour is in conveying emotion and mood, and won’t fail to bring a little Pixar nostalgia to your day.

Seeing the good of the early snowfall

0

Since winter decided to get a head start before fall came around, I’d figure it’d be slightly appropriate to try and bring out some good points of this premature snowfall. I hope that at least these few points can lighten up your Calgary weather experience. 🙂

Event of the year

What other city can say they got their first snowfall of the year in the second week of September? Or is that snowtember? Seems like thanks to this strange event, the #snowtember has been trending on twitter. Quite fitting, I must say. As the snow’s all gone and melted, and you’ve all posted various pictures of disbelief and sadness, this year’s first snowfall is going to become a fond memory. Or this year’s highlight, whether it was good or bad for you. It’s rare occurrences like this that make for a great story to tell all. It’s like a once in a lifetime thing really. And for some, the power outages and cancelled classes were just an added bonus. 😉

I'd have to agree on this one though.
I’d have to agree on this one though.

Snowmen (and various other snow creations)

tumblr_n5w1inrxaD1tymyz0o1_500

It doesn’t have to be a snowman… sorry, I went there. But in all seriousness, what else besides shoveling it is there to do with snow but make a snowman? Or snow fort. Or snow angel, monster, whatever you so desire. Release your inner child and create something amazing out of snow. It may not last long, but the feeling of accomplishment after and joy at your new snow creation was always something fun I loved. As an added bonus, you can even have a snowball fight if you want. Those are always fun.

Hot drinks galore-

Too cold outside for you? Head on to your local cafe or coffee shop, and treat yourself to a hot beverage. Relax a little and just watch the snow fall outside for a few moments. It may not be the appropriate time for it, but it is pretty stuff. The cold it creates gives you an excuse to stay indoors for the time being, anyway.

a-hot-drink-14

It’s SNOW!

What more can I say? It may be totally out of season, and about three months too early, but it’s still snow. Go outside in your snow gear (I’m serious) and have a little fun. After all, it won’t last long.

Thanks for reading this to the end, I hope I made your day just a bit brighter over this recent weather.

Higher Education #voiced

0

I wanted to write this blog simply to address the fact that numbers are defining who people are, and that being present in your community, in your home, school, and the world is something we seem to see less of nowadays. For a place where truly anyone is being oppressed, as well as where all are being threatened with oppression, it is inevitable that as long as the education system is actively contributing to this maintenance in which the world is actually riven by numbers, standardized tests, also the anxiety of slipping grades then there can never truly be any real talk of anyone being free from this stressful weight. Let alone educating “real” people of the world. I feel that I speak on behalf of many people who feel the same way as I; there is a need to show school systems which are an industry of social service, that are educating young minds, that there are ways in which students should be #voiced and integrated, in more ways than just clubs and teams.

Activism is something that we all can be a part of but sometimes we tend to tell ourselves that it probably won’t pay off. However, with activism, change cannot be guaranteed, but at least the amazing leadership/ownership experience can. In addition, we should not be memorizing paragraphs in our textbooks like it’s our religion. We can all recite Pythagorean theorem in our sleep, but what use is that? What are we being involved in, and are we being given full rights? Then question rises: can change the fate in our sporting events, exams etc. The truth is we can, and we don’t think about how great our voice actually is. Thus, this blog is up to inspire and replace thoughts of just going to school for the purpose of the degree etc. Try to make a big or small change in your higher education institute, or even high school.

The thing is, some education systems have students involved to voice other students’ opinions, and though it is a both good and bad thing. The whole student body should be involved in decisions. Instead of a student representative, students themselves should just simply be asked. These students were simply students without a title of “representative,” etc. But, since they strived for change, they received it. They knew they were a leader on the inside. Below I have listed some people who worked towards making a change in the higher education lives.

Annie Clark and Andrea Pino are students at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. What they did was initiate a great effort that would address a matter in regards to the sexual assaults in their own UNC campus. After they experienced insensitivity and lack of action from their school, it was decided that they should launch a great national movement. One of the results from this were that the U.S. Department of Education became involved more extensively when it came to campus oversight. In addition, they released 55 identities of schools that are under federal investigation.

A group of students that were at Stanford University, Fossil Free Stanford, decided to lead an effort that reached a climax regarding a decision by the university’s board of trustees. The decision was to divest the coal companies from the school’s endowment portfolio. Stanford’s portfolio of investments happens to be one of the largest ones in the country, and it was estimated to be $19 billion at a time. Since then, more than 400 higher education institutions have decided to invest in the fossil fuel industry.

Several initiatives have been actually been launched to bring change in how the NCAA, which is the governing body in relation to sports in college, does its business. One example would be where the Northwestern U football players filed a petition. They filed it to bring awareness to the fact that they should be classified as employees. They sent this petition to the National Labor Relations Board. Furthermore, they wanted lifetime medical/health insurance, and voice in athletic government. The petition was actually able to be affirmed by an initial ruling which was done by NRLB regional director, and now the matter happens to be under great review at the national level.

Again, the examples above shared a common theme: activists which are students are giving a kick to the higher education so that it would act more like a social institution, so that the right decisions are made for the people. However, isn’t that something that should be expected to be there rather than asked for? The answer to that is of course, but it is not truly happening as much as it should be. There seems to be narcissism in higher education with some institutions focusing on other things like grades rather than the students themselves. Lawrence Wittner even reported in the LA Progressive that in 15 years, American education has actually added 10x the amount of administrators rather than faculty members.

Thus due to this repetitive activist theme, hopefully you found the activist in you, and are inspired to be #voiced.
