As summer draws to a close, the cold air starts creeping and the leaves begin to fall. Autumn is here! For many that means pumpkin pie near a warm fireplace drinking orange pekoe tea whilst enjoying a favourite book. That’s just one type of person. For more of us who have to stay in the loop, Autumn signifies not only the start of a new school year, but also the start of new quarter of films that Hollywood has churned up. Summer 2013 hasn’t been a great season for films, but Autumn seems to be more promising. Here’s my top six upcoming films of Autumn 2013.

THE FAMILY

This movie has been widely anticipated film featuring big name droppers such as Robert De Niro, Tommy Lee Jones, and Michelle Pfeiffer. INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2

If you thought the ending to Insidious was incomplete, you’ll be glad to hear there will be a sequel to the stoic horror film by James Wan. It continues five days after the first film and revolves around the possession of the father to the back story to why they can travel out of body. It’s promised to be much creepier and stranger than the first one, queue the scary Spongebob music.

DON JON

Don Jon is simply described as a story of the delusions of love. This film has gained traction in the film world because this is the first major film directed by the actor, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It features Scarlett Johansson, a girl who believes romantic films to be reality of what love should be like, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a gym junkie who also holds an idea of what love should be like. This film has received critical acclaim premièring in the Toronto International Film Festival and has been described as a “clever and smart romantic comedy.” It is a great start for this rising actor’s first major directorial work.

GRAVITY

Imagine, drowning in the ocean, continuously falling without anything to save you. May not seem like much, but it’s a scary nightmare for most. Now imagine being put in the same situation, but in space. A world where there is no gravity to save you or control to what direction you could go. Gravity explores the survival of man and the desolate hopelessness of loneliness. This film features big name droppers such as Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.

12 YEARS A SLAVE

This film received great media buzz throughout the TIFF 2013 sphere. 12 Years A Slave is a true story about Solomon Northup, a free black man during the mid 1800’s who was a gifted and famous fiddler. All was going well for Solomon. He had a wife and a loving family, a good income, and most of all, he was a free man. Something back then wasn’t common for most black people during the time. Then suddenly, he is kidnapped and sold into slavery in a Louisiana plantation under the rule of a cruel master. This film promises to be a heartfelt film that tugs the heart strings.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD

For those geeks out there who just can’t get enough of the Marvel universe or for those who are dying to know the mystery that surrounds The Avengers. Meet your sequel, well kind of a sequel. It picks up the days after the ending of The Avengers as Thor tries to battle the alien beings that invaded Earth. And with every Marvel film that comes out now a days, expect great graphics and fancy costumes. Thor battles an alien race called the Malekith, a vicious race that seeks to darken the universe. Watch as Thor uses his signature hammer to lighten up the darkness. Get it, lightning, darkness. Okay fine… I thought it was funny.

HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE

The widely anticipated cult film has finally came. For those Hunger Games fanatics who are “hungry” for the sequel to the first novel to come out, then the wait is almost coming to a close. In the second chapter of the Hunger Games series, we continue our journey with Katniss as they tour Panem on their victory tour with Peeta. With President Snow fearing over the growing rebellious spirit within the citizens, he introduces the Quarter Quell. For those who thought that the Games themselves were gruesome, the Quarter Quell makes the other games seem like child’s play. It’s promised to be more suspenseful and gruesome than the first.
