Italy Trip

I just got back from a trip to Italy which was absolutely amazing! And if you’ve been to Italy you know what I mean! My four favourite things about the vacation were the original statue of David, the original Last Supper painting, the ruin city of Pompeii and the medieval city of San Gimignano.

Michelangelo’s David was incredible! It’s hard to believe that someone can carve a statue so realistic down to the smallest detail. The plan when he was going to carve this statue was to create the “perfect man”  and so in order to avoid imperfection Michelangelo studied human anatomy by dissecting human bodies even though it was against the church. It was incredible to see in person because you could admire all the details he put into it. The left hand of the statue is up while the right is down, and because he understood anatomy the veins of the right hand were more budged than the ones of the left. As amazing how exact everything was, it was also such a beautiful piece of art and the copies don’t do it any justice at all.

The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci actually left me breathless!! He created exact to what the scriptures said, and even foreshadowed in the painting it was beautiful!!! I suggest though if you do plan on seeing The Last Supper GO WITH A GUIDE unless you have studied it, because a guide helps you to understand so much more all the work put into the painting and the reasons why each person is placed a certain way. At first I thought it was going to be so boring but honestly one of the best experiences of my life.

Pompeii was spectacular!! A 2000 year old city of ruin, but there is so much there, you can see the marks in the road from the carriages, you can see a 2000 year old oven, an original pipe, the red light district, and it’s absolutely beautiful there! Pompeii was buried by the ashes of when Mount Vesuvius erupted and all of the people died from the toxic gases. The incredible thing is though that they put a mould over a couple people who died and one dog and so you can see how when they died most of them were trying to cover their mouths from the gases. It’s a stunning place and it is definitely a must see if you are interested in seeing ruins.

When I waked into San Gimignano it was like I had gone back in time, even though it is mostly shops the old buildings are awesome, and there are still 14 original tower houses left! I climbed The Great Tower there which is just the biggest one there, and the view was indescribable!!!! The drive from Florence was 50 minutes and you could see Florence from the top of that tower and the countryside of Tuscany, it was so spectacular!! There is definitely nothing like that in Canada! Also in this city there is the world’s best gelato place since 2006, which I can definitely agree that the gelato is amazing! And they have some very interesting flavours there is even a saffron flavoured one!

Overall the trip was definitely worth it and if you ever travel to Italy these 4 things have a five star rating from me and are must sees!!!
