Saving Money on your Internet Plan

A Guide for Canadian Youth

In our modern day lives, much of what we do is dependent on our internet access.  Whether we’re streaming our favourite shows on Netflix, chatting with our friends through an online service, or studying material posted by our teachers, we rely on our connection to the internet.  We use our devices so much that it seems like second nature.  As Youth, we often take our connection to the internet for granted and don’t think much about how much it is costing us.  However, as exam season comes to a close, and we look towards our future, we start to realize the responsibilities we will have.  In addition to paying taxes, paying rent, and managing our education, we will have the responsibility of managing our own internet plan.  You might be surprised by how expensive being connected to the internet can be.  For some of the most basic plans, the average user can be charged upwards of 100$ monthly by major Internet Service Providers (ISPs).  For Youth, who spend much more time on the web than other age groups, internet plans easily exceed 100$!   Adding that on top of one’s phone plan, and it’s easy to see how quickly the costs can rise.  It is quite common to see people spending thousands of their hard-earned Canadian dollars on an internet plan yearly.  Many people just accept that the internet is expensive and always will be.  They couldn’t be more wrong.

Here are some ways you can save money on your internet plan!

1. Negotiate with your ISP

An Internet Service Provider is a business.  A business wants to keep its customers.  So some good ol’ negotiating can help you save 5-15$ on your internet plan.  15$ may not sound like much, but over the course of a year, that 15$ you save monthly turns into 180$!  The downside to negotiating with your ISP is that it is quite a hassle.  Major Internet Service Providers are overloaded with customers, and often their customer support service is not the best.  It will take time and effort to negotiate for a discount.  However, if you’re locked into a contract, or don’t want to change internet plans, this might be the best way to go.  That being said, here are some tips on how you can negotiate with your ISP:

When negotiating with your Internet Service Provider, make sure to be patient, persistent, and courteous.  It may become very frustrating, but patience pays off, the longer you negotiate, the more likely they are to give you a discount.  Being courteous is also important.  At the end of the day, customer service representatives are people too.  If you nicely explain how you’d like a discount, they are more likely to offer one for you.

If asking for a discount does not work, another way to get a discount from your ISP is by threatening to move your business (but nicely).  Explain to them how their competitors have a much better price, and ask them to lower theirs.  Internet Service Providers often offer short term discounts of 5-15$ monthly as an incentive for their customers to stay with them.  You can take advantage of this.

The one big downside to taking this route is that it can become a huge hassle.  Furthermore, these short term discounts are not guaranteed.  So, if you’re looking for a longer term solution, this will not be the way to go.

2. Change your Internet Service Provider

If you’re tired of having to negotiate all the time to keep your prices the same, consider changing your ISP.  This is much easier than it sounds.  In 2015, the Canadian Radio Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) forced the major cable companies (like Bell, Shaw, etc.) to offer internet access to third-party resellers.  Because of this ruling, Canadians now have a wide variety of plans to choose from that are often much cheaper than those from the major ISPs.  The CRTC even has a helpful tool on their website that helps you find Internet Service Providers for your location.  It’s called “Service Providers Near Me” which can be found here.  It’s an easy tool to use.  Just type in your city, and it will show you all the service providers who provide service in that city.  This makes it extremely easy for you to compare and find the best service provider for you.

Here are some tips for comparing service providers:

  1. Many Internet Service Providers require their customers to buy the Modem and/or Router from them if they do not have one that is compatible with their network.  Make sure to check if the ISP you are considering requires such.
  2. Make sure to check the internet speeds that they are offering.  It’s important to note that Mbps/s is the standard metric used by ISPs to measure internet speeds.  Mbps/s is NOT Megabytes per second.  One Mbps is equal to 0.125 Megabytes per second.
  3. Check if the ISP you are considering has and Data Caps.  Most major ISPs have a cap, it can get extremely expensive if you accidentally go over.  Check how much they charge for overage.  Best case scenario, they don’t have a cap!  Even if you probably won’t go over your data limit, it can be stressful.
  4. READ REVIEWS.  This is extremely important.  Make sure you read reviews to make sure you aren’t signing up for a sub-par ISP.
  5. Don’t be afraid to talk to their sales representatives.  Any unanswered questions about installation, internet speeds, prices, anything, they will tell you.  Don’t be afraid to talk to them!

Conclusion

The task of managing your internet service may look daunting.  But I promise it is not.  Canadian youth do not learn how to find and manage their internet service in school even though it is a vital part of Canadian life.  Hopefully, this has helped shine some light into the unknown as well as help save you some money.

The new Calgary Public Library is awesome! There really isn’t another way to put it. The recently opened Central Library is the execution of mastery in many respective fields, which all come together to offer a fantastic environment for reading, studying or meeting with your friends for a cup of coffee on the weekend. Here are some awesome photos I took of the library when I visited it this weekend! (I also included some photos of the St. Louis Hotel because I thought they looked really cool!)

Two Ways of Seeing a River

0
  1. American novelists and humourist Mark Twain wrote an autobiography called “Life on the Mississippi”. “Two Ways of Seeing a River is an excerpt from this book, and is Twain’s account of learning to be a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River. He delves into the changes in attitude he experiences concerning the river after becoming a steamboat pilot. Essentially, once he gains knowledge and life experiences, he begins to take the beauty of the river for granted and loses his love of it. Mark Twain explains how something beautiful can turn bland or even ugly after seeing it numerous times, from a different perspective, or after gaining new knowledge and experiences.

“Two Ways of Seeing a River”

Mark Twain

Now when I had mastered the language of this water and had come to know every trifling feature that bordered the great river as familiarly as I knew the letters of the alphabet, I had made a valuable acquisition. But I had lost something, too. I had lost something which could never be restored to me while I lived. All the grace, the beauty, the poetry had gone out of the majestic river! I still keep in mind a certain wonderful sunset which I witnessed when steamboating was new to me. A broad expanse of the river was turned to blood; in the middle distance the red hue brightened into gold, through which a solitary log came floating, black and conspicuous; in one place a long, slanting mark lay sparkling upon the water; in another the surface was broken by boiling, tumbling rings, that were as many-tinted as an opal; where the ruddy flush was faintest, was a smooth spot that was covered with graceful circles and radiating lines, ever so delicately traced; the shore on our left was densely wooded, and the sombre shadow that fell from this forest was broken in one place by a long, ruffled trail that shone like silver; and high above the forest wall a clean-stemmed dead tree waved a single leafy bough that glowed like a flame in the unobstructed splendor that was flowing from the sun.

There were graceful curves, reflected images, woody heights, soft distances; and over the whole scene, far and near, the dissolving lights drifted steadily, enriching it, every passing moment, with new marvels of coloring.

I stood like one bewitched. I drank it in, in a speechless rapture. The world was new to me, and I had never seen anything like this at home. But as I have said, a day came when I began to cease from noting the glories and the charms which the moon and the sun and the twilight wrought upon the river’s face; another day came when I ceased altogether to note them. Then, if that sunset scene had been repeated, I should have looked upon it without rapture, and should have commented upon it, inwardly, in this fashion: “This sun means that we are going to have wind to-morrow; that floating log means that the river is rising, small thanks to it; that slanting mark on the water refers to a bluff reef which is going to kill somebody’s steamboat one of these nights, if it keeps on stretching out like that; those tumbling ‘boils’ show a dissolving bar and a changing channel there; the lines and circles in the slick water over yonder are a warning that that troublesome place is shoaling up dangerously; that silver streak in the shadow of the forest is the ‘break’ from a new snag, and he has located himself in the very best place he could have found to fish for steamboats; that tall dead tree, with a single living branch, is not going to last long, and then how is a body ever going to get through this blind place at night without the friendly old landmark?”

No, the romance and the beauty were all gone from the river. All the value any feature of it had for me now was the amount of usefulness it could furnish toward compassing the safe piloting of a steamboat. Since those days, I have pitied doctors from my heart. What does the lovely flush in a beauty’s cheek mean to a doctor but a “break” that ripples above some deadly disease? Are not all her visible charms sown thick with what are to him the signs and symbols of hidden decay? Does he ever see her beauty at all, or doesn’t he simply view her professionally, and comment upon her unwholesome condition all to himself? And doesn’t he sometimes wonder whether he has gained most or lost most by learning his trade?

The structure of this excerpt is divided into three main ideas: Mark Twain’s initial love of the river, his gradual decline in attention for it, and finally, an inquisition if losing sight of beauty to gain something else is worth it. The first paragraph consists of mainly vivid imagery of the Mississippi River that Mark Twain describes. Twain, with this paragraph, is conveying the fact that a knowledge of the inner-workings of a river and what the features of a river indicate do not heighten the experience of it. In fact, getting to know something too well can make one lose attraction of it, and this is what happened to Twain. In the first sentence, when he says, “…I had mastered the language of this water,” he means that he was well-trained as a steamboat pilot. He describes this acquisition as valuable; however, he also blames it as the cause for him to lose “all the grace, all the beauty” from the river. In the second paragraph, Twain describes the gradual decline in attraction and attention to the river and its surroundings. He notices things not so he can marvel at them, but to use them, such as when he takes the image of a sunset and notes that it means “we are going to have wind tomorrow”. Twain then brings all the vivid details of the river from the first paragraph and introduces them again into the second, but this time, he describes how they indicate something other than beauty to him. This shows that knowledge and experience did, indeed, cause Twain to disregard the awe and magnificence that he saw in the river before. It can be seen that distance creates beauty, when in the first paragraph, “steamboating was new to me [Twain],” he was not acquitted with the workings of the river, and therefore he was more ‘distant’ from it, which created his attraction for it. In fact, he is aware of this, because in the third paragraph, he “pities doctors from my [Twain] heart.” He rhetorically questions whether or not a doctor can see the difference in the beauty of a flush of a woman’s cheeks and a disease. The main question he asks is whether or not gaining knowledge and experience of something worth is losing that initial perspective. More or less, Mark Twain is addressing himself, and possibly making the world aware of the merits to what they are trying to achieve.

In the last paragraph, Twain provides interrogative sentences that invite readers to consider doubt or judgment on their own actions. Twain is referencing doctors in the paragraph; however, in reality, he is addressing himself and the world. One thing to note is that Twain always brings ideas from the last paragraph into the beginning of every new paragraph. This juxtaposition is to enhance his point from the last paragraph and contrast it with what he is going to say next. In the second paragraph, he contrasts his love of the river with the reality of it. In the third paragraph, he contrasts the loss of the “romance and the beauty” of the river with the question if it is worth losing that perspective for something else, such as knowledge. He is trying to make sense of the significance of gaining experience if in the end, it takes away the perception of beauty and love, and if one “has gained most or lost most by learning his trade.”

Overall, in “Two Ways of Seeing a River”, Mark Twain addresses the importance of understanding the extent of the merits of what people have. He questions whether experience and knowledge is more rewarding than the vivid perception of things and the ability to see meaning beyond their surface. Twain emphasizes how he went from a state of mesmerisation to nonchalance in regards to the Mississippi River, all because of his acquisition of experience and knowledge as a steamboat pilot, which he views as valuable but not worth the loss of his romantic and poetic perception of the river.

Norvina Eyeshadow Palette Review

Image result for norvina

You’d probably be surprised about how obsessive I am over makeup. I am – very into it. I usually do not wear makeup but, that is because I’m lazy and do not have time for it. I know there are people out there who are motivated to get out of bed in the morning to do their makeup and look fabulous. However, when it comes to me I do not care if I look like a hag, I am going to continue sleeping. On the occasions, I have time to do my makeup, I go all out on my look especially, the eyeshadow bit. I believe that a person’s eyeshadow look gives them the power to express themselves while also pulling their look together. That’s why I feel that spending a lot of money on an eyeshadow palette is worth it. If I were to recommend a palette for you to buy, it would be Norvina by Anastasia Beverly Hills.

Norvina. This palette has a beautiful name and colour scheme. I feel that it has a perfect balance of glitter and matte shadows. With the colours in the palette, you can create both smokey eyes or natural looks. I really love the purple and pink tones because can combine them for a nice romantic look. The shadows are also very pigmented, even the sparkly ones. Although, the glitter shadows can be more intensified if you wet your brush with either water or setting spray. From experience, the eyeshadow lasted about 6 hours without eyelid primer before I needed to reapply it. In comparison to other glittery eyeshadows, the ones in this palette have very little fall-out. The brush that comes with the palette is pretty basic. You can choose to use it or not but, I do say that it isn’t that bad of a brush. One thing that I do dislike about this palette is that not all of the shadows that appear to be matte or actually matte. Base, Soul, and Love appear to be matte, in reality, they have some shimmer to them. I wish that they were matte although, that is my own preference. Lastly, the cost of the pallet was around $60 (Canadian) when I bought it. For some, this may seem way too expensive. I thought so too, then I decided to spend my money on it. Now, I do not regret buying this palette, I have fallen in love with it. Norvina is totally worth its price and I bet that if you get it you will enjoy it just as much as I do.

Winter Night

The moon looks over the white scene, its light reflecting off the soft snow. The grassy hill glows gently, each leaf and twig blanketed in frost. No wind, not even a whisper. The world is silent, muffled by the powdered cover, stilled by the cold.

A lone hare huddles by a bush, ever observant. Its nose twitches, and it shifts forward, stretching out long hind legs. It rises and hops away. The towering spruces are regal in their platinum crowns and shawls of silver. Their stature alone is impressive. They are the monarchs of the forest, quietly reminding of their rule through this display of grandeur.

The sky, deepest of indigos, is an infinite canvas for the gleaming stars. Distant, oh so distant they are. On route for millions of years, their light still travels through space to reach the earth, where it falls faintly through tired eyes and makes an impression on wandering minds. The constellations tell stories, but there is so much more to be said. The tales fill holes in the unknown, but the mysteries are abundant. The more time spent looking up, the more stars are revealed as they shyly make themselves seen from out of the dark curtain. Some things are only noticed when time is spent searching.

A new creative outlet

0

I’ve never been the kind of person who does new years resolutions, they aren’t really my thing and from what I’ve noticed, they usually aren’t fulfilled. But for my birthday this year (which wasn’t long after new years), I got a journal. I’ve had little journals and notebooks for years, but I’ve never done much with them, and this one was so cute and lovely that I had to use it somehow. So, I’ve decided, as a little bit of a new years resolution, I’m going to try bullet journaling.

For those who don’t know what bullet journaling is, it’s basically an analog system that’s meant to keep you organized. You write down ideas that you might have, monthly goals, weekly events, places you’ve been/want to go, the list goes on.

I’ve seen people do bullet journaling for years, and it’s something I’ve always been interested in, I just never got around to starting one. I’m hoping this can be a new sort of way to get myself motivated.

I’m hoping that bullet journaling can become a new creative outlet for me. I’ve really enjoyed doing it recently. I’ve used it to track my water intake and sleep, weekly goals, monthly plans. I’m really hoping it’s something I can continue because honestly, it’s loads of fun.

Netflix Is Taking Over The Anime Industry

0

Netflix is an American media services provider that has a high number of users. Having several different movies and t.v shows in several different languages it wasn’t a surprise when Netflix slowly started adding more and more animes as well.

Netflix started to add in mainstream animes such as Naruto, Bleach, Fairy tail, Fullmetal Alchemist, Attack On Titan, etc. Even though they have added these, the issue is that the seasons are not complete so several episodes are missing. Looking past that, Netflix even started to add animes that were not mainstream like Ouran High School Host Club, Inuyasha, Your lie in April, Rurouni Kenshin and more. Unlike the mainstream animes that came incomplete, these ones were not.

After this the streaming service started creating their own animes called Netflix Original. By doing this they started to create animes like Kakegurui, the Magi series, Violet Evergarden and Little Witch Academia. By doing this, Netflix has increased their anime viewers greatly.

They did produce a few live actions such as Death Note, Bleach and Erased.  The Death Note live action was the most speculated live action out of all of them and the movie had several Youtubers comment on it. The movie was based of the manga but it really only kept the first names and occupations of the characters. The response was not great and several issues were brought up like how the characters personalities were switched or how the ending was different.

Japan’s animation studios have several animes to create and with Netflix’s participation it has increased viewers, competition and its worldwide platform. Crunchyroll is a video streaming provider that focuses on anime and its new competitor is Netflix. It is said that Crunchyroll plans on producing their own anime like Netflix but nothing has been decided yet.

With Netflix getting more animes each month it will be no surprise if the platform gets some classic animes like Cowboy Bebop and Sailor Moon. Netflix even released that they are planning on adding the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion including its first movie.

Netflix is taking over  and it is going to impact several studios in Japan. Whether they partner with Netflix to produce and create new animes or work by themselves, Netflix is making its way into the industry.

The Evening Sky

The Evening Sky

Often the dark sky sparkles dots of light,

Shimmering miles away they burn strong.

One feels satisfaction from such a sight,

And knows their glow will last forever long.

With every three-fourths of a hundred years,

A blazing streak illuminates the shade.

An experience that presents no fears,

One moment that will last and never fade.

Yet just like the glittering dotted sky,

And the very rare shooting night sky jewel,

Your nature does not allow me to cry,

And your sweet love is never displayed cruel.

For you have a dazzling night gem soul,

Like the twinkling dusk, you make me whole.

Seven Writing Prompts to Get Rid of Writer’s Block

0

Many of us want to become better writers, and the first step in doing so is to practice writing! In fact, Malcolm Gladwell, a Canadian journalist, claims that to perfect a task, you need 10,000 hours practice. However, it can be hard to figure out what to write about, and I know that writer’s block can be a pain. This is why I came up with seven writing prompts that will hopefully help.

Some prompts are inspired by others stories and such, but for the most part they are original.

One: They say that when there’s no one in the homes, someone on the streets comes in and passes through all of them. But when no one can be seen on the streets either, then the evidence of someone in the homes becomes more obvious. Usually there is a least one person who is always in their house, and that is you. But even you cannot resist the New Year’s fireworks. You leave your house along with everyone else on your street that night. But the last midnight of the year was a dire one. You are going home at three am on January 1, right after the party ended, and most people are passing out drunk on the streets on in their homes. However, you are sober enough to realize something different about your home. For one, you can sense your reflection looking at you when you are turned around.

Two: You are locked in a room with six different other people. You have all been accused of the same murder, and the seven of you all deny committing the crime. However, you know you are lying when you deny the crime because you did it, but the guy beside you becomes friends with you and eventually admits to you only that he is the murderer.

Three: Your best friend is facing a mental illness and you convince her to see a therapist. There are some days where she does not notice you being with her, and it seems a lot of the times she is ignoring you. You worry that this may be because of her illness, so they days when she talks to you are the days you spend convincing her to see a therapist. When your friend finally agrees, you happily notice her slowly healing. However, you soon realize that all along, you were her imaginary friend.

Four: You have the ability to smell a lie. Often, you say something you are unsure of just to see whether it is the truth or not. Test papers have become a walk in the park, and you can immediately tell if someone is lying to you. It was all fun and games until you said heard something you shouldn’t have, and you almost faint from the foul smell that came from it.

Five: In an alternate universe, a number is tattooed on every person’s wrist for identification rather than using a name. Being a tattooist, removing your tattoo, or changing your tattoo is illegal. However, one day you wake up and the number on your wrist is different. The same thing happens for the following days, and you run the risk of getting caught with a different number. Today is the day of finals, and the number on your wrist is always used for identification.

Six: You always jaywalk. Even if the traffic light is red and you can walk on the crossroad, you jaywalk just for the sake of it. One day, on the news, the reporter says that there is a new annual day that is opposite of the Purge, a day where every crime, even minor ones such as jaywalking, are punishable by death sentence. You don’t hear when the day is, and unbeknownst to you, that day is tomorrow.

Seven: A car has been tailing yours for the past ten minutes. You are on a common road used by many at this hour, so you don’t dwell on it. However, when you turn into your driveway, the car is still tailing you. That is when you slow down, and instead of stopping at your house, you drive further on. You look in your rear-view mirror, and to your surprise, the car parks in front of your house and someone gets out. The weird thing is, that person looks exactly like you from five years ago.

Avenger’s Endgame Trailer – Easter Eggs!!!

The movie we have all been waiting for. After the sudden ending of Infinity Wars, we are all left wondering the same thing. What does the Avengers 4 (Endgame) trailer mean? (Spoilers in the trailer if you haven’t watched Infinity Wars – Avengers 3). I will go through the most important Easter eggs and special scenes that play a role in the upcoming movie.

Full Trailer

The Benatar

As the trailer starts (0:13 to 0:23) it is unfamiliar to few where Iron Man (Tony Stark) is. But as the photo zooms out, it all becomes clear. It is seen as Tony is stuck on the ship in the depths of space, and the shape gives out the Benatar. To the people who don’t know, the Benatar is the ship of the Guardians of the Galaxy’s took to get to Titan. In the well known previous movie Infinity Wars, Tony had landed on Titan (Thanos’s Home Planet), and so did the Benatar with the rest of the Guardians. As we see Tony in space we wonder how he appears in the middle of nowhere, then it soon becomes clear that he probably fled the planet with Rocket and the remaining heroes that survived.

Not the Milano!

Though many would believe this is the Milano (Guardians of the Galaxy’s Original Ship), it is due to the fact that the Milano was destroyed in the first Movie of Guardians of the Galaxy. As well as the difference in the shape between the two ships.

Nebula!

Some crucial evidence that the rest of the heroes that fought Thanos on Titan (Thanos’s Home Planet) were on the ship is from Nebula making an a short appearance on the trailer (1:25-1:26). For those who don’t know who Nebula is, she is the sister of Gamora, who we all know is part of the Guardians.

Outside World Impact

The pictures above show the difference between the Avenger Bases, from the before (Spiderman Homecoming) to the after (Avengers Endgame Trailer). At first, it doesn’t seem like Thanos has done a lot but as we look at the trees in both the pictures, the damage seems significant. From the colorful trees to the barely alive shrubs. (1:10 – 1:11)

Ronin?

You may be wondering who Hawkeye has become? Ronin is the name Hawkeye goes by as a name when he is going behind the law. In my belief, Clint Barton (Hawkeye) becomes this certain part of himself because of Thanos. After Thanos snapped his fingers and wiped out half the universe, this might mean he turned Clint’s family into dust. Marvel Entertainment is trying to emphasize this by having Captain America (Steve Rogers) say “We lost a part of ourselves”. (1:33 – 1:36)

Are They Really Dead?

Most people will see the Avengers Endgame title (1:49-1:55) being formed by dust as a cool way of introducing it, but there is more than meets the eye. At first, you don’t think about the previous part of the trailer as you watch it. But if you look at the start of the film the Marvel Entertainment (1:46 -1:02) fades to dust, which symbolizes the heroes and the people who died. Later the Avengers 4 Title appears from that same dust, this makes me think, are we gonna see the loving heroes who died in Infinity Wars in Endgame?

When you first looked at the trailer, did you see all the Easter Eggs I saw? Some are easy to see but some are harder.

Rally Pointe – One of the Best Volleyball Facilities in Calgary

I may be a little biased because I am a part of their club team, Canada West, but Rally Pointe is one of the best facilities for volleyball in Calgary. It is located in southeast Calgary and was established in 1999 by a group of seasoned Canadian volleyball players. They offer eight indoor courts as well as six outdoor beach courts.

In addition, Rally Pointe has adult leagues for people who want to play competitively. If you want to play casually with your friends, every Friday there is Drop In. During the summer or spring, there are camps to help you improve your skills.

Rally Pointe is the home of Canada West and 403 Selects. As mentioned above, I am a part of Canada West. 403 Selects is a competitive girl’s only Club that goes from 13U all the way up to 18U. Canada West has boy and girl teams from 13U up to 18U as well. They also have elite coaches that have been on the Team Canada, and some have even taken part in the Olympics.

The complex also has a shop that sells all sorts of volleyball gear such as shoes, kneepads, spandex, or volleyballs. They can also pump your ball for free.

To conclude, Rally Pointe is the volleyball facility for you whether you’re just starting to play or you’re a professional.

What’s At Stake?

0

Starting at Banker’s Hall at noon, Calgarians will side by side make their way to the municipal building where the official rally will be held.

What is it all About?

The Women’s Marches began all over the world in 2017 to not only harness the power of female led movements but also as a grassroots initiative giving citizens the opportunity to advocate for  a wide range of issues including racial and economic justice. This year the Calgary chapter of the March is bringing people of all genders, ages, backgrounds, affiliations, and beliefs together to ask, what is at stake? We are living at a complicated time; in a world of increasing fragmentation and hatred, in an era where online movements such as #MeToo and #TimesUp are filling our social media feeds, and in a city that will go through both a provincial and federal election in the next year. We all have a part to play in ensuring that our city and our country continue to be places of acceptance and harmony.

Topics for this Year’s March: What’s At stake?

An important part of  moving forward together is bringing awareness and stirring discussion about the issues that affect us all. The following topics will be expanded on at this year’s march:

  1. Domestic Violence – Did you know in Calgary, police receive more than 18,000 domestic conflict calls per year and one in five of them involve some sort of physical violence?
  2. Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women – Did you know there are currently 272 documented cases of missing and murdered Indigenous women right here in our province?
  3. Democracy & Getting Politically Involved – Did you know that the Canadian Parliament is composed of only 26% women putting us behind Burundi, Cuba, Afghanistan and Kazakhstan, just to name a few?

Leading Up to the March:

There are three things you can do to get ready for the March on January 19th.

  1. Film a short video! Explain what is at stake for you and your community this coming year. Why do you March? Make sure to tag your video with @wmwyyc on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to be featured.
  2. Donate to the #WeforSheYYC impact fund! Something that will set YYC apart this year is the Impact Fund facilitated by United Way which will raise money for women serving programs right here in Calgary. 100% of the profits received will be split among organizations such as the Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association, the Elizabeth Fry Society, and many more. The fund will be open from now until International Women’s Day on March 8th. Click here to donate.
  3. Commit to coming to the March..and bringing a friend! After all 80% of success is showing up.

At the March:

There is no doubt, many will leave inspired to action, and ready to create change, but then what?

  1. Pledge to Vote! With two high stake elections coming up, the best way to make sure your voice is heard is to get to the polling stations. Whatever your opinion may be, it’s not only a right but also a responsibility to mark that ballot.
  2. Ask Others to Vote! Tell everyone in your circles to get out there and vote as well. The Women’s March is all about creating small positive changes starting with everyday people like yourselves.
  3. Ask Political Leaders! Making sure you are an educated voter is just as important. Check out the platforms of your potential leaders on women and human rights issues or anything else that impacts you.

Looking for Tangible Ways to Participate?

On Thursday, January 17th at 6pm, the Women’s Centre for Calgary will also be hosting a sign making event. And, if you are looking for someone to walk with, community members of all genders are invited to meet at the Women’s Centre at 11:15am, on the day of, before the March.

My Thoughts On School

This blog is about me sharing MY thoughts on school. Not everyone might agree, that’s why it’s MY thoughts. Thank you!

A) School is confusing- Okay, school is confusing because when I’m out of school, I wanna be in school. Then when I’m in school, I wanna be out of school! Here’s a message to school: “Can you just be wonderful or awful? You can’t  be in between. Just choose one, so that I can make up my mind. Thanks :)”

B) Is school really a safe place? – I don’t know. I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure most of us have done this. Have you    ever not made eye-contact with the teacher because you don’t want to be called upon? I assume your answer is ‘yes.’    Have you ever struggled to raise your hand because of the fear of being wrong or laughed at? I believe your answer is ‘yes’ again.

C) Homework- I don’t see a problem with homework. I do see a problem with the amount given though. I’ve traveled a lot, that means various and different amounts of homework. Many of you don’t know that I lived in the Caribbean. The amount of work given to take home was ridiculous. I would start at 4:00 pm and I would finish around 8:30 pm. It was so much that it gave me a headache, and truly stressed me out. It wasn’t hard, it was the amount.

D) Options- Options is a class, it is an extra-curricular activity. At my school we have many kinds of options, we have Cooking, Construction, Volleyball, Band/Music, Power Up, French, Art etc. I love options. I like that we are balancing the work and everyday needs.

E) Stress- I don’t get stressed anymore. I think to avoid stress you need to manage your time and understand the subject. If you don’t understand something, go ask. Don’t be afraid. To learn you have to understand. If you don’t    then you aren’t learning anything. Have a schedule and stick to it, especially if you can’t manage your time wisely.

F) Teachers- If you are a teacher and you are reading this…hi. I think in order to have a great school experience, I think you need to respect your teachers, and they need to respect you. Of course, not all teachers are respectful and amazing. If they aren’t very nice to you, try being nice to them and see if that changes anything. If not, tell someone.

G) The End- This is “The End” of my blog. Thank you for reading. I hope you use some of my tips or/and enjoyed.  Thank You!

YAA Holiday Countdown 2018 : Growing up with Eid

0

Before Christmas, there was Eid. That’s not to say I don’t celebrate eid anymore, now that I live in Canada, it’s just that you don’t get to have the same connection to the holiday when everyone surrounded by you doesn’t know about Eid and is too busy thinking about Christmas every year. I do love Christmas. I love any holiday that brings people together, with hugs, dinner parties, presents and ugly sweaters.

Though we have two different Celebrations of Eid, Eid-ul-Fitr is the more festive one. Eid is about being thankful for all that you have, as it starts at the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting for Muslims. The whole point of the fasting is to have empathy for those who don’t have much and learn to be more patient and persistent. So then when we’re celebrating Eid-ul-.fitr, with our new clothes and jewelry, and having a blast with family and friends, we have a new sense of gratefulness every time. In the country I’m from, Pakistan, this Eid is usually called “meethi Eid,” meaning “sweet Eid.”

I grew up in a small city in Sindh called Hyderabad, the “Lion City.” I remember the nights just before the big day. The city bazaars lit up at night, bustling with families trying to buy as many clothes and jewelry for themselves, their own children and their little nieces and nephews. In Pakistan, most shops don’t close until eleven, one of the things I really miss.

The day of Eid is determined by the moon. The celebrations begin only after the sighting of a new crescent moon in the evening sky

ushering in the next month after Ramadan.

Then, of course, who could forget the Eid prayer that is done with the new clothes we wear. After the prayer is finished, we would all hug each other and wish an Eid Mubarak to everyone.

Later the festivities would begin. There would be people’s houses just crowded with family and Friends and little kids running around crazy (and breaking things) to talk and eat scrumptious food. A lot of times me and my friends would just meet up at one of our houses, all dressed up to eat and talk and laugh about things. We would also exchange Eid greeting cards as well.

If you were lucky, and if your relatives and friend’s parents thought you were cute enough and deserving, you would get a gift in the form of cash called an“Eidi.” Otherwise,  as you grow older, you’ll notice you’re getting way less of that Eidi.

After growing up with Eid, and celebrating Christmas with friends now here in Canada, all of this makes me realize now that though Eid is much distinct from Christmas, it still maintains the same human principles. Both celebrations bring us together. Both are festive and full of cheer. Last but not least, both show that no matter how different we are, we all strive for togetherness, love, and peace upon ourselves and everyone else.
