Junior Achievement is an enriching world-wide program for students from Grades 9-12, from October to March, where students learn important business and life skills such as how to start a business, make a shareholder’s report, work together as a team to produce, market and sell a product/service, divide out wages equally and keep a company’s spirit going.

Who: Junior Achievement of Southern Alberta

What: Sign up, meet in a specific location once a week to create a product/service, choose a logo, elect vice-presidents (i.e. of Marketing, Production or Environment)and an overall president, choose a department to work under (i.e. Human Resources or Information Technology), get help from professional volunteer consultants/ mentors (i.e. an accountant) to design, organize and operate the new business, attend free special business events around Calgary (if you so choose to) and at the end of the season, there are tons of awards and scholarships to be won.

When: From October to March (meet once a week on the day of your choice-from Monday to Thursday)

Where: A location of your choice (from all over Calgary)

Why: To learn the ins and outs (risks and rewards) of starting a new business by building it with your own hands from Day 1, build positive relationships between youth and the Calgary business community, learn how to overcome business challenges for the best outcome (because for sure, there’ll be a few), and to understand the importance of team-building and ethics in smoothly running a business
