Meet Fatima Mir Baloch!

Fatima Mir Baloch is a grade 12 student at Western Canada High School.  Since joining Youth Are Awesome this year, Fatima has written captivating posts. I am pleased to introduce her as our newest blogger of the month! Last week, I was able to sit down to have a quick chat with her and get to know her better.

Fatima’s posts are always very well-written and detailed. My personal favorite “Billie Eilish’s New Video Proves She Is A Force To Be Reckoned With” also proves that just like Billie Eilish, one of our newest bloggers, Fatima, establishes she is also a force to be reckoned with. When asked about what inspires her to write, Fatima had this to say :

“I remember I was in fourth grade and that was the first time I read “The Adventures of Tintin”. He’s like this reporter who travels around the world with his dog and solves crimes and mysteries and [I thought] “I wanna be a journalist”. By that time I was already into writing. I’ve had a journal since like grade four. Journalism seemed like the best career out for me and that’s kinda what pushed me to constantly be writing.”

Fatima has also written about social issues. In her post “Destigmatizing Failure In Canadian Schools”, Fatima explores the effects of our school systems when teenagers experience the inevitability of failure. This proving that Fatima can effectively write about different topics. With her remarkable versatility I was curious to know why Fatima chose to join Youth Are Awesome.

” Just to gain an experience of what it’s like to have a deadline and be ready to come up with a good idea to write about. [Also to] kinda immerse [myself] into the world of journalism as soon as possible. Plus I knew some people in Youth Are Awesome and in Youth Central.”

When reading Fatima’s posts, it’s obvious to any reader that she puts a solid amount of effort into each one of them. She writes with passion and it’s evident in everything she’s written. Because of this, I had to ask her what writing means to her.

“Well I’m personally more into writing about current events or people in history. I just feel like what’s better than true stories of people who faced the worst kind of adversity and still made it. I just know that I want to be telling stories – could be through music or writing.”

In her newest post “Freddie Mercury: An Icon With An Intricate Identity”, Fatima tells the story of Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the band Queen. Finally, being in her last year of high school, I asked Fatima what her plans were for the upcoming year.

“I plan to go into university – I would like to major in Political Science. I’m [also] interested in International Affairs. I feel like that would help me specialize in journalism in a way.”

Fatima’s posts are definitely worth the read. Her writing captivates readers and we are pleased to name her as this year’s first blogger of the month!
