Henry Wise Wood – The BEST High School in Calgary

You may hear sometimes that Western Canada or Sir Winston Churchill hold ownership to the title of “Best High School in Calgary.” Every so often, a school like Dr. E.P. Scarlett even makes a claim to the throne. However, the fact of the matter is that none of these schools hold a candle to the clear superiority of Henry Wise Wood. What do we have to offer, you ask? Well… everything!

  • Looking for an aura of intrigue? Look no further than the notorious tunnels of Wise Wood! Built as a safety measure against possible wars as well as for maintenance, the tunnels connect the school to various landmarks throughout the city. The tunnels also house an abandoned swimming pool; one that is allegedly guarded by the ghost of a drowned student. The tunnels are now restricted to students, but if you’re good, you may get to be one of a select few to explore them.
Warriors!
  • Do you anticipate high school to be a fun time with friends and peers? If so, you will be happy to know that Wise Wood is proven to have exceeded the legal limit for school spirit. Our pep rallies are always a blast, there are almost always intramurals going on, and of course, our assemblies are accompanied by the ferocious and dance-happy warrior: Maximus!
  • One of the greatest aspects about Wise Wood is that it truly is for everybody. As the “Home of the Scholars, Artists, and Champions,” we take pride in the fact that no one is left out at Wise Wood. We have a variety of clubs for all sorts of different interests, and unlike certain schools that shan’t be named… *Cough* Western *Cough* all of our clubs welcome members with open arms; no silly application/selection process is involved! 😀
  • Have a flair for the arts? Maybe you’re an athletic type? Not to worry! Wise Wood has an excellent Fine Arts program – one that is taking a trip to this place you may have heard of: New York City. We also offer a Professional Development in the Fine Arts program that many of our amazingly talented art, band and theatre students take advantage of. If you want to be a Warrior on the field, you can join the city champions on our rugby team, race the lanes with the swim team, smash some birdies with the Division II leading badminton team, or test your endurance with the track and cross country teams.
  • Last, but certainly not least, Wise Wood is for the world! Between the International Baccalaureate programme, International Certificate, International Exchange program, and Agents 4 the World campaign, Wise Wood is certainly doing its part to contribute to the international community. Graduates from Wise Wood of the elite IB program have gone on to world renowned universities like McGill, Stanford, and even Oxford! This past year, we welcomed 20 Japanese students as part of the International Exchange program before sending 20 of our own to Japan to experience the culture. The Agents 4 Africa campaign raised over $5,000 for the Stephen Lewis Foundation to combat HIV/AIDS in Africa, and is now transitioning to assist even more parts of the world.

Of course, everyone knows that all great schools have great teachers and students. But Henry Wise Wood is not great. It’s more than that. Because Wise Wood is the best, we also house the greatest people in our school, be it our talented students, brilliant teachers, or the amazing admin team – Wise Wood is home to the best Calgary has to offer.

  1. Great! Can’t wait to apply to IB for Henry in a matter of time! I will say that personally, the part that literally made be jump around my bedroom was:
…universities like McGill, STANFORD and even Oxford!
I will say, I personally like Stanford better than Oxford, and I will say that both have around-equal reputations. Getting into Stanford is actually more of a feat than going to Oxford. An acceptance rate of around 20% at Oxford, related to passing an exam, vs what is now the lowest acceptance rate in the world at Stanford: just over 5%! Getting into Stanford is much harder, more of a feat and, in my opinion, more rewarding, than Oxford.
    Why was I happy?
Stanford! My dream school! Students at Wise DO end up there!
As for the rant, sorry. It must just be because it’s my dream school.
    Again, sorry.
But this article did make my day!
I also like how Wise has SUCH A HUGE number of extracurricular activities. Not including things like student councils and athletics, 27 CLUBS! That is a LOT for students to get involved in!
I also learned some new information from this article.
The Ghost Of The Drowned Student?
This is awesome! The only reason I would go to Scarlett would be AP, but I believe I like IB Diploma more. The only reason I would go to WCHS – either of them – would be their name and the fact that offer certain IB courses I would like to take not offered at Wise.
But, hey! These courses might become available at Wise!
As I’m likely going to go to Henry Wise Wood, I know that they are going to be some awesome three years!
    Thanks for the article!
