The Business of Scientific Publishing

0

Scientific publishing is a hugely profitable business regardless of its narrow audience, weighing somewhere around the size of the film industry. In order to make money as a traditional publisher, not necessarily scientific, a multitude of costs must be covered. These costs range from paying writers, employing editors to commission, shape, and check the articles, as well as paying to distribute the finished product. Typically, successful magazine publishers of this sort make profits of around 12-15%.

For scientific publishing, the way to make money would in theory seem very similar. However, in reality, scientific publishers duck most of the actual costs. Scientists research and create work under their own direction, funded usually by the government. The work is given to publishers for free, where they are then given to scientific editors to check whether or not it is worth publishing for a price. The catch is that the actual bulk of the editorial burden and the assurance of scientific validity, a process known as peer review, is done by scientists on a volunteer basis. The publishers then sell the product back to the government-funded institutions to be read by scientists, who, in a collective sense, created the product to begin with.

Scientists are aware of the bad deal they’re playing with. Why should an industry receive its raw materials from its customers, use those customers to check quality control, and then sell the product back to the customers at an inflated price? Many scientists also believe that the publishing industry is able to exert unnecessary influence over what scientists choose to study, which ultimately hurts the field of science in the end. After all, they are a business, and scientists themselves, knowing what kind of work would get published, align their work accordingly. This is turn defeats the purpose of scientific thought and allows for the control of demand for certain ideas in a place where pure creativity and innovation should prevail instead.

Since the early 2000’s, scientists have theorized an alternative called “open access”. This removes the problem of balancing commercial and scientific imperatives by simply eliminating the commercial element. In practice, this idea takes the form of online journals, where scientists pay for editing but the work is available for everyone. However, despite the funding from some of the biggest agencies in the world, including the Gates Foundation, only about a quarter of scientific papers are readily available. The question that arises is the extent to which scientific advancements are hindered from the privatization of science itself. How much potential is lost when business is incorporated into science as a study?

EPICENTER Major, Teams to Watch

0

Forward Gaming

Region: North America
Closed Qualifier Result: 7W-0L

Forward Gaming, the new kids on the block. They haven’t made much of a splash as of yet, but perhaps that will change with the EPICENTER Major. They’ve struggled to break the top 8 at minor tournaments, struggling to break top 10 at majors, sometimes even failing to qualify. However, recently they have acquired CCnC, Sneyking, and Pieliedie, very skilled veteran players. These veterans have completely changed the face of this team, they have become real contenders. This was shown in the North American Closed Qualifiers for the EPICENTER Major. Forward Gaming beat out Evil Geniuses, the North American powerhouse, and 6 other teams to finish 7 wins to 0 losses, qualifying for the major straight from the group stage. Forward Gaming could be the next North American powerhouse in Dota 2.

OG

Region: Europe
Closed Qualifier Result: 5W-2L, 1W-2L vs Liquid, 2W-0L vs NiP,
2W-1L vs Alliance

OG, the reigning TI champions. Ever since winning TI, they have not been finding much success, even failing to qualify for multiple major tournaments. Because of this under-performance, they have been the butt of a very funny but unfortunate joke”OG fluked TI”, referring to how they won TI, but now seem like they can’t win anything. Much of this could be blamed on the roster issues they have faced, as their position one player, ana, took a break from competitive Dota 2. They have failed to find a player to replace ana. The players that they have found, did not suit their style of play very well. However now with ana back in their lineup, they may just be able to find the magic that made them TI champions once again. There’s no doubt that OG has the ability to be a world-class team, they proved so with their beautiful underdog story at TI8. This is the team to watch if you want to see a struggling team, find their identity once again.

(Also watch OG if you want to see the most amazing, high-level, Big Daddy n0tail Abaddon gameplay.)

Team Secret

Region: Europe
Closed Qualifier Result: 6W-1L

Team Secret is looking unbeatable. Since TI8, they have come in first at ESL One Hamburg, The Chongqing Major, ESL One Katowice, MDL Disneyland Paris, nearly missing out at DreamLeague Season 11, and The Kuala Lampur Major. They’ve won almost everything, and they have done so while dominating every team that steps in their way. On their way to win MDL Disneyland Paris, they utterly destroyed OG, the TI8 champions, and Liquid, two very strong teams. They managed a 6W-1L record in the closed qualifiers for EPICENTER, qualifying directly from the group stage. Backed by Puppey, also known as the best captain in the world, there really is not much one can critique this team on. Forget the EPICENTER Major, Team Secret is looking like the favourite for TI9. If you want to see some utter domination, this is the team to watch.

Sicko By Michael Moore

0

Sicko. A documentary that investigates health care in the United States by focusing on the pharmaceutical industry and it’s health insurance.
Michael Moore is famous for his works concerning globalism and capitalism. It compares the for profit/private care system to the public health care system. This 2007 documentary focused on several different countries during it’s run-time of 2 hours and 3 minutes such as Canada, Cuba, France and the United Kingdom.

After watching this documentary, it really made an impression on how different health care is around the world. According to the World Health Organization which was referenced in the film, the United States is ranked 37 out of 191. The countries that he visited compared the US were ranked higher as France was ranked at 1, United Kingdom at 18 and Canada at 30.

The idea of paying for health care at such a high price was shocking as the documentary showed a couple who had to sell their house and belongings and live with their daughter and her kids so that they could pay the fees. The cost for an ambulance, the cost for being treated, the cost for the staying overnight in the hospital and then the cost for buying the medication led them to bankruptcy. About 50 million adults in the US experience bankruptcy due to the medical costs. When Michael went to Cuba, all they asked for was the patients’ name and birthday and then started to treat them for free. The costs for the medication at the pharmacy was only a couple of cents and it was the same medication the patients’ used in the US. In Britain, all they had to pay for were the dispensing costs which roughly converted to a few US dollars. They even had a cashier that payed the patients’ money for any transport costs.

Another thing I noticed when watching this film is that many Americans went to different places to get free health care. One of the people he interviewed was a woman who frequently crossed the border and acted as if she lived in Canada. When they filmed her go to a clinic, the police were notified and she then proceeded to go to another clinic nearby.

There are positives and negatives for everything but this documentary focused more on the negatives. As I thought about this, my only question was that “Is it really free?” Yes, in the U.S there are high costs but in Canada there are long wait times, in France there are high taxes and in Britain the hospitals are cash-short. The U.S pays more to specialized doctors and it is more personal. In the end, no it is not free. There are pro and cons to everything but the documentary looked past these issues and solely focused on the good parts. I believe that the documentary could have shown viewers both sides to each countries systems as that would have really been educational and it would have worked well into the theme of how different countries operate their health care.

Techniques for Studying Smarter, not Harder

With final exam season just around the corner, many students typically try to frantically cram information from the beginning of the semester before their exam or diploma. However instead of trying to pull all-nighters and study for hours and hours at a time, there are many ways to retain the same amount of information without feeling overwhelmed. By using techniques to retain information effectively, you can learn to study smarter in less time, rather than passively studying for a long period of time.

Sometimes it can feel as if you will never get anything done and it is easy to lose motivation. This is why it’s important to remember what your goals are and what you want to achieve.

Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.

Arthur Ashe

Make sure you do not overwhelm yourself!

Start nice and slow! Instead of trying to cram a 6 hour study session in one night, the day before an exam. Start studying as early as you can. Even if it seems too late to do this, start at a slow pace. Try looking over your notes, textbook, and any other necessary study material for 15 minutes and think about how much material you need to review before your exam. Split up the material into smaller chunks to spread it out throughout the days leading up to the exam. This leads to my next tip…

Create a study schedule

With the material split up into topics, chapters, or units, spread out what you are going to review in an organized schedule. You can do this by using a calendar or you can simply write everything you need to do on a piece of paper and label what day you will look over that chapter. Make sure you make this schedule as realistic as possible! Know your limits and allow yourself to take some breaks when possible.

Dedicate more time to topics that you don’t understand

Studying for hours on end is not realistic and when this happens, it is common for you to look over material that you already understand and will likely get right on an exam anyways. Instead, grab a piece of paper and write the topic on the top of the paper. For example, “DNA” can be the topic. Then below, right jot notes on everything you know about this topic. Once you’re done, compare these notes to a textbook or your own notes from class. Make sure you write down (in a different colour) all of the key ideas you may have missed. When you study, you should focus on these areas as you are more likely to forget them again than forget the things that you already know from memory.

Study with other people!

Although I do not recommend this for everyone, it can be helpful in certain situations. I personally find that when studying with a group larger than 2-3, I easily get distracted and am unable to focus on my work. However, when doing math or chemistry practice questions, I’ve found that it was helpful to work with another person. This was particularly helpful because we were able to teach each other concepts that we didn’t understand and learn from the mistakes that we may have made. This is a great way to understand how to look at certain topics in a different perspectives and learn new ways to understand the material.

Do not rely on one method of studying

Studying solely off of your notes is not an effective method of studying as the information there may be lacking some key information or may not be 100% accurate. Instead, it is more helpful to use a variety of sources to understand the material. For example, reviewing from your notes, then comparing this information with the textbook is a simple way to retain more of the material. From there, you can find other resources such as flashcards on Quizlet or Khan Academy.

Try to stay focused on one task at a time

Multitasking is not effective because your brain uses energy to switch between multiple things. As an example, instead of devoting anywhere between 80-100% of your focus on one task, when multitasking, your brain could be dedicating 30-40% towards studying. It is much more effective to focus entirely on studying in order to get the most our of your time.

Listening to music while studying is pretty controversial; many swear by it, but it can also be considered a major distraction. Do what is best for you, but be able to realize when you are not working as efficiently as you could be.

Most importantly, take care of yourself!

In order to be able to be successful in school, you have to have a happy and healthy mind and body. Take breaks, eat well, exercise and make sure you always get enough sleep! Practicing self-care is essential for a healthy and happy mind!

Do we live in a Multiverse?

0

The multiverse is the concept that there are alternate realities in which things are ever so marginally and/or vastly different. This means past the expanse of our observable universe there exists another observable universe where things are different: welcome to the multiverse. Such possibilities are exciting, and intriguing. It allows us to imagine that somewhere there are an infinite number of versions of ourselves. Below are four main theories which explain possible theories of the universe.

1. The first proposed model is the bubble universe model. In this model, there are universes too distant to view, rendering us unaware of their existence. After all we have a very limited view of 42 billion light years in an infinite universe. Another form of this is that universes exist inside of black holes. These black holes may be wormholes to these parallel universes. Perhaps we exists in one of these bubbles and the many universe-bubbles collect to form a vast ocean.

2. The second theory is that of membranes. This one is slightly more complex. It says that our universe, or what we know as our universe, is just a three dimensional surface part of a super-universe with many more dimensions. To imagine this think of how a paper is only a single surface that when combined with others becomes a three dimensional book. Other universes are the other pages to this book and are called membranes.

3. The pocket universe theory has become very popular with recent research. We know that the big bang was a rapid expansion of the universe resulting in the series of events which led to earth. This theory proposes that perhaps there are pockets of our universe which continue to expand and inflate. This means that these alternate universes would have much different laws of physics from ours. Applying this to string theory we can explain the solutions we have as physical laws of alternate universes. Many scientists who believe in this version of the multiverse also believe in the Anthropic principle which means that any slight change to physical laws would not allow the existence of life.

4. The many worlds theory is our third and final theory, as well as my personal favourite. It sets forth the idea that every possible alternate timeline is taking place. We are unable to perceive the existence of the other timelines because we are living out just one. These universes are governed by the same physical laws. This theory interprets quantum mechanics and probability in an infinite set of manifestations, we however exist in just one branch.

Rick’s and Morty’s from the multiverse

Will we ever know? Technology is being developed to detect “bruises” caused by collisions with other universes; should there be any that is. The study of quantum physics is often exploring the realms of our universe, so the the physicists will be the first to know. As of right now however there is no experimental proof of any of the above theories. The multiverse will continue to exist in movies, books and any form which sci-fi takes.

How to Wake Up at 5 AM Everyday

Waking up early is a difficult task for many people. Generally, waking up is the most dreaded part of anyone’s day. However, it is arguably the most important part of your entire day. I personally believe that how you feel when you wake up can determine your mood throughout the day. I find that whenever I wake up tired or feeling groggy, I continue through the rest of my day in a horrible mood. I typically find that the later I wake up, the less motivated I feel that day. Waking up early makes me feel motivated and productive. I also love waking up early in the morning because it creates more time where I can do the things that I love but may not have the time to do during a busy day. I will admit, I do not wake up at 5 AM every morning. Honestly, it has been a while since I have woken up that early consistently. This is due to the fact that I have been going to bed late recently (late to my standards – I will discuss this later*). However, if you follow these tips, you will be able to get into the habit of waking up early. Like any other habit, it takes a while to get used to doing this every morning. Allow yourself to slowly develop the habit of waking up early; make slight changes every day and you will be able to build up to waking up at 5 AM (maybe even earlier!).

On early school mornings, I typically wake up early to do some extra review or even preview the material I will be learning that day in class. This allows my brain to “start working” and I can slowly get prepared for school. Sometimes I will just sit at my desk and listen to some music as I try to mentally wake myself up. I have always been somewhat of a morning person so this is usually not that difficult.

On weekends, I allow myself to sleep in a bit until anywhere around 7 to 9 AM depending on my schedule and how early/late I slept the night before. This leads to my first tip:

Regulate the amount of sleep by adjusting the bedtime, not the wake-up time.

Go to Bed Early

This may seem like a no-brainer, but it is shocking how sleeping earlier can affect your mood, ability to concentrate and performance in school or work. There have been many instances where I have gone to school without enough sleep and have scored horrible grades on tests or quizzes even though I studied. Now, I prioritize sleep over everything. Rather than cram for a test that I am not prepared for, I accept that my performance will be worse without sleep and I immediately go to bed. That being said, you may ask “well, how much sleep do I really need?” Well, it’s said that teenagers typically need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep. Numerous people have tried to convince me that they can function normally with less than 6 hours of sleep. However, many people suffer from “sleep debt” and do not realize how tired they are or what it feels like to be fully rested.

In order to break the habit of going to bed late, try going to bed 15 minutes earlier everyday. Another tip is to turn off all electronics at least an hour before you go to bed. Try reading or doing another calming activity just prior to sleeping (ex: yoga, journaling, drawing, etc…).

Before you go to bed, try to planning out your bedtime in order to make sure you get a sufficient amount of sleep. For example, if I am planning to wake up at 6 AM, I will plan to go to bed at around 9 to 10 PM. This may sound very early for some of you but *I am nowhere close to being a night owl. I get tired at around 8 PM and am unable to stay awake late. Due to this, I try to finish my homework and studying early in the evening or I will wake up early to finish my school work. I am only able to stay up with caffeine in my system or if I am looking at a screen like my laptop, phone or TV.

Have a Reason to Wake Up

Create a personal reason or goal; why do you want to wake up early? If you create a goal, you will feel more motivated to achieve that goal. Having a solid reason to wake up will make you feel obligated to wake up. For example, if you and a friend agree to meet up early in the mornings to go on a walk or to work out together, you will have someone (or something) to hold you accountable.

Creating a schedule is also a good way to make the flow of waking up early easier in the morning. For example, when I wake up, I will allow myself to spend 5 to 10 minutes on my phone, usually catching up on emails, messages, other notifications and occasionally reading the news. Then I will get up to shower and get ready. If I have time before breakfast, I will usually look over some schoolwork or read. Although my schedule is not very specific, it still makes me feel organized and I know exactly what I have to do after waking up.

An important thing to remember is: don’t overwhelm yourself! Make sure you have everything cleaned and set up the night before so that you feel less pressure in the morning.

eating breakfast is also really important!

If you are trying to wake up earlier, remember to start off with small changes to your regular schedule! Trying to wake up 2 hours earlier than normal in one day is going to be a disaster. Instead, wake up 15 minutes earlier every week or everyday and slowly you will be able to easily wake up at 5 AM. Also, never snooze your alarm! Guaranteed, you will feel even more exhausted when the alarm goes off again. Keep your alarm far away from your bed so that you are forced to get up and walk to turn it off. Fight the urge to return to bed! Put yourself in a positive mood by playing some upbeat music or by making a nutritious breakfast.

Hope this was helpful and good luck!

The videos below were what made me interested in waking up early! The Youtuber UnJaded Jade introduced me to the idea of waking up early and being productive. Her “MY 5AM MORNING ROUTINE 2017” video has honestly changed my life in the past two years.

The Art of ASMR

ASMR, or Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, is a type of sensory stimulus, and is often described as a tingling sensation that helps (or at least is supposed to) you relax! The concept of ASMR content on social media is fairly recent, and the contrasting reactions to ASMR is very evident.

Personally speaking, my initial exposure to ASMR was not pleasant, as I found the sounds very tedious and unnecessary. However, I have quickly fell in for the art of ASMR and wanted to share 5 facts that you most likely didn’t know about ASMR.

  1. Another name for ASMR is “brain massage”
https://giphy.com/gifs/animation-art-illustration-26gR0VKRgr1yIsJEY?utm_source=iframe&utm_medium=embed&utm_campaign=Embeds&utm_term=https%3A%2F%2Ftwentytwowords.com%2Fcrazy-things-about-asmr-videos%2F

Before the term “autonomous sensory meridian response” had been officially stated by a woman named Jennifer Allen, who started a Facebook page called ASMR Group, the strange sensation of ASMR had been known to be a “brain massage”. It is commonly compared to a treatment for any other part of your body, such as a tight muscle, but for your brain!

2. Although ASMR may seem like a strange Youtube content, it may have potential health benefits!

https://twentytwowords.com/crazy-things-about-asmr-videos/

It is currently only known to relieve and relax the brain, but early studies show that it actually alleviates stress, insomnia, and depression. It is becoming an encouraged way of dealing with stress, especially for college students as well as employees.

3. Different voices and sounds have different effects

https://studybreaks.com/culture/why-asmr-is-perfect-for-college-students/

With the various types of ASMR present, not every person will be triggered by all of them. Therefore, whether it is by choice or instinct, everyone is more attracted to one type of ASMR over another. This can vary on the tone of the contents creator, the type of sound or even the visual that follows the sounds. For example, some people feel more comfortable and relieved when they watch the video of, let’s say soap cutting, while hearing the sounds.

4. White Noises can also be calming

https://weedaway.com/blog/tips-for-lawn-mowing/

Although ASMR is often thought of quiet, soft sounds, there are contents of loud noises such as vacuuming, lawn mowing, drilling, etc. This can be more soothing for some, as the overlap of multiple frequencies trigger their minds to settle down.

5. Bob Ross is the (accidental) origin of ASMR

https://www.google.com/search?q=bob+ross&client=safari&rls=en&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjF78Gd1MTiAhUJt54KHYUAAi0Q_AUIDigB&biw=1199&bih=753#imgrc=YbVtHQ9xnZGfSM:

It is not known to many that Bob Ross, the host of The Joy of Painting, is the O.G. ASMR star. Although the actual concept and term of ‘ASMR’ was created after his death, his soothing voice, calm movements and harmonious brushstrokes as he painted his “happy little trees” has lured many into his videos.

The Influence of Anti-Vaccinators Has On Social Media (3)

In the last two posts of this series I talked about the influence groups of social media such as Twitter and the false information of vaccines that go around. I also contributed the second post into some data on how vaccines do really help people to avoid harmful diseases.

The image seen above of the positive affect on vaccines and how it overall helped individuals. Social media echo chambers are when certain users only see information that echo’s their own beliefs. This drives them to further participate in the anti-vaccination movement. Online users will select some key pieces of information and decide to ignore the argument for vaccinations. A study called the Moving the Needle found out that two out of five parents under the age of eighteen have false information on vaccinations in which they surveyed 2,600 parents.

In Europe, a psychologist at the University of Erfurt in Germany says that around half of the people surveyed in ten European countries were found to get medical information of social media and the internet. However the online information seen is found to have a greater impact. Dr. Betsch had said there is some phycological research that influence on perceptions and thoughts are not always conscious, having a subtle effect.

What is Herd Immunity and why does this matter?

Herd immunity is when describes how a population is protected for a disease stopping the germ that is responsible for the infection. For example, the bacteria pneumococcus can cause blood poisoning or meningitis. In many cases, it lives in people’s throat, harmless. However if they spread to someone that is vulnerable to this, such as a toddler, this can cause a disease. By being vaccinated the toddler cannot pass the infection to other people. However for herd immunity to work, a very large portion of people must be vaccinated.

In order for Herd Immunity to work, it would depend of the type of germ and how contagious the germ is. The more contagious this germ is, the more people must be vaccinated. Measles are very contagious and in order to reach herd immunity around 90%-95% of the population must be vaccinated. A disease like polio which is less contagious would need around 85% of the population to be vaccinated. Although this percentage is lower, this is still a very high amount of vaccinated people, taking into account that some cannot be vaccinated because of their immune system. However herd immunity only works with diseases that are contagious and a disease like tetanus comes directly from the soil. Because of this anyone can be exposed.

James Charles VS. Tati Westbrook

The Beauty Community is very chaotic at the moment. There’s been a scandal after scandal, and one popular scandal is the James VS. Tati feud. If you are unfamiliar, Tati Westbrook’s 48-minute video named “BYE SISTER” blew up within minutes. Tati accused James Charles of sexual harassment, behaving entitled and behaviour which was inappropriate for his younger viewers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eomvLLpgpbI
Tati deleted the original video, so here is a re-upload from another user.

James in return, uploaded an apologetic video that is 8-minutes. He didn’t say much as I didn’t watch the whole video. Most people couldn’t, even though it was much shorter than Tati’s. In the video he says that he’ll learn and grow from this. Most viewers know James as very happy and talkative, in this video he’s “crying” and taking long pauses every two words. James lost the most subscribers in YouTube history, he lost more than 1 million subscribers in a day. He went from 16M to 13M in about 2-3 days. James received lots of shade and hateful comments from “supporters” and celebrities. Jefree Star, The Dolan Twins, Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian and Emma Chamberlain, etc. had unfollowed him since Tati’s video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ws6nxMk6I0&t=435s
lol

16th May, 2019: Tati Westbrook uploads an 18-minute video named “Why I Did It…” She explains why she decided to speak up about the situation. James uploads a video three days later named “No More Lies”.

In this video, James clears the air and responds to Tati’s absurd accusations. He says that he reached out to Tati’s competitor, Sugar Bear Hair, for an “Artists Pass” at Coachella. He also says that after the incident he tried to apologize to Tati and her husband but got no response. Eleven minutes into the video, and you can hear James lashing out at Tati for talking about his mother. He went on today that’s she’s a cancer survivor, balances her her marriage, a full-time job and two boys who have crazy lives.

Finally, James denies all allegations of sexual harassment. He said that he’d never and that he will never use his fame, money or power to manipulate a guy. He goes on to deny all allegations for the rest of the video. James has re-gained 2M subscribers. Tati’s subscribers have skyrocketed since the incident and seemed to remain the same. Tati has deleted videos regarding James.

Do Not Say We Have Nothing by Madeleine Thien

0

I recently finished reading this book while I was sick. Amongst a pile of tissues and wrapped in a blanket, I found that the book was beautiful, and I regret that I could not appreciate it in more dignified manner… oh well.

Frankly, I have no idea how to describe the complex yet wonderfully captivating story without utterly failing to capture its meaningful details and risk misconstruing Thien’s novel. But it would be an even greater shame to leave the description to shallow comments like “compelling” or “riveting” or “engrossing” or “sophisticated” or “intimate” and so on, so here goes a summary of the story, since any analysis.

A picture of Mao Zedong at Tiananmen Square

The novel begins through the perspective of Li-Ling, also called Marie and Ma-Li, the daughter of a widowed mother. Kai, her father, is a renowned pianist in China abandoned her after seeking his distant friend Sparrow living in Beijing at the height of the 1989 Tianamen Square Protests. In order to avoid spoiling these intense moments of the story, I will skip straight away to Sparrow’s identity.

While Sparrow, his cousin Zhuli, and Kai were all close friends who lived during Mao’s reign, these talented musicians suffered in various ways to play, compose, and critique certain music, while other forms were considered a taboo.

Sparrow’s daughter, Ai-Ming, an active protester and ambitious student moves in with Li-Ling and their mother. Where through memory, Ai-Ming retells the story of many other characters transformed by various political events.

These characters include: her grandmother, named “Big Mother Knife”, her grandfather an acclaimed war veteran named “Ba Lute”. Their two sons, and the younger brothers of Sparrow, “Big Mountain”, and “Flying Bear”. The sister of “Big Mother Knife” named “Swirl”, and her husband “Wen the Dreamer”, whose daughter is Zhuli.

While my poor explanatory skills fail to capture the story’s tender relationships strengthened through extraordinary political events, the realistic faith and emotions maintained through hardship, and the persevering quality of music and morality. I would undoubtedly recommend this novel, especially to readers who are unaware, but seek knowledge regarding the 1989 Tianamen Square protests or Chinese history in the 20th century. This novel has deeply impacted me, and I would like to finish with one of the most notable quotes in the book:

“He’d been thinking about the quality of sunshine, that is, how daylight wipes away the stars and the planets, making them invisible to human eyes. If one needed the darkness in order to see the heavens, might daylight be a form of blindness? Could it be that sound was also a form of deafness? If so, what was silence?”

Although, while I was researching the Tiananmen square, what frightened me most was the remaining injustice, censorship, and silencing of the events of the 1989 Tiananmen Square Protests.

According to The Guardian, “Chinese authorities have detained dozens of people as part of a ramped-up annual crackdown ahead of the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre”. The massacre ranged from hundreds to several thousand of deaths, a statistic which the government has purposely “hushed”. Furthermore, according to CNN, the Chinese government states that the 1989 protests were not “suppressed”

“This year’s pre-June 4th crackdown continues a 30-year long campaign by the Chinese government to try to erase the memory and rewrite the history of the bloody military suppression of peaceful unarmed protesters and residents of Beijing and other cities on June 3-4, 1989,” said the Chinese Human Rights Defenders.”

“Tank Man”, one of the most iconic photos in history

The effects of China’s censorship are ever more prevalent by interviewing Chinese students studying at Peking university, a key center for the Square incident, who could not recognize the famous “tank man” image, let alone know about the Tiananmen Square Protests which happened in Beijing.

However, during the interview, one of the students whispered to the student next to him “89”, revealing that the students could be deliberately hiding their knowledge of the protests, in order to avoid potential persecution.

I would like to finish by saying I had never intended to research Chinese history to this extent, and most notably the 1989 Massacre, whose anniversary is appearing this June 4th. However, Thien’s powerful novel has wielded me with serious knowledge and wisdom of the past, to cherish my freedom. I fully regret I can not express the beauty of her book succinctly within my writing, but I urge you to read this novel which can be previewed here. For I now clearly understand the meaning of the title: Do Not Say We Have Nothing.

Tempo Storm Didn’t Win NPL Royale! Finally…. Some Diversity

Envy won NPL Royale! Not Tempo Storm!

This is great news for the National PUBG League. Tempo Storm has been dominating the NPL, coming in first in the preseason, NPL Royale 1, and Phase 1 of the NPL season. In fact, they’re still 1st place on the leaderboard in Phase 2 of the NPL season. If you watch the NPL, you know the feeling. Tempo Storm rolls in and smites everyone in their surroundings, seemingly winning whenever they feel like it. It’s almost like they have a magical power to find winning situations, whether it’s hiding in compounds, waiting for the right time to strike like a vulture, or just rolling over squads by overwhelming them with skill. However, one situation they weren’t able to win, is NPL Royale 2. At NPL Royale 2, Tempo Storm didn’t win anything convincingly to show viewers why they are the #1 team in North America. They were in the middle of the pack of those who qualified for the finals, being 5th out of 8 who qualified in their group. In the finals, they finished near the bottom of the pack, at 12th place out of 16.

This is an extremely disappointing finish for them. However, they did show flashes of greatness. In game one, they rolled over Yellow Pike Gaming, despite the fact that they were holding in a strong compound. They came in second this game, losing a 3v4 against Simplicity, a situation they should have come out on top on. Simplicity had no cover, just a few trees and a rock. On the other hand, Tempo Strom had hills, a whole ridge-line to use as cover. Tempo Storm had plenty of meds and weapons, whereas Simplicity was a bit short on these resources as they held a single compound for the whole game. Despite the man disadvantage, Tempo Storm had the terrain and resource advantage over Simplicity, this is a situation where they should have come out on top. But they did not. After this game, they didn’t find much success either.

This is not normal for Tempo Storm. it’s normal for them to roll over other teams, even when the odds are against them. They’ve fallen hard at NPL Royale 2, which might open the field up for other teams in the future. Tempo Storm has been dominating for so long, viewers have already started to grow tired of seeing the same faces on top. As humans, we have a tendency to cheer for underdogs. So many viewers will be happy to see diversity in the winners role.

A Very Late Game of Thrones Rant

I know that Game of Thrones ended a couple weeks ago, but I’m still mad about how it ended.

There are gonna be loads of spoilers about the 8th season in here so be warned. I also haven’t read the books, so this is solely about the end of the TV show.

So first off, the biggest thing I’m mad about, is the fact that they completely threw Jaime’s character arc out the window. I was honestly rooting for him, since he left his sister and was living his best life with the newly knighted Brienne of Tarth and I was really happy for him. And then he went straight back to King’s landing as soon as he heard that his sister might die. We all knew it was coming, and I was honestly hoping that he’d be the one to kill her. But nope, they died together, and Cersei got a way better death than she deserved.

I also think that they ruined Daenerys. She became her father, she was a tyrant. I loved her in the first few seasons, she was a strong woman who wanted to do her own thing and she was absolutely amazing. Then she killed a lot of people, and that was bad but I was sure she was gonna redeem herself. But the eighth season came around and she burned a whole city. I hate to say it but by the end I wanted her to die. She was too far gone.

I miss Theon but I’m not sad he died, not everyone could’ve stayed alive.

I don’t know how I feel about Jon going back to the night’s watch. I feel like he isn’t protecting anything anymore? The White Walkers are all dead, everyone’s friends with the Wildings, I really think it was pointless. But hey, he had a cute reunion with Ghost so that was nice.

I’m actually really happy that Sansa became queen of Winterfell. It’s about time they became independent and I think she deserved it, she’s gone through a hell of a lot and she’s gonna be a fantastic queen.

I was a little shocked by the whole Arya and Gendry thing but honestly it was cute and I think they both deserve to be happy, even if they didn’t end up together.

The thing they did with the book at the end was SUPER cliché and I kinda hated it.

Though I know he’s a good choice, seeing as how he knows exactly what happened at every point in history, I didn’t like that Bran became king of the 6 kingdoms. He seemed like a bit of a boring character in my opinion and there were definitely better choices.

I’m glad Tyrion is still alive and that’s all I’ve got.

Thank you for reading an incredibly unstructured rant.

Woe To Those Who Pray In The Streets

Flaunting supposed moral superiority is an ancient phenomenon. The scriptures speak of Christ’s criticism of the Pharisees who would routinely pray in the streets to show their virtue to the public.

Source: https://wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/1102016092

The act of praying in the street is strikingly similar to the act of posting a post supporting a righteous cause and acting in NO way whatsoever. This type of behaviour ultimately results in moral destruction. Social media has resulted in an explosion of virtue signalling in our world. The ability for messages to spread quickly without check nor balance is extremely dangerous. It has created an echo chamber of false virtue that envelopes the developing mind and perverts the integrity of our society. The expansion of social media has resulted in a new generation of digital Pharisees and false prophets praying in the streets. This false prophecy and social pandering is epitomized by posts such as:

Source: https://isdb.pw/francescacapaldi

An observation of statistics concerning general progress on some of the most prominent issues in our society (climate change, mental health, war, etc.) allows you to draw a very simple conclusion:

There is a disconnect between the amount of people appearing to care about issues through social media expression, and the amount of people ACTUALLY taking action.

This means there is another motivation for issue focused social media posts other than genuinely caring about the issue. I have identified why people are demonstrating hollow care. The reason is simple… To portray moral superiority.

Moral Superiority:

The majority of people posting these very high minded posts are not actually inciting any real change. This is backed by statistics on change vs awareness as mentioned above. I have always viewed awareness as one of the lower means of creating change. In my humble opinion social media awareness is one of the least efficient means of enacting change. Those who make these posts are largely focused on the moral perception of themselves as being a prometheus that recognizes this issue within their peer group. This is evidenced by looking at what gets reposted. Many of the messages that get reposted are oversimplified. They would be considered stupid to any reputable intellectual. Anyone legitimately concerned about solving said issue would not post these things as they are not representing the issue accurately. The posts are simple because it doesn’t MATTER if the message is stupid or oversimplified because the one posting the message has no intention to cause any change but rather to increase their social value, feel good, and exert moral superiority. Similarly, it doesn’t matter if your prayer will be well received by God if you were not praying to God in the first place but rather making a demonstration to your peers of your virtue and concealing your wickedness. To refer back to the example of Christ. We know that Christ was not one to pray in public. He was one to wash the feet of his disciples and heal the sick. He was one to focus his relationship with God inward. His actions show that the best way to develop true virtue is by acts of value and meaning not by publicly stunting to show virtue. Today’s people should follow a similar model. They should recognize that righteousness is not a means to social approval but a means in itself. It has intrinsic meaning.

Showing ones support for a movement and spreading ideas has become likened to actually solving issues and has been given a false moral pretense which many exploit. If this is to continue we will flounder on actually solving the problems in our society. Because, in our modern age those who pray in the streets are bound to get run over sooner or later.

The Cool Kazoo

When thinking of simple instruments, what comes to mind? Maybe you’re thinking of a little toy drum or one of those small, rainbow xylophones. Or maybe a kazoo crosses your mind. A kazoo is a sort of wind instrument that the player hums into instead of blowing air. It is wider at one end and tapered at the other end. There are no buttons or valves. A membrane inside the kazoo vibrates when the player hums, which creates the buzzing sound.

An instrument similar to the kazoo was used in Africa for many years before the creation of the modern kazoo. The history of today’s instrument, however, is not certain. It is said that the kazoo was invented by Alabama Vest in 1840, with the prototype made by clockmaker Thaddeus Von Clegg. They demonstrated the instrument with the name “Down South Submarine” at the Georgia State Fair in 1852. Emil Sorg saw the kazoo at the fair and worked on the large-scale production of the instrument with Michael McIntyre, released in the early 1900s. However, there is no documentation of any of this to verify the beginnings of the kazoo. In 1902, the classic kazoo was patented by George D. Smith.

Kazoos can be made of metal, wood, glass, or plastic. Today, kazoos are most often made of plastic. More expensive kazoos are made of metal, usually stainless steel. Kazoos have also been made with silver and gold. Being made of different materials, there may be a difference in the harmonics of plastic and metal kazoos, although it could be hard to distinguish these differences with the naked ear. It is also possible to make your own kazoo using materials found around the house.

As with other instruments, whimsical or not, people take the time to make all sorts of music with the kazoo. Enjoy listening to these different musical pieces and arrangements featuring the kazoo.
