3D Printing, Food?

0

Many of us have heard about the new phenomenon of 3D printing, which extends to plastics, guns, and even human organs. But NASA has taken the challenge and believes they can 3D print food. Not only do they believe they can reach their goal, but they believe they will be able to 3D print food in space. If you want to read the NASA article, click here.

A 3D Printer (http://www.makerbot.com/)
A 3D Printer
(http://www.makerbot.com/)

Essentially, this article covers the premise of how NASA has funded a company that is in the development phase of a project that would allow food that could be created through a 3D printer. This would allow for a larger variety of food, as well as more space on the spacecraft for other items. So far NASA has funded $125,000 towards this project, and since results are promising they may fund the second stage of a few hundred thousand dollars. NASA funded this project over other similar ones because this one utilizes food rheology and flavour expertise that is most likely required for a usable product system in space.

This newfound technology is important for a few reasons. First of all, NASA is pondering sending astronauts on long-term expeditions in the near future, and the current food support system doesn’t support the five-year shelf life needed to feed astronauts that would be sent to Mars. This new system in development will be able to feed astronauts on long-term missions. Furthermore, with this system there would be a larger variety of food, which would allow for better maintenance and health performance for astronauts. NASA has recognized that this development would act as a prerequisite for additive manufacturing in space for tools and even spacecraft.

Lots of experimentation and research was required to reach this point in the development. Currently they are only in the first stage, and still have to go through the second stage of research and development. Firstly, NASA issued a Small Business Innovation Research Phase 1 contract to Systems and Materials Research Consultancy of Austin, Texas to study the feasibility of this idea. After that they started conducting studies to understand the requirements for the final product, which took around six months. The technology that is being developed will come to complete fruition at the end of phase 2, and it could be a few years after that before it’s used in actual spacecraft.

The three primary applications of this technological advancement would be a larger variety of food in space, a longer shelf life and less use of space, and acting as a prerequisite for additive manufacturing of tools and other objects in space. Astronauts are in space for long periods of time, and having the same pre-packaged food gets boring. With this new system, astronauts would have a variety of food available to them, and thus have better health in space. In the near future, space missions would take a few years to far away places such as Mars, according to NASA, and the current food expires before that, and with 3D printed food it would last at least 5 years, according to the research and current development. Thirdly, this development would act as a subsequent prerequisite for additive manufacturing of tools and other objects. If food can be printed, then it begs the question of what else can be 3D printed. NASA believes that eventually, spacecraft parts and even spacecraft could be 3D printed.

This development is currently impacting society in a large way. While this 3D printer would be designed for more spacecraft, currently 3D printers exist, and everything from plastic toys to guns to human ears have been printed. 3D printers are even in household use, and a small 3D printer can be purchased for around $1200. This technology could be also applied in other aspects, such as helping feed people in poorer countries since it utilizes less space.

It’s about more than wearing pink

0

B-tXjM0UYAAWtrB.jpg-largeFor some people, Pink Shirt Day is a day of the year where everybody is supposed to wear pink. Simply that. Most people participating in Pink Shirt Day also know that the day is an anti-bullying event.

However, for too many, the topic of bullying isn’t just about a dress code for one day a year. For way too many people, especially youth, bullying is a weight on their back throughout the years. For way too many people, bullying feels like chronic torturing, both externally from others and from inside themselves.

We’ve all heard the childish saying “Sticks and stones will break my bones and words will never hurt me”. But guess what? Broken bones can be put into casts and soon they heal. Broken spirits? Now those aren’t so easy to fix.

I think sometimes we put bullying aside because our image of bullying is something along the lines of Mean Girls, a fist fight, or online stalking. The truth is, bullying doesn’t just show itself in those big, dramatic ways. Bullying can be the side comments you make. Bullying can be the insensitive jokes you think are funny. Bullying can be simply excluding someone. These (and other) more hidden forms of bullying can be difficult because the victim feels like they shouldn’t be upset and that there isn’t a problem and that they’re just “whining”.

To anyone out there who has been (or is being) bullied: you deserve love. You ARE loved. You are allowed to be struggling, and you are allowed to seek help.

To anyone out there who has been (or is) a bully: I’m sorry that you have to resort to those methods. I understand you might have underlying struggles that prompt your behaviour. But guess what? It’s time to seek an alternative. Talk to someone who can help. Fight with kindness. Not only will you make others happy, you’ll be happy yourself too.

Pink Shirt Day is a great initiative to gather support against bullying, but we can’t let it be about one day. I challenge you to go out of your way to be the light at the end of someone’s tunnel. To be the reason someone smiles that day. To be the reason someone doesn’t take their life that night. I challenge you to make the world a better, kinder, happier place.

Guilty pleasures

This week, I’ll be talking about guilty pleasures. We all have one, or in my case, a couple of them.
I will be talking about my absolute favorite guilty pleasures I have.

For one thing, lately I’ve been making great Oreo Milkshakes. For me I used no recipe! I’ve been doing it trial and error I have to say this is one of my big guilty pleasures lately. Just add about 6 big spoonfuls of Vanilla Ice Cream, 5 Oreos and a bit of milk (make sure there is not too much liquid) blend it in a blender and you have your Oreo Milkshake!

Every Tuesday night I watch my favorite shows, Pretty Little Liars and Dance Moms.
The shows are something I look forward to every week and they are huge guilty pleasures of mine! Also, I have been starting to watch Adventure Time as well! I am hooked!

What are your Guilty Pleasures? It could be Healthy Banana Cookies or even Banana Ice Cream!

You can never go wrong with Starbucks drinks, they are a plus!

A couple of my favorite drinks lately have been the Passion Tea Lemonade and of course the Caramel Frappé. Lately from Starbucks though, I’ve been really into the Mozzarella and Roasted Tomatoes! It is so amazing, warmed up and ready to go, your tastebuds will be dancing!

I don’t know where I would be without all of these.

I really have to say another guilty pleasure of mine would for sure be getting to come home after a long exhausting day and soaking in a hot bubble bath. I have lush bath bars that just smell so amazing! I always look forward to all of it, this makes me happy and relaxed!

Set in British Colonial India, “Man Equals Man” presents the forcible transformation of a civilian, Galy Gay, into the perfect soldier. Using Kiplingesque imagery, Brecht explores identity as something that can be dismantled and reassembled like a machine in a parable that the critic Walter Kerr credited with a “curious foreshadowing of the art of brainwashing.”

On repeat: ‘Swear To God The Devil Made Me Do It’ by The Front Bottoms

1

One of my favourite songs, from one of my favourite albums, from one of my favourite bands. It’s always periodically on repeat and will always be on my Top 25 Most Played. This is a great band and if you like this song you should definitely check out more of their stuff. A very popular song by these artists is called Twin Size Mattress. You may or may not have heard of it, but it’s likely that you’ve seen lyrics from the song in very “aesthetically minimalist” pictures on tumblr.

Like this one:

“Make sure you kiss your knuckles before you punch me in the face”

Or the more popular quote: “With tears in my eyes, I begged you to stay. You said, “Hey man, I love you but no f*****g way.“” A picture does not accompany this quote because I didn’t know if I could post it. I think you get the idea either way and it may also be accompanied by a rattling in your memory cage. This band’s sound has been described as folk punk (alright?), indie rock (yeah ok I get that one), and emo (hmmm… how about no) among other genres.

“To me, belonging is when one can comfortably and fully express their unique self without being judged. It’s about not having to worry if you’re ‘good enough’ to be with someone or a group of people. Belonging shouldn’t ask for change, but rather encourage a person to be who they are. You shouldn’t have to give up your own self-acceptance in order to belong.” ‪#‎LetsTalk‬

Graduation photo tips

0

Hi everyone! I don’t know if this is timely or not since everybody’s schedule is different, but I thought I’d offer up some tips for having a great grad photo (since mine looked pretty killer, if I do say so myself).

1. Makeup

Now considering all of the grad photos I’ve already seen, I think it’s safe to say that makeup and colour in general doesn’t quite show up as well on camera as it does in real life. Grad photos are your opportunity to go a bit bolder with your colour palette, or, if you want to keep it classy, a neutral palette with a few metallic tones is a great option for all skin tones. Generally speaking, there are three basic things that can always make you look like a better you: brows, lashes, and lips. You can get away with a lack of blush because these three things not only frame the face (the brows are especially important here), but give you a generally more awake look. Don’t forget that grad photos are flash photography, so going matte with your base makeup is always a great option to prevent a shiny t-zone in pictures. Michelle Phan has great tutorials, here and here.

2. Hair

When taking grad photos, you want to be conscious of the fact that you are wearing a graduation cap, so consider opting for hairstyles on the sleeker and slightly less voluminous side – otherwise hair can end up looking puffy under the cap. A sleek straight look or some soft waves are always great go-to’s. Don’t forget to tame those pesky flyaway hairs! My favourite way of doing this is applying hairspray to an (unused) toothbrush and gently combing it through to keep hairs down for a polished look.

3. Clothing

The gown is a v-neck, so on your picture day make sure you’re not wearing any high-neck shirts, otherwise it’ll end up showing through underneath your gown! But you can wear a great necklace, either a statement or a classic string of pearls.

4. Posing

You may or may not get a lot of freedom with this, depending on the photographer. A couple days before, feel free to test out a few angles. Just remember to stay relaxed! People can tell if a smile or pose looks forced or awkward, and the result is often less than great.

5. Don’t forget to smile!

Show off those beautiful teeth with a smile – again, make sure it isn’t forced. If it helps, think of a joke in your head that makes you laugh for that genuine, beautiful smile..

Good luck on your photos!

And because I’m a total narcissist, my own grad photo is the featured image. I look great okay?

Soundtracks to life

0

The majority of good music these days is heavily underrated, but with sites/apps like Songza and 8tracks, finding new music is at the touch of our fingertips. Movie soundtracks and scores are usually so fitting for the film, it’s as if there was never really any oth8651c2a9-a2f7-40f0-a9ce-eecd53ccea3eer reason this song was made, than for the film itself, (that’s exactly what a score is!)

I’ve recently watched two films and I absolutely fell in love with their soundtracks, Adult World (2013) and The First Time (2012). Both are rather quirky, romantic comedies and the music set to the scenes just make the moments being watched that much more sincere and memorable.

handsome-furs_capitol-hill-block-partyThe soundtrack for Adult World (2013) was mostly music from a band, who’s music I’d never heard before or even ever heard of the band itself before, called Handsome Furs. The film was strange, but an accurate depiction of the awkward feeling of lostness in the transition from childhood to adulthood. The unconventional film was complimented by the indie rock, post-punk revival genre that Handsome Furs strongly promoted and it suited the film to a t. Here’s a full list of the soundtrack, but my personal favourite was Hearts of Iron – Handsome Furs. It was mostly a mellow indie tune, with parts that picked up and could be considered post-punk. Overall, it’s a soft song that won’t put you to sleep and made more for hanging out.

??????????????????????????????The First Time (2012) had a whole other mix of songs from many different artists. The idea behind the film is “the first time”, really. It could be considered a becoming of age type of film, like truly being yourself and not doubting what you want, those kinds of things. The soundtrack felt genuinely soft, while also being a lift-your-mood-kind-of-lightheartedness. The soundtrack is casual and relaxing but overall gave the film, and the audience a happy stir of emotions; here is a full list of the soundtrack. I had heard some of these songs before, but the ones I kept on repeat for a few hours were, The End – Best Coast, Teenage Daydream – The Nights, and Coming Home – Pete Kilpatrick Band. IndBest-Coast-Carie and alternative music is growing incredibly popular these days, and these songs all fit sort of into the said genres. Indie and alternative music can be both relaxing and upbeat, they are the let loose and have fun kind of songs, and this whole film was surround by songs that advertise those kinds of emotions by the characters in the movie.

Next time you’re watching a movie, keep your ears peeled on why a scene feels so right, it’s probably the soundtrack/score, and it’s almost always, really good, underrated music.

Luxury and Green, Reality or Dream?

0

All of us know about Lamborghini. They create some of the most luxury cars in the world, but for a high price, starting at around $300,000, and the most expensive being the $5.3 million Lamborghini Veneno Roadster. Many environmentalists raise concerns about these gas-guzzling cars, and in retaliation Lamborghini has released the new Lamborghini Asterion LPI 910-4, the first hybrid made by Lamborghini. In an urban environment this car utilizes its PHEV (Plug-in Hyrbrid), which allows it to use electrical energy, and for long trips on the highway it can utilize a powerful aspirated engine. It releases 98g/km of CO2 emissions, which is around 3-4 times less than the rest of Lamborghinis cars.

The Lamborghini Asterion
The Lamborghini Asterion (image source/)

Not only is this car environmentally friendly, but it also looks good. This car takes a different approach in production than most of the sports cars. The comfort in this car is evident for many reasons, for example the seats being a little higher than the sporty counterparts. Furthermore, this car is more designed for the urban user that wants comfort and cheaper maintenance over the gas-guzzling counterparts.

Back in the 90s, many car companies, such as Volkswagen, Lamborghini, etc., bought out many electric company cars so that they could retain their business and prevent the development of environmentally friendly cars. One of the most leading, innovative brands in electric cars is Tesla, which has produced the Tesla Model S. This car runs on rechargeable electric power, releases no emission, and is very sleek and elegant. Furthermore, Tesla has revolutionized the industry and changed the mindset of the electric car industry. The owner, Elon Musk, got rid of the patents and made the technology public, because when he created Tesla he wanted to change the quota for cars to zero emission cars, and he feels that can best be achieved through everyone having access and being able to improve his technology.

The Tesla Model S

Overall, these two brands have propagated the idea that luxury cars can be both environmentally friendly as well as stylish. This has created a new trend in the car industry, and further research is being done to improve the environmental aspects of cars.

Calling pretentious movie addicts

0

Movies are probably the best thing. I’m ridiculously passionate about the emotions that films provoke. So… if I could get any more pretentious, I think it’s important that everyone experiences one film they will absolutely love with a burning desire. I’m appreciative of well crafted cinematography, so here are two newer movies that I believe out did themselves in a world of bad acting, mediocre effects and acceptable screenplays.

Gone Girl (2014)

When I finally got around to watching Gone Girl, (even if it was in the cheap theatres, it was definitely worth watching in theatres) I will tell you, I was not disappointed! This was one of those movies that make you question almost everything you think you know is going to happen, and then it does the complete opposite.

gone-girl-622x719In summary, Nick Dunne comes home on his five year anniversary to find his wife Amy, gone. His own inspection of the house has him concluding that she’s been kidnapped, and possibly murdered. As the police are drawn into the investigation, things begin not to add up and Nick is looking rather suspicious. Soon, the whole town and everyone who admires the beloved and novelty girl thats is “Amazing Amy” doubt every ounce of the marriage that Nick and Amy had behind closed doors. This is a psychological thriller that I believe, tops all psychological thrillers. The cast of this book turned movie is sublime. Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, and the lovely Neil Patrick Harris portray just how truly peculiar and manipulative people can be. I highly recommend this film because honestly, it was just really good. Go download, stream or rent it, because you need to watch it and the Rotten Tomatoes audience scored it at 4.2/5 stars!

wolfThe Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

Before this movie came out, I had no clue who Jordan Belfort was. Upon watching it, I can say it’s a bit much to take in, and the fact that it is rated R, kind of makes sense why. I watched interviews of Belfort and I vouch for Leonardo Dicaprio doing an impeccable rendition of Belfort’s personality.

The movie itself is based on the life Belfort lived in the 1990’s. He was an aspiring stockbroker who made his way as a “twisted Robin Hood who takes from the rich and gives to himself and his merry band of brokers.” It is graphic for all the melodramatic rowdiness that Belfort got himself into, but I think it was quite a good depiction. I vote to watch it for the love of movie’s based on true stories and the unbelievable truth that this movie was fact. Dicaprio voluntarily took the plunge into the roller coaster that was Belfort’s emotions and experiences through his consistent drug abuse and his incessant greed.

Both these films are two of the newer, better ones that I’ve seen. Nowadays, a lot of films will only have an effect after effect, an action shot after action shot or a bad joke following numerous other bad jokes, but they forget to include something that really makes the viewer think. Gone Girl (2014) made me question just what kinds of twisted people are out there, along with the humour and awkwardness some of the supporting characters offered, it made it an over all impeccable film. Whereas The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) had me obnoxiously laughing and in awe of how much havoc one man could do and cause, simultaneously. Both movies, in my opinion, were worth watching in theatres and re-watching in the comfort of our own homes.

The Misfortunate Third

0

With Valentine’s Day just past, there are probably a lot of couples around you. And they sometimes invite you to be the “third wheel” on a date. If you do the following 5 things, you can avoid being awkward or bored.

third-wheel

  1. Walk ahead of the couple.

Most of the time, you’ll end up behind the couple. This is a big no-no. Behind them, you can hear their intimate conversations oozing with love. You’ll also witness the PDA (Public Display of Affection), making everyone feel awkward. To avoid all this, walk ahead of the couple, but interact with them from time to time.

  1. Sit in the passenger seat.

If you can drive, offer to drive your couple friends. If not, sit in the passenger seat with the driver. This is similar to the case of walking. In the back alone, you’ll be watching the couple in their own little world. By sitting in the front alone, you’re giving your friends privacy while avoiding being awkward.

  1. Pay for the meal.

Surprise your friends by paying the bill before they get to it. Couples are always fighting over who’s going to pay. To avoid that and to keep your friends happy, you can spare some extra dollars for them.

  1. Engage in conversation with the couple.

If you sit there doing nothing, it’s going to be more awkward. Converse with the couple. They’ll appreciate that you participate and have fun with them more than wanting to get privacy. They did invite you, after all.

  1. Just don’t third wheel.

Honestly, having a third wheel is just awkward. Just don’t go if they invite you to a date.

“I believe good mental health is a key thing that allows people to be successful. Currently, there has been many discrepancies on how mental health should be handled. We have fairly good organizations and programs that can help people get through their adversities and help them manage their mental and emotional health, but there isn’t anything to really revolutionize that game field of mental health. Sure, many people can speak their mind but it’s quite difficult with the kind of society we are in today. For every supporter there is someone who judges. I want to see mental health be revolutionized where people are in a positive environment, and where they should not be afraid to speak their minds. So many people are silenced by their own thoughts in our society today. We live in an age with extremities on both confidence and insecurity. I envision a future where people are mentally healthy in a positive environment, where they aren’t afraid and silenced by their own thoughts.”‪#‎LetsTalk‬

A short story: Happily Ever After?

0

In English class, one of the themes we have been focusing on lately is the notion that people shouldn’t let fear run their lives because cowardice can be more dangerous than bravery. I believe that this is a very important thing to remember. The following is a story which I wrote that represents this theme:

**Disclaimer: This story does contain some sensitive topics such as illness, suicide and depression

Happily Ever After?

The soulful sound of a piano resonated in the still air, filling the space with its beauty and finesse. A girl danced across the floor, the coolness of the tiles chilled the soles of her bare feet, and traveled up into her body. As she spun, the puffy white dress she wore flowed around her like flower petals picking up in the wind. Each note of music evoked movement through her delicate body. She tiptoed on her feet while holding the edge of her skirt with her hand.

That carefree girl used to be me. That girl is dead now. I am no longer the same person. After all that happened to me, I feel weak, helpless and empty. My everyday life is now a struggle. I am pressed so hard against the earth by the weight of reality that some days, I wonder how I am still able to lift my feet to walk.  I wistfully wait for someone to wake me up and tell me that this has all been a nightmare.

A few months ago, while I was practicing my dance routine, I felt a deep and sharp ache in my head. I shook it off and continued my practice, thinking it was just a typical headache. Suddenly, I was lightheaded and I quickly fell to the polished dance floor. I could barely register what was happening around me. Little black dots swarmed my vision, and the corners of my sight slowly faded into black. The pain in my head was so sharp and excruciating that I didn’t even notice when I dropped to the ground. Everything blotted out and nothing mattered. I felt the world was crashing around me in slow motion. I tried to fight it, but it was too strong. I finally gave in, and let the darkness to take over.

I woke up to the beeping noises of the machines in a hospital room a few days later. I couldn’t manage to open my eyes yet. However, I could hear what was happening around me. My parents were talking with someone who turned out to be a brain specialist. The doctor was telling my parents that I had an inoperable tumour in my brain. He explained that all they could do for me at this point was to ease my pains and try to keep me as comfortable as possible. My father who was trying to keep his emotions in place, asked the doctor to be honest with them and let them know how long had I left. The doctor told him that unfortunately I had no more than a few months left. At this point, my mother lost her self control and started a gut wrenching sob.

Surprisingly, I felt detached and I didn’t know what to think of this news. Maybe, I deserved to die after what I did.

The air was stuffy and it smelt like disinfectants. The walls had been adorned by cheap prints of sceneries. I hated the atmosphere of the hospital; it reminded me of Scarlett. I tried to clear my thoughts, but I couldn’t. I just kept on thinking of how I ruined that poor girl’s life by my cowardice.

Scarlett was a simple looking but genuinely kind-hearted soul. When I transferred to Cambrian Heights High School, she befriended me. We soon became good friends. She was from a dysfunctional family and the school was a refuge for her. Her father was in jail and her mother was always out working two or three low paid jobs to support their family. She could not afford to wear fashionable clothes and in addition she was socially awkward. These had made her an easy target for the school bullies and they often made fun of her and played pranks on her.

Then one day, after seeing my dance in our school’s talent show, this group of popular girls noticed me for the first time. They complimented my dancing skills and were astonished why I was always with Scarlet. They called her a loser and told me that if I wanted to be included in their circle, I should drop Scarlett as my friend. I loved their attention and wanted to feel included and special. I told them that I was not her friend, I just felt sorry for her. I then went on and explained about her family’s situation. These revelations peaked their interest and they asked more questions. I was delighted to be the centre of interest of these popular girls and I continued divulging secrets that Scarlett had shared with me about her personal life. The next day, the entire school knew about Scarlett secrets. The school bullies used this information to tease her more. After Scarlett noticed that I have betrayed her trust, she stopped talking to me. Instead of apologizing and defending my friend, I joined the group of girls who made fun of her. I was now fully accepted in the circle of popular girls and I did not care about the pain I was causing to Scarlett. She had lost her final refuge, the school. After a little while, she couldn’t take it anymore. She went running out of the school sobbing. Later that night, she committed suicide.

After this incident, I could not forgive myself for what I did.  She didn’t deserve any of what happened to her. If I was not a coward and I stood up for her, she would still be alive. I betrayed my friend and I caused her to end her life. A moment of carelessness and subsequent cowardice in admitting my faults cost her life. I did not mean for all this to happen,  but I did nothing to prevent it either.

In these last days of my life, I sense a poetic justice in what happened to me. I have no desire to get better or fight my illness. I think I got what I deserved. It is true that a coward dies a thousand times before his death.
